A subset $D$ of $V$ is \emph{dominating} in $G$ if every vertex of $V-D$ has at least one neighbour in $D;$ let $γ(G)$ be the minimum cardinality among all dominating sets in $G.$ A graph $G$ is $γ$-$q$-{\it critical} if the smallest subset of edges whose subdivision necessarily increases $γ(G)$ has cardinality $q.$ In this paper we consider mainly $γ$-$q$-critical trees and give some general properties of $gamma$-$q$-critical graphs. In particular, we show that if $T$ is a $γ$-$q$-critical tree, then $1 \leq q \leq n(T)-1$ and we characterize extremal trees when $q=n(T)-1.$ Since a subdivision number {of a tree $T$} ${\rm sd}(T)$ is always $1,2$ or $3,$ we also characterize $γ$-2-critical trees $T$ with ${\rm sd}(T)=2$ and $γ$-3-critical trees $T$ with ${\rm sd}(T)=3.$
We prove that every graph $G$ contains either $k$ edge-disjoint $K_4$-subdivisions or a set $X$ of at most $O(k^8 \log k)$ edges such that $G-X$ does not contain any $K_4$-subdivision. This shows that $K_4$-subdivisions have the edge-Erdős-Pósa property.
We show that for every graph $G$ and every graph $H$ obtained by subdividing each edge of $G$ at least $O(\log |V(G)|)$, $H$ is nonrepetitively 3-colorable. In fact, we show that $O(\log π'(G))$ subdivisions per edge are enough, where $π'(G)$ is the nonrepetitive chromatic index of $G$. This answers a question of Wood and improves a similar result of Pezarski and Zmarz that stated the existence of at least one 3-colorable division with a linear number of subdivision vertices per edge.
Adjacency polytopes, a.k.a. symmetric edge polytopes, associated with undirected graphs have been defined and studied in several seemingly independent areas including number theory, discrete geometry, and dynamical systems. In particular, the authors are motivated by the tropical intersections problem derived from the Kuramoto equations. Regular subdivisions of adjacency polytopes are instrumental in solving these problems. This paper explores connections between the regular subdivisions of an adjacency polytope and the contraction of the underlying graph along an edge. We construct a special …
For a finite Coxeter group, a subword complex is a simplicial complex associated with a pair (Q, π), where Q is a word in the alphabet of simple reflections, $π$ is a group element. We discuss the transformations of such a complex induced by braid moves of the word Q. We show that under certain conditions, this transformation is a composition of edge subdivisions and inverse edge subdivisions. In such a case, we describe how the H- and the γ-polynomials change under this operation. This case includes all braid moves for groups with simply-laced Coxeter diagrams.
The subdivision graph $S(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the graph obtained by inserting a new vertex into every edge of $G$. In $\cite{PL}$, two classes of new corona graphs, the corona-vertex of the subdivision graph $G_{1}\diamondsuit G_{2}$ and corona-edge of the subdivision graph $G_{1}\star G_{2}$ were defined. The adjacency spectrum and the signless Laplacian spectrum of the two new graphs were computed when $G_{1}$ is an arbitrary graph and $G_{2}$ is an $r$-regular graph. In this paper, we give the formulate of the resistance distance and the Kirchhoff index in $G_{1}\diamondsuit G_{2}$ and $G_…
An anagram is a word of the form $WP$ where $W$ is a non-empty word and $P$ is a permutation of $W$. A vertex colouring of a graph is anagram-free if no subpath of the graph is an anagram. Anagram-free graph colouring was independently introduced by Kamčev, Łuczak and Sudakov and ourselves. In this paper we introduce the study of anagram-free colourings of graph subdivisions. We show that every graph has an anagram-free $8$-colourable subdivision. The number of division vertices per edge is exponential in the number of edges. For trees, we construct anagram-free $10$-colourable subdivisions wi…
For any flag simplicial complex $Θ$ obtained by stellar subdividing the boundary of the cross polytope in edges, we define a flag simplicial complex $Γ(Θ)$ (dependent on the sequence of subdivisions) whose $f$-vector is the $γ$-vector of $Θ$. This proves that the $γ$-vector of any such simplicial complex satisfies the Frankl-Füredi-Kalai inequalities, partially solving a conjecture by Nevo and Petersen \cite{np}. We show that when $Θ$ is the dual simplicial complex to a nestohedron, and the sequence of subdivisions corresponds to a flag ordering as defined in \cite{ai}, that $Γ(Θ)$ is equal to…
