Two-dimensional (2D) WS2 films were deposited on SiO2 wafers, and the related interfacial properties were investigated by high-resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and first-principles calculations. Using the direct (indirect) method, the valence band offset (VBO) at monolayer WS2/SiO2 interface was found to be 3.97 eV (3.86 eV), and the conduction band offset (CBO) was 2.70 eV (2.81 eV). Furthermore, the VBO (CBO) at bulk WS2/SiO2 interface is found to be about 0.48 eV (0.33 eV) larger due to the interlayer orbital coupling and splitting of valence and conduction band edges. Therefore, the WS2/SiO2 heterostructure has a Type I energy-band alignment. The band offsets obtained experimentally and theoretically are consistent except the narrower theoretical bandgap of SiO2. The theoretical calculations further reveal a binding energy of 75 meV per S atom and the totally separated partial density of states, indicating a weak interaction and negligible Fermi level pinning effect between WS2 monolayer and SiO2 surface. Our combined experimental and theoretical results provide proof of the sufficient VBOs and CBOs and weak interaction in 2D WS2/SiO2 heterostructures.
The interfacial band configuration of the high-k dielectric Al$_2$O$_3$ deposited at 120°C by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on boron- and phosphorus-doped hydrogen-terminated (111) diamond was investigated. Performing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of core level binding energies and valence band maxima values, the valence band offsets of both heterojunctions are concluded to be ΔE$_V$ = 1.8 eV and ΔE$_V$ = 2.7 eV for the Al$_2$O$_3$/H(111)p and the Al$_2$O$_3$/H(111)n respectively. The ALD Al$_2$O$_3$ bandgap energy was measured from the O 1s photoelectron energy loss spectra to…
Emergent behavior at complex oxide interfaces has driven much of the research in the oxide thin film community for the past twenty years. Interfaces have been engineered for potential applications in spintronics, topological quantum computing, and high-speed electronics in cases where the bulk materials would not exhibit the desired properties. Advances in thin film growth have made the synthesis of these interfaces possible, while surface characterization tools such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have been critical to understanding surface and interfacial phenomena in these materials. In…
The epitaxial growth of the polar GaP(100) on the nonpolar Si(100) substrate suffers from inevitable defects at the antiphase domain boundaries, resulting from mono-atomic steps on the Si(100) surface. Stabilization of Si(100) substrate surfaces with arsenic is a promising technological step enabling the preparation of Si substrates with double atomic steps and reduced density of the APDs. In this paper, 4-50 nm thick GaP epitaxial films were grown on As-terminated Si(100) substrates with different types of doping, miscuts, and As-surface termination by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The Ga…

Diffusion mediated interaction in metal-substrate assembly during high temperature annealing leads to possible formation of new composite materials. Here, sputtered grown Ti films on Si3N4/Si substrate has been reported to produce titanium nitride and silicide based binary composites while undergoing high vacuum annealing process at temperatures 650°C and above. Diffusion of thermally decomposed Si and N atoms from Si3N4 and their subsequent chemical reaction with Ti have been probed by X-ray photo electron spectroscopy. For annealing at 800°C and above, most of the Si atoms show preferences t…
The structure and chemical composition are the key parameters influencing the properties of organic thin films deposited on inorganic substrates. Such films often display structures that substantially differ from the bulk, and the substrate has a relevant influence on their polymorphism. In this work, we illuminate the role of the substrate by studying its influence for para-benzoquinone on two different substrates, Ag(111) and graphene. We employ a combination of first principles calculations and machine learning to identify the energetically most favorable structures on both substrates and s…
In this letter, we performed molecular dynamics simulations of ice nucleation on a rigid surface model of cubic zinc blende structure with different surface dipole strength and orientation. It follows that, despite the excellent lattice match between cubic ice and substrates, the ice nucleation happened only when the interfacial water molecules (IWs) have the same or similar orientations as that of the water molecules in cubic ice. The free energy landscapes revealed that, for substrates with improper dipole strength/orientation, large free energy barriers arose to prevent the dipole of IWs ro…
The growth of Bi films deposited on both A and B faces of InAs(111) has been investigated by low-energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy, and photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. The changes upon Bi deposition of the In 4d and Bi 5d5/2 photoelectron signals allow to get a comprehensive picture of the Bi/InAs(1 1 1) interface. From the initial stages the Bi growth on the A face (In-terminated InAs) is epitaxial, contrary to that on the B face (As- terminated InAs) that proceeds via the formation of islands. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectra show that the…
