An impurity in a Bose gas is commonly referred to as Bose polaron. For a dilute Bose gas its properties are expected to be universal, that is dependent only on a few parameters characterizing the boson-impurity interactions. When boson-impurity interactions are weak, it has been known for some time that the properties of the polaron depend only on the scattering length of these interactions. In this paper which accompanies and extends Ref. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 123403 (2021)] (where some of these results have already been reported) we examine stronger boson-impurity interactions, keeping their range finite. We demonstrate that for attractive interactions between impurity and the bosons up to and including the unitary point of these interactions, all static properties of a Bose polaron in a dilute Bose gas can be calculated in terms of the scattering length and an additional parameter which characterizes the range of the impurity-boson interactions. We show that our approach to this problem is valid if this parameter does not deviate too much from the scattering length of intra-boson interactions, with the precise criterion given in the text. We produce explicit expressions for the energy and other properties of polaron for the case when the impurity-boson scattering length is tuned to unitarity, and we also provide the first correction away from it.
We present a comprehensive discussion of the ground-state properties of dilute $D$-dimensional Bose gas interacting with a few static impurities. Assuming the short-ranged character of the boson-impurity interaction, we calculate the energy of three- and two-dimensional Bose systems with one and two impurities immersed.
We formulate a general scheme for calculation of thermodynamic properties of ideal Bose gas with microscopic number of static impurities immersed, when the system is loaded in the harmonic trapping potential with quasi-1D and quasi-2D configurations. The binding energy of a single impurity and a detailed study of the medium-induced Casimir-like forces between two impurities in trapped Bose gas are numerically calculated in wide range of temperatures and interaction strengths.
In this paper, we study the problem of an impurity with infinite mass and the Casimir force between two impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate. Our calculation results shows that the Casimir force decays exponentially in distance at large distance.
We review recent work on a kinetic model for very low temperature dilute Bose gases. The brief derivation, expressions for hydrodynamics modes, and the comparison with a experiment on a BEC of $^{87}{\rm Rb}$ atoms are presented.
The thermodynamic and superfluid properties of the dilute two-dimensional binary Bose mixture at low temperatures are discussed. We also considered the problem of the emergence of the long-range order in these systems. All calculations are performed by means of celebrated Popov's path-integral approach for the Bose gas with a short-range interparticle potential.
The exact relations for strongly interacting Fermi gasses, recently derived by Tan, are shown to first order in the loop expansion to also apply to dilute Bose gasses. A simple thermodynamic argument is put forward to support their validity. As an application, the second-order correction to the depletion of the condensate is determined to logarithmic accuracy.
The properties of a dilute Bose gas with the non-Gaussian quenched disorder are analysed. Being more specific we have considered a system of bosons immersed in the classical bath consisting of the non-interacting particles with infinite mass. Making use of perturbation theory up to second order we have studied the impact of environment on the ground-state thermodynamic and superfluid characteristics of the Bose component.
We study the Bardeen-Cooper-Shrieffer (BCS) pairing state of a two-component Bose gas with a symmetric spin-orbit coupling. In the dilute limit at low temperatures, this system is essentially a dilute gas of diatomic molecules. We compute the effective mass of the molecule and find that it is anisotropic in momentum space. The critical temperature of the pairing state is about eight times smaller than the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) transition temperature of an ideal Bose gas with the same density.
We consider impurity atoms embedded in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a quasi-one dimensional regime. We study the effects of repulsive coupling between the impurities and Bose species on the equilibrium of the system for both miscible and immiscible mixtures by numerically solving the underlying coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Our results reveal that the presence of impurities may lead to a miscible-immiscible phase transition due to the interaction of the impurities and the two condensates. Within the realm of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations we calculate the quantum fluct…
Using Boltzmann's equation, we study the effect of three-body losses on the momentum distribution of a homogeneous unitary Bose gas in the dilute limit where quantum correlations are negligible. We calculate the momentum distribution of the gas and show that inelastic collisions are quantitatively as important as a second order virial correction.
We revisit the problem of the calculation of low-temperature properties for the dilute two-dimensional Bose gas. By using Popov's hydrodynamic approach and perturbation theory on the one-loop level we recover not only the known expansion for the ground-state energy but also calculate for the first time the condensate density and Tan's contact.
