Radon is the main background source of dark matter and neutrino experiments. Radon concentration ($\rm mBq/m^3$) measurement by liquid scintillation detector is a highly sensitive method at low temperatures using silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) arrays. The SiPM performance characteristics are closely related to the lower detection limit of the detector. In this study, we built an automatic and accurate low-temperature measurement system to study the single photoelectron spectrum, SPE resolution, optical crosstalk, and after-pulse of the SiPM at different temperatures. As a result, we obtained the variation trend of the SiPM parameters at different temperatures, and the SiPM optimal working conditions were obtained, which can improve the detector's sensitivity
The gain of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) increases with bias voltage and decreases with temperature. To operate SiPMs at stable gain, the bias voltage can be adjusted to compensate temperature changes. We have tested this concept with 30 SiPMs from three manufacturers (Hamamatsu, KETEK, CPTA) in a climate chamber at CERN varying the temperature from $1^\circ \rm C$ to $50^\circ \rm C$. We built an adaptive power supply that used a linear temperature dependence of the bias voltage readjustment. With one selected bias voltage readjustment, we stabilized four SiPMs simultaneously. We fulfille…

In recent years, SiPM photoelectric devices have drawn much attention in the domain of time-of-flight-based positron emission tomography (TOF-PET). Using them to construct PET detectors with excellent coincidence time resolution (CTR) is always one of research focus. In this paper, a SiPM readout pre-amplifier based on common-base current amplifier structure followed by a Pole-Zero (PZ) compensation network is constructed, and the main factors that affect the timing performance of the PET detector are investigated. By experimental measurement, we found that the CTR is heavily related to the ba…
The DarkSide-20k collaboration is preparing to equip 20 m^2 of SiPMs working in liquid argon at 86 K for the direct search of WIMPs. The collaboration had to solve many technological aspects, such as the development of SiPM optimized for operation in liquid argon, the readout of large SiPM-based detectors, the reliable packaging of more than 200000 SiPMs using radiopure materials. The packaging solutions available for cryogenic applications and the performances of the newest cryogenic extended gain SiPMs from FBK will be discussed.
Scintillators capable of detecting both neutrons and gamma-rays have generated considerable interest. In particular, the use of such scintillators with silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) enables low-power and compact-geometry applications. Three types of Li-loaded scintillators, CLYC, CLLB, and NaIL, have been tested with a custom-designed SiPM array for temperatures between --20 and 50$^{\circ}$C. The array consists of four 6x6~mm$^2$ SiPMs arranged in a 2x2 configuration. Pulse shape discrimination is used for neutron and gamma identification. Because the pulse shape changes with temperature, …
Compact X-rays detectors made of 1/2 inch Ce:LaBr3 crystals of cubic shape with SiPM array readout have been developed for the FAMUexperiment at RIKEN-RAL, to instrument regions of difficult access. Due to the high photon yield of Ce:LaBr3 it was possible to use a simple readout scheme based on CAEN V1730 digitizers, without a dedicated amplification stage. The drift with temperature of SiPM gain was corrected by using CAEN A7885D regulated power supply chips with temperature feedback. Energy resolutions (FWHM) around 3:5% at the 137Cs peak and around 9% at the 57Co peak were obtained.
With the successful construction and operation of a highly granular hadron calorimeter system, featuring approx. 22000 individually read out SiPM-on-tile channels, the CALICE collaboration has set the next milestone in proving the scalability of the concept for a future high energy linear collider experiment. For this large sample of photosensors a new approach of quality control was required to sufficiently characterise and monitor device parameters for both, test bench and in-situ beam test data. In the presence of temperature fluctuations during operation, it was possible to stabilise the S…
Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPM) are becoming the photo-detector of choice for increasingly more particle detection applications, from fundamental physics to medical and societal applications. One major consideration for their use at high-luminosity colliders is the radiation damage induced by hadrons, which leads to a dramatic increase of the dark count rate. KETEK SiPMs have been exposed to various fluences of reactor neutrons up to $Φ_{neq}$ = 5$\times$10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ (1 MeV equivalent neutrons). Results from the I-V, and C-V measurements for temperatures between $-$30$^\circ$C and $+$3…

