Random walk in a dynamic i.i.d. beta random environment, conditioned to escape at an atypical velocity, converges to a Doob transform of the original walk. The Doob-transformed environment is correlated in time, i.i.d. in space, and its marginal density function is a product of a beta density and a hypergeometric function. Under its averaged distribution the transformed walk obeys the wandering exponent 2/3 that agrees with Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality. The harmonic function in the Doob transform comes from a Busemann-type limit and appears as an extremal in a variational problem for the quenched large deviation rate function.
The Levy Walk is the process with continuous sample paths which arises from consecutive linear motions of i.i.d. lengths with i.i.d. directions. Assuming speed 1 and motions in the domain of beta-stable attraction, we prove functional limit theorems and derive governing pseudo-differential equations for the law of the walker's position. Both Levy Walk and its limit process are continuous and ballistic in the case beta in (0,1). In the case beta in (1,2), the scaling limit of the process is beta-stable and hence discontinuous. This case exhibits an interesting situation in which scaling exponen…
We study the probability that one beta-distributed random variable exceeds the maximum of two others, allowing all three to have general parameters. This amounts to studying Euler transforms of products of two incomplete beta functions. We provide a closed form for the general problem in terms of Kampé de Fériet functions and a variety of simpler closed forms in special cases. The results are applied to derive the moments of the maximum of two independent beta-distributed random variables and to find inner products of incomplete beta functions. Restricted to positive integer parameters, our re…
We prove that the Beta random walk has second order cubic fluctuations from the large deviation principle of the GUE Tracy-Widom type for arbitrary values $\upalpha>0$ and $\upbeta>0$ of the parameters of the Beta distribution, removing previous restrictions on their values. Furthermore, we prove that the GUE Tracy-Widom fluctuations still hold in the intermediate disorder regime. We also show that any random walk in space-time random environment that matches certain moments with the Beta random walk also has GUE Tracy-Widom fluctuations in the intermediate disorder regime. As a corollary we s…
We investigate first-passage statistics of an ensemble of N noninteracting random walks on a line. Starting from a configuration in which all particles are located in the positive half-line, we study S_n(t), the probability that the nth rightmost particle remains in the positive half-line up to time t. This quantity decays algebraically, S_n (t) ~ t^{-beta_n}, in the long-time limit. Interestingly, there is a family of nontrivial first-passage exponents, beta_1<beta_2<...<beta_{N-1}; the only exception is the two-particle case where beta_1=1/3. In the N-->infinity limit, however, the exponents…
We introduce an exactly-solvable model of random walk in random environment that we call the Beta RWRE. This is a random walk in $\mathbb{Z}$ which performs nearest neighbour jumps with transition probabilities drawn according to the Beta distribution. We also describe a related directed polymer model, which is a limit of the $q$-Hahn interacting particle system. Using a Fredholm determinant representation for the quenched probability distribution function of the walker's position, we are able to prove second order cube-root scale corrections to the large deviation principle satisfied by the w…
For every 3/4 <= beta < 1 we construct a finitely generated group so that the expected distance of the simple random walk from its starting point is within a constant factor of n^beta. In fact, the speed can be set precisely to equal any nice prescribed function up to a constant factor.
We consider random walks on the nonnegative integers in a space-time dependent random environment. We assume that transition probabilities are given by independent $\mathrm{Beta}(μ,μ)$ distributed random variables, with a specific behaviour at the boundary, controlled by an extra parameter $η$. We show that this model is exactly solvable and prove a formula for the mixed moments of the random heat kernel. We then provide two formulas that allow us to study the large-scale behaviour. The first involves a Fredholm Pfaffian, which we use to prove a local limit theorem describing how the boundary …
The jump processes W(t) on [0,\infty[ with transitions w -> alpha w at rate b*w^beta (0 =< alpha =< 1, b>0, beta>0) are considered. Their moments are shown to decay not faster than algebraically for t -> \infty, and an equilibrium probability density is found for a rescaled process U = (t + k)^{-beta} W. A corresponding birth process is discussed.
We examine diffusion-limited aggregation generated by a random walk on Z with long jumps. We derive upper and lower bounds on the growth rate of the aggregate as a function of the number moments a single step of the walk has. Under various regularity conditions on the tail of the step distribution, we prove that the diameter grows as n^{beta+o(1)}, with an explicitly given beta. The growth rate of the aggregate is shown to have three phase transitions, when the walk steps have finite third moment, finite variance, and, conjecturally, finite half moment.
