An identifying code $C$ of a graph $G$ is a dominating set of $G$ such that any two distinct vertices of $G$ have distinct closed neighbourhoods within $C$. The smallest size of an identifying code of $G$ is denoted $γ^{\text{ID}}(G)$. When every vertex of $G$ also has a neighbour in $C$, it is said to be a total dominating identifying code of $G$, and the smallest size of a total dominating identifying code of $G$ is denoted by $γ_t^{\text{ID}}(G)$.
Extending similar characterizations for identifying codes from the literature, we characterize those graphs $G$ of order $n$ with $γ_t^{\text{ID}}(G)=n$ (the only such connected graph is $P_3$) and $γ_t^{\text{ID}}(G)=n-1$ (such graphs either satisfy $γ^{\text{ID}}(G)=n-1$ or are built from certain such graphs by adding a set of universal vertices, to each of which a private leaf is attached).
Then, using bounds from the literature, we remark that any (open and closed) twin-free tree of order $n$ has a total dominating identifying code of size at most $\frac{3n}{4}$. This bound is tight, and we characterize the trees reaching it. Moreover, by a new proof, we show that this bound actually holds for the larger class of all twin-free graphs of girth at least 5. The cycle $C_8$ also attains this bound. We also provide a generalized bound for all graphs of girth at least 5 (possibly with twins).
Finally, we relate $γ_t^{\text{ID}}(G)$ to the related parameter $γ^{\text{ID}}(G)$ as well as the location-domination number of $G$ and its variants, providing bounds that are either tight or almost tight.

This papers focuses on the average order of dominating sets of a graph. We find the extremal graphs for the maximum and minimum value over all graphs on $n$ vertices, while for trees we prove that the star minimizes the average order of dominating sets. We prove the average order of dominating sets in graphs without isolated vertices is at most $3n/4$, but provide evidence that the actual upper bound is $2n/3$. Finally, we show that the normalized average, while dense in $[1/2,1]$, tends to $\frac{1}{2}$ for almost all graphs.
An open neighbourhood locating-dominating set is a set $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ such that each vertex of $G$ has a neighbour in $S$, and for any two vertices $u,v$ of $G$, there is at least one vertex in $S$ that is a neighbour of exactly one of $u$ and $v$. We characterize those graphs whose only open neighbourhood locating-dominating set is the whole set of vertices. More precisely, we prove that these graphs are exactly the graphs all whose connected components are half-graphs (a half-graph is a special bipartite graph with both parts of the same size, where each part can be ordered s…
A dominating set of a graph $G$ is a set of vertices $D$ such that for all $v \in V(G)$, either $v \in D$ or $(v,d) \in E(G)$ for some $d \in D$. The cardinality redundance of a vertex set $S$, $CR(S)$, is the number of vertices in $V(G)$ such that $|N[x] \cap S| \geq 2$. The cardinality redundance of $G$ is the minimum of $CR(S)$ taken over all dominating sets $S$. A set that achieves $CR(G)$ is a $γ_{cr}$-set, and the size of the minimum $γ_{cr}$-set is $γ_{cr}(G)$. We give the maximum number of edges in a graph with a given number of vertices and given cardinality redundance. In the cases t…
In this paper we study the the average order of dominating sets in a graph, $\operatorname{avd}(G)$. Like other average graph parameters, the extremal graphs are of interest. Beaton and Brown (2021) conjectured that for all graphs $G$ of order $n$ without isolated vertices, $\operatorname{avd}(G) \leq 2n/3$. Recently, Erey (2021) proved the conjecture for forests without isolated vertices. In this paper we prove the conjecture and classify which graphs have $\operatorname{avd}(G) = 2n/3$. We also use our bounds to prove the average version of Vizing's Conjecture.
Identifying and locating-dominating codes have been studied widely in circulant graphs of type $C_n(1,2,3,\dots, r)$ over the recent years. In 2013, Ghebleh and Niepel studied locating-dominating and identifying codes in the circulant graphs $C_n(1,d)$ for $d=3$ and proposed as an open question the case of $d > 3$. In this paper we study identifying, locating-dominating and self-identifying codes in the graphs $C_n(1,d)$, $C_n(1,d-1,d)$ and $C_n(1,d-1,d,d+1)$. We give a new method to study lower bounds for these three codes in the circulant graphs using suitable grids. Moreover, we show that t…
A set $D$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a total dominating set if every vertex of $G$ is adjacent to at least one vertex of $D$. The total domination number of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of any total dominating set of $G$ and is denoted by $γ_t(G)$. The total dominating set $D$ is called a total co-independent dominating set if $V(G)\setminus D$ is an independent set and has at least one vertex. The minimum cardinality of any total co-independent dominating set is denoted by $γ_{t,coi}(G)$. In this paper, we show that, for any tree $T$ of order $n$ and diameter at least three, $n-β(T)\leq …
We prove the extremal function for $K_9^=$ minors, where $K_9^=$ denotes the complete graph $K_9$ with two edges removed. In particular, we show that any graph with $n$ vertices and at least $6n - 20$ edges either contains a $K_9^=$ minor or is isomorphic to a graph obtained from disjoint copies of $K_8$ and $K_{2, 2, 2, 2, 2}$ by identifying cliques of size 5. We utilize computer assistance to prove one of our lemmas.
A power dominating set of a graph is a set of vertices that observes every vertex in the graph by combining classical domination with an iterative propagation process arising from electrical circuit theory. In this paper, we study the power domination polynomial of a graph $G$ of order $n$, defined as $\mathcal{P}(G;x)=\sum_{i=1}^n p(G;i) x^i$, where $p(G;i)$ is the number of power dominating sets of $G$ of size $i$. We relate the power domination polynomial to other graph polynomials, present structural and extremal results about its roots and coefficients, and identify some graph parameters …
Given an integer $\ell\ge 1$, a $(1,\le \ell)$-identifying code in a digraph is a dominating subset $C$ of vertices such that all distinct subsets of vertices of cardinality at most $\ell$ have distinct closed in-neighbourhood within $C$. In this paper, we prove that every $k$-iterated line digraph of minimum in-degree at least 2 and $k\geq2$, or minimum in-degree at least 3 and $k\geq1$, admits a $(1,\le \ell)$-identifying code with $\ell\leq2$, and in any case it does not admit a $(1,\le \ell)$-identifying code for $\ell\geq3$. Moreover, we find that the identifying number of a line digraph …
A subset $D$ of $V$ is \emph{dominating} in $G$ if every vertex of $V-D$ has at least one neighbour in $D;$ let $γ(G)$ be the minimum cardinality among all dominating sets in $G.$ A graph $G$ is $γ$-$q$-{\it critical} if the smallest subset of edges whose subdivision necessarily increases $γ(G)$ has cardinality $q.$ In this paper we consider mainly $γ$-$q$-critical trees and give some general properties of $gamma$-$q$-critical graphs. In particular, we show that if $T$ is a $γ$-$q$-critical tree, then $1 \leq q \leq n(T)-1$ and we characterize extremal trees when $q=n(T)-1.$ Since a subdivisio…

