Our work over the past years shows that not only the collection of (for instance) all topological spaces gives rise to a category, but also each topological space can be seen individually as a category by interpreting the convergence relation $\mathfrak{x}\to x$ between ultrafilters and points of a topological space $X$ as arrows in $X$. Naturally, this point of view opens the door to the use of concepts and ideas from (enriched) Category Theory for the investigation of (for instance) topological spaces. In this paper we study cocompleteness, adjoint functors and Kan extensions in the context of topological theories. We show that the cocomplete spaces are precisely the injective spaces, and they are algebras for a suitable monad on $\SET$. This way we obtain enriched versions of known results about injective topological spaces and continuous lattices.
In this communication we generalize some recent results of Rump to categories enriched in a commutative quantale V. Using these results, we show that every quantale-enriched multicategory admits an injective hull. Finally, we expose a connection between the Isbell adjunction and the construction of injective hulls for topological spaces made by Banaschewski in 1973.
In the enriched setting, the notions of injective and projective model structures on a category of enriched diagrams also make sense. In this paper, we prove the existence of these model structures on enriched diagram categories under local presentability, accessibility, and "acyclicity" conditions, using the methods of lifting model structures from an adjunction introduced by Garner, Hess, Kedziorek, Riehl, and Shipley.
Notions and techniques of enriched category theory can be used to study topological structures, like metric spaces, topological spaces and approach spaces, in the context of topological theories. Recently in [D. Hofmann, Injective spaces via adjunction, arXiv:0804.0326 [math.CV]] the construction of a Yoneda embedding allowed to identify injectivity of spaces as cocompleteness and to show monadicity of the category of injective spaces and left adjoints over $\mathsf{Set}$. In this paper we generalise these results, studying cocompleteness with respect to a given class of distributors. We show …
We categorify the adjunction between locales and topological spaces, this amounts to an adjunction between (generalized) bounded ionads and topoi. We show that the adjunction is idempotent. We relate this adjunction to the Scott adjunction, which was discussed from a more categorical point of view in [Liba]. We hint that $0$-dimensional adjunction inhabits the categorified one.
We characterize the category of Sambin's positive topologies as a fibration over the category of locales Loc. The fibration is obtained by applying the Grothendieck construction to a doctrine over Loc. We then construct an adjunction between the category of positive topologies and that of topological spaces Top, and show that the well-known adjunction between Top and Loc factors through the newly constructed adjunction.
This chapter uses categorical techniques to describe relations between various sets of operators on a Hilbert space, such as self-adjoint, positive, density, effect and projection operators. These relations, including various Hilbert-Schmidt isomorphisms of the form tr(A-), are expressed in terms of dual adjunctions, and maps between them. Of particular interest is the connection with quantum structures, via a dual adjunction between convex sets and effect modules. The approach systematically uses categories of modules, via their description as Eilenberg-Moore algebras of a monad.
In the same way decomposition spaces, also known as unital 2-Segal spaces, have incidence (co)algebras, and certain relative decomposition spaces have incidence (co)modules, we identify the structures that have incidence bi(co)modules: they are certain augmented double Segal spaces subject to some exactness conditions. We establish a Möbius inversion principle for (co)modules, and a Rota formula for certain more involved structures called Möbius bicomodule configurations. The most important instance of the latter notion arises as mapping cylinders of infinity adjunctions, or more generally of …
In this article we introduce the concept of limit space and fundamental limit space for the so-called closed injected systems of topological spaces. We present the main results on existence and uniqueness of limit spaces and several concrete examples. In the main section of the text, we show that the closed injective system can be considered as objects of a category whose morphisms are the so-called cis-morphisms. Moreover, the transition to fundamental limit space can be considered a functor from this category into category of topological spaces. Later, we show results about properties on fun…
In 1972, Dana Scott proved a fundamental result on the connection between order and topology which says that injective $T_0$ spaces are precisely continuous lattices endowed with Scott topology. This paper investigates whether this is true in an enriched context, where the enrichment is the quantale obtained by equipping the interval $[0,1]$ with a continuous t-norm. It is shown that for each continuous t-norm, the specialization $[0,1]$-order of a separated and injective $[0,1]$-approach space $X$ is a continuous $[0,1]$-lattice and the $[0,1]$-approach structure of $X$ coincides with the Sco…
We prove versions of the spectral adjunction, a Stone-type duality and Hofmann-Lawson duality for locally small spaces with bounded continuous mappings.