The aim is a precise measurement of the proton Zemach radius with incoming muons. Additional applications may be found in medical physics, such as PET, homeland security and gamma-ray astronomy. Due to the high photon yield of LaBr3:Ce it was possible to use a simple readout scheme based on CAEN V1730 digitizers. Detectors, using Hamamatsu S13361 or S14161 arrays, have good FWHM energy resolutions up to 3 % (8 %) at the Cs137 Co57) peak…
We report on the measurement of the neutron radiation hardness of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) manufactured by Hamamatsu Corporation in Japan and SensL in Ireland. Samples from both companies were irradiated by neutrons created by a 1 GeV electron beam hitting a thin lead target at Jefferson Lab Hall A. More tests regarding the temperature dependence of the neutron radiation damage and self-annealing were performed on Hamamatsu SiPMs using a calibrated Am-Be neutron source from the Jefferson Lab Radiation Control group. As the result of irradiation both dark current and dark rate increase …
The main effect of radiation damage in a Silicon-Photolumtiplier (SiPM) is a dramatic increase in the dark current. The power dissipated, if not properly cooled, heats the SiPM, whose performance parameters depend on temperature. Heating studies were performed with a KETEK SiPM, glued on an Al$_2$O$_3$ substrate, which is either directly connected to the temperature-controlled chuck of a probe station, or through layers of material with well-known thermal resistance. The SiPM is illuminated by a LED operated in DC-mode. The SiPM current is measured and used to determine the steady-state temper…
We present in this paper the comparison of methods to measure parameters to characterize a large SiPM of area of about 1 cm$^2$. We also explain the challenges of operating it with continuous light and at room temperature. We present a method to compensate for the voltage drop induced by emission to continuous illumination in order to control its response stability. This is important for applications where illumination changes with time, such as when they are employed in cameras of gamma-ray telescopes.
We report on the characterization of near-ultraviolet high density silicon photomultiplier (\SiPM) developed at Fondazione Bruno Kessler (\FBK) at cryogenic temperature. A dedicated setup was built to measure the primary dark noise and correlated noise of the \SiPMs\ between 40 and 300~K. Moreover, an analysis program and data acquisition system were developed to allow the precise characterization of these parameters, some of which can vary up to 7 orders of magnitude between room temperature and 40~K. We demonstrate that it is possible to operate the \FBK\ near-ultraviolet high density \SiPMs…
Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) have a low radioactivity, compact geometry, low operation voltage, and reasonable photo-detection efficiency for vacuum ultraviolet light (VUV). Therefore it has the potential to replace photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) for future dark matter experiments with liquid xenon (LXe). However, SiPMs have nearly two orders of magnitude higher dark count rate (DCR) compared to that of PMTs at the LXe temperature ($\sim$ 165 K). This type of high DCR mainly originates from the carriers that are generated by band-to-band tunneling effect. To suppress the tunneling effect, we…
LaB$_3$:Ce crystals have been introduced for radiation imaging in medical physics, with photomultiplier or single SiPM readout. An R-D was pursued with 1/2" and 1" LaBr3:Ce crystals, from different producers, to realize compact large area detectors (up to some cm$^2$ area) with SiPM array readout, aiming at high light yields, good energy resolution, good detector linearity and fast time response for low-energy X-rays. A natural application was found inside the FAMU project at RIKEN-RAL muon facility, that aims at a precise measure of the proton Zemach radius to solve the so-called "proton radi…

The temperature of a nonneutral plasma confined in a Penning-Malmberg trap can be determined by slowly lowering one side of the trap's electrostatic axial confinement barrier; the temperature is inferred from the rate at which particles escape the trap as a function of the barrier height. Often, the escaping particles are directed toward a microchannel plate (MCP), and the resulting amplified charge is collected on a phosphor screen. The screen is used for imaging the plasma, but can also be used as a Faraday cup FC for a temperature measurement. The sensitivity limit is then set by microphoni…
Silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) are solid state light detectors with sensitivity to single photons. Their use in high energy physics experiments, and in particular in ring imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors, is hindered by their poor tolerance to radiation. At room temperature the large increase in dark count rate makes single photon detection practically impossible already at 10$^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ 1-MeV-equivalent neutron fluence. The neutron fluences foreseen by many subdetectors to be operated at the high luminosity LHC range up to 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ 1-MeV-equivalent. In this paper we presen…

