Epitaxial graphene grown on metallic substrates presents, in several cases, a long-range periodic structure due to a lattice mismatch between the graphene and the substrate. For instance, graphene grown on Ir(111), displays a corrugated supercell with distinct adsorption sites due to a variation of its local electronic structure. This type of surface reconstruction represents a challenging problem for a detailed atomic surface structure determination for experimental and theoretical techniques. In this work, we revisited the surface structure determination of graphene on Ir(111) by using the unique advantage of surface and chemical selectivity of synchrotron-based photoelectron diffraction. We take advantage of the Ir 4f photoemission surface state and use its diffraction signal as a probe to investigate the atomic arrangement of the graphene topping layer. We determine the average height and the overall corrugation of the graphene layer, which are respectively equal to 3.40 $\pm 0.11 Å$ and 0.45 $\pm 0.03 Å$. Furthermore, we explore the graphene topography in the vicinity of its high-symmetry adsorption sites and show that the experimental data can be described by three reduced systems simplifying the Moiré supercell multiple scattering analysis.
The electronic band structure in the epitaxial Fe/MgO/GaAs(001) tunnel junction has been studied by X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. The Schottky barrier height (SBH) of Fe on MgO/GaAs heterostructure is determined to be 3.3+-0.1eV, which sets the Fe Fermi level about 0.3eV above the GaAs valence band maximum. This SBH is also exactly the same as that measured from Fe on MgO monocrystal. After Fe deposition, no band bending change is observed in MgO and GaAs underlayers. On the contrary, Au and Al deposition lead to clear variation of the band bending in both MgO …
The electronic band structure of thin films and superlattices made of Heusler compounds with NiTiSn and NiZr$_{0.5}$Hf$_{0.5}$Sn composition was studied by means of polarization dependent hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The linear dichroism allowed to distinguish the symmetry of the valence states of the different types of layered structures. The films exhibit a larger amount of {\it "in-gap"} states compared to bulk samples. It is shown that the films and superlattices grown with NiTiSn as starting layer exhibit an electronic structure close to bulk materials.
The initial growth of MnBi on MnAs terminated (GaMn)As is studied by means of synchrotron based photoelectron spectroscopy. From analysis of surface core level shifts we conclude that a continued epitaxial MnBi layer is formed, in which the MnAs/MnBi interface occurs between As and Bi atomic planes. The well defined 1x2 surface reconstruction of the MnAs surface in preserved for up to 2 ML of MnBi before clear surface degradation occurs.
Epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) suffers from strong intrinsic n-type doping. We demonstrate that the excess negative charge can be fully compensated by non-covalently functionalizing graphene with the strong electron acceptor tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ). Charge neutrality can be reached in monolayer graphene as shown in electron dispersion spectra from angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In bilayer graphene the band gap that originates from the SiC/graphene interface dipole increases with increasing F4-TCNQ deposition and, as a consequence of the molecular do…
We propose a table-top method to obtain bilayer quasi-free-standing epitaxial-graphene (QFSEG) on SiC(0001). By applying a microwave annealing in air to a monolayer epitaxial graphene (EG) grown on SiC(0001), the buffer layer is decoupled from the SiC substrate and becomes the second EG layer as confirmed by the low energy electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The most likely mechanism of the decoupling is given by the oxidation of the SiC surface, w…
An in situ study of the epitaxial growth of SmN thin films on Ga-polar GaN (0001)templates by molecular beam epitaxy is reported. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we found that Ga segregates at the surface during the first stages of growth. We showed that the problem related to Ga surface segregation can be simply suppressed by growing a few monolayers of AlN before starting the SmN growth. This results in a significant improvement of the crystallinity of SmN thin films assessed by X-ray diffraction.
We study the formation of epitaxial graphene on Ru(0001) using fast x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy during the growth process. The assignment of different C 1s and Ru 3d core level components and their evolution during the growth process gives a detailed insight into the graphene formation and the strongly varying graphene-Ru interaction strength within the large moire unit cell. Subsequent intercalation of oxygen can be achieved at elevated temperature and the core level spectra show a conversion of the strongly corrugated to quasi free-standing graphene, characterised by a single narrow C 1…
The epitaxial growth of the polar GaP(100) on the nonpolar Si(100) substrate suffers from inevitable defects at the antiphase domain boundaries, resulting from mono-atomic steps on the Si(100) surface. Stabilization of Si(100) substrate surfaces with arsenic is a promising technological step enabling the preparation of Si substrates with double atomic steps and reduced density of the APDs. In this paper, 4-50 nm thick GaP epitaxial films were grown on As-terminated Si(100) substrates with different types of doping, miscuts, and As-surface termination by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The Ga…
Epitaxial semiconducting NiYBi thin films were directly prepared on MgO(100) substrates by magnetron sputtering. The intensity ratio of the (200) and (400) diffraction peaks, I(200)/I(400) = 2.93, was close to the theoretical value (3.03). The electronic structure of NiYBi was calculated using WIEN2k and a narrow indirect band gap of width 210 meV was found. The valence band spectra of the films obtained by linear dichroism in hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy exhibit clear structures that are in good agreement with the calculated band structure of NiYBi.
