In this paper, using techniques developed in our earlier works on the theory of mod-Gaussian convergence, we prove precise moderate and large deviation results for the logarithm of the characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix. In the case where the unitary matrix is chosen according to the Haar measure, the logarithms of the probabilities of fluctuations of order $A=O(N)$ of the logarithm of the characteristic polynomial have been estimated by Hughes, Keating and O'Connell. In this work we give an equivalent of the probabilities themselves (without the logarithms), and we do so for the more general case of a matrix from the circular $β$ ensemble for any parameter $β> 0$. In comparison to previous results from Féray-Méliot-Nikeghbali (2016) and Dal Borgo-Hovhannisyan-Rouault (2019), we considerably extend the range of fluctuations for which precise estimates can be written.
This article revisits the work by Ofer Zeitouni and Steve Zelditch on large deviations for the empirical measures of random orthogonal polynomials with i.i.d. Gaussian complex coefficients, and extends this result to real Gaussian coefficients. This article does not require any knowledge in geometry. For clarity, we focus on two classical cases: Kac polynomials and elliptic polynomials.
In the first part we study deviation of a polynomial from its mathematical expectation. This deviation can be estimated from above by Carbery--Wright inequality, so we investigate estimates of the deviation from below. We obtain such estimates in two different cases: for Gaussian measures and a polynomial of an arbitrary degree and for an arbitrary log-concave measure but only for polynomials of the second degree. In the second part we deals with isoperimetric inequality and the Poincaré inequality for probability measures on the real line that are images of the uniform distributions on convex…
We study one-dimensional nearest neighbour random walk in site-random environment. We establish precise (sharp) large deviations in the so-called ballistic regime, when the random walk drifts to the right with linear speed. In the sub-ballistic regime, when the speed is sublinear, we describe the precise probability of slowdown.
In this paper we study precise large deviations for the partial sums of a stationary sequence with a subexponential marginal distribution. Our main focus is on distributions which either have a regularly varying or a lognormal-type tail. We apply the results to prove limit theory for the maxima of the entries large sample covariance matrices.
We prove the universality of the large deviations principle for the empirical measures of zeros of random polynomials whose coefficients are i.i.d. random variables possessing a density with respect to the Lebesgue measure on C, R or R + , under the assumption that the density does not vanish too fast at zero and decays at least as exp --|x| $ρ$ , $ρ$ \textgreater{} 0, at infinity.
In this paper, we obtain some results on precise large deviations for non-random and random sums of widely dependent random variables with common dominatedly varying tail distribution or consistently varying tail distribution on $(-\infty,\infty)$. Then we apply the results to reinsurance and insurance and give some asymptotic estimates on proportional reinsurance, random-time ruin probability and the finite-time ruin probability.
Hawkes process is a class of simple point processes with self-exciting and clustering properties. Hawkes process has been widely applied in finance, neuroscience, social networks, criminology, seismology, and many other fields. In this paper, we study precise deviations for Hawkes processes for large time asymptotics, that strictly extends and improves the existing results in the literature. Numerical illustrations will also be provided.
In this paper, we investigate the precise local large deviation probabilities for random sums of independent real-valued random variables with a common distribution $F$, where $F(x+Δ)=F((x, x+T])$ is an $\mathcal{O}$-regularly varying function for some fixed constant $T>0$(finite or infinite). We also obtain some results on precise local large deviation probabilities for the claim surplus process of generalized risk models in which the premium income until time $t$ is simply assumed to be a nondecreasing and nonnegative stochastic process. In particular, the results we obtained are also valid …
We consider the branching process in random environment $\{Z_n\}_{n\geq 0}$, which is a~population growth process where individuals reproduce independently of each other with the reproduction law randomly picked at each generation. We describe precise asymptotics of upper large deviations, i.e. $\mathbb{P}[Z_n > e^{ρn}]$. Moreover in the subcritical case, under the Cramér condition on the mean of the reproduction law, we investigate large deviations-type estimates for the first passage time of the branching process in question and its total population size.
For suitable families of locally infinitely divisible Markov processes $\{ξ^{ε}_t\}_{0\leq t\leq T}$ with frequent small jumps depending on a small parameter $ε>0,$ precise asymptotics for large deviations of integral forms $\mathbb{E}^ε[\exp\{ε^{-1}F(ξ^ε)\}]$ are proved for smooth functionals $F.$ The main ingredient of the proof in this paper is a recent result regarding the asymptotic expansions of the expectations $\mathbb{E}^ε[G(ξ^ε)\}]$ for smooth $G.$ Several connections between these large deviation asymptotics and partial integro-differential equations are included as well.
