We calculate the quantum Lyapunov exponent $λ_L$ and butterfly velocity $v_B$ in the dilute Bose gas at temperature $T$ deep in the Bose-Einstein condensation phase. The generalized Boltzmann equation approach is used for calculating out-of-time ordered correlators, from which $λ_L$ and $v_B$ are extracted. At very low temperature where elementary excitations are phonon-like, we find $λ_L\propto T^5$ and $v_B\sim c$, the sound velocity. At relatively high temperature, we have $λ_L\propto T$ and $v_B\sim c(T/T_*)^{0.23}$. We find $λ_L$ is always comparable to the damping rate of a quasiparticle, whose energy depends suitably on $T$. The chaos diffusion constant $D_L=v_B^2/λ_L$, on the other hand, differs from the energy diffusion constant $D_E$. We find $D_E\ll D_L$ at very low temperature and $D_E\gg D_L$ otherwise.
We review recent work on a kinetic model for very low temperature dilute Bose gases. The brief derivation, expressions for hydrodynamics modes, and the comparison with a experiment on a BEC of $^{87}{\rm Rb}$ atoms are presented.
The thermodynamic and superfluid properties of the dilute two-dimensional binary Bose mixture at low temperatures are discussed. We also considered the problem of the emergence of the long-range order in these systems. All calculations are performed by means of celebrated Popov's path-integral approach for the Bose gas with a short-range interparticle potential.
The exact relations for strongly interacting Fermi gasses, recently derived by Tan, are shown to first order in the loop expansion to also apply to dilute Bose gasses. A simple thermodynamic argument is put forward to support their validity. As an application, the second-order correction to the depletion of the condensate is determined to logarithmic accuracy.
The properties of a dilute Bose gas with the non-Gaussian quenched disorder are analysed. Being more specific we have considered a system of bosons immersed in the classical bath consisting of the non-interacting particles with infinite mass. Making use of perturbation theory up to second order we have studied the impact of environment on the ground-state thermodynamic and superfluid characteristics of the Bose component.
We study the Bardeen-Cooper-Shrieffer (BCS) pairing state of a two-component Bose gas with a symmetric spin-orbit coupling. In the dilute limit at low temperatures, this system is essentially a dilute gas of diatomic molecules. We compute the effective mass of the molecule and find that it is anisotropic in momentum space. The critical temperature of the pairing state is about eight times smaller than the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) transition temperature of an ideal Bose gas with the same density.
Using Boltzmann's equation, we study the effect of three-body losses on the momentum distribution of a homogeneous unitary Bose gas in the dilute limit where quantum correlations are negligible. We calculate the momentum distribution of the gas and show that inelastic collisions are quantitatively as important as a second order virial correction.
We revisit the problem of the calculation of low-temperature properties for the dilute two-dimensional Bose gas. By using Popov's hydrodynamic approach and perturbation theory on the one-loop level we recover not only the known expansion for the ground-state energy but also calculate for the first time the condensate density and Tan's contact.
Landau was the first to advance hydrodynamic concepts such as density and velocity to describe the superfluidity of liquid He$^4$. Due to the recent spectacular success of experiments demonstrating Bose Einstein condensation in dilute Bose atomic gases, interest has been revitalized in the theoretical description of Bose Einstein condensates. Many of the properties of these gases were obtained by using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) to derive the hydrodynamic equations for the gases. However, it is interesting to apply the hydrodynamic equations obtained by Yee for bosons. Many of the pro…
We study the properties of an impurity immersed in a weakly interacting Bose gas, i.e., of a Bose polaron. In the perturbatively-tractable of limit weak impurity-boson interactions many of its properties are known to depend only on the scattering length. Here we demonstrate that for strong (unitary) impurity-boson interactions all static quasiproperties of a Bose polaron in a dilute Bose gas, such as its energy, its residue, its Tan's contact and the number of bosons trapped nearby the impurity, depend on the impurity-boson potential via a single parameter.
