B20-type MnSi is the prototype magnetic skyrmion material. Thin films of MnSi show a higher Curie temperature than their bulk counterpart. However, it is not yet clear what mechanism leads to the increase of the Curie temperature. In this work, we grow MnSi films on Si(100) and Si(111) substrates with a broad variation in their structures. By controlling the Mn thickness and annealing parameters, the pure MnSi phase of polycrystalline and textured nature as well as the mixed phase of MnSi and MnSi1.7 are obtained. Surprisingly, all these MnSi films show an increased Curie temperature of up to around 43 K. The Curie temperature is likely independent of the structural parameters within our accessibility including the film thickness above a threshold, strain, cell volume and the mixture with MnSi1.7. However, a pronounced phonon softening is observed for all samples, which can tentatively be attributed to slight Mn excess from stoichiometry, leading to the increased Curie temperature.
We report a study of the strain state of epitaxial MnSi films on Si(111) substrates in the thick film limit (100-500~Å) as a function of film thickness using polarization-dependent extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). All films investigated are phase-pure and of high quality with a sharp interface between MnSi and Si. The investigated MnSi films are in a thickness regime where the magnetic transition temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$ assumes a thickness-independent enhanced value of $\geq$43~K as compared with that of bulk MnSi, where $T_\mathrm{c} \approx 29~{\rm K}$. A detailed refinem…
Magnetic skyrmions have been suggested as information carriers for future spintronic devices. As the first material with experimentally confirmed skyrmions, B20-type MnSi was the research focus for decades. Although B20-MnSi films have been successfully grown on Si(111) substrates, there is no report about B20-MnSi films on Si(100) substrates, which would be more preferred for practical applications. In this letter, we present the first preparation of B20-MnSi on Si(100) substrates. It is realized by sub-second solid-state reaction between Mn and Si via flash-lamp annealing at ambient pressure…
Based on first-principles electron structure calculations and employing the frozen-magnon approximation we study the exchange interactions in a series of transition-metal binary alloys crystallizing in the zinc-blende structure and calculate the Curie temperature within both the mean-field approximation (MFA) and random-phase approximation (RPA). We study two Cr compounds, CrAs and CrSe, and four Mn compounds: MnSi, MnGe, MnAs and MnC. MnC, MnSi and MnGe are isovalent to CrAs and MnAs is isoelectronic with CrSe. Ferromagnetism is particular stable for CrAs, MnSi and MnGe: All three compounds s…
In order to combine silicon technology with the functionality of magnetic systems, a number of ferromagnetic (FM) materials have been suggested for the fabrication of metal/semiconductor heterojunctions. In this work, we present a systematic study of several candidate materials in contact with the Si surface. We employ density-functional theory calculations to address the thermodynamic stability and magnetism of both pseudomorphic CsCl-like $M$Si ($M$=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) thin films and Heusler alloy $M_2$MnSi ($M$=Fe, Co, Ni) films on Si(001). Our calculations show that Si-termination of the $M$Si…
Topologically protected chiral skyrmion is an intriguing spin texture, which has attracted much attention because of fundamental research and future spintronic applications. MnSi with the non-centrosymmetric structure is well-known material hosting skyrmion phase. To date, preparation of MnSi crystals has been investigated by using special instruments with ultrahigh vacuum chamber. Here, we introduce a facile way to grow MnSi films on sapphire, which is in relatively low vacuum environment of conventional magnetron sputtering. Magnetotransport properties including Hall resistivity measurements…
We investigated the structure-property relationship of Co$_2$MnSi Heusler thin films upon the irradiation with He$^+$ ions. The variation of the crystal structure with increasing ion fluence has been probed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and associated with the corresponding changes of the magnetic behavior. A decrease of both the structural order and the moment in saturation is observed. Specifically, we detect a direct transition from a highly $L2_1$-ordered to a fully $A2$-disordered structure type and quantify the evolution of the $A2$ st…
The influence of antisite disorder occupancies on the magnetic properties of the half-metallic Co$_2$MnSi compound was studied by experimental techniques and first-principles calculations. The neutron diffraction studies show almost identical amount of Mn and Co disorders of 6.5\% and 7.6\%, which was found to be in good agreement with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the stable Co$_2$MnSi system with the corresponding disorders. DFT studies reveal that antiferromagnetic interactions introduced by Mn disorder lead to a reduction of the net magnetic moment. The results are discus…
Magneto-transport properties have been investigated for epitaxial thin films of B20-type MnSi grown on Si(111) substrates. Both Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and topological Hall effect (THE) clearly point to the robust formation of skyrmions over a wide temperature-magnetic field region. New features distinct from those of bulk MnSi are observed for epitaxial MnSi films: a shorter (nearly half) period of the spin helix and skyrmions, and an opposite sign of THE. These observations suggest versatile features of skyrmion-induced THE beyond the current understanding.