The theorem of Furstenberg and Kesten provides a strong law of large numbers for the norm of a product of random matrices. This can be extended under various assumptions, covering nonnegative as well as invertible matrices, to a law of large numbers for the norm of a vector on which the matrices act. We prove corresponding precise large deviation results, generalizing the Bahadur-Rao theorem to this situation. Therefore, we obtain a third-order Edgeworth expansion for the cumulative distribution function of the vector norm. This result in turn relies on an application of the Nagaev-Guivarch me…
We consider a Cox process with Poisson shot noise intensity which has been widely applied in insurance, finance, queue theory, statistic, and many other fields. Cox process is flexible because its intensity depends on not only the time but also a stochastic process, it can be considered as a two step randomization procedure. Due to the structure of such models, a number of useful and general results can easily be established. In this paper, we study precise deviations for shot noise Cox process using the recent mod-$ϕ$ convergence method.
Let $(g_{n})_{n\geq 1}$ be a sequence of independent identically distributed $d\times d$ real random matrices with Lyapunov exponent $γ$. For any starting point $x$ on the unit sphere in $\mathbb R^d$, we deal with the norm $ | G_n x | $, where $G_{n}:=g_{n} \ldots g_{1}$. The goal of this paper is to establish precise asymptotics for large deviation probabilities $\mathbb P(\log | G_n x | \geq n(q+l))$, where $q>γ$ is fixed and $l$ is vanishing as $n\to \infty$. We study both invertible matrices and positive matrices and give analogous results for the couple $(X_n^x,\log | G_n x |)$ with targ…
Let $S_n$ be partial sums of an i.i.d. sequence $\{X_i\}$. We assume that $\mathbb{E} X_1 <0$ and $\mathbb{P}[X_1>0]>0$. In this paper we study the first passage time $$ τ_u = \inf\{n:\; S_n > u\}. $$ The classical Cramér's estimate of the ruin probability says that $$ \mathbb{P}[τ_u<\infty] \sim C e^{-α_0 u}\quad \text{as } u\to \infty, $$ for some parameter $α_0$. The aim of the paper is to describe precise large deviations of the first crossing by $S_n$ a linear boundary, more precisely for a fixed parameter $ρ$ we study asymptotic behavior of $\mathbb{P}\left[τ_u = \lfloor u/ρ\rfloor \righ…
We extend results of Zeitouni-Zelditch on large deviations principles for zeros of Gaussian random polynomials $s$ in one complex variable to certain non-Gaussian ensembles that we call $P(ϕ)_2$ random polynomials. The probability measures are of the form $e^{- S(f)} df$ where the actions $S(f)$ are finite dimensional analgoues of those of $P(ϕ)_2$ quantum field theory. The speed and rate function are the same as in the associated Gaussian case. As a corollary, we prove that the expected distribution of zeros in the $P(ϕ)_2$ ensembles tends to the same equilibrium measure as in the Gaussian ca…
We consider two-dimensional determinantal processes which are rotation-invariant and study the fluctuations of the number of points in disks. Based on the theory of mod-phi convergence, we obtain Berry-Esseen as well as precise moderate to large deviation estimates for these statistics. These results are consistent with the Coulomb gas heuristic from the physics literature. We also obtain functional limit theorems for the stochastic process $(\# D_r)_{r>0}$ when the radius $r$ of the disk $D_r$ is growing in different regimes. We present several applications to invariant determinantal process,…
We give abstract versions of the large deviation theorem for the distribution of zeros of polynomials and apply them to the characteristic polynomials of Hermitian random matrices. We obtain new estimates related to the local semi-circular law for the empirical spectral distribution of these matrices when the 4th moments of their entries are controlled.
We investigate the fluctuations and large deviations of the root of largest modulus in a model of random polynomial with independent complex Gaussian coefficients (Kac polynomials). The fluctuations were recently computed by R. Butez (arxiv 1704.02761) and involve a Fredholm determinant. The precise large deviations show a particular function defined by a series of mutiple integrals in the same vein.
