We give a definition of a coherent adjunction in a $4$-category consisting of a finite list of $k$-morphisms for $k\leq 4$, plus equations beetween $4$-morphisms. We prove that the restriction map from the space of coherent adjunctions in a $4$-category to the space of $1$-morphisms which admit an adjoint is a trivial fibration. We prove that other restriction maps related to fixing parts of the data of an adjunction are also trivial fibrations. We give a conjectural description of a coherent adjunction in an $n$-category.
We prove that there is an adjunction between what we call étale topological categories and restriction quantal frames that leads to an adjunction with a category of complete restriction monoids. This generalizes the adjunction between étale groupoids and pseudogroups.
In this paper we investigate the categories of braided objects, algebras and bialgebras in a given monoidal category, some pairs of adjoint functors between them and their relations. In particular we construct a braided primitive functor and its left adjoint, the braided tensor bialgebra functor, from the category of braided objects to the one of braided bialgebras. The latter is obtained by a specific elaborated construction introducing a braided tensor algebra functor as a left adjoint of the forgetful functor from the category of braided algebras to the one of braided objects. The behaviour…
In this paper we explain the relationship between Frobenius objects in monoidal categories and adjunctions in 2-categories. In particular, we show that every Frobenius object in a monoidal category M arises from an ambijunction (simultaneous left and right adjoints) in some 2-category D into which M fully and faithfully embeds. Since a 2D topological quantum field theory is equivalent to a commutative Frobenius algebra, this result also shows that every 2D TQFT is obtained from an ambijunction in some 2-category. Our theorem is proved by extending the theory of adjoint monads to the context of…
Generalizing the approach to pseudo monoidal DG-categories as certain colored non-symmetric DG-operads, we introduce a certain relaxed notion of a category enriched in DG-categories. We construct model structures on the category of colored non-symmetric DG-operads and on the category of DGCat-enriched categories with a fixed set of objects. This allows us to talk about strong homotopy maps in both settings. We discuss the notion of a strong homotopy monad in a DG-category and a notion of strong homotopy adjunction data for two DG-functors.
In this article Hopf parametric adjunctions are defined and analysed within the context of the 2-adjunction of the type $\mathbf{Adj}$-$\mathbf{Mnd}$. In order to do so, the definition of adjoint objects in the 2-category of adjunctions and in the 2-category of monads for $Cat$ are revised and characterized. This article finalises with the application of the obtained results on current categorical characterization of Hopf Monads.
This dissertation is devoted to a study of adjunctions concerning categories enriched over a quantaloid Q (or Q-categories for short), with the following types of adjunctions involved: (1) adjoint functors between Q-categories; (2) adjoint distributors between Q-categories; (3) adjoint functors between categories consisting of Q-categories. For a small quantaloid Q and a distributor between Q-categories, two adjunctions between the Q-categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves are presented. These adjunctions respectively extend the fundamental construction of Isbell adjunctions and K…
We characterize the category of Sambin's positive topologies as a fibration over the category of locales Loc. The fibration is obtained by applying the Grothendieck construction to a doctrine over Loc. We then construct an adjunction between the category of positive topologies and that of topological spaces Top, and show that the well-known adjunction between Top and Loc factors through the newly constructed adjunction.
