We are dealing with the validity of a large deviation principle for a class of reaction-diffusion equations with polynomial nonlinearity, perturbed by a Gaussian random forcing. We are here interested in the regime where both the strength of the noise and its correlation are vanishing, on a length scale $ε$ and $δ(ε)$, respectively, with $0<ε,δ(ε)<<1$. We prove that, under the assumption that $ε$ and $δ(ε)$ satisfy a suitable scaling limit, a large deviation principle holds in the space of continuous trajectories with values both in the space of square-integrable functions and in Sobolev spaces of negative exponent. Our result is valid, without any restriction on the degree of the polynomial nor on the space dimension.
We are dealing with the validity of a large deviation principle for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation, with periodic boundary conditions, perturbed by a Gaussian random forcing. We are here interested in the regime where both the strength of the noise and its correlation are vanishing, on a length scale $\e$ and $\d(\e)$, respectively, with $0<\e,\ \d(\e)<<1$. Depending on the relationship between $\e$ and $\d(\e)$ we will prove the validity of the large deviation principle in different functional spaces.
We consider the superposition of a symmetric simple exclusion dynamics, speeded-up in time, with a spin-flip dynamics in a one-dimensional interval with periodic boundary conditions. We prove the hydrostatics and the dynamical large deviation principle.
The large deviation principle on phase space is proved for a class of Markov processes known as random population dynamics with catastrophes. In the paper we study the process which corresponds to the random population dynamics with linear growth and uniform catastrophes, where an eliminating portion of the population is chosen uniformly. The large deviation result provides an optimal trajectory of large fluctuation: it shows how the large fluctuations occur for this class of processes.
In proving large deviation estimates, the lower bound for open sets and upper bound for compact sets are essentially local estimates. On the other hand, the upper bound for closed sets is global and compactness of space or an exponential tightness estimate is needed to establish it. In dealing with the occupation measure $L_t(A)=\frac{1}{t}\int_0^t{\1}_A(W_s) \d s$ of the $d$ dimensional Brownian motion, which is not positive recurrent, there is no possibility of exponential tightness. The space of probability distributions $\mathcal {M}_1(\R^d)$ can be compactified by replacing the usual topo…
We derive moderate deviation principles for the trajectory of the empirical magnetization of the standard Curie-Weiss model via a general analytic approach based on convergence of generators and uniqueness of viscosity solutions for associated Hamilton-Jacobi equations. The moderate asymptotics depend crucially on the phase under consideration.
By examining the deterministic limit of a general $ε$-dependent generator for Markovian dynamics, which includes the continuous Fokker-Planck equations and discrete chemical master equations as two special cases, the intrinsic connections among mesoscopic stochastic dynamics, deterministic ODEs or PDEs, large deviations rate function, and macroscopic thermodynamic potential are established. Our result not only solves the long-lasting question on the origin of entropy function in classical irreversible thermodynamics, but also reveals an emergent feature that arises automatically during the det…
We study a model of stochastic evolutionary game dynamics in which the probabilities that agents choose suboptimal actions are dependent on payoff consequences. We prove a sample path large deviation principle, characterizing the rate of decay of the probability that the sample path of the evolutionary process lies in a prespecified set as the population size approaches infinity. We use these results to describe excursion rates and stationary distribution asymptotics in settings where the mean dynamic admits a globally attracting state, and we compute these rates explicitly for the case of log…
We study small noise large deviation asymptotics for stochastic differential equations with a multiplicative noise given as a fractional Brownian motion $B^H$ with Hurst parameter $H>\frac12$. The solutions of the stochastic differential equations are defined pathwise under appropriate conditions on the coefficients. The ingredients in the proof of the large deviation principle, which include a variational representation for nonnegative functionals of fractional Brownian motions and a general sufficient condition for a LDP for a collection of functionals of a fractional Brownian motions, have …
We study a system of interacting particles that randomly react to form new particles. The reaction flux is the rescaled number of reactions that take place in a time interval. We prove a dynamic large-deviation principle for the reaction fluxes under general assumptions that include mass-action kinetics. This result immediately implies the dynamic large deviations for the empirical concentration.
We prove Freidlin-Wentzell type large deviation principles for various rescaled models in populations dynamics that have immigration and possibly harvesting: birth-death processes, Galton-Watson trees, epidemic SI models, and prey-predator models. The proofs are carried out using a general analytic approach based on the well-posedness of a class of associated Hamilton-Jacobi equations. The notable feature for these Hamilton-Jacobi equations is that the Hamiltonian can be discontinuous at the boundary. We prove a well-posedness result for a large class of Hamilton-Jacobi equations corresponding…
We consider the superposition of a symmetric simple exclusion dynamics, speeded-up in time, with a spin-flip dynamics in a one-dimensional interval with periodic boundary conditions. We prove the large deviations principle for the empirical measure under the stationary state. We deduce from this result that the stationary state is concentrated on the stationary solutions of the hydrodynamic equation which are stable.
In this paper we analyze a dynamic recursive extension of the (static) notion of a deviation measure and its properties. We study distribution invariant deviation measures and show that the only dynamic deviation measure which is law invariant and recursive is the variance. We also solve the problem of optimal risk-sharing generalizing classical risk-sharing results for variance through a dynamic inf-convolution problem involving a transformation of the original dynamic deviation measures.