The half-metallic Heusler compound Co$_2$MnSi is a very attractive material for spintronic devices because it exhibits very high tunnelling magnetoresistance ratios. This work reports on a spectroscopic investigation of thin Co$_2$MnSi films as they are used as electrodes in magnetic tunnel junctions. The investigated films exhibit a remanent in-plane magnetisation with a magnetic moment of about 5~$μ_B$ when saturated, as expected. The low coercive field of only 4~mT indicates soft magnetic behaviour. Magnetic dichroism in emission and absorption was measured at the Co and Mn $2p$ core levels…
We report grazing incidence small angle neutron scattering (GISANS) and complementary off-specular neutron reflectometry (OSR) of the magnetic order in a single-crystalline epitaxial MnSi film on Si(111) in the thick film limit. Providing a means of direct reciprocal space mapping, GISANS and OSR reveal a magnetic modulation perpendicular to the films under magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the film, where additional polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) and magnetization measurements are in excellent agreement with the literature. Regardless of field orientation, our data does not…
The evolution of the magnetic and charge transport properties of itinerant magnetic metal MnSi with the substitution of Al and Ga on the Si site is investigated. We observe an increase in unit cell volume indicating that both Al and Ga substitutions create negative chemical pressure. There are substantial increases in the Curie temperature and the ordered moment demonstrating that the substitutions give the magnetism a more local character. The substitutions also increase the range of temperature and field where the skyrmion phase is stable due to a change in the character of the magnetism. In…
MnGe has been grown as a thin film on Si(111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. A 10 Å layer of MnSi was used as seedlayer in order to establish the B20 crystal structure. Films of a thickness between 45 and 135 Å have been prepared and structually characterized by RHEED, AFM and XRD. These techniques give evidence that MnGe forms in the cubic B20 crystal structure as islands exhibiting a very smooth surface. The islands become larger with increasing film thickness. A magnetic characterization reveals that the ordering temperature of MnGe thin films is enhanced compared to bulk material. T…
We have developed a sensitive technique to probe the magnetic skyrmion phases and dynamics by employing the interfacial coupling effect in a magnetoelectric composite configuration. The study on a MnSi single crystal sample using this technique provides clear evidences for the skyrmion lattice phase and coexistence of skyrmion and conical phase. Above the Curie temperature TC, a region with strong spin fluctuation is revealed as well. By tuning the density of Skyrmion or disorder, a transition from the skyrmion lattice to skyrmion-conical coexisting phase is observed. The observation is in goo…
In this paper, the Curie temperature of ferroelectric films is studied using spin-1/2 transverse Ising model with long-range interaction within the framework of the effective-field theory. The dependence of the Curie temperature on the thickness of the film, the surface interaction and the transverse field were investigated. It is assumed that the long-range interaction decays with the distance between the pseudo-spins as a power law. The dependence of the Curie temperature and the critical transverse field on the long-range exponent are obtained.
