A family of implicit-in-time mixed finite element schemes is presented for the numerical approximation of the acoustic wave equation. The mixed space discretization is based on the displacement form of the wave equation and the time-stepping method employs a three-level one-parameter scheme. A rigorous stability analysis is presented based on energy estimation and sharp stability results are obtained. A convergence analysis is carried out and optimal a priori $L^\infty(L^2)$ error estimates for both displacement and pressure are derived.
In this work, we derive a priori error estimate of the mixed residual method when solving some elliptic PDEs. Our work is the first theoretical study of this method. We prove that the neural network solutions will converge if we increase the training samples and network size without any constraint on the ratio of training samples to the network size. Besides, our results suggest that the mixed residual method can recover high order derivatives better than the deep Ritz method, which has also been verified by our numerical experiments.
The aim of the present work is to derive a error estimates for the Laplace eigenvalue problem in mixed form, by means of a virtual element method. With the aid of the theory for non-compact operators, we prove that the proposed method is spurious free and convergent. We prove optimal order error estimates for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Finally, we report numerical tests to confirm the theoretical results together with a rigorous computational analysis of the effects of the stabilization in the computation of the spectrum.
Least-Squares versus Partial Least-Squares Finite Element Methods: Robust A Priori and A Posteriori Error Estimates of Augmented Mixed Finite Element Methods
The main aim of this article is to analyze mixed finite element method for the second order Dirichlet boundary control problem. Therein, we develop both a priori and a posteriori error analysis using the energy space based approach. We obtain optimal order a priori error estimates in the energy norm and $L^2$-norm with the help of auxiliary problems. The reliability and the efficiency of proposed a posteriori error estimator is discussed using the Helmholtz decomposition. Numerical experiments are presented to confirm the theoretical findings.
Accurate simulation of nonlinear acoustic waves is essential for the continued development of a wide range of (high-intensity) focused ultrasound applications. This article explores mixed finite element formulations of classical strongly damped quasilinear models of ultrasonic wave propagation; the Kuznetsov and Westervelt equations. Such formulations allow simultaneous retrieval of the acoustic particle velocity and either the pressure or acoustic velocity potential, thus characterizing the entire ultrasonic field at once. Using non-standard energy analysis and a fixed-point technique, we est…
We propose and analyze an augmented mixed finite element method for the pseudostress-velocity formulation of the stationary convective Brinkman-Forchheimer problem in $\mathrm{R}^d$, $d\in \{2,3\}$. Since the convective and Forchheimer terms forces the velocity to live in a smaller space than usual, we augment the variational formulation with suitable Galerkin type terms. The resulting augmented scheme is written equivalently as a fixed point equation, so that the well-known Schauder and Banach theorems, combined with the Lax-Milgram theorem, allow to prove the unique solvability of the contin…
In this paper, we develop and analyze a trilinear immersed finite element method for solving three-dimensional elliptic interface problems. The proposed method can be utilized on interface-unfitted meshes such as Cartesian grids consisting of cuboids. We establish the trace and inverse inequalities for trilinear IFE functions for interface elements with arbitrary interface-cutting configuration. Optimal a priori error estimates are rigorously proved in both energy and L2 norms. Numerical examples are provided not only to verify our theoretical results but also to demonstrate the applicability …
This paper develops the a priori analysis of a mixed finite element method for the filtration of an incompressible fluid through a non-deformable saturated porous medium with heterogeneous permeability. Flows are governed by the Brinkman--Forchheimer and Darcy equations in the more and less permeable regions, respectively, and the corresponding transmission conditions are given by mass conservation and continuity of momentum. We consider the standard mixed formulation in the Brinkman--Forchheimer domain and the dual-mixed one in the Darcy region, and we impose the continuity of the normal velo…
For the Stokes equation over 2D and 3D domains, explicit a posteriori and a priori error estimation are novelly developed for the finite element solution. The difficulty in handling the divergence-free condition of the Stokes equation is solved by utilizing the extended hypercircle method along with the Scott-Vogelius finite element scheme. Since all terms in the error estimation have explicit values, by further applying the interval arithmetic and verified computing algorithms, the computed results provide rigorous estimation for the approximation error. As an application of the proposed erro…
We consider a fractional order viscoelasticity problem modelled by a power-law type stress relaxation function. This viscoelastic problem is a Volterra integral equation of the second kind with a weakly singular kernel where the convolution integral corresponds to fractional order differentiation/integration. We use a spatial finite element method and a finite difference scheme in time. Due to the weak singularity, fractional order integration in time is managed approximately by linear interpolation so that we can formulate a fully discrete problem. In this paper, we present a stability bound …
We consider mixed finite element methods with exact symmetric stress tensors. We derive a new quasi-optimal a priori error estimate uniformly valid with respect to the compressibility. For the a posteriori error analysis we consider the Prager-Synge hypercircle principle and introduce a new estimate uniformly valid in the incompressible limit. All estimates are validated by numerical examples.