Motivated by the recent experiment [R. Lopes et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 190404 (2017)] with a homogeneous Bose gas, we investigate a homogeneous dilute Bose gas to calculate the quantum depletion density. By means of the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action approach within an improved Hartree-Fock approximation, the condensed fraction is recovered in a simpler manner and compared with corresponding findings in experimental data. Additionally, higher-order terms are taken into account for several physical quantities, in particular for the chemical potential and free energy density.
Experimental advances in synthesizing spin-orbit couplings in cold atomic Bose gases promise to create single-particle dispersion laws featuring energy minima that are degenerate on a ring or a sphere in momentum space. We show that for arbitrary space dimensionality the ground-state properties of a dilute system of spin-orbit coupled Bose particles with such dispersion and short-range repulsive interactions are universal: the chemical potential exhibits a quadratic dependence on the particle density as found in a one-dimensional free Fermi gas.
In a manner of Cornwal-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action approach, the density of condensate of a dilute Bose gas confined between two planar walls is investigated within the framework of improved Hartree-Fock. Thereby, the quantum fluctuations are taken into account with presence of high-order terms in the momentum integrals. Our results show that the quantum fluctuations significantly belittle the density of condensate compared with square of the expectation value of the field operator. The comparison with relating results of Gross-Pitaevskii theory is made.
Ultra-cold atomic gases provide new chance to study the universal critical behavior of phase transition. We study theoretically the matter wave interference for ultra-cold Bose gases in the critical regime. We demonstrate that the interference in the momentum distribution can be used to extract the correlation in the Bose gas. A simple relation between the interference visibility and the correlation length is found and used to interpret the pioneering experiment about the critical behavior of dilute Bose gases [Science {\bf 315}, 1556 (2007)]. Our theory paves the way to experimentally study v…
The properties of impurity immersed in the dilute $D$-dimensional Bose gas at temperatures close to the second-order phase transition point are considered. Particularly by means of the $1/N$-expansion we calculated the leading-order polaron energy and the damping rate in the limit of vanishing boson-boson interaction. It is show that the perturbative effective mass and the quasiparticle residue diverge logarithmically in the long-length limit signalling the non-analytic behavior of impurity spectrum and a non-pole structure of a polaron Green's function in the infrared region, respectively.
The properties of a Bose polaron immersed in a dilute two-dimensional medium at finite temperatures are discussed. Assuming that the impurity is weakly-coupled to the bath particles we have perturbatively calculated the polaron energy, effective mass, quasiparticle residue and damping rate. The parameters of impurity spectrum are found to be well-defined in the whole temperature region whereas the pole structure of the impurity Green's function is visible only at absolute zero. At any finite temperatures the quasiparticle residue is logarithmically divergent signalling of the branch-cut behavi…
We determined perturbatively the low-energy universal thermodynamics of dilute one-dimensional bosons with the three-body repulsive forces. The final results are presented for the limit of vanishing potential range in terms of three-particle scattering length. An analogue of Tan`s energy theorem for considered system is derived in generic case without assuming weakness of the interparticle interaction. We also obtained an exact identity relating the three-body contact to the energy density.
Recently a quantum portrait of black holes was suggested according to which a macroscopic black hole is a Bose-Einstein condensate of soft gravitons stuck at the critical point of a quantum phase transition. We explain why quantum criticality and instability are the key for efficient generation of entanglement and consequently of the scrambling of information. By studying a simple Bose-Einstein prototype, we show that the scrambling time, which is set by the quantum break time of the system, goes as $\log N \,$ for $N$ the number of quantum constituents or equivalently the black hole entropy.
We comment on J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 91, 024001 (2022) by Masaki-Kato et al. and show that their results are in very good agreement with the semi-classical spin-wave approximation of Bose-Hubbard model in the hardcore limit. This allows for recovering the analytical formulae for both the s-wave scattering length and the Lee-Huang-Yang correction.
