We study the three-point energy correlator (EEEC), defined as a matrix element of a product of three energy detectors at different locations on the celestial sphere. Lorentz symmetry implies that the EEEC can be decomposed into special functions called celestial blocks. We compute three-point celestial blocks in an expansion around the collinear limit, where the three detectors approach each other on the celestial sphere. The leading term is a traditional $d{-}2$-dimensional four-point conformal block, and thus the collinear EEEC behaves like a conformally-invariant four-point function in $d{-}2$ dimensions. We obtain the coefficients of the conformal block decomposition for the collinear EEEC at leading nontrivial order in weakly-coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and QCD. These data allow us to make certain all-orders predictions for the collinear EEEC in various kinematic limits, including the OPE limit and the double lightcone limit. We also study Ward identities satisfied by the EEEC and compute contact terms in the EEEC in weakly-coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. Finally, we study the celestial block expansion of the EEEC in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM at strong coupling, determining celestial block coefficients to leading and first subleading order at large $λ$.
In a recent paper, here referred to as part I, we considered the celestial four-gluon amplitude with one gluon represented by the shadow transform of the corresponding primary field operator. This correlator is ill-defined because it contains branch points related to the presence of conformal blocks with complex spin. In this work, we adopt a procedure similar to minimal models and construct a single-valued completion of the shadow correlator, in the limit when the shadow is "soft." By following the approach of Dotsenko and Fateev, we obtain an integral representation of such a single-valued c…
Celestial holography expresses $\mathcal{S}$-matrix elements as correlators in a CFT living on the night sky. Poincaré invariance imposes additional selection rules on the allowed positions of operators. As a consequence, $n$-point correlators are only supported on certain patches of the celestial sphere, depending on the labeling of each operator as incoming/outgoing. Here we initiate a study of the celestial geometry, examining the kinematic support of celestial amplitudes for different crossing channels. We give simple geometric rules for determining this support. For $n\ge 5$, we can view …
In celestial holography, four-dimensional scattering amplitudes are considered as two-dimensional conformal correlators of a putative two-dimensional celestial conformal field theory (CCFT). The simplest way of converting momentum space amplitudes into CCFT correlators is by taking their Mellin transforms with respect to light-cone energies. For massless particles, like gluons, however, such a construction leads to three-point and four-point correlators that vanish everywhere except for a measure zero hypersurface of celestial coordinates. This is due to the four-dimensional momentum conservat…
Quantitative theoretical techniques for understanding the substructure of jets at the LHC enable new insights into the dynamics of QCD, and novel approaches to search for new physics. Recently, there has been a program to reformulate jet substructure in terms of correlation functions, $\langle \mathcal{E}(\vec n_1) \mathcal{E}(\vec n_2) \cdots \mathcal{E}(\vec n_k) \rangle$, of light-ray operators, $\mathcal{E}(\vec n)$, allowing the application of techniques developed in the study of Conformal Field Theories (CFTs). In this paper we further develop these techniques in the particular context o…
We propose a new program for computing a certain integrand of scattering amplitudes of four-dimensional gauge theories which we call the \textit{form factor integrand}, starting from 6d holomorphic theories on twistor space. We show that the form factor integrands can be expressed as sums of products of 1.) correlators of a 2d chiral algebra, related to the algebra of asymptotic symmetries uncovered recently in the celestial holography program, and 2.) OPE coefficients of a 4d non-unitary CFT. We prove that conformal blocks of the chiral algebras are in one-to-one correspondence with local ope…
We study tree-level celestial amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory -- Mellin transforms of multi-gluon scattering amplitudes that convert them into the correlators of conformal primary fields on two-dimensional celestial sphere. By using purely field-theoretical methods, we show that the soft conformal limit of celestial amplitudes, in which one of the primary field operators associated to gauge bosons becomes a dimension one current, is dominated by the contributions of low-energy soft particles. This result confirms conclusions reached by using Yang-Mills theory formulated in curvilinear coordina…
We discuss the properties of recently constructed "single-valued" celestial four-gluon amplitudes. We show that the amplitude factorizes into the "current" part and the "scalar" part. The current factor is given by the group-dependent part of the Wess-Zumino-Witten correlator of four holomorphic currents with a non-vanishing level of Kač-Moody algebra. The scalar factor can be expressed in terms of a complex integral of the Koba-Nielsen form, similar to the integrals describing four-point correlators in Coulomb gas models and, more generally, in the infinite central charge limit of Liouville t…
Celestial holography proposes a duality between the gravitational $\mathcal{S}$-matrix and correlators in a conformal field theory living on the celestial sphere. In this white paper, solicited for the 2022 Snowmass process, we review the motivation from asymptotic symmetries, fundamentals of the proposed holographic dictionary, potential applications to experiment and theory, and some important open questions.
The 4D 4-point scattering amplitude of massless scalars via a massive exchange is expressed in a basis of conformal primary particle wavefunctions. This celestial amplitude is expanded in a basis of 2D conformal partial waves on the unitary principal series, and then rewritten as a sum over 2D conformal blocks via contour deformation. The conformal blocks include intermediate exchanges of spinning light-ray states, as well as scalar states with positive integer conformal weights. The conformal block prefactors are found as expected to be quadratic in the celestial OPE coefficients.