The weak coupling many-polaron formalism is applied to the case of the polaronic system consisting of impurities in a Bose-Einstein condensate. This allows to investigate the groundstate properties and the response of the system to Bragg spectroscopy. This theory is then applied to the system of spin-polarized fermionic lithium-6 impurities in a sodium condensate. The Bragg spectrum reveals a peak which corresponds to the emission of Bogoliubov excitations. Both ground state properties and the response spectrum show that the polaronic effect vanishes at large densities. We also look at two pos…
Landau was the first to advance hydrodynamic concepts such as density and velocity to describe the superfluidity of liquid He$^4$. Due to the recent spectacular success of experiments demonstrating Bose Einstein condensation in dilute Bose atomic gases, interest has been revitalized in the theoretical description of Bose Einstein condensates. Many of the properties of these gases were obtained by using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) to derive the hydrodynamic equations for the gases. However, it is interesting to apply the hydrodynamic equations obtained by Yee for bosons. Many of the pro…
We exactly calculate the full temperature dependence of Casimir-like forces appearing between two and three static impurities loaded in the ideal Bose gas below the Bose-Einstein condensation transition point. Assuming the short-ranged character of the boson-impurity interaction, the calculation procedure presented here can be easily extended on a Bose system with an arbitrary number of impurities immersed.
We study the Casimir potential between two impurities immersed in a spin-orbit coupled BoseEinstein condensate (BEC) with plane-wave order. We find that, by exchanging the virtual phonons/excitations, a remarkable anisotropic oscillating potential with both positive and negative parts can be induced between the impurities, with the period of the oscillation depending on the spin-orbit coupling strength. As a consequence, this would inevitably lead to a non-central Casimir force, which can be tuned by varying the strength of spin-orbit coupling . These results are elucidated for BECs with one-d…
Using a species-selective dipole potential, we create initially localized impurities and investigate their interactions with a majority species of bosonic atoms in a one-dimensional configuration during expansion. We find an interaction-dependent amplitude reduction of the oscillation of the impurities' size with no measurable frequency shift, and study it as a function of the interaction strength. We discuss possible theoretical interpretations of the data. We compare, in particular, with a polaronic mass shift model derived following Feynman variational approach.
We study the properties of an impurity immersed in a weakly interacting Bose gas, i.e., of a Bose polaron. In the perturbatively-tractable of limit weak impurity-boson interactions many of its properties are known to depend only on the scattering length. Here we demonstrate that for strong (unitary) impurity-boson interactions all static quasiproperties of a Bose polaron in a dilute Bose gas, such as its energy, its residue, its Tan's contact and the number of bosons trapped nearby the impurity, depend on the impurity-boson potential via a single parameter.
Motivated by the recent experiment [R. Lopes et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 190404 (2017)] with a homogeneous Bose gas, we investigate a homogeneous dilute Bose gas to calculate the quantum depletion density. By means of the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action approach within an improved Hartree-Fock approximation, the condensed fraction is recovered in a simpler manner and compared with corresponding findings in experimental data. Additionally, higher-order terms are taken into account for several physical quantities, in particular for the chemical potential and free energy density.
Experimental advances in synthesizing spin-orbit couplings in cold atomic Bose gases promise to create single-particle dispersion laws featuring energy minima that are degenerate on a ring or a sphere in momentum space. We show that for arbitrary space dimensionality the ground-state properties of a dilute system of spin-orbit coupled Bose particles with such dispersion and short-range repulsive interactions are universal: the chemical potential exhibits a quadratic dependence on the particle density as found in a one-dimensional free Fermi gas.
In a manner of Cornwal-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action approach, the density of condensate of a dilute Bose gas confined between two planar walls is investigated within the framework of improved Hartree-Fock. Thereby, the quantum fluctuations are taken into account with presence of high-order terms in the momentum integrals. Our results show that the quantum fluctuations significantly belittle the density of condensate compared with square of the expectation value of the field operator. The comparison with relating results of Gross-Pitaevskii theory is made.