The Casimir effect in a dilute Bose gas confined between two planar walls is investigated in the canonical ensemble at zero temperature by means of Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action approach within the improved Hartree-Fock approximation. Our results show that: (i) the Casimir energy and the resulting Casimir force in the canonical ensemble remarkably differ from those in the grand canonical ensemble; (ii) when the distance between two planar walls increases, the Casimir energy and Casimir force decay in accordance with a half-integer power law in the canonical ensemble instead of an …
We compute the Tan's contact of a weakly interacting Bose gas at zero temperature in a cigar-shaped configuration. Using an effective one-dimensional Gross-Pitaeskii equation and Bogoliubov theory, we derive an analytical formula that interpolates between the three-dimensional and the one-dimensional mean-field regimes. In the strictly one-dimensional limit, we compare our results with Lieb-Liniger theory. Our study can be a guide for actual experiments interested in the study of Tan's contact in the dimensional crossover.
We study the splitting of multiply quantized vortices with large quantum numbers in dilute nonrotated Bose-Einstein condensates in the zero-temperature limit. The splitting is observed to result in vortex-free condensate fragments which are separated by vortex sheets. The number of these fragments is found to be equal to the angular-momentum quantum number of the Bogoliubov excitation mode responsible for the splitting, although the formulation of the fragments cannot be described by small-amplitude excitations. Thus, the realization of an isolated giant vortex and the observation of its split…
Recently, Freilich et al. [Science 329, 1182 (2010)] experimentally discovered stationary states of vortex dipoles, pairs of vortices of opposite circulation, in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates. To explain their observations, we perform simulations based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and obtain excellent quantitative agreement on the size of the stationary dipole. We also investigate how their imaging method, in which atoms are repeatedly extracted from a single condensate, affects the vortex dynamics. We find that it mainly induces isotropic size oscillations of the condensate without oth…
We investigate the spectral function of the Higgs mode in a two dimensional Bose gas, by using the effective field theory in the zero temperature limit. Our approach explains the experimental feature that the peak of the spectral function is a soft continuum rather than a sharp peak, broadened and vanishing in the superfluid phase, which cannot be explained in terms of the $O(2)$ model. We also find that the scalar susceptibility is the same as the longitudinal susceptibility.
We investigate an ultracold and dilute Bose gas by taking into account a finite-range two-body interaction. The coupling constants of the resulting Lagrangian density are related to measurable scattering parameters by following the effective-field-theory approach. A perturbative scheme is then developed up to the Gaussian level, where both quantum and thermal fluctuations are crucially affected by finite-range corrections. In particular, the relation between spontaneous symmetry breaking and the onset of superfluidity is emphasized by recovering the renowned Landau's equation for the superflui…
A Bose gas subject to a light-induced Rashba spin-orbit coupling possesses a dispersion minimum on a circle in momentum space; we show that kinematic constraints due to this dispersion cause interactions to renormalize to universal, angle-dependent values that govern the phase structure in the dilute-gas limit. We find that, regardless of microscopic interactions, (a) the ground state involves condensation at two opposite momenta, and is, in finite systems, a fragmented condensate; and (b) there is a nonzero-temperature instability toward the condensation of pairs of bosons. We discuss how our…
The energy spectrum for the three dimensional Bose gas in Bose-Einstein Condensation phase is calculated with Modified Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory, which is both conserving and gapless. From Improved $Φ-$% derivable theory, the diagrams needed to preserve Ward-Takahashi Identity are resummed in a systematic and nonperturbative way. The results show significant discrepancies with Popov theory at finite temperature. It is valid up to the critical temperature where the dispersion relation of the low energy excitation spectrum changes from linear to quadratic. Because of the repulsive interacti…
We demonstrate that the precessional frequencies of vortices in Bose Einstein condensates (BECs) are determined by a conservation law, and not by the lowest lying excitation energy mode. We determine the precessional frequency for a single off-axis vortex and vortex lattices in BECs using the continuity equation, and solve this self-consistently with the time-independent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equations in the rotating frame. We find agreement with zero temperature calculations (Bogoliubov approximation), and a smooth variation in the precession frequency as the temperature is increased…
An impurity in a Bose gas is commonly referred to as Bose polaron. For a dilute Bose gas its properties are expected to be universal, that is dependent only on a few parameters characterizing the boson-impurity interactions. When boson-impurity interactions are weak, it has been known for some time that the properties of the polaron depend only on the scattering length of these interactions. In this paper which accompanies and extends Ref. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 123403 (2021)] (where some of these results have already been reported) we examine stronger boson-impurity interactions, keeping thei…
Motivated by a recent demonstration of cyclic addition of quantized vorticity into a Bose-Einstein condensate, the vortex pump, we study dynamical instabilities and core sizes of giant vortices. The core size is found to increase roughly as a square-root function of the quantum number of the vortex, whereas the strength of the dynamical instability either saturates to a fairly low value or increases extremely slowly for large quantum numbers. Our studies suggest that giant vortices of very high angular momenta may be achieved by gradually increasing the operation frequency of the vortex pump.
