Simulation of fracturing processes in porous rocks can be divided into two main branches: (i) modeling the rock as a continuum which is enhanced with special features to account for fractures, or (ii) modeling the rock by a discrete (or discontinuous) approach that describes the material directly as a collection of separate blocks or particles, e.g., as in the discrete element method (DEM). In the modified discrete element (MDEM) method, the effective forces between virtual particles are modified in all regions, without failing elements, so that they reproduce the discretization of a first order finite element method (FEM) for linear elasticity. This provides an expression of the virtual forces in terms of general Hook's macro-parameters. Previously, MDEM has been formulated through an analogy with linear elements for FEM. We show the connection between MDEM and the virtual element method (VEM), which is a generalization of FEM to polyhedral grids. Unlike standard FEM, which computes strain-states in a reference space, MDEM and VEM compute stress-states directly in real space. This connection leads us to a new derivation of the MDEM method. Moreover, it gives the basis for coupling (M)DEM to domain with linear elasticity described by polyhedral grids, which makes it easier to apply realistic boundary conditions in hydraulic-fracturing simulations. This approach also makes it possible to combine fine-scale (M)DEM behavior near the fracturing region with linear elasticity on complex reservoir grids in the far-field region without regridding. To demonstrate the simulation of hydraulic fracturing, the coupled (M)DEM-VEM method is implemented using the Matlab Reservoir Simulation Toolbox (MRST) and linked to an industry-standard reservoir simulator.
Flow in fractured porous media is modeled frequently by discrete fracture-matrix approaches where fractures are treated as dimensionally reduced manifolds. Generalizing earlier work we focus on two-phase flow in time-dependent fracture geometries including the fracture's aperture. We present the derivation of a reduced model for immiscible two-phase flow in porous media. For the reduced model we present a fully conforming finite-volume discretization coupled with a moving-mesh method. This method permits arbitrary movement of facets of the triangulation while being fully conservative. In numer…
Convection-driven cooling in porous media influences thermo-poro-mechanical stresses, thereby causing deformation. These processes are strongly influenced by the presence of fractures, which dominate flow and heat transfer. At the same time, the fractures deform and propagate in response to changes in the stress state. Mathematically, the model governing the physics is tightly coupled and must account for the strong discontinuities introduced by the fractures. Over the last decade, and motivated by a number of porous media applications, research into such coupled models has advanced modelling …
In this article we formulate and implement a computational multiphase periporomechanics model for unguided fracturing in unsaturated porous media. The same governing equation for the solid phase applies on and off cracks. Crack formation in this framework is autonomous, requiring no prior estimates of crack topology. As a new contribution, an energy-based criterion for arbitrary crack formation is formulated using the peridynamic effective force state for unsaturated porous media. Unsaturated fluid flow in the fracture space is modeled in a simplified way in line with the nonlocal formulation …
Many subsurface engineering applications involve tight-coupling between fluid flow, solid deformation, fracturing, and similar processes. To better understand the complex interplay of different governing equations, and therefore design efficient and safe operations, numerical simulations are widely used. Given the relatively long time-scales of interest, fully-implicit time-stepping schemes are often necessary to avoid time-step stability restrictions. A major computational bottleneck for these methods, however, is the linear solver. These systems are extremely large and ill-conditioned. Becau…
In the present contribution, we construct a virtual element (VE) discretization for the problem of miscible displacement of one incompressible fluid by another, described by a time-dependent coupled system of nonlinear partial differential equations. Our work represents a first study to investigate the premises of virtual element methods (VEM) for complex fluid flow problems. We combine the VEM discretization with a time stepping scheme and develop a complete theoretical analysis of the method under the assumption of a regular solution. The scheme is then tested both on a regular and on a more…
In this paper, a novel meshless method that can handle porous flow problems with singular source terms is developed by virtually constructing the node control domains. By defining the connectable node cloud, this novel meshless method uses the integral of the diffusion term and generalized difference operators to derive overdetermined equations of the node control volumes. An empirical method of calculating reliable node control volumes and a triangulation-based method to determine the connectable point cloud are developed. NCDMM only focuses on the volume of the node control domain rather tha…
Discrete Fracture and Matrix (DFM) models describe fractured porous media as complex sets of 2D planar polygons embedded in a 3D matrix representing the surrounding porous medium. The numerical simulation of the flow in a DFM requires the discretization of partial differential equations on the three dimensional matrix, the planar fractures and the one dimensional fracture intersections, and suitable coupling conditions between entities of different dimensionality need to be added at the various interfaces to close the problem. The present work proposes an arbitrary order implementation of the …
We propose a quality-based optimization strategy to reduce the total number of degrees of freedom associated to a discrete problem defined over a polygonal tessellation with the Virtual Element Method. The presented Quality Agglomeration algorithm relies only on the geometrical properties of the problem polygonal mesh, agglomerating groups of neighboring elements. We test this approach in the context of fractured porous media, in which the generation of a global conforming mesh on a Discrete Fracture Network leads to a considerable number of unknowns, due to the presence of highly complex geom…
A solution technique is proposed for flows in porous media that guarantees local conservation of mass. We first compute a flux field to balance the mass source and then exploit exact co-chain complexes to generate a solenoidal correction. A reduced basis method based on proper orthogonal decomposition is employed to construct the correction and we show that mass balance is ensured regardless of the quality of the reduced basis approximation. The method is directly applicable to mixed finite and virtual element methods, among other structure-preserving discretization techniques, and we present …
The numerical simulation of physical processes in the underground frequently entails challenges related to the geometry and/or data. The former are mainly due to the shape of sedimentary layers and the presence of fractures and faults, while the latter are connected to the properties of the rock matrix which might vary abruptly in space. The development of approximation schemes has recently focused on the overcoming of such difficulties with the objective of obtaining numerical schemes with good approximation properties. In this work we carry out a numerical study on the performances of the Mi…
