Coupled nonlinear system of reaction-diffusion equations describing multi-component (species) interactions with heterogeneous coefficients is considered. Finite volume method based approximation for the space is used to construct semi-discrete form for the computation of numerical solutions. Two techniques for time approximations, namely, a fully implicit (FI) and a semi-implicit (SI) schemes are examined. The fully implicit scheme is constructed using Newton's method and leads to the coupled system of equations on each nonlinear and time iterations which is computationally rather expensive. In order to minimize the latter hurdle, an efficient and fast multiscale solver is proposed for reaction-diffusion systems in heterogeneous media. To construct fast solver, we apply a semi-implicit scheme that leads to an uncoupled system for each individual component. To reduce the size of the discrete system, we present a multiscale model reduction technique. Multiscale solver is based on the uncoupled operator of the problem and constructed by the use of Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method (GMsFEM). In GMsFEM we use a diffusion part of the operator and construct multiscale basis functions. We collect multiscale basis functions to construct a projection/prolongation matrix and generate reduced order model on the coarse grid for fast solution. Moreover, the prolongation operator is used to reconstruct a fine-scale solution and accurate approximation of the reaction part of the problem which then leads to a very accurate and computationally effective multiscale solver. We provide numerical results for two species competition test problems in two-dimensional domain with heterogeneous inclusions. We investigate the influence of number of the multiscale basis functions to the method accuracy and ability to work with different values of the diffusion coefficients.
In this paper, we systemically review and compare two mixed multiscale finite element methods (MMsFEM) for multiphase transport in highly heterogeneous media. In particular, we will consider the mixed multiscale finite element method using limited global information, simply denoted by MMsFEM, and the mixed generalized multiscale finite element method (MGMsFEM) with residual driven online multiscale basis functions. Both methods are under the framework of mixed multiscale finite element methods, where the pressure equation is solved in the coarse grid with carefully constructed multiscale basis…
We propose a multiscale approach for a nonlinear Helmholtz problem with possible oscillations in the Kerr coefficient, the refractive index, and the diffusion coefficient. The method does not rely on structural assumptions on the coefficients and combines the multiscale technique known as Localized Orthogonal Decomposition with an adaptive iterative approximation of the nonlinearity. We rigorously analyze the method in terms of well-posedness and convergence properties based on suitable assumptions on the initial data and the discretization parameters. Numerical examples illustrate the theoret…
A novel method to enable application of the Multiscale Restricted Smoothed Basis (MsRSB) method to non M-matrices is presented. The original MsRSB method is enhanced with a filtering strategy enforcing M-matrix properties to enable the robust application of MsRSB as a preconditioner. Through applications to porous media flow and linear elastic geomechanics, the method is proven to be effective for scalar and vector problems with multipoint finite volume (FV) and finite element (FE) discretization schemes, respectively. Realistic complex (un)structured two- and three-dimensional test cases are …
In this paper, we develop a computational multiscale to solve the parabolic wave approximation with heterogeneous and variable media. Parabolic wave approximation is a technique to approximate the full wave equation. One benefit of the method is that: one wave propagation direction can be taken as an evolution direction, and we then can discretize it using a classical scheme like Backward Euler. Consequently, we obtain a set of quasi-gas-dynamic (QGD) models with different heterogeneous permeability fields. Then, we employ constraint energy minimization generalized multiscale finite element me…
Historically, analysis for multiscale PDEs is largely unified while numerical schemes tend to be equation-specific. In this paper, we propose a unified framework for computing multiscale problems through random sampling. This is achieved by incorporating randomized SVD solvers and manifold learning techniques to numerically reconstruct the low-rank features of multiscale PDEs. We use multiscale radiative transfer equation and elliptic equation with rough media to showcase the application of this framework.
A three dimensional parallel implementation of Multiscale Mixed Methods based on non-overlapping domain decomposition techniques is proposed for multi-core computers and its computational performance is assessed by means of numerical experimentation. As a prototypical method, from which many others can be derived, the Multiscale Robin Coupled Method is chosen and its implementation explained in detail. Numerical results for problems ranging from millions up to more than 2 billion computational cells in highly heterogeneous anisotropic rock formations based on the SPE10 benchmark are shown. The…
In this paper, we consider a poroelasticity problem in heterogeneous multicontinuum media that is widely used in simulations of the unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs and geothermal fields. Mathematical model contains a coupled system of equations for pressures in each continuum and effective equation for displacement with volume force sources that are proportional to the sum of the pressure gradients for each continuum. To illustrate the idea of our approach, we consider a dual continuum background model with discrete fracture networks that can be generalized to a multicontinuum model for …