We study the stability of the dilute Bose-Fermi and Bose-Bose mixtures with repulsive interactions in one and two dimensions in terms of the renormalization group. For the Bose-Fermi mixture, we show that the uniform mixture is stable against de-mixing in the dilute limit. For the Bose-Bose mixture, we give the stability conditions in the dilute limit. As a byproduct, we also calculate the critical temperature for the superfluid phase of the two-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture in the extremely dilute limit.
We theoretically investigate first and second sound of a two-dimensional (2D) atomic Bose gas in harmonic traps by solving Landau's two-fluid hydrodynamic equations. For an isotropic trap, we find that first and second sound modes become degenerate at certain temperatures and exhibit typical avoided crossings in mode frequencies. At these temperatures, second sound has significant density fluctuation due to its hybridization with first sound and has a divergent mode frequency towards the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. For a highly anisotropic trap, we derive the simplified o…
Recently, it was shown that giant vortices with arbitrarily large quantum numbers can possibly be created in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates by cyclically pumping vorticity into the condensate. However, multiply quantized vortices are typically dynamically unstable in harmonically trapped nonrotated condensates, which poses a serious challenge to the vortex pump procedure. In this theoretical study, we investigate how the giant vortices can be stabilized by the application of a Gaussian potential peak along the vortex core. We find that achieving dynamical stability is feasible up to high qua…
We investigate experimentally the dynamical relaxation of a non-integrable quantum many-body system to its equilibrium state. A Bose-Einstein condensate is loaded into the first excited band of an optical lattice and let to evolve up to a few hundreds of milliseconds. Signs of quantum equilibration are observed. There is a period of time, roughly 40 ms long, during which both the aspect ratio of the cloud and its momentum distribution remain constant. In particular, the momentum distribution has a flat top and is not a Gaussian thermal distribution. After this period, the cloud becomes classic…
We study dilute gases of interacting bosons at zero-temperature in the region where the system is characterized only by the s-wave scattering length. We carry out quantum Monte Carlo simulation of the Bose Hubbard model and a continuous-space hard-core model. Fitting the extended Lee-Huang-Yang formula to the Monte Carlo results establishes the detailed mapping from the lattice model to the continuous field theory characterized only by the s-wave scattering length. Our estimate of the intrinsic s-wave scattering length $a_s$ of the Bose-Hubbard model is $a_s/a_l = 0.316(2)$ where $a_l$ is the …
We study the thermodynamic properties of binary Bose mixtures, by developing a beyond mean-field Popov theory which properly includes the effects of quantum and thermal fluctuations in both the density and spin channels. Results for key thermodynamic quantities, such as the isothermal compressibility and the magnetic susceptibility, are derived from a perturbative calculation of the grand-canonical potential. We find that thermal fluctuations can play a crucial role on the miscibility condition of a binary mixture, favoring phase separation at finite temperature even if the mixture is soluble …
We develop a microscopic theory of sound damping due to Landau mechanism in dilute gas with Bose condensate. It is based on the coupled evolution equations of the parameters describing the system. These equations have been derived in earlier works within a microscopic approach which employs the Peletminskii-Yatsenko reduced description method for quantum many-particle systems and Bogoliubov model for a weakly nonideal Bose gas with a separated condensate. The dispersion equations for sound oscillations were obtained by linearization of the mentioned evolution equations in the collisionless app…