The structural and magnetic properties of Mn5Ge3Cx films prepared at elevated substrate temperatures TS are investigated. In particular, films with x >= 0.5 and TS = 680 K exhibit a strongly enhanced Curie temperature TC = 440 K compared to Mn5Ge3 with TC = 304 K. Structural analysis of these films suggests that the carbon is interstitially incorporated into the voids of Mn octahedra of the hexagonal Mn5Si3-type structure giving rise to a lattice compression. The enhanced ferromagnetic stability in connection with the lattice compression is interpreted in terms of an Mn-Mn interaction mediated…
Al1-xCrxN thin films with $0.02\le x \le 0.1$ were deposited by reactive co-sputtering onto c-plane (001) sapphire. Room-temperature ferromagnetism with a coercive field of 85 Oe was observed in samples with chromium contents as low as x = 0.027 (2.7%). With increasing Cr content the mean magnetic moment is strongly suppressed, with a maximum saturation moment of 0.62 and 0.71 $μ_B$ per Cr atom at 300 and 50 K respectively. We show that the Curie temperature of Al1-xCrxN for x = 0.027 is greater than 900 K.
We report a clear correspondence between changes in the Curie temperature and carrier density upon annealing in epitaxially grown (Ga,Mn)As layers with thicknesses in the range between 5 nm and 20 nm. The changes are dependent on the layer thickness, indicating that the (Ga,Mn)As - GaAs interface has importance for the physical properties of the (Ga,Mn)As layer. The magnetoresistance shows additional features when compared to thick (Ga,Mn)As layers, that are at present of unknown origin.
Materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) effect with high Curie temperature ($T_C$) is essential in applications. In this work, $Cr_2Te_3$ thin films showing PMA with $T_C$ ranging from 165 K to 295 K were successfully grown on $Al_2O_3$ by the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) technique. The structural analysis, magneto-transport and magnetic characterizations were conducted to study the physical origin of the improved $T_C$. In particular, ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering competition were investigated. A phenomenological model based on the coupling degree betw…
We report on the study of the structural, magnetic and transport properties of highly textured MnBi films with the Curie temperature of 628K. In addition to detailed measurements of resistivity and magnetization, we measure transport spin polarization of MnBi by Andreev reflection spectroscopy and perform fully relativistic band structure calculations of MnBi. A spin polarization from 51\pm1 to 63\pm1% is observed, consistent with the calculations and with an observation of a large magnetoresistance in MnBi contacts. The band structure calculations indicate that, in spite of almost identical d…
We present the magnetotransport properties of very thin (5 to 15 nm) single (Ga,Mn)As layers grown by low temperature molecular beam epitaxy. A lower (Ga,Mn)As thickness limit of 5 nm for the ferromagnetic phase and the dependence of the Curie temperature on (Ga,Mn)As thickness are determined from electrical transport measurements. The Curie temperature is determined to be 97 K for the thinnest ferromagnetic sample and is found to decrease for increasing layer thickness. A carrier density of ~7.1$\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ for the 5 nm thick (Ga,Mn)As layer is determined from Hall measurements. …
Diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMSs) based on group-IV materials are desirable for spintronic devices compatible with current silicon technology. In this work, amorphous Mn-doped SiGe thin films were first fabricated on Ge substrates by radio frequency magnetron sputtering and then crystallized by rapid thermal annealing (RTA). After the RTA, the samples became ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductors, in which the Curie temperature increased with increasing Mn doping concentration and reached 280 K with 5% Mn concentration. The data suggest that the ferromagnetism came from the hole-mediated proce…
We have prepared the dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) InMnAs with different Mn concentrations by ion implantation and pulsed laser melting. The Curie temperature of the In1-xMnxAs epilayer depends on the Mn concentration x, reaching 82 K for x=0.105. The substitution of Mn ions at the Indium sites induces a compressive strain perpendicular to the InMnAs layer and a tensile strain along the in-plane direction. This gives rise to a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which is often needed for the demonstration of electrical control of magnetization and for spin-transfer-torque induced ma…