Magnetite thin fims have been grown epitaxially on ZnO and MgO substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. The film quality was found to be strongly dependent on the oxygen partial pressure during growth. Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties were analyzed utilizing Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED), HArd X-ray PhotoElectron Spectroscopy (HAXPES), Magneto Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE), and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD). Diffraction patterns show clear indication for growth in the (111) direction on ZnO. Vertical structure analysis by HAXPES depth profiling revealed uniform …
The growth and characterization of epitaxial Co3O4(111) films grown by oxygen plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on single crystalline a-Al2O3(0001) is reported. The Co3O4(111) grows single crystalline with the epitaxial relation Co3O4(111)[-12-1]||a-Al2O3(0001)[10-10], as determined from in situ electron diffraction. Film stoichiometry is confirmed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, while ex situ x-ray diffraction measurements show that the Co3O4 films are fully relaxed. Post-growth annealing induces significant modifications in the film morphology, including a sharper Co3O4/a-Al2O3 int…
Thin films of the proposed topological insulator PdLuBi - a Heusler compound with the C1b structure - were prepared on Ta-Mo-buffered MgO(100) substrates by co-sputtering from PdBi2 and Lu targets. Epitaxial growth of high-quality PdLuBi films was confirmed by X-ray spectrometry and reflection high-energy electron diffraction. The root-mean-square roughness of the films was as low as 1.45 nm, although the films were deposited at high temperature. The film composition is close to the ideal stoichiometric ratio. The valence band spectra of the PdLuBi films, observed by hard X-ray photoelectron s…
We report the growth of thin films of the mixed valence compound YbAl$_{3}$ on MgO using molecular-beam epitaxy. Employing an aluminum buffer layer, epitaxial (001) films can be grown with sub-nm surface roughness. Using x-ray diffraction, in situ low-energy electron diffraction and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy we establish that the films are ordered in the bulk as well as at the surface. Our films show a coherence temperature of 37 K, comparable to that reported for bulk single crystals. Photoelectron spectroscopy reveals contributions from both $\textit{f}^{…
After the discovery of Dirac fermions in graphene, it has become a natural question to ask whether it is possible to realize Dirac fermions in other two-dimensional (2D) materials as well. In this work, we report the discovery of multiple Dirac-like electronic bands in ultrathin Ge films grown on Au(111) by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. By tuning the thickness of the films, we are able to observe the evolution of their electronic structure when passing through the monolayer limit. Our discovery may signify the synthesis of germanene, a 2D honeycomb structure made of Ge, which is a…
Li metal has been deposited on the surface of a Ru(0001) single crystal containing patches of monolayer-thick epitaxial graphene islands. The use of low-energy electron microscopy and diffraction allowed us to {\em in situ} monitor the process by measuring the local work function as well as to study the system in real and reciprocal space, comparing the changes taking place on the graphene with those on the bare Ru(0001) surface. It is found that Li deposition decreases the work function of the graphene islands but to a much smaller degree than of the Ru(0001) surface, as corresponds to its in…
Experimental results on Bi2FeCrO6 (BFCO) epitaxial films deposited by laser ablation on SrTiO3 substrates are presented. It has been theoretically predicted using first-principles density functional theory that BFCO is ferrimagnetic (with a magnetic moment of 2muB per formula unit) and ferroelectric (with a polarization of ~80 microC/cm2 at 0K). The crystal structure investigated using X-ray diffraction shows that the films are epitaxial with a high degree of crystallinity. Chemical analysis carried out by X-ray Microanalysis and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy indicates the correct cationic …
We report the use of a surfactant molecule during the epitaxy of graphene on SiC(0001) that leads to the growth in an unconventional orientation, namely $R0^\circ$ rotation with respect to the SiC lattice. It yields a very high-quality single-layer graphene with a uniform orientation with respect to the substrate, on the wafer scale. We find an increased quality and homogeneity compared to the approach based on the use of a pre-oriented template to induce the unconventional orientation. Using spot profile analysis low energy electron diffraction, angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, and …
Since the discovery of graphene, intensive efforts have been made in search of novel two-dimensional (2D) materials. Decreasing the materials dimensionality to their ultimate thinness is a promising route to unveil new physical phenomena, and potentially improve the performance of devices. Among recent 2D materials, analogs of graphene, the group IV elements have attracted much attention for their unexpected and tunable physical properties. Depending on the growth conditions and substrates, several structures of silicene, germanene, and stanene can be formed. Here, we report the synthesis of a…
