We propose and analyze a projection-based model reduction method for the rapid and reliable solution of time-harmonic acoustic wave propagation problems over a frequency band, with particular emphasis on seismic applications. The high-fidelity model is based on a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization, formulated as a generalized saddle-point system coupling the volume and trace unknowns. The basis construction combines residual-based greedy sampling of the frequency parameter, enrichment with frequency derivatives of the HDG solution, and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) compression. We establish the well posedness of both the high-fidelity and reduced problems and characterize their stability with inf-sup constants. We investigate the interaction between static condensation, inherent to the HDG discretization, and projection onto the reduced spaces, characterizing its implications for the reduced formulation and approximation errors. Since these operations do not commute in general, we derive a priori error estimates for both the trace and volume variables to quantify the gap between the two operations. We further identify a lifting condition on the volume reduced space that eliminates these gaps and yields a trace error estimate independent of the volume approximation error. Numerical experiments on the two-dimensional Marmousi model and a three-dimensional heterogeneous medium, with more than $10^{7}$ unknowns, illustrate the theoretical estimates and show that the reduced model achieves speedups of several orders of magnitude compared to the high-fidelity solver.
The balancing domain decomposition methods (BDDC) are originally introduced for symmetric positive definite systems and have been extended to the nonsymmetric positive definite system from the linear finite element discretization of advection-diffusion equations. In this paper, the convergence of the GMRES method is analyzed for the BDDC preconditioned linear system from advection-diffusion equations with the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization. Compared to the finite element discretizations, several additional norms for the numerical trace have to be used and the equivale…
Robust discretization methods for (nearly-incompressible) linear elasticity are free of volume-locking and gradient-robust. While volume-locking is a well-known problem that can be dealt with in many different discretization approaches, the concept of gradient-robustness for linear elasticity is new. We discuss both aspects and propose novel Hybrid Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods for linear elasticity. The starting point for these methods is a divergence-conforming discretization. As a consequence of its well-behaved Stokes limit the method is gradient-robust and free of volume-locking. T…
A strategy to couple continuous Galerkin (CG) and hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretizations based only on the HDG hybrid variable is presented for linear thermal and elastic problems. The hybrid CG-HDG coupling exploits the definition of the numerical flux and the trace of the solution on the mesh faces to impose the transmission conditions between the CG and HDG subdomains. The continuity of the solution is imposed in the CG problem via Nitsche's method, whereas the equilibrium of the flux at the interface is naturally enforced as a Neumann condition in the HDG global problem.…
This paper proposes semi-discrete and fully discrete hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods for the Burgers' equation in two and three dimensions. In the spatial discretization, we use piecewise polynomials of degrees $ k \ (k \geq 1), k-1$ and $ l \ (l=k-1; k) $ to approximate the scalar function, flux variable and the interface trace of scalar function, respectively. In the full discretization method, we apply a backward Euler scheme for the temporal discretization. Optimal a priori error estimates are derived. Numerical experiments are presented to support the theoretical results…

We propose a multilevel approach for trace systems resulting from hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods. The key is to blend ideas from nested dissection, domain decomposition, and high-order characteristic of HDG discretizations. Specifically, we first create a coarse solver by eliminating and/or limiting the front growth in nested dissection. This is accomplished by projecting the trace data into a sequence of same or high-order polynomials on a set of increasingly $h-$coarser edges/faces. We then combine the coarse solver with a block-Jacobi fine scale solver to form a two-level s…
We introduce a homogeneous multigrid method in the sense that it uses the same HDG discretization scheme for Poisson's equation on all levels. In particular, we construct a stable injection operator and prove optimal convergence of the method under the assumption of elliptic regularity. Numerical experiments underline our analytical findings.
We propose to use a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method combined with the continuous Galerkin (CG) method to approximate Maxwell's equations. We make two contributions in this paper. First, even though there are many papers using HDG methods to approximate Maxwell's equations, to our knowledge they all assume that the coefficients are smooth (or constant). Here, we derive optimal convergence estimates for our HGD-CG approximation when the electromagnetic coefficients are {\em piecewise} smooth. This requires new techniques of analysis. Second, we use CG elements to approximate the…
A balancing domain decomposition by constraints preconditioner for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin discretization of an elliptic optimal control problem
We study a posteriori error analysis of linear-quadratic boundary control problems under bilateral box constraints on the control which acts through a Neumann type boundary condition. We adopt the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method as discretization technique, and the flux variables, the scalar variables and the boundary trace variables are all approximated by polynomials of degree k. As for the control variable, it is discretized by the variational discretization concept. Then an efficient and reliable a posteriori error estimator is introduced, and we prove that the error estimator p…