In this paper, we introduce new stable mixed finite elements of any order on polytopal mesh for solving second order elliptic problem. We establish optimal order error estimates for velocity and super convergence for pressure. Numerical experiments are conducted for our mixed elements of different orders on 2D and 3D spaces that confirm the theory.
This paper proves error estimates for $H^2$ conforming finite elements for equations which model the flow of surfaces by different powers of the mean curvature (this includes mean curvature flow). for an adapted scheme originally proposed in [17] for the inverse mean curvature flow. The scheme is based on a known regularization procedure and produces different kinds of errors, a regularization error, a finite element discretization error for the regularized problems and a full error. While in the literature and own previous work different aspects of the aforementioned error types are treated, …
We consider mixed finite element methods for linear elasticity where the symmetry of the stress tensor is weakly enforced. Both an a priori and a posteriori error analysis are given for several known families of methods that are uniformly valid in the incompressible limit. A posteriori estimates are derived for both the compressible and incompressible cases. The results are verified by numerical examples.
We consider mixed finite element approximations of viscous, plastic Bingham flow in a cylindrical pipe. A novel a priori and a posteriori error analysis is introduced which is based on a discrete mesh dependent norm for the normalized Lagrange multiplier. This allows proving stability for various conforming finite elements. Numerical examples are presented to support the theory and to demonstrate adaptive mesh refinement.

For a generalized Hodge Laplace equation, we prove the quasi-optimal convergence rate of an adaptive mixed finite element method. This adaptive method can control the error in the natural mixed variational norm when the space of harmonic forms is trivial. In particular, we obtain new quasi-optimal adaptive mixed methods for the Hodge Laplace, Poisson, and Stokes equations. Comparing to existing adaptive mixed methods, the new methods control errors in both variables.
Mixed finite element methods are considered for a ferrofluid flow model with magnetization paralleled to the magnetic field. The ferrofluid model is a coupled system of the Maxwell equations and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. By skillfully introducing some new variables, the model is rewritten as several decoupled subsystems that can be solved independently. Mixed finite element formulations are given to discretize the decoupled systems with proper finite element spaces. Existence and uniqueness of the mixed finite element solutions are shown, and optimal order error estimates are…
This work proposes a mixed finite element method for the Biot poroelasticity equations that employs the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas finite element space for the solid displacement and piecewise constants for the fluid pressure. The method is based on the formulation of linearized elasticity as a weighted vector Laplace problem. By introducing the solid rotation and fluid flux as auxiliary variables, we form a four-field formulation of the Biot system, which is discretized using conforming mixed finite element spaces. The auxiliary variables are subsequently removed from the system in a local h…

Semi-discrete and fully discrete mixed finite element methods are considered for Maxwell-model-based problems of wave propagation in linear viscoelastic solid. This mixed finite element framework allows the use of a large class of existing mixed conforming finite elements for elasticity in the spatial discretization. In the fully discrete scheme, a Crank-Nicolson scheme is adopted for the approximation of the temporal derivatives of stress and velocity variables. Error estimates of the semi-discrete and fully discrete schemes, as well as an unconditional stability result for the fully discrete…
We propose a mixed finite element method for Stokes flow with one degree of freedom per element and facet of simplicial grids. The method is derived by considering the vorticity-velocity-pressure formulation and eliminating the vorticity locally through the use of a quadrature rule. The discrete solution is pointwise divergence-free and the method is pressure robust. The theoretically derived convergence rates are confirmed by numerical experiments.