We define a subdivision network $Γ^S$ of a given network $Γ,$ by inserting a new vertex in every edge, so that each edge is replaced by two new edges with conductances that fulfill electrical conditions on the new network. In this work, we firstly obtain an expression for the Green kernel of the subdivision network in terms of the Green kernel of the base network. Moreover, we also obtain the effective resistance and the Kirchhoff index of the subdivision network in terms of the corresponding parameters on the base network. Finally, as an example, we carry out the computations in the case of a…
Let $e$ be an edge of a connected simple graph $G$. The graph obtained by removing (subdividing) an edge $e$ from $G$ is denoted by $G-e$ ($G_e$). As usual, $γ(G)$ denotes the domination number of $G$. We call $G$ an SR-graph if $γ(G-e) = γ(G_e)$ for any edge $e$ of $G$, and $G$ is an ASR-graph if $γ(G - e) \neq (G_e)$ for any edge $e$ of $G$. In this work we give several examples of SR and ASR-graphs. Also, we characterize SR-trees and show that ASR-graphs are $γ$-insensitive.
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. The subdivision graph $\mathcal{S}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the graph obtained by inserting a new vertex into every edge of $G$. Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two vertex disjoint graphs. The subdivision-vertex neighbourhood corona of $G_1$ and $G_2$, denoted by $G_1 \boxdot G_2$, is the graph obtained from $\mathcal{S}(G_1)$ and $|V(G_1)|$ copies of $G_2$, all vertex disjoint, and joining the neighbours of the $i$th vertex of $V(G_1)$ to every vertex in the $i$th copy of $G_2$. The subdivision-edge neighbourhood corona of $G_1$ a…
A permutation graph is a cubic graph admitting a 1-factor M whose complement consists of two chordless cycles. Extending results of Ellingham and of Goldwasser and Zhang, we prove that if e is an edge of M such that every 4-cycle containing an edge of M contains e, then e is contained in a subdivision of the Petersen graph of a special type. In particular, if the graph is cyclically 5-edge-connected, then every edge of M is contained in such a subdivision. Our proof is based on a characterization of cographs in terms of twin vertices. We infer a linear lower bound on the number of Petersen sub…
In this paper, we introduce two new graph operations, namely, the subdivision vertex-edge neighbourhood vertex-corona and the subdivision vertex-edge neighbourhood edge-corona on graphs $G_1$, $G_2$ and $G_3$, and the resulting graphs are denoted by $G_1^S\bowtie (G_2^V\cup G_3^E)$ and $G_1^S\diamondsuit(G_2^V\cup G_3^E)$, respectively. Whereafter, the normalized Laplacian spectra of $G_1^S\bowtie (G_2^V\cup G_3^E)$ and $G_1^S\diamondsuit(G_2^V\cup G_3^E)$ are respectively determined in terms of the corresponding normalized Laplacian spectra of the connected regular graphs $G_{1}$, $G_{2}$ and…
The subdivision graph $\mathcal{S}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the graph obtained by inserting a new vertex into every edge of $G$. Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two vertex disjoint graphs. The \emph{subdivision-vertex join} of $G_1$ and $G_2$, denoted by $G_1\dot{\vee}G_2$, is the graph obtained from $\mathcal{S}(G_1)$ and $G_2$ by joining every vertex of $V(G_1)$ with every vertex of $V(G_2)$. The \emph{subdivision-edge join} of $G_1$ and $G_2$, denoted by $G_1\underline{\vee}G_2$, is the graph obtained from $\mathcal{S}(G_1)$ and $G_2$ by joining every vertex of $I(G_1)$ with every vertex of $V(G_2)$, w…
We show that for any integer $t\geq 2$, every properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices with more than $n^{1+o(1)}$ edges contains a rainbow subdivision of $K_t$. Note that this bound on the number of edges is sharp up to the $o(1)$ error term. This is a rainbow analogue of some classical results on clique subdivisions and extends some results on rainbow Turán numbers. Our method relies on the framework introduced by Sudakov and Tomon[2020] which we adapt to find robust expanders in the coloured setting.