Recently, the observation of atomic thin film SnTe with a Curie temperature (Tc) higher than that of the bulk (Chang et. al., Science 353, 274 (2016)) has boosted the research on two-dimensional (2D) ferroic materials tremendously. However, the origin of such phenomenon has yet been thoroughly investigated, which hinder the understanding and design of novel materials with ferroic orders at 2D limit. By using the density functional theory, we investigated the structural and ferroelectrical properties of 2D SnTe, to reveal the thickness dependence. The calculated results demonstrate that the 2D …
We report the temperature dependent capacitance-voltage characteristics of Pt/SrTiO3 Schottky diodes fabricated using compressively strained SrTiO3 thin films grown on (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7 (LSAT) substrates. The measurements reveal a divergence of the out of plane dielectric constant of SrTiO3 peaked at ~140K, implying a ferroelectric transition. A Curie-Weiss law fit to the zero-bias dielectric constant suggests a Curie temperature of ~56 K. This observation provides experimental confirmation of the theoretical prediction of out of plane ferroelectricity in compressively strained SrTiO3 …
Within the framework of mean field theory, we study the effects of multi-surface modification on Curie temperature of ferroelectric films using the transverse Ising model. The general nonlinear equations for Curie temperature of multi-surface ferroelectric films with arbitrary exchange constants and transverse fields are derived by the transfer matrix method. As an example, we consider a film consisting of top surface layers, bulk layers and bottom surface layers. Two types of surface modifications, modifications of a surface exchange constant and a surface transverse field are taken into acco…
Nanoscale layered ferromagnets have demonstrated fascinating two-dimensional magnetism down to atomic layers, providing a peculiar playground of spin orders for investigating fundamental physics and spintronic applications. However, strategy for growing films with designed magnetic properties is not well established yet. Herein, we present a versatile method to control the Curie temperature (T_{C}) and magnetic anisotropy during growth of ultrathin Cr_{2}Te_{3} films. We demonstrate increase of the TC from 165 K to 310 K in sync with magnetic anisotropy switching from an out-of-plane orientati…
We present high-temperature ferromagnetism and large magnetic anisotropy in heavily Fe-doped n-type ferromagnetic semiconductor (In1-x,Fex)Sb (x = 20 - 35%) thin films grown by low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy. The (In1-x,Fex)Sb thin films with x = 20 - 35% maintain the zinc-blende crystal and band structure with single-phase ferromagnetism. The Curie temperature (TC) of (In1-x,Fex)Sb reaches 390 K at x = 35%, which is significantly higher than room temperature and the highest value so far reported in III-V based ferromagnetic semiconductors. Moreover, large coercive force (HC = 160 Oe) …
Ferromagnetic properties of In1-xMnxAs thin films were investigated. Room temperature ferromagnetic order was observed in nominally single-phase films with x = 0.01-0.10. Magnetization measurements indicated that these In1-xMnxAs samples had a Curie temperature of 333 K. The Curie temperature was independent of Mn concentration. The temperature dependent magnetization along with the magnitude of the saturation magnetization and microstructural data indicate that the source of the high-temperature ferromagnetism in single-phase films is not attributable to MnAs nanoprecipitates. The high transi…
When comparing a set of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) samples, the Curie temperature (TC) of the samples is an important figure of merit for the sample quality. Therefore, a reliable method to determine TC is required. Here, a method based on the analysis of the magnetization loops is proposed.
We report the discovery of a new spin glass ground state in the transition metal monosilicides with the B20 crystallographic structure. Magnetic, transport, neutron and muon investigation of the solid solution Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si have revealed a new dome in the phase diagram with evidence of antiferromagnetic interactions. For Mn rich compounds, a sharp decrease of the Curie temperature is observed upon Co doping and neutron elastic scattering shows that helimagnetic order of MnSi persists up to $x=0.05$ with a shortening of the helix period. For higher Co ($0.05<x<0.90$) concentrations, the …
We have recently observed a giant electrocaloric effect (12 K in 25 V) in 350 nm sol-gel Pb Zr_0.95 Ti_0.05 O_3 films near the ferroelectric Curie temperature of 242oC. Here we demonstrate a giant electrocaloric effect (5 K in 25 V) in 260 nm sol-gel films of the relaxor ferroelectric 0.9 PbMg_(1/3)Nb_(2/3)O_3 - 0.1 PbTiO_3 near the Curie temperature of 60oC. This reduction in operating temperature widens the potential for applications in novel cooling systems.
