In [ESAIM: M2AN, 54(2020), 2229-2264], we proposed an HDG method to approximate the solution of a tangential boundary control problem for the Stokes equations and obtained an optimal convergence rate for the optimal control {that reflects its global regularity}. However, the error estimates depend on the pressure, and the velocity is not divergence free. The importance of pressure-robust numerical methods for fluids was addressed by John et al. [SIAM Review, 59(2017), 492-544]. In this work, we devise a new HDG method to approximate the solution of the Stokes tangential boundary control problem; the HDG method is also of independent interest for solving the Stokes equations. This scheme yields a $\mathbf{H}(\mathrm{div})$ conforming, globally divergence free, and pressure-robust solution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such a numerical scheme has been obtained for an optimal boundary control problem for the Stokes equations. We also provide numerical experiments to show the performance of the new HDG method and the advantage over the non pressure-robust scheme.
We propose a multigrid method to solve the linear system of equations arising from a hybrid discontinuous Galerkin (in particular, a single face hybridizable, a hybrid Raviart--Thomas, or a hybrid Brezzi--Douglas--Marini) discretization of a Stokes problem. Our analysis is centered around the augmented Lagrangian approach and we prove uniform convergence in this setting. Numerical experiments underline our analytical findings.
This paper proposes an interface/boundary-unfitted eXtended hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (X-HDG) method for Darcy-Stokes-Brinkman interface problems in two and three dimensions. The method uses piecewise linear polynomials for the velocity approximation and piecewise constants for both the velocity gradient and pressure approximations in the interior of elements inside the subdomains separated by the interface, uses piecewise constants for the numerical traces of velocity on the inter-element boundaries inside the subdomains, and uses piecewise constants or linear polynomials for the nu…
This paper analyzes a class of globally divergence-free (and therefore pressure-robust) hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) finite element methods for stationary Navier-Stokes equations. The methods use the $\mathcal{P}_{k}/\mathcal{P}_{k-1}$ $(k\geq1)$ discontinuous finite element combination for the velocity and pressure approximations in the interior of elements, and piecewise $\mathcal{P}_k/\mathcal{P}_{k}$ for the trace approximations of the velocity and pressure on the inter-element boundaries. It is shown that the uniqueness condition for the discrete solution is guaranteed by tha…
We present the lowest-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin schemes with numerical integration (quadrature), denoted as HDG-P0, for the reaction-diffusion equation and the generalized Stokes equations on conforming simplicial meshes in two- and three-dimensions. Here by lowest order, we mean that the (hybrid) finite element space for the global HDG facet degrees of freedom (DOFs) is the space of piecewise constants on the mesh skeleton. A discontinuous piecewise linear space is used for the approximation of the local primal unknowns. We give the optimal a priori error analysis of the propo…
We propose a uniform block-diagonal preconditioner for condensed $H$(div)-conforming HDG schemes for parameter-dependent saddle point problems, including the generalized Stokes equations and the linear elasticity equations. An optimal preconditioner is obtained for the stiffness matrix on the global velocity/displacement space via the auxiliary space preconditioning (ASP) technique \cite{Xu96}. A spectrally equivalent approximation to the Schur complement on the element-wise constant pressure space is also constructed, and an explicit computable exact inverse is obtained via the Woodbury matri…
This work proposes a superconvergent hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for the approximation of the Cauchy formulation of the Stokes equation using same degree of polynomials for the primal and mixed variables. The novel formulation relies on the well-known Voigt notation to strongly enforce the symmetry of the stress tensor. The proposed strategy introduces several advantages with respect to the existing HDG formulations. First, it remedies the suboptimal behavior experienced by the classical HDG method for formulations involving the symmetric part of the gradient of the primal…
In this study, we present an $hp$-multigrid preconditioner for a divergence-conforming HDG scheme for the generalized Stokes and the Navier-Stokes equations using an augmented Lagrangian formulation. Our method relies on conforming simplicial meshes in two- and three-dimensions. The $hp$-multigrid algorithm is a multiplicative auxiliary space preconditioner that employs the lowest-order space as the auxiliary space, and we developed a geometric multigrid method as the auxiliary space solver. For the generalized Stokes problem, the crucial ingredient of the geometric multigrid method is the equ…
We construct a divergence-free HDG scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes phase field model. The scheme is robust in the convection-dominated regime, produce a globally divergence-free velocity approximation, and can be efficiently implemented via static condensation. Two numerical benchmark problems, namely the rising bubble problem, and the Rayleigh-Taylor instability problem are used to show the good performance of the proposed scheme.
Robust discretization methods for (nearly-incompressible) linear elasticity are free of volume-locking and gradient-robust. While volume-locking is a well-known problem that can be dealt with in many different discretization approaches, the concept of gradient-robustness for linear elasticity is new. We discuss both aspects and propose novel Hybrid Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods for linear elasticity. The starting point for these methods is a divergence-conforming discretization. As a consequence of its well-behaved Stokes limit the method is gradient-robust and free of volume-locking. T…
We present a novel (high-order) hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) scheme for the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem. The (moving domain) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are discretized using a divergence-free HDG scheme within the arbitrary Lagrangian-Euler (ALE) framework. The nonlinear elasticity equations are discretized using a novel HDG scheme with an H(curl)-conforming velocity/displacement approximation. We further use a combination of the Nitsche's method (for the tangential component) and the mortar method (for the normal component) to enforce the interface condi…
In this paper we present new stability and optimal error analyses of hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods which do not require elliptic regularity assumptions. To obtain error estimates without elliptic regularity assumptions, we use new inf-sup conditions based on stabilized saddle point structures of HDG methods. We show that this approach can be applied to obtain optimal error estimates of HDG methods for the Poisson equations, the convection-reaction-diffusion equations, the Stokes equations, and the Oseen equations.

