We show that the collectivity of the particle-hole wave function of low-lying octupole 3^- states in doubly magic nuclei is mainly due to the neutron-proton interaction. Both the enhanced reduced transition probability to the ground state, B(E3;3-_1 -> 0+_1), and the coupling of the octupole excitation to a nucleon result from the coherent action of all the components of the collective state. The results obtained with a realistic shell-model interaction both for 208Pb and 209Pb agree with the geometric collective model of Bohr and Mottelson, where octupole excitations are associated with phonons corresponding to collective shape oscillations of the surface of the nucleus.

Enhanced octupole collectivity is expected in the neutron-deficient Ge, Se and Kr isotopes with neutron number $N \approx 40$ and has indeed been observed for $^{70,72}$Ge. Shape coexistence and configuration mixing are, however, a notorious challenge for theoretical models trying to reliably predict octupole collectivity in this mass region, which is known to feature rapid shape changes with changing nucleon number and spin of the system. To further investigate the microscopic configurations causing the prolate-oblate-triaxial shape transition at $A \approx 72$ and their influence on octupole…

The evolution of quadrupole and octupole collectivity in neutron-deficient Xe, Ba, Ce, and Nd nuclei near the "octupole magic" neutron number $N=56$ is investigated within the mapped $sdf$-IBM framework. Microscopic input is obtained via quadrupole and octupole constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations, based on the parametrization D1M of the Gogny energy density functional. Octupole-deformed mean-field ground states are predicted for Ba and Ce isotopes near $N=56$. Excitation energies of positive- and negative-parity states as well as electric transition rates are computed with wave fu…
The lowest positive- and negative-parity bands of $^{20}$Ne and neutron-rich even-even Ne isotopes are investigated using a theoretical framework based on energy density functionals. Starting from a self-consistent relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov calculation of axially-symmetric and reflection-asymmetric deformation energy surfaces, the collective symmetry-conserving states are built using projection techniques and the generator coordinate method. Overall a good agreement with the experimental excitation energies and transition rates is obtained. In particular, the model provides an accurate d…
The onset of octupole deformation and its impact on related spectroscopic properties is studied in even-even neutron-rich lanthanide isotopes Xe, Ba, Ce, and Nd with neutron number $86\leqslant N\leqslant 94$. Microscopic input comes from the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation with constrains on the axially symmetric quadrupole and octupole operators using the Gogny-D1M interaction. At the mean-field level, reflection asymmetric ground states are predicted for isotopes with neutron number around $N=88$. Spectroscopic properties are studied by diagonalizing the interacting boson model Hamilt…
The microscopic description of collectivity in heavy nuclei in the framework of the configuration-interaction shell model has been a major challenge. The size of the model space required for the description of heavy nuclei prohibits the use of conventional diagonalization methods. We have overcome this difficulty by using the shell model Monte Carlo (SMMC) method, which can treat model spaces that are many orders of magnitude larger than those that can be treated by conventional methods. We identify a thermal observable that can distinguish between vibrational and rotational collectivity and u…
We present a comprehensive study on the low-lying states of neutron-rich Er, Yb, Hf, and W isotopes across the $N=126$ shell with a multi-reference covariant density functional theory. Beyond mean-field effects from shape mixing and symmetry restoration on the observables that are relevant for understanding quadrupole collectivity and underlying shell structure are investigated. The general features of low-lying states in closed-shell nuclei are retained in these four isotopes around $N=126$, even though the shell gap is overall quenched by about 30\% with the beyond mean-field effects. These …
Heavy nuclei exhibit a crossover from vibrational to rotational collectivity as the number of neutrons or protons increases from shell closure towards midshell, but the microscopic description of this crossover has been a major challenge. We apply the shell model Monte Carlo approach to families of even-even samarium and neodymium isotopes and identify a microscopic signature of the crossover from vibrational to rotational collectivity in the low-temperature behavior of $<\mathbf{J}^2>_T$, where $\bf J$ is the total spin and $T$ is the temperature. This signature agrees well with its values ex…