Particle detectors based on liquid argon (LAr) have recently become recognized as an extremely attractive technology for the direct detection of dark matter as well as the measurement of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS). The Chinese argon group at Institute of High Energy Physics has been studying the LAr detector technology and a LAr detector has been operating steadily. A program of using a dual phase LAr detector to measure the CE$ν$NS at Taishang Nuclear Power Plant has been proposed and the R\&D work is ongoing. Considering the requirements of ultra-low radio-purity …
The gain of SiPMs depends both on bias voltage and on temperature. For stable operations, both need to be kept constant. In an ILC calorimeter with millions of channels, this is a challenging task. It is, therefore, desirable to compensate for temperature variations by automatically readjusting the bias voltage. We have designed a bias voltage regulator board to achieve this task. We anticipate an uncertainty on the gain stability at the level of $< 1\%$. First, we present measurements of the gain dependence on temperature and bias voltage for several SiPMs from three different manufacturers a…
We present herein gain stabilization studies of SiPMs using a climate chamber at CERN. We present results for four detectors not tested before, three from Hamamatsu and one from KETEK. Two of the Hamamatsu SiPMs are novel sensors with trenches that reduce cross talk. We use an improved readout system with a digital oscilloscope controlled with a dedicated LabView program. We improved and automized the analysis to deal with large datasets. We have measured the gain-versus-bias-voltage dependence at fixed temperature and gain-versus-temperature dependence at fixed bias voltage to determine the b…
Recently, silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) have been used in several space-borne missions, owing to their solid state, compact size, low operating voltage, and insensitivity to magnetic fields. However, operating SiPMs in space results in radiation damage and degraded performance. In-orbit quantitative studies on these effects are limited. In this study, we present in-orbit SiPM characterization results obtained by the second detector of the Gamma-Ray Integrated Detectors (GRID-02), which was launched on 6 November 2020. An increase in dark current of $\sim$100 $μ$A/year per SiPM chip (model M…
Decreasing the operation temperature of a Silicon Photo-Multiplier (SiPM) leads to a drop in its dark noise. Some experiments consider cold temperatures as an option for low noise applications of SiPM. One of those is the TAO detector, which requires operation at $T\approx -50~^\circ$C. A significant dependence of the Photon Detection Efficiency (PDE) of a SiPM on different temperatures was reported with a drastic drop around this temperature. In this paper, we present studies of performance for two samples of SiPMs from Hamamatsu and AdvanSID(FBK) companies in a broad temperature range. No si…
Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) are an excellent candidate for the development of large-area light sensors. Large SiPM-based detectors require low-noise pre-amplifiers to maximize the signal coupling between the sensor and the readout electronics. This article reports on the development of a low-noise transimpedance amplifier sensitive to single-photon signals at cryogenic temperature. The amplifier is used to readout a 1 cm$^{2}$ SiPM with a signal to noise ratio in excess of 40.
This paper presents the results of the proton irradiation of silicon photomulipliers (SiPMs) by mono-energetic 170 MeV protons with fluence up to 4.6$\times$10$^{9}$ particles/cm$^2$. In our work, three types of silicon photodetectors from Hamamatsu with areas 3$\times$3 mm$^2$ and different subpixel sizes of 25$\times$25 $μ$m$^2$, 50$\times$50 $μ$m$^2$, and 75$\times$75 $μ$m$^2$ were used. The changes in the SiPM dark count rate (DCR) spectrum before and after irradiation in temperatures in the range of 20 $^\circ$C to -65 $^\circ$C are presented. The influence of the DCR changes on the energ…