Let $K_4^+$ be the 5-vertex graph obtained from $K_4$, the complete graph on four vertices, by subdividing one edge precisely once (i.e. by replacing one edge by a path on three vertices). We prove that if the chromatic number of some graph $G$ is much larger than its clique number, then $G$ contains a subdivision of $K_4^+$ as an induced subgraph.
The subdivision graph $\mathcal{S}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the graph obtained by inserting a new vertex into every edge of $G$. Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two vertex disjoint graphs. The \emph{subdivision-vertex corona} of $G_1$ and $G_2$, denoted by $G_1\odot G_2$, is the graph obtained from $\mathcal{S}(G_1)$ and $|V(G_1)|$ copies of $G_2$, all vertex-disjoint, by joining the $i$th vertex of $V(G_1)$ to every vertex in the $i$th copy of $G_2$. The \emph{subdivision-edge corona} of $G_1$ and $G_2$, denoted by $G_1\circleddash G_2$, is the graph obtained from $\mathcal{S}(G_1)$ and $|I(G_1)|$ copies…
The \emph{domination subdivision number} sd$(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of edges that must be subdivided (where an edge can be subdivided at most once) in order to increase the domination number of $G$. It has been shown \cite{vel} that sd$(T)\leq 3$ for any tree $T$. We prove that the decision problem of the domination subdivision number is NP-complete even for bipartite graphs. For this reason we define the \emph{domination multisubdivision number} of a nonempty graph $G$ as a minimum positive integer $k$ such that there exists an edge which must be subdivided $k$ times to incr…
This paper investigates the asymptotic nature of graph spectra when some edges of a graph are subdivided sufficiently many times. In the special case where all edges of a graph are subdivided, we find the exact limits of the $k$-th largest and $k$-th smallest eigenvalues for any fixed $k$. It is expected that after subdivision, most eigenvalues of the new graph will lie in the interval $[-2,2]$. We examine the eigenvalues of the new graph outside this interval, and we prove several results that might be of independent interest.
For any graph $H$, let ${\rm Forb}^*(H)$ be the class of graphs with no induced subdivision of $H$. It was conjectured in [A.D. Scott, Induced trees in graphs of large chromatic number, {\em Journal of Graph Theory}, 24:297--311, 1997] that, for every graph $H$, there is a function $f_H:\mathbb{N} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ such that for every graph $G \in {\rm Forb}^*(H)$, $χ(G) \leq f_H(ω(G))$. We prove this conjecture for several graphs $H$, namely the paw (a triangle with a pendant edge), the bull (a triangle with two vertex-disjoint pendant edges), and what we call a "necklace," that is, a g…
An odd graph is a finite graph all of whose vertices have odd degrees. Given graph $G$ is decomposable into $k$ odd subgraphs if its edge set can be partitioned into $k$ subsets each of which induces an odd subgraph of $G$. The minimum value of $k$ for which such a decomposition of $G$ exists is the odd chromatic index, $χ_{o}'(G)$, introduced by Pyber (1991). For every $k\geqχ_{o}'(G)$, the graph $G$ is said to be odd $k$-edge-colorable. Apart from two particular exceptions, which are respectively odd $5$- and odd $6$-edge-colorable, the rest of connected loopless graphs are odd $4$-edge-colo…
For a multigraph $F$, the $k$-subdivision of $F$ is the graph obtained by replacing the edges of $F$ with pairwise internally vertex-disjoint paths of length $k+1$. Conlon and Lee conjectured that if $k$ is even, then the $(k-1)$-subdivision of any multigraph has extremal number $O(n^{1+\frac{1}{k}})$, and moreover, that for any simple graph $F$ there exists $\varepsilon>0$ such that the $(k-1)$-subdivision of $F$ has extremal number $O(n^{1+\frac{1}{k}-\varepsilon})$. In this paper, we prove both conjectures.