A realistic shell-model study is performed for neutron-deficient tin isotopes up to mass A=108. All shell-model ingredients, namely two-body matrix elements, single-particle energies, and effective charges for electric quadrupole transition operators, have been calculated by way of the many-body perturbation theory, starting from a low-momentum interaction derived from the high-precision CD-Bonn free nucleon-nucleon potential. The focus has been put on the enhanced quadrupole collectivity of these nuclei, which is testified by the observed large B(E2;0+ -> 2+)s. Our results evidence the crucia…
A solvable model is proposed for the description of octupole phonons in closed-shell nuclei, formulated in terms of shell-model par\-ticle--hole excitations. With some simple assumptions concerning single-particle energies and two-body interactions, closed expressions are derived for the energy and wave function of the octupole phonon. In particular, it is shown that the components of the octupole phonon are proportional to Wigner $3j$ coefficients. This analytic wave function is proven to be exactly valid in light nuclei, which have $LS$ shell closures that coincide with those of the three-di…
In the present work, we have reported shell model results for open shell nuclei Ne, Mg and Si isotopes with $10 \leq N \leq 20$ in $sd$-shell model space. We have performed calculations in $sd$ shell with two $ab~initio$ approaches: in-medium similarity renormalization group (IM-SRG) and coupled-cluster (CC) theory. We have also performed calculations with phenomenological USDB interaction and chiral effective field theory based CEFT interaction. The results for rotational spectra and $B(E2;2_1^+\rightarrow 0_1^+)$ transitions are reported for even-mass isotopes. The IM-SRG and CC results are …
Continuum quasiparticle random-phase approximation for $(n,γ)$ reactions on neutron-rich nuclei: collectivity and resonances in low-energy cross section
The quadrupole vibrational modes of neutron-rich $N$=28 isotones ($^{48}$Ca, $^{46}$Ar, $^{44}$S and $^{42}$Si) are investigated using the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with several choice of energy density functionals, including nuclear pairing correlation. It is found that the quenching of $N$=28 shell gap and the proton holes in the $sd$-shell trigger quadrupole correlation and increase the collectivity of the low-lying 2$^+$ state in $^{46}$Ar. It is also found that the pairing correlation plays an important role to increase the collectivity. We also demonst…
Inelastic neutron scattering was used to study the low-lying nuclear structure of $^{132}$Xe. A comprehensive level scheme is presented, as well as new level lifetimes, multipole mixing ratios, branching ratios, and transition probabilities. Comparisons of these data as well as previously measured $E2$ strengths and $g$ factors are made with new shell-model calculations for $^{132,134,136}$Xe to explore the emergence of collectivity in the Xe isotopes with $N$ < 82 near the closed shell.
The quadrupole collectivity in Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Er, Yb, Hf and W nuclei with neutron numbers 122 $\le$ N $\le$ 156 is studied, both at the mean field level and beyond, using the Gogny energy density functional. Besides the robustness of the N=126 neutron shell closure, it is shown that the onset of static deformations in those isotopic chains with increasing neutron number leads to an enhanced stability and further extends the corresponding two-neutron driplines far beyond what could be expected from spherical calculations. Independence of the mean field predictions with respect to the particul…
We present a detailed discussion of the structure of the low-lying positive-parity energy spectrum of $^{12}$C from a no-core shell-model perspective. The approach utilizes a fraction of the usual shell-model space and extends its multi-shell reach via the symmetry-based no-core symplectic shell model (NCSpM) with a simple, physically-informed effective interaction. We focus on the ground-state rotational band, the Hoyle state and its $2^+$ and $4^+$ excitations, as well as the giant monopole $0^+$ resonance, which is a vibrational breathing mode of the ground state. This, in turn, allows us t…
We discuss symmetries of the spherical shell model that make contact with the geometric collective model of Bohr and Mottelson. The most celebrated symmetry of this kind is SU(3), which is the basis of Elliott's model of rotation. It corresponds to a deformed mean field induced by a quadrupole interaction in a single major oscillator shell N and can be generalized to include several major shells. As such, Elliott's SU(3) model establishes the link between the spherical shell model and the (quadrupole component of the) geometric collective model. We introduce the analogue symmetry induced by an…