We consider the continuous time version of the Random Walk Pinning Model (RWPM), studied in [5,6,7]. Given a fixed realization of a random walk Y$ on Z^d with jump rate rho (that plays the role of the random medium), we modify the law of a random walk X on Z^d with jump rate 1 by reweighting the paths, giving an energy reward proportional to the intersection time L_t(X,Y)=\int_0^t \ind_{X_s=Y_s}\dd s: the weight of the path under the new measure is exp(beta L_t(X,Y)), beta in R. As beta increases, the system exhibits a delocalization/localization transition: there is a critical value beta_c, s…
We study records generated by Brownian particles in one dimension. Specifically, we investigate an ordinary random walk and define the record as the maximal position of the walk. We compare the record of an individual random walk with the mean record, obtained as an average over infinitely many realizations. We term the walk "superior" if the record is always above average, and conversely, the walk is said to be "inferior" if the record is always below average. We find that the fraction of superior walks, S, decays algebraically with time, S ~ t^(-beta), in the limit t --> infty, and that the …
We study the limit behaviour of a class of random walk models taking values in the $d$-dimensional unit standard simplex, $d\ge 1$, defined as follows. From an interior point $z$, the process chooses one of the $d+1$ vertices of the simplex, with probabilities depending on $z$, and then the particle randomly jumps to a new location $z'$ on the segment connecting $z$ to the chosen vertex. In some specific cases, using properties of the Beta distribution, we prove that the limiting distributions of the Markov chain are, in fact, Dirichlet. We also consider a related history-dependent random walk…
The paper considers excited random walks (ERWs) on integers in i.i.d. environments with a bounded number of excitations per site. The emphasis is primarily on the critical case for the transition between recurrence and transience which occurs when the total expected drift $δ$ at each site of the environment is equal to 1 in absolute value. Several crucial estimates for ERWs fail in the critical case and require a separate treatment. The main results discuss the depth and duration of excursions from the origin for $|δ|=1$ as well as occupation times of negative and positive semi-axes and scalin…
We consider the transition probabilities for random walks in $1+1$ dimensional space-time random environments (RWRE). For critically tuned weak disorder we prove a sharp large deviation result: after appropriate rescaling, the transition probabilities for the RWRE evaluated in the large deviation regime, converge to the solution to the stochastic heat equation (SHE) with multiplicative noise (the logarithm of which is the KPZ equation). We apply this to the exactly solvable Beta RWRE and additionally present a formal derivation of the convergence of certain moment formulas for that model to th…
We consider a process of noncolliding $q$-exchangeable random walks on $\mathbb{Z}$ making steps $0$ (straight) and $-1$ (down). A single random walk is called $q$-exchangeable if under an elementary transposition of the neighboring steps (down, straight) $\to$ (straight, down) the probability of the trajectory is multiplied by a parameter $q\in(0,1)$. Our process of $m$ noncolliding $q$-exchangeable random walks is obtained from the independent $q$-exchangeable walks via the Doob's $h$-transform for a certain nonnegative eigenfunction $h$ with the eigenvalue less than $1$. The system of $m$ w…
We study how the order of N independent random walks in one dimension evolves with time. Our focus is statistical properties of the inversion number m, defined as the number of pairs that are out of sort with respect to the initial configuration. In the steady-state, the distribution of the inversion number is Gaussian with the average <m>~N^2/4 and the standard deviation sigma N^{3/2}/6. The survival probability, S_m(t), which measures the likelihood that the inversion number remains below m until time t, decays algebraically in the long-time limit, S_m t^{-beta_m}. Interestingly, there is a …
We study the percolative properties of random interlacements on the product of G with the integer line Z, when G is a weighted graph satisfying certain sub-Gaussian estimates attached to the parameters alpha > 1, measuring the volume growth on G, and beta between 2 and alpha + 1, measuring the sub-diffusive nature of the random walk on G. We develop decoupling inequalities, which are a key tool in showing that the critical level u_* for the percolation of the vacant set of random interlacements is always finite in our set-up, and that it is positive when alpha \geq 1 + beta/2. We also obtain s…
In this paper we study a parametric class of stochastic processes to model both fast and slow anomalous diffusion. This class, called generalized grey Brownian motion (ggBm), is made up off self-similar with stationary increments processes (H-sssi) and depends on two real parameters alpha in (0,2) and beta in (0,1]. It includes fractional Brownian motion when alpha in (0,2) and beta=1, and time-fractional diffusion stochastic processes when alpha=beta in (0,1). The latters have marginal probability density function governed by time-fractional diffusion equations of order beta. The ggBm is defi…
We consider n-point sticky Brownian motions: a family of n diffusions that evolve as independent Brownian motions when they are apart, and interact locally so that the set of coincidence times has positive Lebesgue measure with positive probability. These diffusions can also be seen as n random motions in a random environment whose distribution is given by so-called stochastic flows of kernels. For a specific type of sticky interaction, we prove exact formulas characterizing the stochastic flow and show that in the large deviations regime, the random fluctuations of these stochastic flows are …
The position $x(t)$ of a particle diffusing in a one-dimensional uncorrelated and time dependent random medium is simply Gaussian distributed in the typical direction, i.e. along the ray $x=v_0 t$, where $v_0$ is the average drift. However, it has been found that it exhibits at large time sample to sample fluctuations characteristic of the KPZ universality class when observed in an atypical direction, i.e. along the ray $x = v t$ with $v \neq v_0$. Here we show, from exact solutions, that in the moderate deviation regime $x - v_0 t \propto t^{3/4}$ these fluctuations are precisely described by…