The $s$-colour size-Ramsey number of a hypergraph $H$ is the minimum number of edges in a hypergraph $G$ whose every $s$-edge-colouring contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. We show that the $s$-colour size-Ramsey number of the $t$-power of the $r$-uniform tight path on $n$ vertices is linear in $n$, for every fixed $r, s, t$, thus answering a question of Dudek, La Fleur, Mubayi, and Rödl (2017). In fact, we prove a stronger result that allows us to deduce that powers of bounded degree hypergraph trees and powers of `long subdivisions' of bounded degree hypergraphs have size-Ramsey numbers tha…
Let $H$ be a fixed graph. What can be said about graphs $G$ that have no subgraph isomorphic to a subdivision of $H$? Grohe and Marx proved that such graphs $G$ satisfy a certain structure theorem that is not satisfied by graphs that contain a subdivision of a (larger) graph $H_1$. Dvořák found a clever strengthening---his structure is not satisfied by graphs that contain a subdivision of a graph $H_2$, where $H_2$ has "similar embedding properties" as $H$. Building upon Dvořák's theorem, we prove that said graphs $G$ satisfy a similar structure theorem. Our structure is not satisfied by graph…
Mader conjectured that every $C_4$-free graph has a subdivision of a clique of order linear in its average degree. We show that every $C_6$-free graph has such a subdivision of a large clique. We also prove the dense case of Mader's conjecture in a stronger sense, i.e. for every $c$, there is a $c'$ such that every $C_4$-free graph with average degree $cn^{1/2}$ has a subdivision of a clique $K_\ell$ with $\ell=\lfloor c'n^{1/2}\rfloor$ where every edge is subdivided exactly $3$ times.
Given a graph $H$ and an integer $k\geqslant 2$, let $f_{k}(n,H)$ be the smallest number of colors $C$ such that there exists a proper edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_{n}$ with $C$ colors containing no $k$ vertex-disjoint color isomorphic copies of $H$. In this paper, we prove that $f_{2}(n,H_{t})=Ω(n^{1+\frac{1}{2t-3}})$ where $H_{t}$ is the $1$-subdivision of the complete graph $K_{t}$. This answers a question of Conlon and Tyomkyn (arXiv: 2002.00921).