Non-yrast, excited states in neutron-rich $^{186}$W were populated via inelastic-scattering reactions using beams of $^{136}$Xe nuclei accelerated to 725 and 800 MeV. Levels populated in the reactions were investigated via particle-$ γ$ coincidence techniques using the Gammasphere array of High-Purity Germanium detectors and the compact heavy-ion counter, CHICO2. The $ K^π = 2 ^{+} $ ($γ$), $ K^π = 0^{+}$ and $ K^π = 2^{-} $ (octupole) rotational side bands were extended to spins $ 14\hbar $, $ 12\hbar $, and $ 13\hbar $, respectively. A staggering pattern observed in the energies of levels in…
Background: Type II shell evolution has recently been identified as a microscopic cause for nuclear shape coexistence. Purpose: Establish a low-lying rotational band in 96-Zr. Methods: High-resolution inelastic electron scattering and a relative analysis of transition strengths are used. Results: The B(E2; 0_1^+ -> 2_2^+) value is measured and electromagnetic decay strengths of the secdond 2^+ state are deduced. Conclusions: Shape coexistence is established for 96-Zr. Type II shell evolution provides a systematic and quantitative mechanism to understand deformation at low excitation energies.
Nuclear fission of heavy (actinide) nuclei results predominantly in asymmetric mass-splits. Without quantum shells, which can give extra binding energy to these mass-asymmetric shapes, the nuclei would fission symmetrically. The strongest shell effects are in spherical nuclei, so naturally the spherical "doubly-magic" ${^{132}}$Sn nucleus (${Z=50}$ protons), was expected to play a major role. However, a systematic study of fission has shown that the heavy fragments are distributed around ${Z=52}$ to 56, indicating that ${^{132}}$Sn is not the only driver. Reconciling the strong spherical shell…
We report on the first experimental study of quadrupole collectivity in the very neutron-rich nuclei \nuc{47,48}{Ar} using intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation. These nuclei are located along the path from doubly-magic Ca to collective S and Si isotopes, a critical region of shell evolution and structural change. The deduced $B(E2)$ transition strengths are confronted with large-scale shell-model calculations in the $sdpf$ shell using the state-of-the-art SDPF-U and EPQQM effective interactions. The comparison between experiment and theory indicates that a shell-model description of Ar isoto…
Mixing of the shell model (SM) eigenstates due to the coupling via the common decay channel leads in many cases to the formation of a collective eigenstate which carries many features of the nearby decay channel. This generic mechanism in open quantum systems explains the phenomenological Ikeda diagram and generalizes it for various clusters/correlations in the vicinity of the respective cluster decay thresholds. The near-threshold collectivization of the SM states may also influence their electromagnetic decays. We discuss this phenomenon on the example of B(EL) decays of near-threshold 2+ st…
Enhanced proton-neutron interactions occur in heavy nuclei along a trajectory of approximately equal numbers of valence protons and neutrons. This is also closely aligned with the trajectory of the saturation of quadrupole deformation. The origin of these enhanced p-n interactions is discussed in terms of spatial overlaps of proton and neutron wave functions that are orbit-dependent. It is suggested for the first time that nuclear collectivity is driven by synchronized filling of protons and neutrons with orbitals having parallel spins, identical orbital and total angular momenta projections, …
I explore weakly-collective singly-closed shell nuclei with high-j shells where active valence neutrons and particle-particle correlations may be the dominant collective degree of freedom. The combination of large and close-lying proton and neutron pairing gaps extracted from experimental masses seems to charaterize the origin of the weak collectivity observed in Ni and Sn superfluids with $N\approx Z$. The trend of $E2$ transition strengths, i.e., $B(E2; 2^+_1\rightarrow 0^+_1)$ values, in these nuclei is predicted from proton and neutron pairing-gap information. The agreement with the Ni iso…

Applications of configuration mixing methods for nuclei near the proton and neutron drip lines are discussed. A short review of magic numbers is presented. Prospects for advances in the regions of four new "outposts" are highlighted: $^{28}$O, $^{42}$Si, $^{60}$Ca and $^{78}$Ni. Topics include: shell gaps, single-particle properties, islands-of-inversion, collectivity, neutron decay, neutron halos, two-proton decay, effective charge, and quenching in knockout reactions.