We demonstrate that low concentrations of a secondary magnetic phase in (Ga,Mn)As thin films can enhance the coercivity by factors up to ~100 without significantly degrading the Curie temperature or saturation magnetisation. Magnetic measurements indicate that the secondary phase consists of MnAs nanoclusters, of average size ~7nm. This approach to controlling the coercivity while maintaining high Curie temperature, may be important for realizing ferromagnetic semiconductor based devices.
Future spintronics requires the realization of thin film of half-metallic ferromagnets having high Curie temperature and 100\% spin polarization at the Fermi level for potential spintronics applications. In this paper, we report the epitaxial thin films growth of half-metallic CoFeMnGe Heusler alloy on MgO (001) substrate using pulsed laser deposition system, along with the study of structural, magnetic and transport properties. The magnetic property measurements of the thin film suggest a soft ferromagnetic state at room temperature with an in-plane magnetic anisotropy and a Curie temperature…
We report switching of magnetic anisotropy (MA) from in-plane to perpendicular with increasing the thickness d of a (001)-oriented ferromagnetic-semiconductor (FMS) (Ga0.7,Fe0.3)Sb layer with a high Curie temperature (Tc > 320 K), using ferromagnetic resonance at room temperature. We show that the total MA energy (E) along the [001] direction changes its sign from positive (in-plane) to negative (perpendicular) with increasing d above an effective critical value \mathrm{d}_\mathrm{C}^\mathrm{*}\ ~ 42 nm. We reveal that (Ga,Fe)Sb has two-fold symmetry in the film plane. Meanwhile, in the plane …
We report on the first experimental visualization of domain structure in films of weakly ferromagnetic Cu$_{0,47}$Ni$_{0,53}$ alloy with different thickness at liquid helium temperatures. Improved high-resolution Bitter decoration technique was used to map the magnetic contrast on the top of the films well below the Curie temperature T$_{Curie}$ ($\sim$ 60 K). In contrast to magnetic force microscopy, this technique allowed visualization of the domain structure without its disturbance while the larger areas of the sample were probed. Maze-like domain patterns, typical for perpendicular magneti…
Transport, magnetic, magneto-optical (Kerr effect) and optical (light absorption) properties have been studied in an oriented polycrystalline La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_{3} film which shows colossal magneto-resistance. The correlations between these properties are presented. A giant change in IR light transmission (more than a 1000-fold decrease) is observed on crossing the Curie temperature (about 270 K) from high to low temperature. Large changes in transmittance in a magnetic field were observed as well. The giant changes in transmittance and the large magneto-transmittance can be used for devel…
Although we seriously disagree with many of the points raised in the comment by Edmonds et al., we feel that it is valuable and timely, since comparison of this comment and our paper serves to underscore an important property of the ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As in thin film form.
Heavily-alloyed, 100 nm Ga1-xMnxAs (x>0.1) films are obtained via low temperature molecular beam epitaxy utilizing a combinatorial technique which allows systematic control of excess arsenic during growth. Reproducible, optimized electronic, magnetic and structural properties are found in a narrow range of stoichiometric growth conditions. The Curie temperature of stoichiometric material is 150-165 K and independent of x within a large window of growth conditions while substitutional Mn content increases linearly, contradicting the prediction of the Zener Model of hole-mediated ferromagnetism.