The sensitive dependence of monolayer materials on their environment often gives rise to unexpected properties. It was recently demonstrated that monolayer FeSe on a SrTiO$_3$ substrate exhibits a much higher superconducting critical temperature T$_C$ than the bulk material. Here, we examine the interfacial structure of FeSe / SrTiO$_3$ and the effect of an interfacial Ti$_{1+x}$O$_2$ layer on the increased T$_C$ using a combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory. We find Ti$_{1+x}$O$_2$ forms its own quasi-two-dimensional layer, bonding to both the …
Water dissociation is of fundamental importance in scientific fields and has drawn considerable interest in diverse technological applications. However, the high activation barrier of breaking the O-H bond within the water molecule has been identified as the bottleneck, even for the water adsorbed on the graphene oxide (GO). Herein, using the density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that the water molecule can be spontaneously dissociated on GO supported by the (111) surface of the copper substrate (Copper-GO). This process involves a proton transferring from water to the interfa…

The interfacial structure of SrZr$_{x}$Ti$_{1-x}$O$_3$ films grown on semiconducting Ge substrates are investigated by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and first-principles density functional theory. By systematically tuning Zr content x, the effects of bonding at the interface and epitaxial strain on the physical structure of the film can be distinguished. The interfacial perovskite layers are found to be polarized as a result of cation-anion ionic displacements perpendicular to the perovskite/semiconductor interface. We find a correlation between the observed buckling and valence band offsets a…
Epitaxial graphene grown on metallic substrates presents, in several cases, a long-range periodic structure due to a lattice mismatch between the graphene and the substrate. For instance, graphene grown on Ir(111), displays a corrugated supercell with distinct adsorption sites due to a variation of its local electronic structure. This type of surface reconstruction represents a challenging problem for a detailed atomic surface structure determination for experimental and theoretical techniques. In this work, we revisited the surface structure determination of graphene on Ir(111) by using the u…
Interfacial ice on graphene has attracted much attention because it is a model system to study two-dimensional (2D) ice structures on chemically inert substrates. While water-graphene interaction was usually assumed to be negligible, the structures of the 2D ice are believed to be not appreciably perturbed by the graphene substrate. Here we report atomic-resolved characterizations of an exotic 2D ice structure on graphene built from water molecular chains with finite lengths. Our experiments demonstrated that the water molecular chains are exactly orientated along zigzag directions of the grap…
Key technologies in energy conversion and storage, sensing and chemical synthesis rely on a detailed knowledge about charge transfer processes at electrified solid-liquid interfaces. However, these interfaces continuously evolve as a function of applied potentials, ionic concentrations and time. We therefore need to characterize chemical composition, atomic arrangement and electronic structure of both the liquid and the solid side of the interface under operating conditions. In this chapter, we discuss the state-of-the-art X-ray based spectroscopy and diffraction approaches for such 'operando'…
Improving reactivity on an insulating surface is crucial due to their important applications in surface catalytic reactions. In this work, we carried out first-principles calculations to investigate the adsorption of O2 on a single-layer MgO(100) film deposited on metal substrate. The adsorption configurations, reaction pathways, molecular dynamics simulations, and electronic properties are reported. We reveal that O2 can completely dissociate on the surface, which is in sharp contrast to that on MgO(100) films thicker than one monolayer. The dissociated O2 tends to penetrate into the interfac…
We report experimental and computational studies of thermal transport properties in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) encapsulated molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) structure using refined optothermal Raman techniques, and reveal very high interfacial thermal conductance between hBN and MoS2. By studying the Raman shift of hBN and MoS2 in suspended and substrate-supported thin films under varying laser power and temperature, we calibrate lateral (in-plane) thermal conductivity of hBN and MoS2 and the vertical interfacial thermal conductance in the hBN/MoS2/hBN heterostructure as well as the interfaces b…
The recent observation of replica bands in single-layer FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has triggered intense discussions concerning the potential influence of the FeSe electrons coupling with substrate phonons on the superconducting transition temperature. Here we provide strong evidence that the replica bands observed in the single-layer FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ system and several other cases are largely due to the energy loss processes of the escaping photoelectron, resulted from the well-known strong coupling of external propagating electrons to Fuchs-Kliewer (F-K…
The interface formation between copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and two representative metal substrates, i.e., Au and Co, was investigated by the combination of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and inverse photoelectron spectroscopy. The occupied and unoccupied molecular orbitals and thus the transport band gap of CuPc are highly influenced by film thickness, i.e., molecule-substrate distance. Due to the image charge potential given by the metallic substrates the transport band gap of CuPc "opens" from $(1.4 \pm 0.3)$ eV for 1 nm thickness to $(2.2 \pm 0.3)$ eV, and saturates at this value …