In this paper, we present a study on the effect of penalty term in the mixed Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Method for the biharmonic equation proposed by \cite{gudi2008mixed}. The proposed mixed Discontinuous Galerkin Method showed sub-optimal rates of convergence for piecewise quadratic elements and no significant convergence rates for piecewise linear elements. We show that by choosing the penalty term proportional to $|e_k|^{-1}$ instead of $|e_k|^{-3}$, ensures an optimal rate of convergence for the approximation, including for piecewise linear elements. Finally, we present numeric…
In this paper, we propose an extended mixed finite element method for elliptic interface problems. By adding some stabilization terms, we present a mixed approximation form based on Brezzi-Douglas-Marini element space and the piecewise constant function space, and show that the discrete inf-sup constant is independent of how the interface intersects the triangulation. Furthermore, we derive that the optimal convergence holds independent of the location of the interface relative to the mesh. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to verify our theoretical results.
We consider a mixed hybrid finite element formulation for coupled poromechanics. A stabilization strategy based on a macro-element approach is advanced to eliminate the spurious pressure modes appearing in undrained/incompressible conditions. The efficient solution of the stabilized mixed hybrid block system is addressed by developing a class of block triangular preconditioners based on a Schur-complement approximation strategy. Robustness, computational efficiency and scalability of the proposed approach are theoretically discussed and tested using challenging benchmark problems on massively …
A new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element (HMDGFE) method is constructed for incompressible miscible displacement problem. In this method, the hybrid mixed finite element (HMFE) procedure is considered to solve pressure and velocity equations, and a new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin procedure is constructed to solve the concentration equation with upwind technique. Compared with other traditional discontinuous Galerkin methods, the new method can reach global systems with less unknowns and sparser stencils. The consistency and conservation of the method are analyzed, the s…
We study a non standard mixed formulation of the Poisson problem, sometimes known as dual mixed formulation. For reasons related to the equilibration of the flux, we use finite elements that are conforming in H(div) for the approximation of the gradients, even if the formulation would allow for discontinuous finite elements. The scheme is not uniformly inf-sup stable, but we can show existence and uniqueness of the solution, as well as optimal error estimates for the gradient variable when suitable regularity assumptions are made. Several additional remarks complete the paper, shedding some li…
This paper presents a lowest-order immersed Raviart-Thomas mixed triangular finite element method for solving elliptic interface problems on unfitted meshes independent of the interface. In order to achieve the optimal convergence rates on unfitted meshes, an immersed finite element finite (IFE) is constructed by modifying the traditional Raviart-Thomas element. Some important properties are derived including the unisolvence of IFE basis functions, the optimal approximation capabilities of the IFE space and the corresponding commuting digram. Optimal error estimates are rigorously proved for t…
For the planar Navier--Lamé equation in mixed form with symmetric stress tensors, we prove the uniform quasi-optimal convergence of an adaptive method based on the hybridized mixed finite element proposed in [Gong, Wu, and Xu: Numer.~Math., 141 (2019), pp.~569--604]. The main ingredients in the analysis consist of a discrete a posteriori upper bound and a quasi-orthogonality result for the stress field under the mixed boundary condition. Compared with existing adaptive methods, the proposed adaptive algorithm could be directly applied to the traction boundary condition and be easily implemente…
A number of non-standard finite element methods have been proposed in recent years, each of which derives from a specific class of PDE-constrained norm minimization problems. The most notable examples are $\mathcal{L}\mathcal{L}^*$ methods. In this work, we argue that all high-order methods in this class should be expected to deliver substandard uniform h-refinement convergence rates. In fact, one may not even see rates proportional to the polynomial order $p > 1$ when the exact solution is a constant function. We show that the convergence rate is limited by the regularity of an extraneous Lag…