Graphene, consisting of an inert, thermally stable material with an atomically flat, dangling bond-free surface is by essence an ideal template layer for van der Waals heteroepitaxy of two-dimensional materials such as silicene. However, depending on the synthesis method and growth parameters, graphene (Gr) substrates could exhibit, on a single sample, various surface structures, thicknesses, defects, and step heights. These structures noticeably affect the growth mode of epitaxial layers, e.g. turning the layer-by-layer growth into the Volmer-Weber growth promoted by defect-assisted nucleatio…
The thermal decomposition of SiC surface provides, perhaps, the most promising method for the epitaxial growth of graphene on a material useful in the electronics platform. Currently, efforts are focused on a reliable method for the growth of large-area, low-strain epitaxial graphene that is still lacking. We report here a novel method for the fast, single-step epitaxial growth of large-area homogeneous graphene film on the surface of SiC(0001) using an infrared CO2 laser (10.6 μm) as the heating source. Apart from enabling extreme heating and cooling rates, which can control the stacking orde…
Epitaxial Al/GaAs/Al structures having controlled thickness of high-quality GaAs and pristine interfaces have been fabricated using a wafer-bonding technique. III-V semiconductor/Al structures are grown by molecular beam epitaxy on III-V semiconductor substrates and bonded to silicon and sapphire. Selective etching is used to remove the III-V substrate followed by surface cleaning and superconductor regrowth, resulting in epitaxial Al/GaAs/Al tri-layers on sapphire or silicon substrates. Structures are characterized with reflection high energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy, X-r…
Fully epitaxial magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with off-stoichiometric Co2-based Heusler alloy shows a intense dependency of the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) on the Mn composition, demonstrating giant TMR ratios of up to 1995% at 4.2 K for 1. This work reports on the electronic structure of non-stoichiometric CoxMnyGez thin films with a fixed Co/Ge ratio of x : z = 2 : 0.38. The electronic structure was investigated by high energy, hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations. The high-resolution measurements of the valence band of the non-stoichiometri…
SrTiO$_{3}$ (STO) epitaxial thin films and heterostructures are of considerable interest due to the wide range of functionalities they exhibit. The alloy perovskite (LaAlO$_{3}$)$_{0.3}$-(Sr$_{2}$AlTaO$_{6}$)$_{0.7}$ (LSAT) is commonly used as a substrate for these material structures due to its structural compatibility with STO and the strain-induced ferroelectric response in STO films grown on LSAT. However, surprisingly little is known about the electronic properties of the STO/LSAT interface despite its potentially important role in affecting the overall electronic structure of system. We …
A simple, non-invasive method using Raman spectroscopy for the estimation of the thickness of graphene layers grown epitaxially on silicon carbide (SiC) is presented, enabling simultaneous determination of thickness, grain size and disorder using the spectra. The attenuation of the substrate Raman signal due to the graphene overlayer is found to be dependent on the graphene film thickness deduced from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy of the surfaces. We explain this dependence using an absorbing overlayer model. This method can be used for mapping graphene …
Electronic phase transition in strongly correlated materials is extremely sensitive to the dimensionality and crystallographic orientations. Transition metal nitrides (TMNs) are seldom investigated due to the difficulty in fabricating the high-quality and stoichiometric single crystals. In this letter, we report the epitaxial growth and electronic properties of CrN films on different-oriented NdGaO3 (NGO) substrates. Astonishingly, the CrN films grown on (110)-oriented NGO substrates maintain a metallic phase, whereas the CrN films grown on (010)-oriented NGO substrates are semiconducting. We …
We present here experimental results obtained on Bi2FeCrO6 (BFCO) epitaxial films deposited by laser ablation directly on SrTiO3 substrates. It has been theoretically predicted, by Baettig and Spaldin, using first-principles density functional theory that BFCO is ferrimagnetic (with a magnetic moment of 2 Bohr magneton per formula unit) and ferroelectric (with a polarization of ~80 microC/cm2 at 0K). The crystal structure has been investigated using X-ray diffraction which shows that the films are epitaxial with a high crystallinity and have a degree of orientation depending of the deposition …
We present energy filtered electron emission spectromicroscopy with spatial and wave-vector resolution on few layer epitaxial graphene on SiC$(000-1) grown by furnace annealing. Low energy electron microscopy shows that more than 80% of the sample is covered by 2-3 graphene layers. C1s spectromicroscopy provides an independent measurement of the graphene thickness distribution map. The work function, measured by photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM), varies across the surface from 4.34 to 4.50eV according to both the graphene thickness and the graphene-SiC interface chemical state. At least…