Prototype SiPMs with 4384 pixels of dimensions $15 \times 15~μ$m$^2$ produced by KETEK have been irradiated with reactor neutrons to eight fluences between $10^9$ and $5\times 10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$. For temperatures between $-30~^\circ $C and $+30~^\circ $C capacitance-voltage, admittance-frequency, current-forward voltage, current-reverse voltage and charge-voltage measurements with and without illumination by a sub-nanosecond laser have been performed. The data have been analysed using different methods in order to extract the dependence on neutron fluence and temperature of the electrical para…
Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are a good alternative to photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) because their gain and quantum efficiency are comparable to PMTs. However, the largest single-chip SiPM is still less than 1~cm$^2$. In order to use SiPMs with scintillators that have reasonable sensitivity, it is necessary to use multiple SiPMs. In this work, scintillation detectors are constructed and tested with a custom 2x2 SiPM array. The layout of the SiPMs and the geometry of the scintillator were determined by performing Geant4 simulations. Cubic NaI, CsI, and CLYC with 18~mm sides have been tested.…
Particle detectors based on liquid argon are now recognised as an attractive technology for dark matter direct detection and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering measurement. A program using a dual-phase liquid argon detector with a fiducial mass of 200~kg to detect coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering at Taishan Nuclear Power Plant has been proposed. SiPMs will be used as the photon sensor because of their high radio-purity and high photon detection efficiency. S13370-6050CN SiPM, made by Hamamatsu, is a candidate for the detector. In this paper, the characterisation of S13370…
Each satellite of the Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM, mission) consists of 25 SiPM based gamma-ray detectors (GRDs). Although SiPM based GRD has merits of compact size and low bias-voltage, the drift of the SiPM gain with temperature is a severe problem for GRD performance. An adaptive voltage supply source was designed to automatically adjust the SiPM bias voltage to compensate the temperature effects and keep the gain stable. This approach has been proved to be effective during both the on-ground and in-flight tests. The in-flight measured v…
This paper presents a low noise amplifier for large arrays of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) operated in cryogenic environments, especially liquid argon (87 K) and liquid nitrogen (77 K). The goal is for one amplifier to read out a total photosensitive surface of tens of cm$^2$ while retaining the capability to resolve single photoelectron signals. Due to the large capacitance of SiPMs, typically a few nF per cm$^2$, the main contributor to noise is the series (voltage) component. A silicon-germanium heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) was selected as the input device of the cryogenic am…

ALDO2 is a multi-function, adjustable, low dropout linear regulator designed in onsemi I3T80 0.35~$μ$m HV CMOS technology for use in HEP detectors that adopt silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). The chip features four independent regulators, two low voltage channels (max 3.3 V) used to filter and stabilize the power supply of front-end chips, and two HV channels (max 70 V), specifically designed to provide the bias voltage to arrays of SiPMs. Each regulator can be independently shut down and is protected for over-current and over-temperature. The HV regulators also implement a circuit to monitor …
The last decade has increasingly seen the use of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) instead of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). This is due to various advantages of the former on the latter like its smaller size, lower operating voltage, higher detection efficiency, insensitivity to magnetic fields and mechanical robustness to launch vibrations. All these features make SiPMs ideal for use on space based experiments where the detectors require to be compact, lightweight and capable of surviving launch conditions. A downside with the use of this novel type of detector in space conditions is its susce…
We compared the performance of a SiPM array and a PMT in a laboratory setting using a single 5.08x5.08-cm cylindrical sodium iodide scintillating crystal. Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are the most commonly used device to monitor scintillating materials for radiation detection purposes. The systems are sometimes limited by disadvantages in the PMTs that may degrade their performance, including temperature dependence and variation with magnetic field. Instrumentation engineering must also contend with a potentially large volume relative to the active scintillator volume, fragility, and high volt…
Radiation damage of J-series silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) has been studied in the context of using these photodetectors in future space-borne scintillation detectors. Several SiPM samples were exposed to 101.4 MeV protons, with 1 MeV neutron equivalent fluence ranging from 1.27*10^8 n/cm^2 to 1.23*10^10 n/cm^2 . After the irradiation, the SiPMs experienced a large increase in the dark current and noise, which may pose problems for long-running space missions in terms of power consumption, thermal control and detection of low-energy events. Measurements performed with a CeBr3 scintillator c…

Characterization measurements have been performed with the newly installed Single Photon Calibration Stand at KIT (SPOCK). The results of the characterization measurements including the breakdown voltage, the gain, the PDE, the dark-count rate and the crosstalk probability of all 64 SiPM channels are presented. Additional measurements of the SiPM sensitivity to photons…