We rewrite the Lagrangian for a dilute Bose gas in terms of auxiliary fields related to the normal and anomalous condensate densities. We derive the loop expansion of the effective action in the composite-field propagators. The lowest-order auxiliary field (LOAF) theory is a conserving mean-field approximation consistent with the Goldstone theorem without some of the difficulties plaguing approximations such as the Hartree and Popov approximations. LOAF predicts a second-order phase transition. We give a set of Feynman rules for improving results to any order in the loop expansion in terms of …
We derive the Josephson relation for a dilute Bose gas in the framework of an auxiliary-field resummation of the theory in terms of the normal- and anomalous-density condensates. The mean-field phase diagram of this theory features two critical temperatures, T_c and $T^*, associated with the presence in the system of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and superfluid state, respectively. In this context, the Josephson relation shows that the superfluid density is related to a second order parameter, the square of the anomalous-density condensate. This is in contrast with the corresponding resul…
We propose a practical protocol to generate and observe a non-Abelian geometric phase using a periodically driven Raman process in the hyperfne ground state manifold of atoms in a dilute ultracold gas. Our analysis is based upon recent developments and application of Floquet theory to periodically driven quantum systems. The simulation results show the non-Abelian gauge transformation and the non-commuting property of the SU(2) transformation operators. Based on these results, we propose a possible experimental implementation with an ultracold dilute Bose gas.
I give a unified perspective on the properties of a variety of quantum liquids using the theory of quantum phase transitions. A central role is played by a zero density quantum critical point which is argued to control the properties of the dilute gas. An exact renormalization group analysis of such quantum critical points leads to a computation of the universal properties of the dilute Bose gas and the spinful Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance.
Following an earlier calculation in 3D, we calculate the 2D critical temperature of a dilute, translation-invariant Bose gas using a variational formulation of the Bogoliubov approximation introduced by Critchley and Solomon in 1976. This provides the first analytical calculation of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature that includes the constant in the logarithm.
We show a method to accelerate quantum adiabatic transport of identical spinless particles interacting with each other by developing the preceding fast-forward scaling theory formed for one-particle systems [Masuda and Nakamura, {\it Proc. R. Soc.} A {\bf 466}, 1135 (2010)]. We derive a driving potential which accelerates adiabatic dynamics of quantum systems composed of identical particles in order to obtain the final adiabatic states in any desired short time. We also exhibit an ideal rapid manipulation of dilute Bose gas in the ground state without energy excitation by using the fast-forwar…
We study a two-component Bose gas with a symmetric spin-orbit coupling, and find that two atoms can form a bound state with any intra- or inter-species scattering length. Consequently, in the dilute limit, the Bardeen-Cooper-Shrieffer (BCS) pairing state of bosons can be formed with weakly-attractive inter-species and repulsive intra-species interactions. The quasiparticle excitation energies are anisotropic due to spin-orbit coupling. This BCS paring state is energetically favored over Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of atoms at low densities. As the density increases, there is a first-order…
We compute the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute three-dimensional homogeneous Bose gases. Our method involves the models of spatial permutations and it should be exact to lowest order in the scattering length of the particle interactions. We find that the change in the critical temperature is proportional to a rho^{1/3} with constant c = -2.33; this contradicts the current consensus among physicists.
For a dilute system of non-relativistic bosons interacting through a positive $L^1$ potential $v$ with scattering length $a$ we prove that the ground state energy density satisfies the bound $e(ρ) \geq 4πa ρ^2 (1+ \frac{128}{15\sqrtπ} \sqrt{ρa^3} +o(\sqrt{ρa^3}\,))$, thereby proving the Lee-Huang-Yang formula for the energy density.