Random walk in a dynamic i.i.d. beta random environment, conditioned to escape at an atypical velocity, converges to a Doob transform of the original walk. The Doob-transformed environment is correlated in time, i.i.d. in space, and its marginal density function is a product of a beta density and a hypergeometric function. Under its averaged distribution the transformed walk obeys the wandering exponent 2/3 that agrees with Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality. The harmonic function in the Doob transform comes from a Busemann-type limit and appears as an extremal in a variational problem for the q…
We consider random walk with bounded jumps on a hypercubic lattice of arbitrary dimension in a dynamic random environment. The environment is temporally independent and spatially translation invariant. We study the rate functions of the level-3 averaged and quenched large deviation principles from the point of view of the particle. In the averaged case the rate function is a specific relative entropy, while in the quenched case it is a Donsker-Varadhan type relative entropy for Markov processes. We relate these entropies to each other and seek to identify the minimizers of the level-3 to level…
In this paper, we establish a moderate deviations principle for the Langevin dynamics with strong damping. The weak convergence approach plays an important role in the proof.
We derive a large deviation principle for the space-time evolution of users in a relay network that are unable to connect due to capacity constraints. The users are distributed according to a Poisson point process with increasing intensity in a bounded domain, whereas the relays are positioned deterministically with given limiting density. The preceding work on capacity for relay networks by the authors describes the highly simplified setting where users can only enter but not leave the system. In the present manuscript we study the more realistic situation where users leave the system after a…
We consider a dynamic Erdős-Rényi random graph (ERRG) on $n$ vertices in which each edge switches on at rate $λ$ and switches off at rate $μ$, independently of other edges. The focus is on the analysis of the evolution of the associated empirical graphon in the limit as $n\to\infty$. Our main result is a large deviation principle (LDP) for the sample path of the empirical graphon observed until a fixed time horizon. The rate is $\binom{n}{2}$, the rate function is a specific action integral on the space of graphon trajectories. We apply the LDP to identify (i) the most likely path that startin…
We obtain large and moderate deviation estimates, as well as concentration inequalities, for a class of nonuniformly expanding maps with stretched exponential decay of correlations. In the large deviation regime, we also exhibit examples showing that the obtained upper bounds are essentially optimal.
In this paper we propose the notion of dynamic deviation measure, as a dynamic time-consistent extension of the (static) notion of deviation measure. To achieve time-consistency we require that a dynamic deviation measures satisfies a generalised conditional variance formula. We show that, under a domination condition, dynamic deviation measures are characterised as the solutions to a certain class of backward SDEs. We establish for any dynamic deviation measure an integral representation, and derive a dual characterisation result in terms of additively $m$-stable dual sets. Using this notion …
We study the dynamics of smooth interval maps with non-flat critical points. For every such a map that is topologically exact, we establish the full (level-2) Large Deviation Principle for empirical means. In particular, the Large Deviation Principle holds for every non\nobreakdash-renormalizable quadratic map. This includes the maps without physical measure found by Hofbauer and Keller, and challenges the widely-shared view of the Large Deviation Principle as a refinement of laws of large numbers.
Using the weak convergence approach to large deviations, we formulate and prove the large deviation principle (LDP) for W-random graphs in the cut-norm topology. This generalizes the LDP for Erdős-R{\' e}nyi random graphs by Chatterjee and Varadhan. Furthermore, we translate the LDP for random graphs to a class of interacting dynamical systems on such graphs. To this end, we demonstrate that the solutions of the dynamical models depend continuously on the underlying graphs with respect to the cut-norm and apply the contraction principle.

In this paper, we present a novel extension to the classical path coupling method to statistical mechanical models which we refer to as aggregate path coupling. In conjunction with large deviations estimates, we use this aggregate path coupling method to prove rapid mixing of Glauber dynamics for a large class of statistical mechanical models, including models that exhibit discontinuous phase transitions which have traditionally been more difficult to analyze rigorously. The parameter region for rapid mixing for the generalized Curie-Weiss-Potts model is derived as a new application of the agg…
We present a mathematical theory of dynamical fluctuations for the hard sphere gas in the Boltzmann-Grad limit. We prove that: (1) fluctuations of the empirical measure from the solution of the Boltzmann equation, scaled with the square root of the average number of particles, converge to a Gaussian process driven by the fluctuating Boltzmann equation, as predicted in [67]; (2) large deviations are exponentially small in the average number of particles and are characterized, under regularity assumptions, by a large deviation functional as previously obtained in [61] for dynamics with stochasti…
We consider a stochastic interacting vortex system of $N$ particles, approximating the vorticity formulation of 2-D Navier-Stokes equation on torus. The singular interaction kernel is given by the Biot-Savart law. We only require the initial state to have finite energy, and obtain a sample-path large deviation principle for the empirical measure when the number of vortices goes to infinity. The rate function is characterized by an explicit formula supporting on sample paths with finite energy and finite integral of $L^2$ norms over time. The proof utilizes a symmetrization technique for the re…
