This work provides an efficient virtual element scheme for the modeling of nonlinear elastodynamics undergoing large deformations. The virtual element method (VEM) has been applied to various engineering problems such as elasto-plasticity, multiphysics, damage and fracture mechanics. This work focuses on the extension of VEM towards dynamic applications. Within this framework, we employ low-order ansatz functions in one, two and three dimensions that having arbitrary convex or concave polygonal elements. The formulations considered in this contribution are based on minimization of potential function for both the static and the dynamic behavior. While the stiffness-matrix needs a suitable stabilization, the mass-matrix can be calculated using only the projection part. For the implicit time integration scheme, Newmark-Method is used. To show the performance of the method, various numerical examples in 1D, 2D and 3D are presented.
In this paper, we review recent results on the conforming virtual element approximation of polyharmonic and elastodynamics problems. The structure and the content of this review is motivated by three paradigmatic examples of applications: classical and anisotropic Cahn-Hilliard equation and phase field models for brittle fracture, that are briefly discussed in the first part of the paper. We present and discuss the mathematical details of the conforming virtual element approximation of linear polyharmonic problems, the classical Cahn-Hilliard equation and linear elastodynamics problems.
We design the conforming virtual element method for the numerical approximation of the two dimensional elastodynamics problem. We prove stability and convergence of the semi-discrete approximation and derive optimal error estimates under $h$- and $p$-refinement in both the energy and the $L^2$ norms. The performance of the proposed virtual element method is assessed on a set of different computational meshes, including non-convex cells up to order four in the $h$-refinement setting. Exponential convergence is also experimentally observed under p-refinement. Finally, we present a dispersion-dis…

In this paper, we use the first-order virtual element method (VEM) to investigate the effect of shape quality of polyhedra in the estimation of the critical time step for explicit three-dimensional elastodynamic finite element (FE) simulations. Low-quality finite elements are common when meshing realistic complex components, and while tetrahedral meshing technology is generally robust, meshing algorithms cannot guarantee high-quality meshes for arbitrary geometries or for non-water-tight computer-aided design models. For reliable simulations on such meshes, we consider FE meshes with tetrahedr…
We present the Cell-based Maximum Entropy (CME) approximants in E3 space by constructing the smooth approximation distance function to polyhedral surfaces. CME is a meshfree approximation method combining the properties of the Maximum Entropy approximants and the compact support of element-based interpolants. The method is evaluated in problems of large strain elastodynamics for three-dimensional (3D) continua using the well-established Meshless Total Lagrangian Explicit Dynamics (MTLED) method. The accuracy and efficiency of the method is assessed in several numerical examples in terms of com…
We propose a time-adaptive predictor/multi-corrector method to solve hyperbolic partial differential equations, based on the generalized-$α$ scheme that provides user-control on the numerical dissipation and second-order accuracy in time. Our time adaptivity uses an error estimation that exploits the recursive structure of the variable updates. The predictor/multicorrector method explicitly updates the equation system but computes the residual of the system implicitly. We analyze the method's stability and describe how to determine the parameters that ensure high-frequency dissipation and accu…
An extension of the two-step staggered time discretization of linear elastodynamics in stress-velocity form to systems involving internal variables subjected to a possibly non-linear dissipative evolution is proposed. The original scheme is thus enhanced by another step for the internal variables which, in general, is implicit, although even this step might be explicit if no spatial gradients of the internal variables are involved. Using an abstract Banach-space formulation, a-priori estimates and convergence are proved under a CFL condition. The developed three-step scheme finds applications …
A structure-preserving integrator for incompressible finite elastodynamics based on a grad-div stabilized mixed formulation with particular emphasis on stretch-based material models
We propose a combined nodal integration and virtual element method for compressible and nearly incompressible elasticity, wherein the strain is averaged at the nodes from the strain of surrounding virtual elements. For the strain averaging procedure, a nodal averaging operator is constructed using a generalization to virtual elements of the node-based uniform strain approach for finite elements. We refer to the proposed technique as the node-based uniform strain virtual element method (NVEM). No additional degrees of freedom are introduced in this approach, thus resulting in a displacement-bas…
In this paper, we present a novel nodal integration scheme for meshfree Galerkin methods that draws on the mathematical framework of the virtual element method. We adopt linear maximum-entropy basis functions for the discretization of field variables, although the proposed scheme is applicable to any linear meshfree approximant. In our approach, the weak form integrals are nodally integrated using nodal representative cells that carry the nodal displacements and state variables such as strains and stresses. The nodal integration is performed using the virtual element decomposition, wherein the…

We present a Virtual Element Method for the 3D linear elasticity problems, based on Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. In the framework of the small strain theory, we propose a low-order scheme with a-priori symmetric stresses and continuous tractions across element interfaces. A convergence and stability analysis is developed and we confirm the theoretical predictions via some numerical tests.
This work considers the application of the virtual element method to plane hyperelasticity problems with a novel approach to the selection of stabilization parameters. The method is applied to a range of numerical examples and well known strain energy functions, including neo-Hookean, Mooney-Rivlin and Ogden material models. For each of the strain energy functions the performance of the method under varying degrees of compressibility, including near-incompressibility, is investigated. Through these examples the convergence behaviour of the virtual element method is demonstrated. Furthermore, t…