This dissertation is devoted to a study of adjunctions concerning categories enriched over a quantaloid Q (or Q-categories for short), with the following types of adjunctions involved: (1) adjoint functors between Q-categories; (2) adjoint distributors between Q-categories; (3) adjoint functors between categories consisting of Q-categories. For a small quantaloid Q and a distributor between Q-categories, two adjunctions between the Q-categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves are presented. These adjunctions respectively extend the fundamental construction of Isbell adjunctions and K…
Given a representation of a C*-algebra, thought of as an abstract collection of physical observables, together with a unit vector, one obtains a state on the algebra via restriction. We show that the Gelfand-Naimark-Segal (GNS) construction furnishes a left adjoint of this restriction. To properly formulate this adjoint, it must be viewed as a weak natural transformation, a 1-morphism in a suitable 2-category, rather than as a functor between categories. Weak naturality encodes the functoriality and the universal property of adjunctions encodes the characterizing features of the GNS constructi…
In this paper, we introduce a cofibrant simplicial category that we call the free homotopy coherent adjunction and characterize its n-arrows using a graphical calculus that we develop here. The hom-spaces are appropriately fibrant, indeed are nerves of categories, which indicates that all of the expected coherence equations in each dimension are present. To justify our terminology, we prove that any adjunction of quasi-categories extends to a homotopy coherent adjunction and furthermore that these extensions are homotopically unique in the sense that the relevant spaces of extensions are contr…
Every principal G-bundle is classified up to equivalence by a homotopy class of maps into the classifying space of G. On the other hand, for every nice topological space Milnor constructed a strict model of loop space, that is a group. Moreover the morphisms of topological groups defined on the loop space of X generate all the bundles over X up to equivalence. In this paper, we show that the relationship between Milnor's loop space and the classifying space functor is, in a precise sense, an adjoint pair between based spaces and topological groups in a homotopical context. This proof leads to …
The notion of sobriety is extended to the realm of topological spaces valued in a commutative and unital quantale, via an adjunction between a category of quantale modules and the category of quantale-valued topological spaces. Relations between such sober spaces and quantale-valued domains based on flat ideals are investigated.
The notion of Scott distance between points and subsets in a metric space, a metric analogy of the Scott topology on an ordered set, is introduced, making a metric space into an approach space. Basic properties of Scott distance are investigated, including its topological coreflection and its relation to injective $T_0$ approach spaces. It is proved that the topological coreflection of the Scott distance is sandwiched between the $d$-Scott topology and the generalized Scott topology; and that every injective $T_0$ approach space is a cocomplete and continuous metric space equipped with its Sco…
This second part comes to the construction of the spectrum associated to a situation of multi-adjunction. Exploiting a geometric understanding of its multi-versal property, the spectrum of an object is obtained as the spaces of local units equipped with a topology provided by orthogonality aspects. After recalling Diers original construction, this paper introduces new material. First we explain how the situation of multi-adjunction can be corrected in a situation of adjunction between categories of modeled spaces as in the topos-theoretic approach. Then we come to the 2-functorial aspects of t…
We prove an abstract Fubini-type theorem in the context of monoidal and enriched category theory, and as a corollary we establish a Fubini theorem for integrals on arbitrary convergence spaces that generalizes (and entails) the classical Fubini theorem for Radon measures on compact Hausdorff spaces. Given a symmetric monoidal closed adjunction satisfying certain hypotheses, we show that an associated monad of natural distributions D is commutative. Applying this result to the monoidal adjunction between convergence spaces and convergence vector spaces, the commutativity of D amounts to a Fubin…
The injective spectrum is a topological space associated to a ring $R$, which agrees with the Zariski spectrum when $R$ is commutative noetherian. We consider injective spectra of right noetherian rings (and locally noetherian Grothendieck categories) and establish some basic topological results and a functoriality result, as well as links between the topology and the Krull dimension of the ring (in the sense of Gabriel and Rentschler). Finally, we use these results to compute a number of examples.
We present a purely category-theoretic characterization of retracts of Fraïssé limits. For this aim, we consider a natural version of injectivity with respect to a pair of categories (a category and its subcategory). It turns out that retracts of Fraïssé limits are precisely the objects that are injective relatively to such a pair. One of the applications is a characterization of non-expansive retracts of Urysohn's universal metric space.
This paper describes how the structure of the state space of the quantum harmonic oscillator can be described by an adjunction of categories, that encodes the raising and lowering operators into a commutative comonoid. The formulation is an entirely general one in which Hilbert spaces play no special role. Generalised coherent states arise through the hom-set isomorphisms defining the adjunction, and we prove that they are eigenstates of the lowering operators. Surprisingly, generalised exponentials also emerge naturally in this setting, and we demonstrate that coherent states are produced by …
For any site of definition $\mathcal C$ of a Grothendieck topos $\mathcal E$, we define a notion of a $\mathcal C$-ary Lawvere theory $τ: \mathscr C \to \mathscr T$ whose category of models is a stack over $\mathcal E$. Our definitions coincide with Lawvere's finitary theories when $\mathcal C=\aleph_0$ and $\mathcal E = \operatorname{\mathbf {Set}}$. We construct a fibered category $\operatorname{\mathbf {Mod}}^{\mathscr T}$ of models as a stack over $\mathcal E$ and prove that it is $\mathcal E$-complete and $\mathcal E$-cocomplete. We show that there is a free-forget adjunction $F \dashv U:…