We study the lifetime of single-particle excitations in a dilute homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature based on a self-consistent perturbation expansion of satisfying Goldstone's theorem and conservation laws simultaneously. It is shown that every excitation for each momentum ${\bf p}$ should have a finite lifetime proportional to the inverse $a^{-1}$ of the $s$-wave scattering length $a$, instead of $a^{-2}$ for the normal state, due to a new class of Feynman diagrams for the self-energy that emerges upon condensation. We calculate the lifetime as a function of $|{\bf p}|$ a…
It has been proven theoretically for bosons with two-body repulsive interaction potentials in the dilute limit that the Gross-Pitaevskii equation provides the exact energy and density per particle as does the basic many-particle Schroedinger equation [Lieb and Seiringer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 170409 (2002)]. Here, we investigate the overlap of the Gross-Pitaevskii and exact ground state wavefunctions. It is found that this overlap is always smaller than unity and may even vanish in spite of the fact that both wavefunctions provide the same energy and density per particle. Consequences are discu…
We study experimentally and numerically the quasi-bidimensional transport of a $^{87}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensate launched with a velocity $v_0$ inside a disordered optical potential created by a speckle pattern. A time-of-flight analysis reveals a pronounced enhanced density peak in the backscattering direction $-v_0$, a feature reminiscent of coherent backscattering. Detailed numerical simulations indicate however that other effects also contribute to this enhancement, including a "backscattering echo" due to the position-momentum correlations of the initial wave packet.
We theoretically examine three-well interferometry in Bose-Einstein condensates using adiabatic passage. Specifically, we demonstrate that a fractional coherent transport adiabatic passage protocol enables stable spatial splitting in the presence of nonlinear interactions. A reversal of this protocol produces a coherent recombination of the BEC with a phase-dependent population of the three wells. The effect of nonlinear interactions on the interferometric measurement is quantified and found to lead to an enhancement in sensitivity for moderate interaction strengths.
We study the bosonic atoms with a wide Feshbach resonance at zero temperature in terms of the renormalization group. We indicate that this system will always collapse in the dilute limit. On the side with a positive scattering length, the atomic superfluid is an unstable local minimum in the dilute limit and it determines the thermodynamics of this system within its lifetime. We calculate the equilibrium properties at zero temperature in the unitary regime. They exhibit universal scaling forms in the dilute limit due to the presence of a nontrivial zero temperature, zero density fixed point. M…
We show that a composite-field (diatom) Goldstone state is expected in a dilute Bose gas for temperatures between the Bose gas critical temperature where the atom Bose-Einstein condensate appears and the temperature where superfluidity sets in. The presence of superfluidity is tied to the existence of a U(1) charge-two diatom condensate in the system. By promoting the global U(1) symmetry of the theory to a gauge symmetry, we find that the mass of the gauge particle generated through the Anderson-Higgs mechanism is related to the superfluid density via the Meissner effect and the superfluid de…
We study from the perspective of quantum information scrambling an acoustic black hole modelled by two semi-infinite, stationary, one dimensional condensates, connected by a spatial step-like discontinuity, and flowing respectively at subsonic and supersonic velocities. We develop a simple analytical treatment based on Bogolyubov theory of quantum fluctuations which is sufficient to derive analogue Hawking emission, and we compute out-of-time order correlations (OTOCs) of the Bose density field. We find that sonic black holes are slow scramblers contrary to their astrophysical counterparts: th…
We describe the transition of $N$ weakly interacting atoms into a Bose-Einstein condensate within a number-conserving quantum master equation theory. Based on the separation of time scales for condensate formation and non-condensate thermalization, we derive a master equation for the condensate subsystem in the presence of the non-condensate environment under the inclusion of all two body interaction processes. We numerically monitor the condensate particle number distribution during condensate formation, and derive a condition under which the unique equilibrium steady state of a dilute, weakl…
By using two-fluid model the effect of impurities on the transition temperature of a dipolar trapped Bose gas is investigated. By treating Gaussian spatial correlation for impurities from the interaction modified spectra of the system, the formula for the shift of transition temperature is derived. The shift of the transition temperature contains essentially three contributions due to contact, dipole-dipole and impurity interactions. Applying our results to Dipolar Bose gases show that the shift of the transition temperature due to impurities could be measured for isotropic trap (dipole-dipole…