A sharp distinction between magnetoresistance (MR) behavior for the magnetic fields applied perpendicular (H_{perp}) and parallel (H_{par}) to the film plane is found in colossal-magnetoresistance film La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} (x \approx 3). At increasing of H_{perp} the MR is first negative (at H_{perp} < 4 kOe), then positive (4 kOe < H_{perp} < 12 kOe), and then negative again (H_{perp} > 12 kOe). At increasing of H_{par} the MR is positive below H_{par} \simeq 6 kOe and negative above it. In both cases the magnetic field was perpendicular to the current. The anisotropic behavior of this kind …
We show that by annealing Ga1-xMnxAs thin films at temperatures significantly lower than in previous studies, and monitoring the resistivity during growth, an unprecedented high Curie temperature Tc and conductivity can be obtained. Tc is unambiguously determined to be 118 K for Mn concentration x=0.05, 140 K for x=0.06, and 120 K for x=0.08. We also identify a clear correlation between Tc and the room temperature conductivity. The results indicate that Curie temperatures significantly in excess of the current values are achievable with improvements in growth and post-growth annealing conditio…
We report on an enhancement of the Curie temperature in GaMnAs/InGaMnAs superlattices grown by low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy, which is due to thin InGaMnAs or InGaAs films embedded into the GaMnAs layers. The pronounced increase of the Curie temperature is strongly correlated to the In concentration in the embedded layers. Curie temperatures up to 110 K are observed in such structures compared to 60 K in GaMnAs single layers grown under the same conditions. A further increase in T$_C$ up to 130 K can be achieved using post-growth annealing at temperatures near the growth temperature. …
We have used low energy implanted muons as a volume sensitive probe of the magnetic properties of EuO_{1-x} thin films. We find that static and homogeneous magnetic order persists up to the elevated T_C in the doped samples and the muon signal displays the double dome feature also observed in the sample magnetization. Our results appear incompatible with either the magnetic phase separation or bound magnetic polaron descriptions previously suggested to explain the elevated T_C, but are compatible with an RKKY-like interaction mediating magnetic interactions above 69 K.
Mn_5Ge_3C_x films with x>0.5 were experimentally shown to exhibit a strongly enhanced Curie temperature T_C compared to Mn_5Ge_3. In this letter we present the results of our first principles calculations within Green's function approach, focusing on the effect of carbon doping on the electronic and magnetic properties of the Mn_5Ge_3. The calculated exchange coupling constants revealed an enhancement of the ferromagnetic Mn-Mn interactions mediated by carbon. The essentially increased T_C in Mn_5Ge_3C is well reproduced in our Monte Carlo simulations and together with the decrease of the tota…
(Ga,Mn)As and related diluted magnetic semiconductors play a major role in spintronics research because of their potential to combine ferromagnetism and semiconducting properties in one physical system. Ferromagnetism requires ~1-10% of substitutional Mn_Ga. Unintentional defects formed during growth at these high dopings significantly suppress the Curie temperature. We present experiments in which by etching the (Ga,Mn)As surface oxide we achieve a dramatic reduction of annealing times necessary to optimize the ferromagnetic film after growth, and report Curie temperature of 180 K at approxim…
We have studied magnetic properties of heavily Mn-doped [(In0.44Ga0.56)0.79Mn0.21]As thin films grown by low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy (LT-MBE) on InP substrates. The (InGaMn)As with high Mn content (21%) was obtained by decreasing the growth temperature to 190 degC. When the thickness of the [(In0.44Ga0.56)0.79Mn0.21]As layer is equal or thinner than 10 nm, the reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) pattern and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show no MnAs clustering, indicating that a homogeneous single crystal with good quality was grown. In the magnetic circular…