Consider a strong Markov process in continuous time, taking values in some Polish state space. Recently, Douc, Fort and Guillin (2009) introduced verifiable conditions in terms of a supermartingale property implying an explicit control of modulated moments of hitting times. We show how this control can be translated into a control of polynomial moments of abstract regeneration times which are obtained by using the regeneration method of Nummelin, extended to the time-continuous context. As a consequence, if a $p-$th moment of the regeneration times exists, we obtain non asymptotic deviation bo…
We prove precise deviations results in the sense of Cramér and Petrov for the upper tail of the distribution of the maximal value for a special class of determinantal point processes that play an important role in random matrix theory. Here we cover all three regimes of moderate, large and superlarge deviations for which we determine the leading order description of the tail probabilities. As a corollary of our results we identify the region within the regime of moderate deviations for which the limiting Tracy-Widom law still predicts the correct leading order behavior. Our proofs use that the…
In this paper, we consider the distribution of the supremum of non-stationary Gaussian processes, and present a new theoretical result on the asymptotic behaviour of this distribution. Unlike previously known facts in this field, our main theorem yields the asymptotic representation of the corresponding distribution function with exponentially decaying remainder term. This result can be efficiently used for studying the projection density estimates, based, for instance, on Legendre polynomials. More precisely, we construct the sequence of accompanying laws, which approximates the distribution …
A sum rule is an identity connecting the entropy of a measure with coefficients involved in the construction of its orthogonal polynomials (Jacobi coefficients). Our paper is an extension of Gamboa, Nagel and Rouault (2016), where we have showed sum rules by using only probabilistic tools (namely the large deviations theory). Here, we prove large deviation principles for the weighted spectral measure of unitarily invariant random matrices in two general situations: firstly, when the equilibrium measure is not necessarily supported by a single interval and secondly, when the potential is a nonn…
We are dealing with the validity of a large deviation principle for a class of reaction-diffusion equations with polynomial nonlinearity, perturbed by a Gaussian random forcing. We are here interested in the regime where both the strength of the noise and its correlation are vanishing, on a length scale $ε$ and $δ(ε)$, respectively, with $0<ε,δ(ε)<<1$. We prove that, under the assumption that $ε$ and $δ(ε)$ satisfy a suitable scaling limit, a large deviation principle holds in the space of continuous trajectories with values both in the space of square-integrable functions and in Sobolev space…
We study a precise large deviation principle for a stationary regularly varying sequence of random variables. This principle extends the classical results of A.V. Nagaev (1969) and S.V. Nagaev (1979) for iid regularly varying sequences. The proof uses an idea of Jakubowski (1993,1997) in the context of centra limit theorems with infinite variance stable limits. We illustrate the principle for \sv\ models, functions of a Markov chain satisfying a polynomial drift condition and solutions of linear and non-linear stochastic recurrence equations.
We consider a system of classical particles confined in a box $Λ\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ with zero boundary conditions interacting via a stable and regular pair potential. Based on the validity of the cluster expansion for the canonical partition function in the high temperature - low density regime we prove moderate and precise large deviations from the mean value of the number of particles with respect to the grand-canonical Gibbs measure. In this way we have a direct method of computing both the exponential rate as well as the pre-factor and obtain explicit error terms. Estimates comparing with…
In this paper, we consider the linearly reinforced and the once-reinforced random walk models in the transient phase on trees. We show the large deviations for the upper tails for both models. We also show the exponential decay for the lower tail in the once-reinforced random walk model. On the other hand, the lower tail is in polynomial decay for the linearly reinforced random walk model.
We establish a large deviation principle for the empirical spectral measure of a sample covariance matrix with sub-Gaussian entries, which extends Bordenave and Caputo's result for Wigner matrices having the same type of entries [7]. To this aim, we need to establish an asymptotic freeness result for rectangular free convolution, more precisely, we give a bound in the subordination formula for information-plus-noise matrices.
We present large deviations principles for the moments of the empirical spectral measure of Wigner matrices and empirical measure of $β$-ensembles in three cases : the case of Wigner matrices without Gaussian tails, that is Wigner matrices whose entries have tail distributions decreasing as $e^{-ct^α}$, for some constant $c>0$ and with $α\in (0,2)$, the case of Gaussian Wigner matrices, and the case of $β$-ensembles associated with a convex potential with polynomial growth.
We study the large deviation behaviour of $S_n=\sum_{j=1}^n W_jZ_j$, where $(W_j)_{j \in \mathbb N}$ and $(Z_j)_{j \in \mathbb N}$ are sequences of real-valued, independent and identically distributed random variables satisfying certain moment conditions, independent of each other. More precisely, we prove a conditional strong large deviation result and describe the fluctuations of the random rate function through a functional central limit theorem.
We establish precise right-tail small deviation estimates for the largest eigenvalue of real symmetric and complex Hermitian matrices whose entries are independent random variables with uniformly bounded moments. The proof relies on a Green function comparison along a continuous interpolating matrix flow for a long time. Less precise estimates are also obtained in the left tail.
We discuss BSDE with drivers containing nonlinearities of the type $p(y)|z|$ and $p(y)|z|^2$ with $p$ a polynomial of any degree. Sufficient conditions are given for existence and uniqueness of solutions as well as comparison results. We then connect the results to the Markovian FBSDE setting, discussing applications in the theory of PDE perturbation and stating a result concerning a large deviations principle for the first component of the solution to the BSDE.
Precise asymptotics for moderate deviation probabilities are established for open convex sets in both the finite- and infinite-dimensional settings. Our results are based on the existence of dominating points for these sets, a related representation formula, and asymptotics for the integral term in this formula.