The well-known Yukawa and Efimov potentials are two different mediated interaction potentials. The first one arises in quantum field theory from the exchange of virtual particles. The second one is mediated by a real particle resonantly interacting with two other particles. This Letter shows how two impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate can exhibit both phenomena. For a weak impurity-boson attractive interactionattraction with the condensate, the two impurities form two polarons that interact through a weak Yukawa attraction mediated by virtual excitations. For a resonant attractio…
Ultra-cold atomic gases provide new chance to study the universal critical behavior of phase transition. We study theoretically the matter wave interference for ultra-cold Bose gases in the critical regime. We demonstrate that the interference in the momentum distribution can be used to extract the correlation in the Bose gas. A simple relation between the interference visibility and the correlation length is found and used to interpret the pioneering experiment about the critical behavior of dilute Bose gases [Science {\bf 315}, 1556 (2007)]. Our theory paves the way to experimentally study v…
The properties of impurity immersed in the dilute $D$-dimensional Bose gas at temperatures close to the second-order phase transition point are considered. Particularly by means of the $1/N$-expansion we calculated the leading-order polaron energy and the damping rate in the limit of vanishing boson-boson interaction. It is show that the perturbative effective mass and the quasiparticle residue diverge logarithmically in the long-length limit signalling the non-analytic behavior of impurity spectrum and a non-pole structure of a polaron Green's function in the infrared region, respectively.
By using two-fluid model the effect of impurities on the transition temperature of a dipolar trapped Bose gas is investigated. By treating Gaussian spatial correlation for impurities from the interaction modified spectra of the system, the formula for the shift of transition temperature is derived. The shift of the transition temperature contains essentially three contributions due to contact, dipole-dipole and impurity interactions. Applying our results to Dipolar Bose gases show that the shift of the transition temperature due to impurities could be measured for isotropic trap (dipole-dipole…
The properties of a Bose polaron immersed in a dilute two-dimensional medium at finite temperatures are discussed. Assuming that the impurity is weakly-coupled to the bath particles we have perturbatively calculated the polaron energy, effective mass, quasiparticle residue and damping rate. The parameters of impurity spectrum are found to be well-defined in the whole temperature region whereas the pole structure of the impurity Green's function is visible only at absolute zero. At any finite temperatures the quasiparticle residue is logarithmically divergent signalling of the branch-cut behavi…
We determined perturbatively the low-energy universal thermodynamics of dilute one-dimensional bosons with the three-body repulsive forces. The final results are presented for the limit of vanishing potential range in terms of three-particle scattering length. An analogue of Tan`s energy theorem for considered system is derived in generic case without assuming weakness of the interparticle interaction. We also obtained an exact identity relating the three-body contact to the energy density.
We generalize the application of small polaron theory to ultracold gases of Ref. [\onlinecite{jaksch_njp1}] to the case of Bose-Fermi mixtures, where both components are loaded into an optical lattice. In a suitable range of parameters, the mixture can be described within a Bogoliubov approach in the presence of fermionic (dynamic) impurities and an effective description in terms of polarons applies. In the dilute limit of the slow impurity regime, the hopping of fermionic particles is exponentially renormalized due to polaron formation, regardless of the sign of the Bose-Fermi interaction. Th…
We explore the time evolution of two impurities in a trapped one-dimensional Bose gas that follows a change of the boson-impurity interaction. We study the induced impurity-impurity interactions and their effect on the quench dynamics. In particular, we report on the size of the impurity cloud, the impurity-impurity entanglement, and the impurity-impurity correlation function. The presented numerical simulations are based upon the variational multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method for bosons. To analyze and quantify induced impurity-impurity correlations, we employ an effe…
We comment on J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 91, 024001 (2022) by Masaki-Kato et al. and show that their results are in very good agreement with the semi-classical spin-wave approximation of Bose-Hubbard model in the hardcore limit. This allows for recovering the analytical formulae for both the s-wave scattering length and the Lee-Huang-Yang correction.
The Casimir effect in a dilute Bose gas confined between two planar walls is investigated in the canonical ensemble at zero temperature by means of Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action approach within the improved Hartree-Fock approximation. Our results show that: (i) the Casimir energy and the resulting Casimir force in the canonical ensemble remarkably differ from those in the grand canonical ensemble; (ii) when the distance between two planar walls increases, the Casimir energy and Casimir force decay in accordance with a half-integer power law in the canonical ensemble instead of an …
We compute the Tan's contact of a weakly interacting Bose gas at zero temperature in a cigar-shaped configuration. Using an effective one-dimensional Gross-Pitaeskii equation and Bogoliubov theory, we derive an analytical formula that interpolates between the three-dimensional and the one-dimensional mean-field regimes. In the strictly one-dimensional limit, we compare our results with Lieb-Liniger theory. Our study can be a guide for actual experiments interested in the study of Tan's contact in the dimensional crossover.