The growth of Bi films deposited on both A and B faces of InAs(111) has been investigated by low-energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy, and photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. The changes upon Bi deposition of the In 4d and Bi 5d5/2 photoelectron signals allow to get a comprehensive picture of the Bi/InAs(1 1 1) interface. From the initial stages the Bi growth on the A face (In-terminated InAs) is epitaxial, contrary to that on the B face (As- terminated InAs) that proceeds via the formation of islands. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectra show that the…
Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) provide an efficient dynamical coupling between strain and magnetization in micro/nano-metric devices. Using a hybrid device composed of a piezoelectric, GaAs, and a ferromagnetic Heusler alloy thin film, Fe$_3$Si, we are able to quantify the amplitude of magnetoacoustic waves generated with SAWs via magnetic imaging in an X-ray photoelectron microscope. The cubic anisotropy of the sample together with a low damping coefficient allows for the observation of resonant and non-resonant magnetoelastic coupling. Additionally, via micromagnetic simulation, we verify the…
We investigate sputtering of a Ti3SiC2 compound target at temperatures ranging from RT (no applied external heating) to 970 oC as well as the influence of the sputtering power at 850 oC for the deposition of Ti3SiC2 films on Al2O3(0001) substrates. Elemental composition obtained from time-of-flight energy elastic recoil detection analysis shows an excess of carbon in all films, which is explained by differences in angular distribution between C, Si and Ti, where C scatters the least during sputtering. The oxygen content is 2.6 at.% in the film deposited at RT and decreases with increasing depo…
The helical spin texture on the surface of topological crystalline insulators (TCI) makes these materials attractive for application in spintronics. In this work, spin-polarization and electronic structure of surface states of (111)-oriented Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Se TCI epitaxial films are examined by angle -- as well as spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SR-ARPES). High-quality epilayers with various Sn content are grown by the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method. Topological-normal insulator transition manifesting itself as band gap opening is observed. It is shown that the gap opening can …
Interest in the use of graphene in electronic devices has motivated an explosion in the study of this remarkable material. The simple, linear Dirac cone band structure offers a unique possibility to investigate its finer details by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). Indeed, ARPES has been performed on graphene grown on metal substrates but electronic applications require an insulating substrate. Epitaxial graphene grown by the thermal decomposition of silicon carbide (SiC) is an ideal candidate for this due to the large scale, uniform graphene layers produced. The experimental …
The electronic and magnetic properties of epitaxial LaNiO3/LaAlO3 superlattices can be tuned by layer thickness and substrate-induced strain. Here, we report on direct measurements of the k-space-resolved electronic structure of buried nickelate layers in superlattices under compressive strain by soft x-ray photoemission. After disentangling strong extrinsic contributions to the angle-dependent signal caused by photoelectron diffraction, we are able to extract Fermi surface information from our data. We find that with decreasing LaNiO3 thickness down to two unit cells (2 uc) quasiparticle cohe…
Lattice matched n-type AlInP(100) charge selective contacts are commonly grown on n-p GaInP(100) top absorbers in high-efficiency III-V multijunction solar or photoelectrochemical cells. The cell performance can be greatly limited by the electron selectivity and valance band offset at this heterointerface. Understanding of the atomic and electronic properties of the GaInP/AlInP heterointerface is crucial for the reduction of photocurrent losses in III-V multijunction devices. In our paper, we investigated chemical composition and electronic properties of n-GaInP/n-AlInP heterostructures by X-r…
A laboratory hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HXPS) system equipped with a monochromatic Cr K$α$ ($hν= 5414.7$ eV) X-ray source was applied to an investigation of the core-level electronic structure of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$. No appreciable high binding-energy shoulder in the O $1s$ HXPS spectra were observed while an enhanced low binding-energy shoulder structure in the Mn $2p_{3/2}$ HXPS spectra were observed, both of which are manifestation of high bulk sensitivity. Such high bulk sensitivity enabled us to track the Mn $2p_{3/2}$ shoulder structure in the full range of $x$, giving us…