A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) formulation of the linearized incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, known as Oseen equations, is presented. The Cauchy stress formulation is considered and the symmetry of the stress tensor and the mixed variable, namely the scaled strain-rate tensor, is enforced pointwise via Voigt notation. Using equal-order polynomial approximations of degree k for all variables, HDG provides a stable discretization. Moreover, owing to Voigt notation, optimal convergence of order k+1 is obtained for velocity, pressure and strain-rate tensor and a local postproce…

The paper considers a system of equations that models a lateral flow of a Boussinesq--Scriven fluid on a passively evolving surface embedded in $\mathbb{R}^3$. For the resulting Navier-Stokes type system, posed on a smooth closed time-dependent surface, we introduce a weak formulation in terms of functional spaces on a space-time manifold defined by the surface evolution. The weak formulation is shown to be well-posed for any finite final time and without smallness conditions on data. We further extend an unfitted finite element method, known as TraceFEM, to compute solutions to the fluid syst…

In recent literature several derivations of incompressible Navier-Stokes type equations that model the dynamics of an evolving fluidic surface have been presented. These derivations differ in the physical principles used in the modeling approach and in the coordinate systems in which the resulting equations are represented. This paper has overview character in the sense that we put five different derivations of surface Navier-Stokes equations into one framework. This then allows a systematic comparison of the resulting surface Navier-Stokes equations and shows that some, but not all, of the re…
In this paper we present a finite element analysis for a Dirichlet boundary control problem governed by the Stokes equation. The Dirichlet control is considered in a convex closed subset of the energy space $\mathbf{H}^1(Ω).$ Most of the previous works on the Stokes Dirichlet boundary control problem deals with either tangential control or the case where the flux of the control is zero. This choice of the control is very particular and their choice of the formulation leads to the control with limited regularity. To overcome this difficulty, we introduce the Stokes problem with outflow conditio…
In this paper a class of higher order finite element methods for the discretization of surface Stokes equations is studied. These methods are based on an unfitted finite element approach in which standard Taylor-Hood spaces on an underlying bulk mesh are used. For treating the constraint that the velocity must be tangential to the surface a penalty method is applied. Higher order geometry approximation is obtained by using a parametric trace finite element technique, known from the literature on trace finite element methods for scalar surface partial differential equations. Based on theoretica…
In this note we introduce a mixed dimensional Stokes-Darcy coupling where a $d$ dimensional Stokes' flow is coupled to a Darcy model on the $d-1$ dimensional boundary of the domain. The porous layer introduces tangential creeping flow along the boundary and allows for the modelling of boundary flow due to surface roughness. This leads to a new model of flow in fracture networks with reservoirs in an impenetrable bulk matrix. Exploiting this modelling capability, we then formulate a fluid-structure interaction method with contact, where the porous layer allows for mechanically consistent contac…
In this paper we propose a novel staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Brinkman problem on general quadrilateral and polygonal meshes. The proposed method is robust in the Stokes and Darcy limits, in addition, hanging nodes can be automatically incorporated in the construction of the method, which are desirable features in practical applications. There are three unknowns involved in our formulation, namely velocity gradient, velocity and pressure. Unlike the original staggered DG formulation proposed for the Stokes equations in \cite{KimChung13}, we relax the tangential continuity of…
A new projection method based on radial basis functions (RBFs) is presented for discretizing the incompressible unsteady Stokes equations in irregular geometries. The novelty of the method comes from the application of a new technique for computing the Leray-Helmholtz projection of a vector field using generalized interpolation with divergence-free and curl-free RBFs. Unlike traditional projection methods, this new method enables matching both tangential and normal components of divergence-free vector fields on the domain boundary. This allows incompressibility of the velocity field to be enfo…
The Stokes equation posed on surfaces is important in some physical models, but its numerical solution poses several challenges not encountered in the corresponding Euclidean setting. These include the fact that the velocity vector should be tangent to the given surface and the possible presence of degenerate modes (Killing fields) in the solution. We analyze a surface finite element method which provides solutions to these challenges. We consider an interior penalty method based on the well-known Brezzi-Douglas-Marini $H({\rm div})$-conforming finite element space. The resulting spaces are ta…
We present a numerical method for two-phase incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with jump discontinuity in the normal component of the stress tensor and in the material properties. Although the proposed method is only first-order accurate, it does capture discontinuity sharply, not neglecting nor omitting any component of the jump condition. Discontinuities in velocity gradient and pressure are expressed using a linear combination of singular force and tangential derivatives of velocities to handle jump conditions in a fully implicit manner. The linear system for the divergence of the stress…