Modeling and Inverse Identification of Interfacial Heat Conduction in Finite Layer and Semi-Infinite Substrate Systems via a Physics-Guided Neural Framework
We demonstrate that the interfacial dipole associated with bonding across the SrTiO3/Si heterojunction can be tuned through space charge, thereby enabling the band alignment to be altered via doping. Oxygen impurities in Si act as donors that create space charge by transferring electrons across the interface into SrTiO3. The space charge induces an electric field that modifies the interfacial dipole, thereby tuning the band alignment from type-II to type-III. The transferred charge, resulting in built-in electric fields, and change in band alignment are manifested in electrical transport and h…
The epitaxy of MoO2 on c_plane sapphire substrates is examined. A theoretical approach, based on density functional theory calculations of the strain energy, allowed to predict the preferred layer/substrate epitaxial relationships. To test the results of these calculations, MoO2/(001) Al2O3 heterostructures were grown using the chemically_driven isothermal close space vapour transport technique. At the early stages of the growth, two kinds of morphologies were obtained, using the same growth parameters: lying and standing flakes. The composition and morphology, as well as the layer/substrate e…
The shape dependence for the technologically important nickel oxide (NiO) nanocrystals on (001) strontium titanate substrates is investigated under the generalized Wulff-Kaichew (GWK) theorem framework. It is found that the shape of the NiO nanocrystals is primarily governed by the existence (or absence) of interfacial strain. Nanocrystals that have a fully pseudomorphic interface with the substrate (i.e. the epitaxial strain is not relaxed) form an embedded smooth ball-crown morphology with {001}, {011}, {111} and high-index {113} exposed facets with a negative Wulff point. On the other hand,…
Interface science has become a key aspect for fundamental research questions and for the understanding, design and optimization of urgently needed energy and information technologies. As the interface properties change during operation, e.g. under applied electrochemical stimulus, and because multiple bulk and interface processes coexist and compete, detailed operando characterization is needed. In this perspective, I present an overview of the state-of-the art and challenges in selected X-ray spectroscopic techniques, concluding that among others, interface-sensitivity remains a major concern…
Atomically thin monolayers of graphene show excellent electronic properties which have led to a great deal of research on their use in nanoscale devices. However, heat management of such nanoscale devices is essential in order to improve their performance. Graphene supported on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) substrate has been reported to show enhanced (opto)electronic and thermal properties as compared to extensively used SiO2/Si supported graphene. Motivated by this, we have performed temperature- and power-dependent Raman Spectroscopic measurements on four different types of (hetero)structu…
Interfacial charge rearrangement and intermolecular interactions: Density-functional theory study of free-base porphine adsorbed on Ag(111) and Cu(111)
A systematic study to investigate the effects of X-ray exposure on electrical properties of silicon dioxide thin films using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
Cerium dioxide (CeO2) thin films were deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on both Si and TiN substrates. The ALD growth produces CeO2 cubic polycrystalline films on both substrates. However, the films show a preferential orientation along <200> crystallographic direction for CeO2/Si or <111> for CeO2/TiN. In correspondence, we measure a relative concentration of Ce3+ equals to 22.0% in CeO2/Si and around 18% in CeO2/TiN, by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Such values indicate the presence of oxygen vacancies in the films. Our results extend the knowledge on the structural and chemical…
Thin FeRh film was extensively studied recently, and an emergent substrate- and capping-dependent interfacial ferromagnetism (FM) was widely observed in experiments. However, the voltage modulation of this interfacial ferromagnetism is barely studied, which would have profound applications in antiferromagnetic (AFM) FeRh-based magnetoelectric-random access memory (MeRAM). Using ab initio techniques, we comparatively study the interfacial ferromagnetic properties and magnetoelectric responses of ultrathin FeRh films capped by heavy transition metal Ta. We find that Ta capping reverses the phase…
We have successfully demonstrated Si/GaAs p-n heterostructures using Al2O3 ultra-thin oxide interfacial layers. The band diagram and band offsets were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and confirm a small discontinuity in the conduction band (0.03 eV) at the interface. The interface defect density (Dit) values of the heterointerface with different ultra-thin oxide (UO) thicknesses ranged from 0.35 nm to 3.5 nm and were also characterized based on a metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor (MOSCAP) structure using a capacitance-voltage measurement. The results revealed that a thin …