We study the splitting of multiply quantized vortices with large quantum numbers in dilute nonrotated Bose-Einstein condensates in the zero-temperature limit. The splitting is observed to result in vortex-free condensate fragments which are separated by vortex sheets. The number of these fragments is found to be equal to the angular-momentum quantum number of the Bogoliubov excitation mode responsible for the splitting, although the formulation of the fragments cannot be described by small-amplitude excitations. Thus, the realization of an isolated giant vortex and the observation of its split…
Recently, Freilich et al. [Science 329, 1182 (2010)] experimentally discovered stationary states of vortex dipoles, pairs of vortices of opposite circulation, in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates. To explain their observations, we perform simulations based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and obtain excellent quantitative agreement on the size of the stationary dipole. We also investigate how their imaging method, in which atoms are repeatedly extracted from a single condensate, affects the vortex dynamics. We find that it mainly induces isotropic size oscillations of the condensate without oth…
The dynamics of an active, finite-size and immiscible impurity in a dilute quantum fluid at finite temperature is characterized by means of numerical simulations of the projected Gross--Pitaevskii equation. The impurity is modeled as a localized repulsive potential and described with classical degrees of freedom. It is shown that impurities of different sizes thermalize with the fluid and undergo a stochastic dynamics compatible with an Ornstein--Uhlenbeck process at sufficiently large time-lags. The velocity correlation function and the displacement of the impurity are measured and an increme…
We study the stability of the dilute Bose-Fermi and Bose-Bose mixtures with repulsive interactions in one and two dimensions in terms of the renormalization group. For the Bose-Fermi mixture, we show that the uniform mixture is stable against de-mixing in the dilute limit. For the Bose-Bose mixture, we give the stability conditions in the dilute limit. As a byproduct, we also calculate the critical temperature for the superfluid phase of the two-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture in the extremely dilute limit.
We study the quantum dynamics of the two impurities in a trapped quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We explore the effect of impurity-BEC and impurity-impurity interaction strengths on the dynamics of impurities inside the Bose-Einstein condensate. By studying the auto-correlation function of impurities and the BEC, we analyze and quantify the trapping of impurities inside the BEC. We find out that for the small value of inter-species coupling strength the BEC starts to oscillate inside the trap. For mild coupling strengths, attractive and repulsive impurities are captured a…
We present an experimental system to study the Bose polaron by immersion of single, well-controllable neutral Cs impurities into a Rb Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We show that, by proper optical traps, independent control over impurity and BEC allows for precision relative positioning of the two sub-systems as well as for independent read-out. We furthermore estimate that measuring the polaron binding energy of Fröhlich-type Bose polarons in the low and intermediate coupling regime is feasible with our experimental constraints and limitations discussed.
We investigate radiation spectra arising from accelerated point-like impurities in the homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate. A general formula for the radiation spectrum is obtained in the integral form as a function of given impurity trajectory. The Planckian spectrum is obtained for a special accelerated motion, which is shown to be unphysical. Non-Planckian spectrum is found in the case of a uniformly accelerated impurity. We compare our result with similar settings as discussed in other quantum many-body systems.
A few years ago, flow equations were introduced as a technique for calculating the ground-state energies of cold Bose gases with and without impurities. In this paper, we extend this approach to compute observables other than the energy. As an example, we calculate the densities, and phase fluctuations of one-dimensional Bose gases with one and two impurities. For a single mobile impurity, we use flow equations to validate the mean-field results obtained upon the Lee-Low-Pines transformation. We show that the mean-field approximation is accurate for all values of the boson-impurity interaction…
We investigate the localization pattern of interacting impurities, which are trapped in a lattice potential and couple to a Bose gas. For small interspecies interaction strengths, the impurities populate the energetically lowest Bloch state or localize separately in different wells with one extra particle being delocalized over all the wells, depending on the lattice depth. In contrast, for large interspecies interaction strengths we find that due to the fractional filling of the lattice and the competition of the repulsive contact interaction between the impurities and the attractive interact…
We propose a practical protocol to generate and observe a non-Abelian geometric phase using a periodically driven Raman process in the hyperfne ground state manifold of atoms in a dilute ultracold gas. Our analysis is based upon recent developments and application of Floquet theory to periodically driven quantum systems. The simulation results show the non-Abelian gauge transformation and the non-commuting property of the SU(2) transformation operators. Based on these results, we propose a possible experimental implementation with an ultracold dilute Bose gas.