We present some new analytical tools for the error analysis of hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for linear elasticity. These tools allow us to analyze more variants of HDG method using the projection-based approach, which renders the error analysis simple and concise. The key result is a tailored projection for the Lehrenfeld-Schöberl type HDG (HDG+ for simplicity) methods. By using the projection we recover the error estimates of HDG+ for steady-state and time-harmonic elasticity in a simpler analysis. We also present a semi-discrete (in space) HDG+ method for transient elasti…
We present a priori and a posteriori error analysis of a high order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method applied to a semi-linear elliptic problem posed on a piecewise curved, non polygonal domain. We approximate $Ω$ by a polygonal subdomain $Ω_h$ and propose an HDG discretization, which is shown to be optimal under mild assumptions related to the non-linear source term and the distance between the boundaries of the polygonal subdomain $Ω_h$ and the true domain $Ω$. Moreover, a local non-linear post-processing of the scalar unknown is proposed and shown to provide an additional ord…
We study Hibridizable Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretizations for a class of non-linear interior elliptic boundary value problems posed in curved domains where both the source term and the diffusion coefficient are non-linear. We consider the cases where the non-linear diffusion coefficient depends on the solution and on the gradient of the solution. To sidestep the need for curved elements, the discrete solution is computed on a polygonal subdomain that is not assumed to interpolate the true boundary, giving rise to an unfitted computational mesh. We show that, under mild assumptions on …
A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) formulation of the linearized incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, known as Oseen equations, is presented. The Cauchy stress formulation is considered and the symmetry of the stress tensor and the mixed variable, namely the scaled strain-rate tensor, is enforced pointwise via Voigt notation. Using equal-order polynomial approximations of degree k for all variables, HDG provides a stable discretization. Moreover, owing to Voigt notation, optimal convergence of order k+1 is obtained for velocity, pressure and strain-rate tensor and a local postproce…

We present a novel (high-order) hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) scheme for the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem. The (moving domain) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are discretized using a divergence-free HDG scheme within the arbitrary Lagrangian-Euler (ALE) framework. The nonlinear elasticity equations are discretized using a novel HDG scheme with an H(curl)-conforming velocity/displacement approximation. We further use a combination of the Nitsche's method (for the tangential component) and the mortar method (for the normal component) to enforce the interface condi…
In their article "Coupling at a distance HDG and BEM", Cockburn, Sayas and Solano proposed an iterative coupling of the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method (HDG) and the boundary element method (BEM) to solve an exterior Dirichlet problem. The novelty of the numerical scheme consisted of using a computational domain for the HDG discretization whose boundary did not coincide with the coupling interface. In their article, the authors provided extensive numerical evidence for convergence, but the proof of convergence and the error analysis remained elusive at that time. In this article we …
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations with exact representation of the geometry and local polynomial degree adaptivity are revisited. Hybridization techniques are employed to reduce the computational cost of DG approximations and devise the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method. Exact geometry described by non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) is integrated into HDG using the framework of the NURBS-enhanced finite element method (NEFEM). Moreover, optimal convergence and superconvergence properties of HDG-Voigt formulation in presence of symmetric second-order tensors are exp…
We present a parallel computing strategy for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) nested geometric multigrid (GMG) solver. Parallel GMG solvers require a combination of coarse-grain and fine-grain parallelism to improve time to solution performance. In this work we focus on fine-grain parallelism. We use Intel's second generation Xeon Phi (Knights Landing) many-core processor. The GMG method achieves ideal convergence rates of $0.2$ or less, for high polynomial orders. A matrix free (assembly free) technique is exploited to save considerable memory usage and increase arithmetic intensit…
We present a scalable block preconditioning strategy for the trace system coming from the high-order hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization of incompressible resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). We construct the block preconditioner with a least squares commutator (BFBT) approximation for the inverse of the Schur complement that segregates out the pressure unknowns of the trace system. The remaining velocity, magnetic field, and Lagrange multiplier unknowns form a coupled nodal unknown block (the upper block), for which a system algebraic multigrid (AMG) is used for the approx…
We consider finite element discretizations of Maxwell's equations coupled with a non-local hydrodynamic Drude model that accurately accounts for electron motions in metallic nanostructures. Specifically, we focus on a posteriori error estimation and mesh adaptivity, which is of particular interest since the electromagnetic field usually exhibits strongly localized features near the interface between metals and their surrounding media. We propose a novel residual-based error estimator that is shown to be reliable and efficient. We also present a set of numerical examples where the estimator dri…
