In recent years, SiPM photoelectric devices have drawn much attention in the domain of time-of-flight-based positron emission tomography (TOF-PET). Using them to construct PET detectors with excellent coincidence time resolution (CTR) is always one of research focus. In this paper, a SiPM readout pre-amplifier based on common-base current amplifier structure followed by a Pole-Zero (PZ) compensation network is constructed, and the main factors that affect the timing performance of the PET detector are investigated. By experimental measurement, we found that the CTR is heavily related to the bandwidth of the amplifier, bias voltage of SiPM, comparator threshold, and PZ network parameter. The test setup has two detectors, one with LYSO crystal (3 mm 3 mm 10 mm) coupled with a Hamamatsu SiPM (S12642-0404), and the other with LaBr3 coupled to a PMT-R9800. After the optimization of the readout circuit with related factors, the CTR between the two detectors is measured as 266ps FWHM. The test result is a helpful guideline for the readout ASIC chip design in our next step.

Compact X-rays detectors made of 1/2 inch Ce:LaBr3 crystals of cubic shape with SiPM array readout have been developed for the FAMUexperiment at RIKEN-RAL, to instrument regions of difficult access. Due to the high photon yield of Ce:LaBr3 it was possible to use a simple readout scheme based on CAEN V1730 digitizers, without a dedicated amplification stage. The drift with temperature of SiPM gain was corrected by using CAEN A7885D regulated power supply chips with temperature feedback. Energy resolutions (FWHM) around 3:5% at the 137Cs peak and around 9% at the 57Co peak were obtained.
A highly granular hadronic calorimeter (HCAL) based on scintillator tiles with individual readout by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) has been constructed by the CALICE collaboration and has been tested extensively in particle beams at CERN. The 7608 SiPMs coupled to scintillator tiles in the approximately 1 cubic meter large calorimeter allow large sample studies of behavior of these devices under varying voltage and temperature as well as their saturation behavior. We also present detailed studies of the temperature dependence of the calorimeter signal in muon and hadron beams. The calibrati…
In this study an array of eight 6 mm x 6 mm area SiPMs was coupled to the end of a long plastic scintillator counter which was exposed to a 2.5 GeV/c muon beam at the CERN PS. Timing characteristics of bars with dimensions 150 cm x 6 cm x 1 cm and 120 cm x 11 cm x 2.5 cm have been studied. An 8-channel SiPM anode readout ASIC (MUSIC R1) based on a novel low input impedance current conveyor has been used to read out and amplify SiPMs independently and sum the signals at the end. Prospects for applications in large-scale particle physics detectors with timing resolution below 100 ps are provided…
This paper describes a new method for optical readout of Time Projection Chambers (TPCs), based on the Linearly Graded Silicon Photomultiplier (LG-SiPM). This is a single photon-sensitive detector with excellent timing and 2D position resolution developed at Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Trento (FBK). The LG-SiPM produces time-varying voltage signals that are used to reconstruct the 3D position and energy of ionisation tracks generated inside the TPC. The TPC used in this work contained room-temperature CF$_4$ gas at a pressure of 100 mbar, with two THGEMs to produce secondary scintillation light.…

A prototype using scintillating fibers with a diameter of $300μm$ and two typ es of silicon photomultipliers has been tested in a $10GeV$ proton beam in late October 2006 at the T9 PS-beamline, CERN. We present the measured spatial resolu tion, efficiency and signal-over-noise for this setup. The advantage o…
Imaging hadronic calorimeters with scintillator readout use small scintillator tiles individually read out by silicon photomultipliers to achieve the necessary granularity needed for sophisticated reconstruction algorithms at future collider detectors. For a second generation prototype of the CALICE analog HCAL new, 3 mm thick scintillator tiles with an embedded wavelength shifting fiber and new photon sensor from CPTA are being fabricated. The availability of blue-sensitive SiPMs also allows fiberless coupling of the photon sensor to the tile, a technique requiring modified geometries to achi…
The recent availability of blue sensitive silicon photomultipliers allows the direct readout of blue emitting plastic scintillator tiles without the use of a wavelength shifting fiber. Such directly read out tiles, without light guides, are attractive for the use in highly granular calorimeters that use large numbers of individual cells and in other applications where very compact designs are needed. However, the total signal amplitude and the uniformity of the response can be problematic in such cases. We have developed a scanning setup to investigate the response of scintillator tiles with S…
Plastic scintillator detectors have been extensively used in particle physics experiments for decades. In this article, we present our study on a direct replacement of commonly used vacuum photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) by arrays of large-area silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). An SiPM array which is directly coupled to the scintillator …

Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) are an excellent candidate for the development of large-area light sensors. Large SiPM-based detectors require low-noise pre-amplifiers to maximize the signal coupling between the sensor and the readout electronics. This article reports on the development of a low-noise transimpedance amplifier sensitive to single-photon signals at cryogenic temperature. The amplifier is used to readout a 1 cm$^{2}$ SiPM with a signal to noise ratio in excess of 40.