I give a unified perspective on the properties of a variety of quantum liquids using the theory of quantum phase transitions. A central role is played by a zero density quantum critical point which is argued to control the properties of the dilute gas. An exact renormalization group analysis of such quantum critical points leads to a computation of the universal properties of the dilute Bose gas and the spinful Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance.
Following an earlier calculation in 3D, we calculate the 2D critical temperature of a dilute, translation-invariant Bose gas using a variational formulation of the Bogoliubov approximation introduced by Critchley and Solomon in 1976. This provides the first analytical calculation of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature that includes the constant in the logarithm.
We show a method to accelerate quantum adiabatic transport of identical spinless particles interacting with each other by developing the preceding fast-forward scaling theory formed for one-particle systems [Masuda and Nakamura, {\it Proc. R. Soc.} A {\bf 466}, 1135 (2010)]. We derive a driving potential which accelerates adiabatic dynamics of quantum systems composed of identical particles in order to obtain the final adiabatic states in any desired short time. We also exhibit an ideal rapid manipulation of dilute Bose gas in the ground state without energy excitation by using the fast-forwar…
We study a two-component Bose gas with a symmetric spin-orbit coupling, and find that two atoms can form a bound state with any intra- or inter-species scattering length. Consequently, in the dilute limit, the Bardeen-Cooper-Shrieffer (BCS) pairing state of bosons can be formed with weakly-attractive inter-species and repulsive intra-species interactions. The quasiparticle excitation energies are anisotropic due to spin-orbit coupling. This BCS paring state is energetically favored over Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of atoms at low densities. As the density increases, there is a first-order…
We study entanglement and squeezing of two uncoupled impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We treat them as two quantum Brownian particles interacting with a bath composed of the Bogoliubov modes of the condensate. The Langevin-like quantum stochastic equations derived exhibit memory effects. We study two scenarios: (i) In the absence of an external potential, we observe sudden death of entanglement; (ii) In the presence of an external harmonic potential, entanglement survives even at the asymptotic time limit. Our study considers experimentally tunable parameters.
We compute the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute three-dimensional homogeneous Bose gases. Our method involves the models of spatial permutations and it should be exact to lowest order in the scattering length of the particle interactions. We find that the change in the critical temperature is proportional to a rho^{1/3} with constant c = -2.33; this contradicts the current consensus among physicists.
For a dilute system of non-relativistic bosons interacting through a positive $L^1$ potential $v$ with scattering length $a$ we prove that the ground state energy density satisfies the bound $e(ρ) \geq 4πa ρ^2 (1+ \frac{128}{15\sqrtπ} \sqrt{ρa^3} +o(\sqrt{ρa^3}\,))$, thereby proving the Lee-Huang-Yang formula for the energy density.
We study the lifetime of single-particle excitations in a dilute homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature based on a self-consistent perturbation expansion of satisfying Goldstone's theorem and conservation laws simultaneously. It is shown that every excitation for each momentum ${\bf p}$ should have a finite lifetime proportional to the inverse $a^{-1}$ of the $s$-wave scattering length $a$, instead of $a^{-2}$ for the normal state, due to a new class of Feynman diagrams for the self-energy that emerges upon condensation. We calculate the lifetime as a function of $|{\bf p}|$ a…
Polarons, self-localized composite objects formed by the interaction of a single impurity particle with a host medium, are a paradigm of strong interaction many-body physics. We show that dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC's) are the first medium known to self-localize the same impurity particles both in a Landau-Pekar polaron state akin to that of self-localized electrons in a dielectric lattice, and in a bubble state akin to that of electron bubbles in helium. We also show that the BEC-impurity system is fully characterized by just two dimensionless coupling constants, and that it can…