There is sparse direct experimental evidence that atomic nuclei can exhibit stable pear shapes arising from strong octupole correlations. In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole ($E3$) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in $^{222,228}$Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation. Beams of the radioactive radium isotopes were provided by the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The observed pattern of $E$3 matrix elements for different nuclear transitions is explained by describing $^{222}$Ra as pear…
Radioactive $^{129}$Sb, which can be treated as a proton plus semi-magic $^{128}$Sn core within the particle-core coupling scheme, was studied by Coulomb excitation. Reduced electric quadrupole transition probabilities, $B(E2)$, for the $2^+$ $\times$ $πg_{7/2}$ multiplet members and candidate $πd_{5/2}$ state were measured. The results indicate that the total electric quadrupole strength of $^{129}$Sb is a factor of 1.39(11) larger than the $^{128}$Sn core, which is in stark contrast to the expectations of the empirically successful particle-core coupling scheme. Shell-model calculations perf…
Fission of $^{180}$Hg produces mass asymmetric fragments which are expected to be influenced by deformed shell-effects at N=56 in the heavy fragment and Z=34 in the light fragment [G. Scamps and C. Simenel, arXiv:1904.01275 (2019)]. To investigate both shell-effects and to determine which one has the main influence on the asymmetry in the region of the $^{180}$Hg, we produce a systematic of Constraint-Hartree-Fock calculations in nuclei with similar N/Z ratio than the $^{178}$Pt. It is found that N=56 determines the asymmetry of systems in this region of the nuclear chart.
The neutron-rich isotopes $^{58-63}$Cr were produced for the first time at the ISOLDE facility and their masses were measured with the ISOLTRAP spectrometer. The new values are up to 300 times more precise than those in the literature and indicate significantly different nuclear structure from the new mass-surface trend. A gradual onset of deformation is found in this proton and neutron mid-shell region, which is a gateway to the second island of inversion around \emph{N}=40. In addition to comparisons with density-functional theory and large-scale shell-model calculations, we present predicti…
The lightest Xenon isotopes are studied in the framework of the Interacting Shell Model (ISM). The valence space comprises all the orbits lying between the magic closures N=Z=50 and N=Z=82. The calculations produce collective deformed structures of triaxial nature that encompass nicely the known experimental data. Predictions are made for the (still unknown) N=Z nucleus 108-Xe. The results are interpreted in terms of the competition between the quadrupole correlations enhanced by the pseudo-SU(3) structure of the positive parity orbits and the pairing correlations brought in by the 0h11/2 orbi…
We study the development of collectivity in the neutron-rich nuclei around $N=40$, where experimental and theoretical evidences suggest a rapid shape change from the spherical to the rotational regime, in analogy to what happens at the {\it island of inversion} surrounding $^{31}$Na. Theoretical calculations are performed within the interacting shell model framework in a large valence space, based on a $^{48}$Ca core which encompasses the full $pf$ shell for the protons and the $0f_{5/2}$, $1p_{3/2}$, $1p_{1/2}$, $0g_{9/2}$ and $1d_{5/2}$ orbits for the neutrons. The effective interaction is b…
We discuss emulators from the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell-model framework for studying the formation of alpha clustering and collective properties without effective charges. We present a new type of an emulator, one that utilizes the eigenvector continuation technique but is based on the use of symplectic symmetry considerations. This is achieved by using physically relevant degrees of freedom, namely, the symmetry-adapted basis, which exploits the almost perfect symplectic symmetry in nuclei. Specifically, we study excitation energies, point-proton root-mean-square radii, along w…