We characterize double adjunctions in terms of presheaves and universal squares, and then apply these characterizations to free monads and Eilenberg--Moore objects in double categories. We improve upon our earlier result in "Monads in Double Categories", JPAA 215:6, pages 1174-1197, 2011, to conclude: if a double category with cofolding admits the construction of free monads in its horizontal 2-category, then it also admits the construction of free monads as a double category. We also prove that a double category admits Eilenberg--Moore objects if and only if a certain parameterized presheaf i…
We introduce, comment and develop the Scott adjunction, mostly from the point of view of a category theorist. Besides its technical and conceptual aspects, in a nutshell we provide a categorification of the Scott topology over a posets with directed suprema. From a technical point of view we establish an adjunction between accessible categories with directed colimits and Grothendieck topoi. We show that the bicategory of topoi is enriched over the $2$-category of accessible categories with directed colimits and it has tensors with respect to this enrichment. The Scott adjunction (ri-)emerges n…
We explain two related constructions on the data of two monoidal symmetric closed categories $\mathscr{A}$ and $\mathscr{E}$ and monoidal functors $F: \mathscr{E}\to \mathscr{A}$ and $G: \mathscr{A}\to \mathscr{E}$. In a first part, we recall and partly extend work of A. Kock: In case $F$ is left-adjoint to $G$, and this adjunction is monoidal, we can equip the Eilenberg-Moore category $\mathscr{E}^T$ for $T$ being the canonical monad associated to the adjunction, with the structure of symmetric monoidal closed category, provided $\mathscr{E}$ has equalizers and $\mathscr{E}^T$ co-equalizers. …
We consider the décalage construction $\operatorname{Dec}$ and its right adjoint $T$. These functors are induced on the category of simplicial objects valued in any bicomplete category $\mathcal{C}$ by the ordinal sum. We identify $T \operatorname{Dec}X$ with the path object $X^{Δ[1]}$ for any simplicial object $X$. We then use this formula to produce an explicit retracting homotopy for the unit $X\to T\operatorname{Dec}X$ of the adjunction $(\operatorname{Dec},T)$. When $\mathcal{C}$ is a category of objects of an algebraic nature, we then show that the unit is a weak equivalence of simplicia…
Let V be a cofibrantly generated monoidal model category and let M be a monoidal V-model category. Given a cofibrant C-coloured operad P in V, we give sufficient conditions for the fibrant replacement and cofibrant replacement functors in M^C to preserve P-algebra structures. In particular, we show how P-algebra structures can be transferred along derived Quillen adjunctions of monoidal V-model categories, and we apply this result to the Quillen adjunctions defined by enriched Bousfield localizations and colocalizations on M. As an application, we prove that in the category of symmetric spectr…
Given a DG-category A we introduce the bar category of modules Modbar(A). It is a DG-enhancement of the derived category D(A) of A which is isomorphic to the category of DG A-modules with A-infinity morphisms between them. However, it is defined intrinsically in the language of DG-categories and requires no complex machinery or sign conventions of A-infinity categories. We define for these bar categories Tensor and Hom bifunctors, dualisation functors, and a convolution of twisted complexes. The intended application is to working with DG-bimodules as enhancements of exact functors between tria…
We use the general notion of 2-dimensional adjunction with given coherence equations as introduced by MacDonald-Stone, building on earlier work by Gray, to derive coherence equations for a general 2-monad, which we refer to as a lax-Gray monad. The free lax-Gray 2-monad on one object may be regarded as the suspension of a lax 2-dimensional analogue of the simplicial category Delta. We call this analogue Delta LG for lax-Gray Delta. This is analogous to the way that the free 1-monad Mnd (as presented in Schanuel-Street) is a concrete example of the suspension of the simplicial category Delta, d…
In this article, the author analyses distributive and mixed distributive laws and some of their equivalences through the use of 2-adjunctions of the type $\Adj$-$\Mnd$. As far as the distributive laws are concerned, the equivalence between this structures and monads objects in the 2-category $\Adj_{\R}(Cat)$ is analysed, where these monad objects will correspond to liftings to the category of algebras of Eilenberg-Moore. Second, the equivalence between these structures and a pair consisting of a Eilenberg-Moore lifting and a Kleisli extension is analysed too, according to E. Manes and P. Mulry…
We define Hopf monads on an arbitrary monoidal category, extending the definition given previously for monoidal categories with duals. A Hopf monad is a bimonad (or opmonoidal monad) whose fusion operators are invertible. This definition can be formulated in terms of Hopf adjunctions, which are comonoidal adjunctions with an invertibility condition. On a monoidal category with internal Homs, a Hopf monad is a bimonad admitting a left and a right antipode. Hopf monads generalize Hopf algebras to the non-braided setting. They also generalize Hopf algebroids (which are linear Hopf monads on a cat…
Category theory has foundational importance because it provides conceptual lenses to characterize what is important and universal in mathematics---with adjunctions being the primary lense. If adjunctions are so important in mathematics, then perhaps they will isolate concepts of some importance in the empirical sciences. But the applications of adjunctions have been hampered by an overly restrictive formulation that avoids heteromorphisms or hets. By reformulating an adjunction using hets, it is split into two parts, a left and a right semiadjunction (or half-adjunuction). Semiadjunctions (ess…
The contributions of this paper are twofold. Within the framework of Grothendieck's fibrational category theory, we present a web of fundamental 2-adjunctions surrounding the formation of the category of all small diagrams in a given category and the formation of the Grothendieck category of a functor into the category of small categories. We demonstrate the utility of these adjunctions, in part by deriving three formulae for (co-)limits: a `twisted' generalization of the well-known Fubini formula, as first established by Chachólski and Scherer; a new `general colimit decomposition formula'; a…
Using a suitable notion of principal G-bundle, defined relative to an arbitrary cartesian category, it is shown that principal bundles can be characterised as adjunctions that stably satisfy Frobenius reciprocity. The result extends from G, an internal group, to G an internal groupoid. Since geometric morphisms can be described as certain adjunctions that are stably Frobenius, as an application it is proved that all geometric morphisms, from a localic topos to a bounded topos, can be characterised as principal bundles.