The $r$-size-Ramsey number $\hat{R}_r(H)$ of a graph $H$ is the smallest number of edges a graph $G$ can have, such that for every edge-coloring of $G$ with $r$ colors there exists a monochromatic copy of $H$ in $G$. For a graph $H$, we denote by $H^q$ the graph obtained from $H$ by subdividing its edges with $q{-}1$ vertices each. In a recent paper of Kohayakawa, Retter and R{ö}dl, it is shown that for all constant integers $q,r\geq 2$ and every graph $H$ on $n$ vertices and of bounded maximum degree, the $r$-size-Ramsey number of $H^q$ is at most $(\log n)^{20(q-1)}n^{1+1/q}$, for $n$ large …
The leap eccentric connectivity index of $G$ is defined as $$Lξ^{C}(G)=\sum_{v\in V(G)}d_{2}(v|G)e(v|G)$$ where $d_{2}(v|G) $ be the second degree of the vertex $v$ and $e(v|G)$ be the eccentricity of the vertex $v$ in $G$. In this paper, we first give a counterexample for that if $G$ be a graph and $S(G)$ be its the subdivision graph, then each vertex $v\in V(G)$, $e(v|S(G))=2e(v|G)$ by Yarahmadi in \cite{yar14} in Theorem 3.1. And we describe the upper and lower bounds of the leap eccentric connectivity index of four graphs based on subdivision edges, and then give the expressions of the lea…
In 1984, Thomassen conjectured that for every constant $k \in \mathbb{N}$, there exists $d$ such that every graph with average degree at least $d$ contains a balanced subdivision of a complete graph on $k$ vertices, i.e. a subdivision in which each edge is subdivided the same number of times. Recently, Liu and Montgomery confirmed Thomassen's conjecture. We show that for every constant $0<c<1/2$, every graph with average degree at least $d$ contains a balanced subdivision of a complete graph of size at least $Ω(d^{c})$. Note that this bound is almost optimal. Moreover, we show that every spars…
We prove that for every graph $H$ of maximum degree at most $3$ and for every positive integer $q$ there is a finite $f=f(H,q)$ such that every $K_f$-minor contains a subdivision of $H$ in which every edge is replaced by a path whose length is divisible by $q$. For the case of cycles we show that for $f=O(q \log q)$ every $K_f$-minor contains a cycle of length divisible by $q$, and observe that this settles a recent problem of Friedman and the second author about cycles in (weakly) expanding graphs.
For a graph $F$, the $k$-subdivision of $F$, denoted $F^k$, is the graph obtained by replacing the edges of $F$ with internally vertex-disjoint paths of length $k$. In this paper, we prove that $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_{s,t}^k)=O(n^{1+\frac{s-1}{sk}})$, which is tight for $t$ sufficiently large. This settles a conjecture of Conlon--Janzer--Lee, and improves on a substantial body of work by Conlon--Janzer--Lee and Jiang--Qiu.
Let $G$ be a simple graph. A total dominator coloring of $G$, is a proper coloring of the vertices of $G$ in which each vertex of the graph is adjacent to every vertex of some color class. The total dominator chromatic (TDC) number $χ_d^t(G)$ of $G$, is the minimum number of colors among all total dominator coloring of $G$. For any $k \in \mathbb{N}$, the $k$-subdivision of $G$ is a simple graph $G^{\frac{1}{k}}$ which is constructed by replacing each edge of $G$ with a path of length $k$. In this paper, we study the total dominator chromatic number of $k$-subdivision of $G$.

The study of problems concerning subdivisions of graphs has a rich history in extremal combinatorics. Confirming a conjecture of Burr and Erdős, Alon proved in 1994 that subdivided graphs have linear Ramsey numbers. Later, Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov showed that every $n$-vertex graph with at least $\varepsilon n^2$ edges contains a $1$-subdivision of the complete graph on $c_{\varepsilon}\sqrt{n}$ vertices, resolving another old conjecture of Erdős. In this paper we consider the directed analogue of these problems and show that every tournament on at least $(2+o(1))k^2$ vertices contains th…
For any positive integer $s$, a $[2,2s]$-factor in a graph $G$ is a connected even factor with maximum degree at most $2s$. We prove that if every induced $S(K_{1, 2s+1})$ in a graph $G$ has at least 3 edges in a block of degree at most two, then $G^2$ has a $[2,2s]$-factor. This extends the results of Hendry and Vogler and of Abderrezzak et al.
We prove for every graph H there exists a>0 such that, for every graph G with at least two vertices, if no induced subgraph of G is a subdivision of H, then either some vertex of G has at least a|G| neighbours, or there are two disjoint sets A,B of at least a|G| vertices such that no edge joins A and B. It follows that for every graph H, there exists c>0 such that for every graph G, if no induced subgraph of G or its complement is a subdivision of H, then G has a clique or stable set of cardinality at least |G|^c. This is related to the Erdos-Hajnal conjecture.