We present the electronic and structural properties of monolayer WSe$_{2}$ grown by pulsed-laser deposition on monolayer graphene (MLG) on SiC. The spin splitting in the WSe$_{2}$ valence band at $\overline{\mathrm{K}}$ was $Δ_\mathrm{SO}=0.469\pm0.008$ eV by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Synchrotron-based grazing-incidence in-plane X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the in-plane lattice constant of monolayer WSe$_{2}$ to be $a_\mathrm{WSe_2}=3.2757\pm0.0008 \mathrm{Å}$. This indicates a lattice compression of -0.19 % from bulk WSe$_{2}$. By using experimentally determined g…

The electronic structure of heterointerfaces play a pivotal role in their device functionality. Recently, highly crystalline ultrathin films of superconducting NbN have been integrated by molecular beam epitaxy with the semiconducting GaN. We use soft X-ray angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to directly measure the momentum-resolved electronic band structures for both NbN and GaN constituents of this Schottky heterointerface, and determine their momentum-dependent interfacial band offset as well as the band-bending profile into GaN. We find, in particular, that the Fermi states in NbN a…
We study the underlying chemical, electronic and magnetic properties of a number of magnetite based thin films. The main focus is placed onto NiO/Fe$_3$O$_4$(001) bilayers grown on MgO(001) and Nb-SrTiO$_3$(001) substrates. We compare the results with those obtained on pure Fe$_3$O$_4$(001) thin films. It is found that the magnetite layers are oxidized and Fe$^{3+}$ dominates at the surfaces due to maghemite ($γ$-Fe$_2$O$_3$) formation, which decreases with increasing magnetite layer thickness. From a layer thickness of around 20 nm on the cationic distribution is close to that of stoichiometr…
So far, it represents a challenging task to reproduce angle-resolved photoelectron (ARPES) spectra of epitaxial silicene by first-principles calculations. Here, we report on the resolution of the previously controversial issue related to the structural configuration of silicene on the ZrB$_2$(0001) surface and its band structure. In particular, by representing the band structure in a large Brillouin zone associated with a single Si atom, it is found that the imaginary part of the one-particle Green's function follows the spectral weight observed in ARPES spectra. By additionally varying the in…
Epitaxial graphene on Ir(111) prepared in excellent structural quality is investigated by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. It clearly displays a Dirac cone with the Dirac point shifted only slightly above the Fermi level. The moire resulting from the overlaid graphene and Ir(111) surface lattices imposes a superperiodic potential giving rise to Dirac cone replicas and the opening of minigaps in the band structure.
At very high doping levels the van Hove singularity in the $π^*$ band of graphene becomes occupied and exotic ground states possibly emerge, driven by many-body interactions. Employing a combination of ytterbium intercalation and potassium adsorption, we $n$ dope epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide past the $π^*$ van Hove singularity, up to a charge carrier density of 5.5$\times$10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$. This regime marks the unambiguous completion of a Lifshitz transition in which the Fermi surface topology has evolved from two electron pockets into a giant hole pocket. Angle-resolved photoelect…
Single Crystalline Fe3-deltaO4 (0<=delta<=0.33) films have been epitaxially grown on InAs (001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy using O2 as source of active oxygen. Under optimum growth conditions in-situ real time reflection high-energy electron diffraction patterns along with ex-situ atomic force microscopy indicated the (001) Fe3-deltaO4 to be grown under step-flow-growth mode with a characteristic surface reconstruction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrate the possibility to obtain iron oxides with compositions ranging from Fe3O4 to gamma-Fe2O3. Superconducting quantum interf…
We present a complete characterisation at the nanoscale of the growth and structure of single-layer tungsten disulfide (WS$_2$) epitaxially grown on Au(111). Following the growth process in real time with fast x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we obtain a singly-oriented layer by choosing the proper W evaporation rate and substrate temperature during the growth. Information about the morphology, size and layer stacking of the WS$_2$ layer were achieved by employing x-ray photoelectron diffraction and low-energy electron microscopy. The strong spin splitting in the valence band of WS$_2$ couple…
Recently the graphene/SiC interface has emerged as a versatile platform for the epitaxy of otherwise unstable, monoelemental, two-dimensional (2D) layers via intercalation. Intrinsically capped into a van der Waals heterostructure with overhead graphene, they compose a new class of quantum materials with striking properties contrasting their parent bulk crystals. Intercalated silver presents a prototypical example where 2D quantum confinement and inversion symmetry breaking entail a metal-to-semiconductor transition. However, little is known about the associated unoccupied states, and control …