We report the evolution of magnetic moment as well as magnetic anisotropy with crystalline order in Co$_2$MnSi thin films grown on $(100)$ MgO by pulsed laser deposition. The films become more ordered as the annealing temperature ($T_A$) increases from 400 to 600 $^0$C. The extent of \emph{L}$2_1$ ordering in the films annealed at 600 $^0$C is $\approx 96%$. The static magnetization measurements by vibrating sample magnetometry shows a maximum moment of 4.95 $μ_B$ per formula unit with low coercivity ($H_C$ $\approx$ 65 Oe) in the films annealed at 600 $^0$C. A rigorous analysis of the azimuth…
The Curie temperature TC is investigated as a function of the hole concentration p in thin films of ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. The magnetic properties are probed by transport measurements and p is varied by the application of an external electric field in a field-effect transistor configuration. It is found that TC is proportional to p^γ, where the exponent γ= 0.19 \pm 0.02 over a wide range of Mn compositions and channel thicknesses. The magnitude of gamma is reproduced by a p-d Zener model taking into account nonuniform hole distribution along the growth direction, determined by …
Annealing can increase the Curie temperature and net magnetization in uncapped (Ga,Mn)As films, effects that are suppressed when the films are capped with GaAs. Previous polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) studies of uncapped (Ga,Mn)As revealed a pronounced magnetization gradient that was reduced after annealing. We have extended this study to (Ga,Mn)As capped with GaAs. We observe no increase in Curie temperature or net magnetization upon annealing. Furthermore, PNR measurements indicate that annealing produces minimal differences in the depth-dependent magnetization, as both as-grown and a…
The effects of Gd doping and O vacancies on the magnetic interaction and Curie temperature of EuO are studied using first-principles calculations. Linear response calculations in the virtual crystal approximation show a broad maximum in the Curie temperature as a function of doping, which results from the combination of the saturating contribution from indirect exchange and a decreasing contribution from the f-d hopping mechanism. Non-Heisenberg interaction at low doping levels and its effect on the Curie temperature are examined. The electronic structure of a substitutional Gd and of an O vac…
We report bcc-like crystal structures in 2-4 ML Fe films grown on fcc Cu(100) using scanning tunneling microscopy. The local bcc structure provides a straightforward explanation for their frequently reported outstanding magnetic properties, i.e., ferromagnetic ordering in all layers with a Curie temperature above 300 K. The non-pseudomorphic structure, which becomes pseudomorphic above 4 ML film thickness is unexpected in terms of conventional rules of thin film growth and stresses the importance of finite thickness effects in ferromagnetic ultrathin films.
Ferromagnetic insulators play a crucial role in the development of low-dissipation quantum magnetic devices for spintronics. Epitaxial LaCoO3 thin film is a prominent ferromagnetic insulator, in which the robust ferromagnetic ordering emerges owing to epitaxial strain. Whereas it is evident that strong spin-lattice coupling induces ferromagnetism, the reported ferromagnetic properties of epitaxially strained LaCoO3 thin films were highly consistent. For example, even under largely modulated degree of strain, the reported Curie temperatures of epitaxially strained LaCoO3 thin films lie within 8…
The influence of epitaxial strain on uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of Co$_{2}$FeSi (CFS) and Co$_{2}$MnSi (CMS) Heusler alloy thin films grown on (001) SrTiO$_3$ (STO) and MgO is reported. The in-plane biaxial strain is susceptible to tune by varying the thickness of the films on STO, while on MgO the films show in-plane easy axis for magnetization (\overrightarrow{M}) irrespective of their thickness. A variational analysis of magnetic free energy functional within the Stoner-Wohlfarth coherent rotation model with out-of-plane uniaxial anisotropy for the films on STO showed the presence of magn…
Wurtzite (Ga,Mn)N films showing ferromagnetic behaviour at room temperature were successfully grown on sapphire(0001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy using ammonia as nitrogen source. Magnetization measurements were carried out by a superconducting quantum interference device at the temperatures between 1.8K and 300K with magnetic field applied parallel to the film plane up to 7T. The magnetic-field dependence of magnetization of a (Ga,Mn)N film at 300K were ferromagnetic, while a GaN film showed Pauli paramagnetism like behaviour. The Curie temperatures of a (Ga,Mn)N film was estimated a…