In this paper, we present a multiscale method for simulations of the multicontinua unsaturated flow problems in heterogeneous fractured porous media. The mathematical model is described by the system of Richards equations for each continuum that coupled by the specific transfer term. To illustrate the idea of our approach, we consider a dual continua background model with discrete fractures networks that generalized as a multicontinua model for unsaturated fluid flow in the complex heterogeneous porous media. We present fine grid approximation based on the finite element method and Discrete Fr…
In this work, we propose a local multiscale model reduction approach for the time-domain scalar wave equation in a heterogenous media. A fine mesh is used to capture the heterogeneities of the coefficient field, and the equation is solved globally on a coarse mesh in the discontinuous Galerkin discretization setting. The main idea of the model reduction approach is to extract dominant modes in local spectral problems for representation of important features, construct multiscale basis functions in coarse oversampled regions by constraint energy minimization problems, and perform a Petrov-Galer…
We present a fast direct solver for boundary integral equations on complex surfaces in three dimensions using an extension of the recently introduced recursive strong skeletonization scheme. For problems that are not highly oscillatory, our algorithm computes an ${LU}$-like hierarchical factorization of the dense system matrix, permitting application of the inverse in $\mathcal O(n)$ time, where $n$ is the number of unknowns on the surface. The factorization itself also scales linearly with the system size, albeit with a somewhat larger constant. The scheme is built on a level-restricted adapt…
We propose a deep learning approach for wave propagation in media with multiscale wave speed, using a second-order linear wave equation model. We use neural networks to enhance the accuracy of a given inaccurate coarse solver, which under-resolves a class of multiscale wave media and wave fields of interest. Our approach involves generating training data by the given computationally efficient coarse solver and another sufficiently accurate solver, applied to a class of wave media (described by their wave speed profiles) and initial wave fields. We find that the trained neural networks can appr…

In this paper, we consider a class of convection-diffusion equations with memory effects. These equations arise as a result of homogenization or upscaling of linear transport equations in heterogeneous media and play an important role in many applications. First, we present a dememorization technique for these equations. We show that the convection-diffusion equations with memory effects can be written as a system of standard convection-diffusion-reaction equations. This allows removing the memory term and simplifying the computations. We consider a relation between dememorized equations and m…
In this paper, we study the generalized multiscale finite element method (GMsFEM) for single phase compressible flow in highly heterogeneous porous media. We follow the major steps of the GMsFEM to construct permeability dependent offline basis for fast coarse-grid simulation. The offline coarse space is efficiently constructed only once based on the initial permeability field with parallel computing. A rigorous convergence analysis is performed for two types of snapshot spaces. The analysis indicates that the convergence rates of the proposed multiscale method depend on the coarse meshsize an…
In this paper, we consider the quasi-gas-dynamic (QGD) model in a multiscale environment. The model equations can be regarded as a hyperbolic regularization and are derived from kinetic equations. So far, the research on QGD models has been focused on problems with constant coefficients. In this paper, we investigate the QGD model in multiscale media, which can be used in porous media applications. This multiscale problem is interesting from a multiscale methodology point of view as the model problem has a hyperbolic multiscale term, and designing multiscale methods for hyperbolic equations is…

In this article, we present data-driven reduced-order modeling for nonautonomous dynamical systems in multiscale media using Koopman operators. Different from the case of autonomous dynamical systems, the Koopman operator family of nonautonomous dynamical systems significantly depend on a time pair. In order to effectively estimate the time-dependent Koopman operators, a moving time window is used to decompose the snapshot data, and the extended dynamic mode decomposition method is applied to computing the Koopman operators in each local temporal domain. Many physical properties in multiscale …
In this work, we introduce a time memory formalism in poroelasticity model that couples the pressure and displacement. We assume this multiphysics process occurs in multicontinuum media. The mathematical model contains a coupled system of equations for pressures in each continuum and elasticity equations for displacements of the medium. We assume that the temporal dynamics is governed by fractional derivatives following some works in the literature. We derive an implicit finite difference approximation for time discretization based on the Caputo time fractional derivative. A Discrete Fracture …