The intercalation of epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) with Ca has been studied extensively, yet precisely where the Ca resides remains elusive. Furthermore, the intercalation of Mg underneath epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) has not been reported. Here, we use low energy electron diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, secondary electron cut-off photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy to elucidate the physical and electronic structure of both Ca- and Mg-intercalated epitaxial graphene on 6H-SiC(0001). We find that Ca intercalates underneath the buffer layer and bonds to the Si-ter…
The effect of film morphology on its surface chemistry and band structure has been analyzed for gallium nitride epitaxial films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The film morphology has been studied using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, and the bandstructure, defect and emission properties have been studied by X ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. It was found that the highly porous GaN nanowall network shows the highest relative conductivity and does not have defect related luminescence. The flatter films were more resistive and showed…
X-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) has developed into a powerful technique for the structural analysis of solids. Extension of the technique into the hard-X-ray range (hXPD) gives access to true bulk information. Here we give a status report on hXPD experiments using a novel full-field imaging technique: Time-of-flight momentum microscopy (ToF-MM). A special variant of ToF-MM is capable of recording high kinetic energies (up to >7keV) and enlarged k-fields-of-view. We present applications that are specific for high kinetic energies. The strong site specificity of hXPD is exemplified for NbS…
Despite the large literature focused on the growth of graphene (Gr) on 6H-SiC(0001) by chemical vapour deposition (CVD), some important issues have not been solved and full wafer scale epitaxy of Gr remains challenging, hampering applications in microelectronics. With this study we shed light on the generic mechanism which produces the coexistence of two different types of Gr domains, whose proportion can be carefully controlled by tuning the H2 flow rate. For the first time, we show that the growth of Gr using CVD under H2/Ar flow rate proceeds in two stages. Firstly, the nucleation of free-s…
Phase change alloys are used for non-volatile random access memories exploiting the conductivity contrast between amorphous and metastable, crystalline phase. However, this contrast has never been directly related to the electronic band structure. Here, we employ photoelectron spectroscopy to map the relevant bands for metastable, epitaxial GeSbTe films. The constant energy surfaces of the valence band close to the Fermi level are hexagonal tubes with little dispersion perpendicular to the (111) surface. The electron density responsible for transport belongs to the tails of this bulk valence b…
The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) materials launched a fascinating frontier of flatland electronics. Most crystalline atomic layer materials are based on layered van der Waals materials with weak interlayer bonding, which naturally leads to thermodynamically stable monolayers. We report the synthesis of a 2D insulator comprised of a single atomic sheet of honeycomb structure BeO (h-BeO), although its bulk counterpart has a wurtzite structure. The h-BeO is grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on Ag(111) thin films that are conveniently grown on Si(111) wafers. Using scanning tunneling micr…
The development of graphene (Gr) spintronics requires the ability to engineer epitaxial Gr heterostructures with interfaces of high quality, in which the intrinsic properties of Gr are modified through proximity with a ferromagnet to allow for efficient room temperature spin manipulation or the stabilization of new magnetic textures. These heterostructures can be prepared in a controlled way by intercalation through graphene of different metals. Using photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), we achieve a nanoscale control of thermal activated intercalation of h…
Silicon oxide can be formed in a crystalline form, when prepared on a metallic substrate. It is a candidate support catalyst and possibly the ultimately-thin version of a dielectric host material for two-dimensional materials (2D) and heterostructures. We determine the atomic structure and chemical bonding of the ultimately thin version of the oxide, epitaxially grown on Ru(0001). In particular, we establish the existence of two sub-lattices defined by metal-oxygen-silicon bridges involving inequivalent substrate sites. We further discover four electronic bands below Fermi level, at high bindi…
Transmission of low-energetic electrons through two-dimensional materials leads to unique scattering resonances. These resonances contribute to photoemission from occupied bands where they appear as strongly dispersive features of suppressed photoelectron intensity. Using angle-resolved photoemission we have systematically studied scattering resonances in epitaxial graphene grown on the chemically differing substrates Ir(111), Bi/Ir, Ni(111) as well as in graphene/Ir(111) nanopatterned with a superlattice of uniform Ir quantum dots. While the strength of the chemical interaction with the subst…