Let $s$ and $t$ be positive integers. We use $P_t$ to denote the path with $t$ vertices and $K_{1,s}$ to denote the complete bipartite graph with parts of size $1$ and $s$ respectively. The one-subdivision of $K_{1,s}$ is obtained by replacing every edge $\{u,v\}$ of $K_{1,s}$ by two edges $\{u,w\}$ and $\{v,w\}$ with a new vertex $w$. In this paper, we give a polynomial-time algorithm for the list-three-coloring problem restricted to the class of $P_t$-free graph with no induced 1-subdivision of $K_{1,s}$.
For two simple graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, we denote the subdivision-vertex join and subdivision-edge join of $G_1$ and $G_2$ by $G_1\dot{\vee}G_2$ and $G_1\veebar G_2$, respectively. This paper determines the normalized Laplacian spectra of $G_1\dot{\vee}G_2$ and $G_1\veebar G_2$ in terms of these of $G_1$ and $G_2$ whenever $G_1$ and $G_2$ are regular. As applications, we construct some non-regular normalized Laplacian cospectral graphs. Besides we also compute the number of spanning trees and the degree-Kirchhoff index of $G_1\dot{\vee}G_2$ and $G_1\veebar G_2$ for regular graphs $G_1$ and $G_2…
We prove that every internally 4-connected non-planar bipartite graph has an odd K_3,3 subdivision; that is, a subgraph obtained from K_3,3 by replacing its edges by internally disjoint odd paths with the same ends. The proof gives rise to a polynomial-time algorithm to find such a subdivision. (A bipartite graph G is internally 4-connected if it is 3-connected, has at least five vertices, and there is no partition (A,B,C) of V(G) such that |A|,|B|>1, |C|=3 and G has no edge with one end in A and the other in B.)
Graph operations or products play an important role in complex networks. In this paper, we study the properties of $q$-subdivision graphs, which have been applied to model complex networks. For a simple connected graph $G$, its $q$-subdivision graph $S_q(G)$ is obtained from $G$ through replacing every edge $uv$ in $G$ by $q$ disjoint paths of length 2, with each path having $u$ and $v$ as its ends. We derive explicit formulas for many quantities of $S_q(G)$ in terms of those corresponding to $G$, including the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of normalized adjacency matrix, two-node hitting time,…
Given a graph $H$, a balanced subdivision of $H$ is a graph obtained from $H$ by subdividing every edge the same number of times. In 1984, Thomassen conjectured that for each integer $k\ge 1$, high average degree is sufficient to guarantee a balanced subdivision of $K_k$. Recently, Liu and Montgomery resolved this conjecture. We give an optimal estimate up to an absolute constant factor by showing that there exists $c>0$ such that for sufficiently large $d$, every graph with average degree at least $d$ contains a balanced subdivision of a clique with at least $cd^{1/2}$ vertices. It also confi…

In this paper, we determine the two normalized Laplacian spectrum of generalized subdivision- vertex corona, subdivision-edge corona for a connected regular graph with an arbitrary reg- ular graph in terms of their normalized Laplacian eigenvalues. Moreover, applying these results, we find some non-regular normaliaed Laplacian cospectral graphs. These results generalize the existing results in [11].
The Hall ratio of a graph G is the maximum of |V(H)|/alpha(H) over all subgraphs H of G. Clearly, the Hall ratio of a graph is a lower bound for the fractional chromatic number. It has been asked whether conversely, the fractional chromatic number is upper bounded by a function of the Hall ratio. We answer this question in negative, by showing two results of independent interest regarding 1-subdivisions (the 1-subdivision of a graph is obtained by subdividing each edge exactly once). * For every c > 0, every graph of sufficiently large average degree contains as a subgraph the 1-subdivision of…