It is well established that equational algebraic theories, and the monads they generate, can be used to encode computational effects. An important insight of Power and Shkaravska is that comodels of an algebraic theory T -- i.e., models in the opposite category Set^op -- provide a suitable environment for evaluating the computational effects encoded by T. As already noted by Power and Shkaravska, taking comodels yields a functor from accessible monads to accessible comonads on Set. In this paper, we show that this functor is part of an adjunction -- the "costructure-cosemantics adjunction" of …
The subject of this paper is the higher structure of the strictification adjunction, which relates the two fundamental bases of three-dimensional category theory: the $\mathbf{Gray}$-category of $2$-categories and the tricategory of bicategories. We show that -- far from requiring the full weakness provided by the definitions of tricategory theory -- this adjunction can be $\textit{strictly}$ enriched over the symmetric closed multicategory of bicategories defined by Verity. Moreover, we show that this adjunction underlies an adjunction of bicategory-enriched symmetric multicategories. An appe…
Hilsum-Skandalis maps, from differential geometry, are studied in the context of a cartesian category. It is shown that Hilsum-Skandalis maps can be represented as stably Frobenius adjunctions. This leads to a new and more general proof that Hilsum-Skandalis maps represent a universal way of inverting essential equivalences between internal groupoids. To prove the representation theorem, a new characterisation of the con- nected components adjunction of any internal groupoid is given. The charaterisation is that the adjunction is covered by a stable Frobenius adjunction that is a slice and who…
Our work over the past years shows that not only the collection of (for instance) all topological spaces gives rise to a category, but also each topological space can be seen individually as a category by interpreting the convergence relation $\mathfrak{x}\to x$ between ultrafilters and points of a topological space $X$ as arrows in $X$. Naturally, this point of view opens the door to the use of concepts and ideas from (enriched) Category Theory for the investigation of (for instance) topological spaces. In this paper we study cocompleteness, adjoint functors and Kan extensions in the context …
Given two small dg categories $C,D$, defined over a field, we introduce their (non-symmetric) twisted tensor product $C\overset{\sim}{\otimes} D$. We show that $-\overset{\sim}{\otimes} D$ is left adjoint to the functor $Coh(D,-)$, where $Coh(D,E)$ is the dg category of dg functors $D\to E$ and their coherent natural transformations. This adjunction holds in the category of small dg categories (not in the homotopy category of dg categories $\mathrm{Hot}$). We show that for $C,D$ cofibrant, the adjunction descends to the corresponding adjunction in the homotopy category. Then comparison with a …
In fairly elementary terms this paper presents, and expands upon, a recent result by Garner by which the notion of topologicity of a concrete functor is subsumed under the concept of total cocompleteness of enriched category theory. Motivated by some key results of the 1970s, the paper develops all needed ingredients from the theory of quantaloids in order to place essential results of categorical topology into the context of quantaloid-enriched category theory, a field that previously drew its motivation and applications from other domains, such as quantum logic and sheaf theory.
We extend the basic concepts of Street's formal theory of monads from the setting of 2-categories to that of double categories. In particular, we introduce the double category Mnd(C) of monads in a double category C and define what it means for a double category to admit the construction of free monads. Our main theorem shows that, under some mild conditions, a double category that is a framed bicategory admits the construction of free monads if its horizontal 2-category does. We apply this result to obtain double adjunctions which extend the adjunction between graphs and categories and the ad…
We give another proof of the fact that there is a dual equivalence between the $\infty$-category of monoidal $\infty$-categories with left adjoint oplax monoidal functors and that with right adjoint lax monoidal functors by constructing a perfect pairing between them.