Consider a random walk in random environment on a supercritical Galton--Watson tree, and let $τ_n$ be the hitting time of generation $n$. The paper presents a large deviation principle for $τ_n/n$, both in quenched and annealed cases. Then we investigate the subexponential situation, revealing a polynomial regime similar to the one encountered in one dimension. The paper heavily relies on estimates on the tail distribution of the first regeneration time.
We prove that the largest and smallest root in modulus of random Kac polynomials have a non-universal behavior. They do not converge towards the edge of the support of the limiting distribution of the zeros. This non-universality is surprising as the large deviation principle for the empirical measure is universal. This is in sharp contrast with random matrix theory where the large deviation principle is non-universal but the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue are universal. We show that the modulus of the largest zero is heavy tailed, with a number of finite moments bounded from above by …
A quenched large deviation principle for Brownian motion in a non-negative, stationary potential is proved. A sufficient moment condition on the potential is given but unlike the results of Armstrong and Tran (2014) no regularity is assumed. The proof is based on a method developed by Sznitman (1994) for Brownian motion among Poissonian potential. In particular, the LDP holds for potentials with polynomially decaying correlations such as the classical potentials studied by L. Pastur (1977) and R. Fukushima (2008) and the potentials recently introduced by H. Lacoin (2012).
We study the limiting behavior of the $k$-th eigenvalue $x_k$ of unitary invariant ensembles with Freud-type and uniform convex potentials. As both $k$ and $n-k$ tend to infinity, we obtain Gaussian fluctuations for $x_k$ in the bulk and soft edge cases, respectively. Multi-dimensional central limit theorems, as well as moderate deviations, are also proved. This work generalizes earlier results in the GUE and unitary invariant ensembles with monomial potentials of even degree. In particular, we obtain the precise asymptotics of corresponding Christoffel-Darboux kernels as well.
We establish, under the Cramer exponential moment condition in a neighbourhood of zero, the Extended Large Deviation Principle for the Random Walk and the Compound Poisson processes in the metric space $\V$ of functions of finite variation on $[0,\infty)$ with the modified Borovkov metric $\r(f,g)= \r_\B(\hat{f},\hat{g}) $, where $ \hat f(t)= f(t)/(1+t)$, $t\in \R$, and $\r_\B$ is the Borovkov metric. LDP in this space is "more precise" than that with the usual metric of uniform convergence on compacts.
For a natural extension of the circular unitary ensemble of order n, we study as n tends to infinity, the asymptotic behavior of the sequence of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the spectral measure. The last term of this sequence is the characteristic polynomial. After taking logarithm and rescaling, we obtain a process indexed by t in [0,1]. We show that it converges to a deterministic limit, and we describe the fluctuations and the large deviations.
We consider a class of tempered subordinators, namely a class of subordinators with one-dimensional marginal tempered distributions which belong to a family studied in [3]. The main contribution in this paper is a non-central moderate deviations result. More precisely we mean a class of large deviation principles that fill the gap between the (trivial) weak convergence of some non-Gaussian identically distributed random variables to their common law, and the convergence of some other related random variables to a constant. Some other minor results concern large deviations for the inverse of th…
In this paper, we use the framework of mod-$ϕ$ convergence to prove precise large or moderate deviations for quite general sequences of real valued random variables $(X_{n})_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$, which can be lattice or non-lattice distributed. We establish precise estimates of the fluctuations $P[X_{n} \in t_{n}B]$, instead of the usual estimates for the rate of exponential decay $\log( P[X_{n}\in t_{n}B])$. Our approach provides us with a systematic way to characterise the normality zone, that is the zone in which the Gaussian approximation for the tails is still valid. Besides, the residue f…
The purpose of the present paper is to establish moderate deviation principles for a rather general class of random variables fulfilling certain bounds of the cumulants. We apply a celebrated lemma of the theory of large deviations probabilities due to Rudzkis, Saulis and Statulevicius. The examples of random objects we treat include dependency graphs, subgraph-counting statistics in Erdős-Rényi random graphs and $U$-statistics. Moreover, we prove moderate deviation principles for certain statistics appearing in random matrix theory, namely characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices…
We establish a large deviation theorem for the empirical spectral distribution of random covariance matrices whose entries are independent random variables with mean 0, variance 1 and having controlled forth moments. Some new properties of Laguerre polynomials are also given.
We study the large deviations of one-dimensional excited random walks. We prove a large deviation principle for both the hitting times and the position of the random walk and give a qualitative description of the respective rate functions. When the excited random walk is transient with positive speed $v_0$, then the large deviation rate function for the position of the excited random walk is zero on the interval $[0,v_0]$ and so probabilities such as $P(X_n < nv)$ for $v \in (0,v_0)$ decay subexponentially. We show that rate of decay for such slowdown probabilities is polynomial of the order $…