Identifying graphs with extremal properties is an extensively studied topic in spectral graph theory. In this paper, we study the log-concavity of a type of iteration sequence related to the $α$-normal weighted incidence matrices which is presented by Lu and Man for computing the spectral radius of hypergraphs. By using results obtained about the sequence and the method of some edge operations, we will characterize completely extremal k-graphs with the smallest spectral radius among bicyclic hypergraphs with given size.

Identifying codes in graphs have been widely studied since their introduction by Karpovsky, Chakrabarty and Levitin in 1998. In particular, there are a lot of results regarding the binary hypercubes, that is, the Hamming graphs $K_2^n$. In 2008, Gravier et al. started investigating identification in $K_q^2$. Goddard and Wash, in 2013, studied identifying codes in the general Hamming graphs $K_q^n$. They stated, for instance, that $γ^{ID}(K_q^n)\leq q^{n-1}$ for any $q$ and $n\geq3$. Moreover, they conjectured that $γ^{ID}(K_q^3)=q^2$. In this article, we show that $γ^{ID}(K_q^3)\leq q^2-q/4$ w…
An identifying code $C$ of a graph $G$ is a dominating set of $G$ such that any two distinct vertices of $G$ have distinct closed neighbourhoods within $C$. These codes have been widely studied for over two decades. We give an improvement over all the best known upper bounds, some of which have stood for over 20 years, for identifying codes in trees, proving the upper bound of $(n+\ell)/2$, where $n$ is the order and $\ell$ is the number of leaves (pendant vertices) of the graph. In addition to being an improvement in size, the new upper bound is also an improvement in generality, as it actual…
For a graph $G=(V(G),E(G))$, an Italian dominating function (ID function) $f:V(G)\rightarrow\{0,1,2\}$ has the property that for every vertex $v\in V(G)$ with $f(v)=0$, either $v$ is adjacent to a vertex assigned $2$ under $f$ or $v$ is adjacent to least two vertices assigned $1$ under $f$. The weight of an ID function is $\sum_{v\in V(G)}f(v)$. The Italian domination number is the minimum weight taken over all ID functions of $G$. In this paper, we initiate the study of a variant of ID functions. A restrained Italian dominating function (RID function) $f$ of $G$ is an ID function of $G$ for w…