Recently, Dotsenko and Tamaroff have shown that a morphism of $T\longrightarrow S$ of monads over a category $\mathscr C$ satisfies the PBW-property if and only if it makes $S$ into a free right $T$-module. We consider an adjunction $Ψ=(G,F)$ between categories $\mathscr C$, $\mathscr D$, a monad $S$ on $\mathscr C$ and a monad $T$ on $\mathscr D$. We show that a morphism $ϕ:(\mathscr C,S)\longrightarrow (\mathscr D,T)$ that is well behaved with respect to the adjunction $Ψ$ has a PBW-property if and only if it makes $S$ satisfy a certain freeness condition with respect to $T$-modules with val…
We show how to "interleave" the monad for operads and the monad for contractions on the category \coll of collections, to construct the monad for the operads-with-contraction of Leinster. We first decompose the adjunction for operads and the adjunction for contractions into a chain of adjunctions each of which acts on only one dimension of the underlying globular sets at a time. We then exhibit mutual stability conditions that enable us to alternate the dimension-by-dimension free functors. Hence we give an explicit construction of a left adjoint for the forgetful functor $\owc \lra \coll$, fr…
We prove that the category of dg-coalgebras is symmetric monoidal closed and that the category of dg-algebras is enriched, tensored, cotensored and strongly monoidal over that of coalgebras. We apply this formalism to reconstruct several known adjunctions, notably the bar-cobar adjunction.
In this paper, we introduce a cofibrant simplicial category that we call the free homotopy coherent adjunction and characterize its n-arrows using a graphical calculus that we develop here. The hom-spaces are appropriately fibrant, indeed are nerves of categories, which indicates that all of the expected coherence equations in each dimension are present. To justify our terminology, we prove that any adjunction of quasi-categories extends to a homotopy coherent adjunction and furthermore that these extensions are homotopically unique in the sense that the relevant spaces of extensions are contr…
Given an adjoint pair of functors $F,G$, the composite $GF$ naturally gets the structure of a monad. The same monad may arise from many such adjoint pairs of functors, however. Can one describe all of the adjunctions giving rise to a given monad? In this paper we single out a class of adjunctions with especially good properties, and we develop methods for computing all such adjunctions, up to natural equivalence, which give rise to a given monad. To demonstrate these methods, we explicitly compute the finitary homological presentations of the free $A$-module monad on the category of sets, for …
We present new data structures for quasistrict higher categories, in which associativity and unit laws hold strictly. Our approach has low axiomatic complexity compared to traditional algebraic definitions of higher categories, and we use it to give a practical definition of quasistrict 4-category. It is also amenable to computer implementation, and we exploit this to give a new machine-verified algebraic proof that every adjunction of 1-cells in a quasistrict 4-category can be promoted to a coherent adjunction satisfying the butterfly equations.
We introduce and investigate a category-theoretic abstraction of the standard "system-solution" adjunction in affine algebraic geometry. We then look further into these geometric adjunctions at different levels of generality, from syntactic categories to (possibly infinitary) equational classes of algebras. In doing so, we discuss the relationships between the dualities induced by our framework and the well-established theory of concrete dual adjunctions. In the context of general algebra we prove an analogue of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, thereby achieving a complete characterisation of the fi…
For any site of definition $\mathcal C$ of a Grothendieck topos $\mathcal E$, we define a notion of a $\mathcal C$-ary Lawvere theory $τ: \mathscr C \to \mathscr T$ whose category of models is a stack over $\mathcal E$. Our definitions coincide with Lawvere's finitary theories when $\mathcal C=\aleph_0$ and $\mathcal E = \operatorname{\mathbf {Set}}$. We construct a fibered category $\operatorname{\mathbf {Mod}}^{\mathscr T}$ of models as a stack over $\mathcal E$ and prove that it is $\mathcal E$-complete and $\mathcal E$-cocomplete. We show that there is a free-forget adjunction $F \dashv U:…
In this work, we describe an adjunction between the comma category of SET-based monads under the V-powerset monad and the category of associative lax extensions of SET-based monads to the category of V-relations. In the process, we give a general construction of the Kleisli extension of a monad to the category of V-relations.
This second part comes to the construction of the spectrum associated to a situation of multi-adjunction. Exploiting a geometric understanding of its multi-versal property, the spectrum of an object is obtained as the spaces of local units equipped with a topology provided by orthogonality aspects. After recalling Diers original construction, this paper introduces new material. First we explain how the situation of multi-adjunction can be corrected in a situation of adjunction between categories of modeled spaces as in the topos-theoretic approach. Then we come to the 2-functorial aspects of t…
Given a representation of a C*-algebra, thought of as an abstract collection of physical observables, together with a unit vector, one obtains a state on the algebra via restriction. We show that the Gelfand-Naimark-Segal (GNS) construction furnishes a left adjoint of this restriction. To properly formulate this adjoint, it must be viewed as a weak natural transformation, a 1-morphism in a suitable 2-category, rather than as a functor between categories. Weak naturality encodes the functoriality and the universal property of adjunctions encodes the characterizing features of the GNS constructi…