We compute the Mellin transforms of various two-dimensional integrable $S$-matrices, providing the first explicit, non-perturbative realizations of celestial CFT. In two dimensions, the Mellin transform is simply the Fourier transform in rapidity space, and the "celestial correlator" has no position dependence. The simplified setting allows us to study the analytic properties of CCFT correlators exactly as a function of the conformal dimensions. We find that the correlators exist as real distributions of the conformal weights, with asymptotics controlled by the mass spectrum and three-point co…
We explore the celestial holography proposal for non-trivial asymptotically flat backgrounds including the Coulomb field of a static and spinning point charge, their gravitational counterparts described by the Schwarzschild and Kerr metrics, as well as the Aichelburg-Sexl shockwave and spinning shockwave geometries and their electromagnetic cousins. We compute celestial two-point amplitudes on these Kerr-Schild type backgrounds which have the desirable feature, due to the presence of an external source, that they are non-vanishing for general operator positions and are not constrained by the k…
We compute the four-point correlator of two gluon light-ray operators and two gluon primaries from the four-gluon celestial amplitude in $(2,2)$ signature spacetime. The correlator is non-distributional and allows us to verify that light-ray operators appear in the OPE of two gluon primaries. We also carry out a conformal block decomposition of the terms involving the exchange of gluon operators.
The all-loop resummation of SU$(N)$ gauge theory amplitudes is known to factorize into an IR-divergent (soft and collinear) factor and a finite (hard) piece. The divergent factor is universal, whereas the hard function is a process-dependent quantity. We prove that this factorization persists for the corresponding celestial amplitudes. Moreover, the soft/collinear factor becomes a scalar correlator of the product of renormalized Wilson lines defined in terms of celestial data. Their effect on the hard amplitude is a shift in the scaling dimensions by an infinite amount, proportional to the cus…
Starting from the defining two-point and three-point functions of Celestial CFTs, Euclidean integral blocks are constructed for the OPE of scalar primaries. In their integral form they can alternatively be fixed using Poincaré symmetry acting on both massless and massive states. Subsequently, an analytic continuation is done to define the Lorentzian version of the correlation functions and the OPE blocks as valued on the $(1,1)$ cylinder, the universal cover of the recently studied celestial torus. The continuation is essentially the same that is used in the derivation of the KLT relations for…
In celestial conformal field theory, gluons are represented by primary fields with dimensions $Δ=1+iλ$, $λ\in\mathbb{R}$ and spin $J=\pm 1$, in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. All two- and three-point correlation functions of these fields are zero as a consequence of four-dimensional kinematic constraints. Four-point correlation functions contain delta-function singularities enforcing planarity of four-particle scattering events. We relax these constraints by taking a shadow transform of one field and perform conformal block decomposition of the corresponding correlators. We com…
Infrared divergences in perturbative gravitational scattering amplitudes have been recently argued to be governed by the two-point function of the supertranslation Goldstone mode on the celestial sphere. We show that the form of this celestial two-point function simply derives from an effective action that also controls infrared divergences in the symplectic structure of General Relativity with asymptotically flat boundary conditions. This effective action finds its natural place in a path integral formulation of a celestial conformal field theory, as we illustrate by re-deriving the infrared …
The functional structure of celestial amplitudes as constrained by Poincaré symmetry is investigated in $2,3,$ and $4$-point cases for massless external particles of various spin, as well as massive external scalars. Functional constraints and recurrence relations are found (akin to the findings in arXiv:1901.01622) that must be obeyed by the respective permissible correlator structures and function coefficients. In specific three-point cases involving massive scalars the resulting recurrence relations can be solved, e.g. reproducing purely from symmetry a three-point function coefficient know…

We study the celestial description of the $O(N)$ sigma model in the large $N$ limit as introduced by Coleman, Jackiw and Politzer. Focusing on three dimensions, we analyze the implications of a UV complete, all-loop order 4-point amplitude of pions in terms of correlation functions defined on the celestial circle. We find these retain many key features from the previously studied tree-level case, such as their relation to Generalized Free Field theories and crossing-symmetry, but also incorporate new properties such as IR/UV softness and S-matrix metastable states. In particular, to understand…
In the present work, we study celestial correlators of light transformed gluon operators at tree level. We also discuss the transformation of light transformed operators under the action of 4D translations. The two, three and four-point functions arising from MHV amplitudes in terms of light transformed operators satisfy translation invariance constraints, are non-distributional and contain ordinary CFT power law terms. There is a new channel dependent term in the three point function. We show that the three-point light transformed correlation function is conformally covariant after contributi…
The generalized Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations of irrational conformal field theory provide a uniform description of rational and irrational conformal field theory. Starting from the known high-level solution of these equations, we first construct the high-level conformal blocks and correlators of all the affine-Sugawara and coset constructions on simple g. Using intuition gained from these cases, we then identify a simple class of irrational processes whose high-level blocks and correlators we are also able to construct.