Very little work has been done searching for astrophysical transient optical emission in the millisecond to nanosecond regime with significant sensitivity. We call this regime "Ultra-Fast Astronomy", or UFA. To investigate transients on as short time scales as possible, we developed our own customized readout system for a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM)-based UFA camera, intended for use on conventional astronomical telescopes. SiPMs, available in array packages for imaging a field, are capable of time-tagged single-photon detection in the visible wavelength range. Our readout system consists o…
First imaging results in liquid xenon of a Liquid Hole Multiplier (LHM) coupled to a Quad-Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) array are presented. Ionization electrons deposited in the noble liquid by 5.5 MeV alpha particles, are collected into the holes of a Thick Gas Electron Multiplier (THGEM) electrode having a xenon gas bubble trapped underneath. They drift through the liquid-gas interface, inducing electroluminescence within the bubble. The resulting photons are detected with a Hamamatsu VUV4 quad-SiPM array - providing the deposited energy with a charge-only RMS resolution of 6.6%. The image…
The potential of photon detectors to achieve precise timing information is of increasing importance in many domains, PET and CT scanners in medical imaging and particle physics detectors, amongst others. The goal to increase by an order of magnitude the sensitivity of PET scanners and to deliver, via time-of-flight (TOF), true space points for each event, as well as the constraints set by future particle accelerators require a further leap in time resolution of scintillator-based ionizing radiation detectors, reaching eventually a few picoseconds resolution for sub MeV energy deposits. In spit…
We have developed a dedicated front-end-electronics board for a high-pressure xenon gas time projection chamber for a neutrinoless double-beta decay search. The ionization signal is readout by detecting electroluminescence photons with SiPM's. The board readout the signal from 56~SiPM's through the DC-coupling and record the waveforms at 5 MS/s with a wide dynamic range up to 7,000 photons/200 ns. The SiPM bias voltages are provided by the board and can be adjusted for each SiPM. In order to calibrate and monitor the SiPM gain, additional auxiliary ADC measures 1 photon-equivalent dark current…
A new timing detector measuring ~50 MeV/c positrons is under development for the MEG II experiment, aiming at a time resolution $σ_t \sim 30~\mathrm{ps}$. The resolution is expected to be achieved by measuring each positron time with multiple counters made of plastic scintillator readout by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the time resolution for ~50 MeV/c positrons using prototype counters. Counters with dimensions of $90\times 40\times 5~\mathrm{mm}^3$ readout by six SiPMs (three on each $40\times 5~\mathrm{mm}^2$ plane) were built with SiPMs from …

Firstly, six SiPMs were equally irradiated with electrons from $^{90}$Sr sources up to a fluence of $Φ_\mathrm{e^-}\approx 3 \times 10^…

The application of silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) technology for weak-light detection at a single photon level has expanded thanks to its better photon detection efficiency in comparison to a conventional photomultiplier tube (PMT). SiPMs with large detection area have recently become commercially available, enabling applications where the photon flux is low both temporarily and spatially. On the other hand, several drawbacks exist in the usage of SiPMs such as a higher dark count rate, many readout channels, slow response time, and optical crosstalk; therefore, users need to carefully conside…
In this paper we discuss a general approach to use SiPMs in different electrical configurations in combination with numerous scintillator materials for applications in nuclear instrumentation, such as calorimetry and timing. The "hybrid" configuration used in the PANDA detector was found to show the fastest timing properties with several hundred pico second response by combining the advantages of a large active area while avoiding high operation voltages and dark noise. A "parallel" configuration shows the largest light collection efficiency and is therefore suitable for energy measurements. S…
For the first time secondary scintillation, generated within the holes of a thick gas electron multiplier (TGEM) immersed in liquid argon, has been observed and measured using a silicon photomultiplier device (SiPM). 250 electron-ion pairs, generated in liquid argon via the interaction of a 5.9KeV Fe-55 gamma source, were drifted under the influence of a 2.5KV/cm field towards a 1.5mm thickness TGEM, the local field sufficiently high to generate secondary scintillation light within the liquid as the charge traversed the central region of the TGEM hole. The resulting VUV light was incident on a…
Liquid argon is used as a target material in several current and planned experiments related to dark matter direct searching and neutrino detection. SiPM is becoming the standard for scintillator detectors because of its advantages over traditional PMT. In this paper, we developed a single-phase liquid argon detector using eight 1 $\times$1 inch$^2$ Hamamatsu S14161-6050HS 4$\times$4 SiPM arrays. The directly measured light yield is 25.7 $\pm$ 1.6 photo-electrons per keV, which corresponds to 12.8 $\pm$ 0.8 photo-electrons primarily generated by the argon scintillation. The rest is contributed…
A prototype of a position sensitive photo-detector with 5.6 x 5.6 cm2 detection area readout with 64 Hamamatsu MPPCs (S10931-100P) with 3 x 3 mm2 active area each has been built and tested. The photo-sensors are arranged in a 8 x 8 array with a quadratic mirror light guide on top. The module is currently readout by in-house developed preamplifier boards but employing existing ASIC chips optimized for SiPM readout is also planned. Such a device is one of the candidates to be used for photon detection in the PANDA DIRC detectors.
A 3-D position sensitive neutron detector is being developed based on a plastic scintillator array. In this work we investigate and compare two different approaches for the determination of the main $γ$-ray hit location. On one hand, methods based on the fit of an analytical model for the scintillation light distribution p…
