In their article "Coupling at a distance HDG and BEM", Cockburn, Sayas and Solano proposed an iterative coupling of the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method (HDG) and the boundary element method (BEM) to solve an exterior Dirichlet problem. The novelty of the numerical scheme consisted of using a computational domain for the HDG discretization whose boundary did not coincide with the coupling interface. In their article, the authors provided extensive numerical evidence for convergence, but the proof of convergence and the error analysis remained elusive at that time. In this article we fill the gap by proving the convergence of a relaxation of the algorithm and providing a priori error estimates for the numerical solution.
The present paper proposes an inf-sup stable divergence free virtual element method and associated a priori, and a posteriori error analysis to approximate the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Stokes spectral problem in one shot. For the a priori analysis, we take advantage of the compactness of the solution operator to prove convergence of the eigenfunctions and double order convergence of eigenvalues. Additionally we also propose an a posteriori estimator of residual type, which we prove is reliable and efficient, in order to perform adaptive refinements that allow to recover the optima…
An extra-stabilised Morley finite element method (FEM) directly computes guaranteed lower eigenvalue bounds with optimal a priori convergence rates for the bi-Laplace Dirichlet eigenvalues. The smallness assumption $\min\{λ_h,λ\}h_{\max}^{4}$ $\le 184.9570$ in $2$D (resp. $\le 21.2912$ in $3$D) on the maximal mesh-size $h_{\max}$ makes the computed $k$-th discrete eigenvalue $λ_h\le λ$ a lower eigenvalue bound for the $k$-th Dirichlet eigenvalue $λ$. This holds for multiple and clusters of eigenvalues and serves for the localisation of the bi-Laplacian Dirichlet eigenvalues in particular for c…
A number of non-standard finite element methods have been proposed in recent years, each of which derives from a specific class of PDE-constrained norm minimization problems. The most notable examples are $\mathcal{L}\mathcal{L}^*$ methods. In this work, we argue that all high-order methods in this class should be expected to deliver substandard uniform h-refinement convergence rates. In fact, one may not even see rates proportional to the polynomial order $p > 1$ when the exact solution is a constant function. We show that the convergence rate is limited by the regularity of an extraneous Lag…
Solving the trust-region subproblem (TRS) plays a key role in numerical optimization and many other applications. The generalized Lanczos trust-region (GLTR) method is a well-known Lanczos type approach for solving a large-scale TRS. The method projects the original large-scale TRS onto a $k$ dimensional Krylov subspace, whose orthonormal basis is generated by the symmetric Lanczos process, and computes an approximate solution from the underlying subspace. There have been some a-priori error bounds for the optimal solution and the optimal objective value in the literature, but no a-priori resu…
Approximations of the Dirac delta distribution are commonly used to create sequences of smooth functions approximating nonsmooth (generalized) functions, via convolution. In this work, we show a priori rates of convergence of this approximation process in standard Sobolev norms, with minimal regularity assumptions on the approximation of the Dirac delta distribution. The application of these estimates to the numerical solution of elliptic problems with singularly supported forcing terms allows us to provide sharp $H^1$ and $L^2$ error estimates for the corresponding regularized problem. As an …
A discontinuous Galerkin pressure correction numerical method for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is formulated and analyzed. We prove unconditional stability of the propose scheme. Convergence of the discrete velocity is established by deriving a priori error estimates. Numerical results verify the convergence rates.
In this paper, we propose a new family of H(curl^2)-conforming elements for the quad-curl eigenvalue problem in 2D. The accuracy of this family is one order higher than that in [32]. We prove a priori and a posteriori error estimates. The a priori estimate of the eigenvalue with a convergence order 2(s-1) is obtained if the eigenvector u\in H^{s+1}(Ω). For the a posteriori estimate, by analyzing the associated source problem, we obtain lower and upper bounds for the eigenvector in an energy norm and an upper bound for the eigenvalues. Numerical examples are presented for validation.
In 1994, Nessyahu, Tadmor and Tassa studied convergence rates of monotone finite volume approximations of conservation laws. For compactly supported, $\Lip^+$-bounded initial data they showed a first-order convergence rate in the Wasserstein distance. Our main result is to prove that this rate is optimal. We further provide numerical evidence indicating that the rate in the case of $\Lip^+$-unbounded initial data is worse than first-order.
Conditional stability estimates require additional regularization for obtaining stable approximate solutions if the validity area of such estimates is not completely known. In this context, we consider ill-posed nonlinear inverse problems in Hilbert scales satisfying conditional stability estimates characterized by general concave index functions. For that case, we exploit Tikhonov regularization and provide convergence and convergence rates of regularized solutions for both deterministic and stochastic noise. We further discuss a priori and a posteriori parameter choice rules and illustrate t…
Considering fractional fast diffusion equations on bounded open polyhedral domains in $\mathbb{R}^N$, we give a fully Galerkin approximation of the solutions by $C^0$-piecewise linear finite elements in space and backward Euler discretization in time, a priori estimates and the rates of convergence for the approximate solutions are proved, which extends the results of \emph{Carsten Ebmeyer and Wen Bin Liu, SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 46(2008), pp. 2393--2410}. We also generalize the a priori estimates and the rates of convergence to a parabolic integral equation under the framework of \emph{Qiang Du…
We present a priori and a posteriori error analysis of a high order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method applied to a semi-linear elliptic problem posed on a piecewise curved, non polygonal domain. We approximate $Ω$ by a polygonal subdomain $Ω_h$ and propose an HDG discretization, which is shown to be optimal under mild assumptions related to the non-linear source term and the distance between the boundaries of the polygonal subdomain $Ω_h$ and the true domain $Ω$. Moreover, a local non-linear post-processing of the scalar unknown is proposed and shown to provide an additional ord…
Existing a priori convergence results of the discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin method to solve the problem of linear elasticity are improved. Using duality arguments, we show that higher convergence rates for the displacement can be obtained. Post-processing techniques are introduced in order to prove superconvergence and numerical experiments {\color{black} confirm} our theory.
This paper is concerned with a priori error estimates for the local incremental minimization scheme, which is an implicit time discretization method for the approximation of rate-independent systems with non-convex energies. We first show by means of a counterexample that one cannot expect global convergence of the scheme without any further assumptions on the energy. For the class of uniformly convex energies, we derive error estimates of optimal order, provided that the Lipschitz constant of the load is sufficiently small. Afterwards, we extend this result to the case of an energy, which is …
Accurate simulation of nonlinear acoustic waves is essential for the continued development of a wide range of (high-intensity) focused ultrasound applications. This article explores mixed finite element formulations of classical strongly damped quasilinear models of ultrasonic wave propagation; the Kuznetsov and Westervelt equations. Such formulations allow simultaneous retrieval of the acoustic particle velocity and either the pressure or acoustic velocity potential, thus characterizing the entire ultrasonic field at once. Using non-standard energy analysis and a fixed-point technique, we est…
This paper analyzes the generalization error of two-layer neural networks for computing the ground state of the Schrödinger operator on a $d$-dimensional hypercube. We prove that the convergence rate of the generalization error is independent of the dimension $d$, under the a priori assumption that the ground state lies in a spectral Barron space. We verify such assumption by proving a new regularity estimate for the ground state in the spectral Barron space. The later is achieved by a fixed point argument based on the Krein-Rutman theorem.
We derive an a priori parameter range for overrelaxation of the Sinkhorn algorithm, which guarantees global convergence and a strictly faster asymptotic local convergence. Guided by the spectral analysis of the linearized problem we pursue a zero cost procedure to choose a near optimal relaxation parameter.