We study scattering amplitudes in the shadow conformal primary basis, which satisfies the same defining properties as the original conformal primary basis and has many advantages over it. The shadow celestial amplitudes exhibit locality manifestly on the celestial sphere, and behave like correlation functions in conformal field theory under the operator product expansion (OPE) limit. We study the OPE limits for three-point shadow celestial amplitude, and general $2\to n-2$ shadow celestial amplitudes from a large class of Feynman diagrams. In particular, we compute the conformal block expansio…
We consider the free field approach or bosonization technique for the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model with arbitrary Kac-Moody algebra on Riemann surface of genus zero. This subject was much studied previously, and the paper can be partially taken as a brief survey. The way to obtain well-known Schechtman-Varchenko solutions of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations as certain correlators in free chiral theory is revisited. This gives rise to simple description of space of the WZNW conformal blocks. The general $N$-point correlators of the model are constructed from the conformal blocks using n…
For SCFTs with an $SU(2)$ R-symmetry, we determine the superconformal blocks that contribute to the four-point correlation function of a priori distinct half-BPS superconformal primaries as an expansion in terms of the relevant bosonic conformal blocks. This is achieved by using the superconformal Casimir equation and the superconformal Ward identity to fix the coefficients of the bosonic blocks uniquely in a dimension-independent way. In addition we find that many of the resulting coefficients are related through a web of linear transformations of the conformal data.
It will be shown analytically that the light sector of the identity block of a mixed heavy-light correlator in the large central charge limit is given by a correlation function of light operators on an effective background geometry. This geometry is generated by the presence of the heavy operators. It is shown that this background geometry is a solution to the Liouville equation of motion sourced by corresponding heavy vertex operators and subsequently that the light sector of the identity block matches the Liouville correlation function in the semi-classical limit. This method effectively cap…
We compute conformal correlation functions with spinor, tensor, and spinor-tensor primary fields in general dimensions with Euclidean and Lorentzian metrics. The spinors are taken to be Dirac spinors, which exist for any dimensions. For this, the embedding space formalism is employed and the polarisation spinors are introduced to simplify the computations. Three-point functions are rewritten in terms of differential operators acting on scalar-scalar-tensor correlation functions. This enables us to determine conformal blocks for four-point functions with scalar and spinor fields by acting the d…
We derive a nonperturbative, convergent operator product expansion (OPE) for null-integrated operators on the same null plane in a CFT. The objects appearing in the expansion are light-ray operators, whose matrix elements can be computed by the generalized Lorentzian inversion formula. For example, a product of average null energy (ANEC) operators has an expansion in the light-ray operators that appear in the stress-tensor OPE. An important application is to collider event shapes. The light-ray OPE gives a nonperturbative expansion for event shapes in special functions that we call celestial b…
We study a particular type of logarithmic extension of SL(2,R) Wess-Zumino-Witten models. It is based on the introduction of affine Jordan cells constructed as multiplets of quasi-primary fields organized in indecomposable representations of the Lie algebra sl(2). We solve the simultaneously imposed set of conformal and SL(2,R) Ward identities for two- and three-point chiral blocks. These correlators will in general involve logarithmic terms and may be represented compactly by considering spins with nilpotent parts. The chiral blocks are found to exhibit hierarchical structures revealed by com…
We derive explicit expressions for the conformal blocks of the Ising conformal field theory, for the correlators of an arbitrary number of primary fields. These results are obtained from the bosonized description of the Ising model. Interestingly, correlators involving Majorana fermions, can be obtained in two different ways, giving rise to identities between the `bosonic' and `fermionic' description of these correlators. These identities are generalizations of the famous Cauchy-identity. The conformal blocks of the Ising model are used to derive expression for the conformal blocks of the su(2…
In two spacetime dimensions the Virasoro heavy-heavy-light-light (HHLL) vacuum block in a certain limit is governed by the Catalan numbers. The equation for their generating function can be generalized to a differential equation which the logarithm of the block satisfies. We show that a similar story holds for the HHLL ${\cal W}_N$ vacuum blocks, where a suitable generalization of the Catalan numbers plays the main role. Moreover, the ${\cal W}_N$ blocks have the same form as the stress tensor sector of HHLL near lightcone conformal correlators in $2(N-1)$ spacetime dimensions. In the latter c…
We show how conformal partial waves (or conformal blocks) of spinor/tensor correlators can be related to each other by means of differential operators in four dimensional conformal field theories. We explicitly construct such differential operators for all possible conformal partial waves associated to four-point functions of arbitrary traceless symmetric operators. Our method allows any conformal partial wave to be extracted from a few "seed" correlators, simplifying dramatically the computation needed to bootstrap tensor correlators.
3d N=2 partition functions on the squashed three-sphere and on the twisted product S2xS1 have been shown to factorize into sums of squares of solid tori partition functions, the so-called holomorphic blocks. The same set of holomorphic blocks realizes squashed three-sphere and S2xS1 partition functions but the two cases involve different inner products, the S-pairing and the id-pairing respectively. We define a class of q-deformed CFT correlators where conformal blocks are controlled by a deformation of Virasoro symmetry and are paired by S-pairing and id-pairing respectively. Applying the boo…
