Quantitative theoretical techniques for understanding the substructure of jets at the LHC enable new insights into the dynamics of QCD, and novel approaches to search for new physics. Recently, there has been a program to reformulate jet substructure in terms of correlation functions, $\langle \mathcal{E}(\vec n_1) \mathcal{E}(\vec n_2) \cdots \mathcal{E}(\vec n_k) \rangle$, of light-ray operators, $\mathcal{E}(\vec n)$, allowing the application of techniques developed in the study of Conformal Field Theories (CFTs). In this paper we further develop these techniques in the particular context of the three-point correlator $\langle \mathcal{E}(\vec n_1) \mathcal{E}(\vec n_2) \mathcal{E}(\vec n_3) \rangle$, using recently computed perturbative data in both QCD and $\mathcal{N}=4$ sYM. We derive the celestial blocks appearing in the light-ray operator product expansion (OPE) of the three-point correlator, and use the Lorentzian inversion formula to extract the spectrum of light-ray operators appearing in the expansion, showing, in particular, that the OPE data is analytic in transverse spin. Throughout our presentation, we highlight the relation between the OPE approach, and more standard splitting function based approaches of perturbative QCD, emphasizing the utility of the OPE approach for incorporating symmetries in jet substructure calculations. We hope that our presentation introduces a number of new techniques to the jet substructure community, and also illustrates the phenomenological relevance of the study of light-ray operators in the OPE limit to the CFT community.
We study the three-point energy correlator (EEEC), defined as a matrix element of a product of three energy detectors at different locations on the celestial sphere. Lorentz symmetry implies that the EEEC can be decomposed into special functions called celestial blocks. We compute three-point celestial blocks in an expansion around the collinear limit, where the three detectors approach each other on the celestial sphere. The leading term is a traditional $d{-}2$-dimensional four-point conformal block, and thus the collinear EEEC behaves like a conformally-invariant four-point function in $d{-…
We consider the infrared factorisation of non-abelian multi-particle scattering amplitudes, and we study the form of the universal colour operator responsible for infrared divergences, when expressed in terms of coordinates on the `celestial sphere' intersecting the future light-cone at asymptotic distances. We find that colour-dipole contributions to the infrared operator, to all orders in perturbation theory, have a remarkably simple expression in these coordinates, with scale and coupling dependence factorised from kinematics and colour. Generalising earlier suggestions in the abelian theor…
Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton correlators describing the partonic structure of hadrons contain gauge links, required by color gauge invariance. The required gauge links enter in the matrix elements that contain the parton fields and depend on the color flow in the hard process. The correlators are expanded in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions, referred to as TMD PDFs, or in short TMDs. In this paper, we introduce gluon TMDs of definite rank, by making an expansion of the TMD gluon correlator with the help of irreducible tensors built from the tra…
We derive exact relations among the polarized gluon and three-gluon distributions in the transversely polarized nucleon which are relevant to single and double spin asymmetries in various hard processes. We also discuss the partonic decomposition of the transverse nucleon spin and point out a potential problem with frame-independence.
The color gauge-invariant transverse momentum dependent (TMD) quark correlators contain process dependent gauge links in the bilocal matrix elements. In this paper, we split these process dependent correlators into universal TMD correlators, which in turn can be parametrized in universal TMD distribution functions. The process dependence is contained in gluonic pole factors, of which the value is determined by the gauge link. The operator structures of the universal TMD correlators are identified using transverse moments. In this paper, specific results for double transverse weighting of quark…
We investigate the gluon transverse momentum dependent correlators as Fourier transform of matrix elements of nonlocal operator combinations. At the operator level these correlators include both field strength operators and gauge links bridging the nonlocality. In contrast to the collinear PDFs, the gauge links are no longer unique for transverse momentum dependent PDFs (TMDs) and also Wilson loops lead to nontrivial effects. We look at gluon TMDs for unpolarized, vector and tensor polarized targets. In particular a single Wilson loop operators become important when one considers the small-x l…
In this paper we discuss the incorporation of gauge links in hadronic matrix elements that describe the soft hadronic physics in high energy scattering processes. In this description the matrix elements appear in soft correlators and they contain non-local combinations of quark and gluon fields. In our description we go beyond the collinear approach in which case also the dependence on transverse momenta of partons is taken into consideration. The non-locality in the transverse direction leads to a complex gauge link structure for the full process, in which color is entangled, even at tree-lev…
Recent advances in string theory have highlighted the need for reliable numerical methods to calculate correlators at strong coupling in supersymmetric theories. We present a calculation of the correlator <0|T^{++}(r)T^{++}(0)|0> in N=1 SYM theory in 2+1 dimensions. The numerical method we use is supersymmetric discrete light-cone quantization (SDLCQ), which preserves the supersymmetry at every order of the approximation and treats fermions and bosons on the same footing. This calculation is done at large $N_c$. For small and intermediate r the correlator converges rapidly for all couplings. A…

We present an operator based factorization formula for the transverse energy-energy correlator (TEEC) hadron collider event shape in the back-to-back (dijet) limit. This factorization formula exhibits a remarkably symmetric form, being a projection onto a scattering plane of a more standard transverse momentum dependent factorization. Soft radiation is incorporated through a dijet soft function, which can be elegantly obtained to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) due to the symmetries of the problem. We present numerical results for the TEEC resummed to next-to-next-to-leading logarithm (NN…
We derive a nonperturbative, convergent operator product expansion (OPE) for null-integrated operators on the same null plane in a CFT. The objects appearing in the expansion are light-ray operators, whose matrix elements can be computed by the generalized Lorentzian inversion formula. For example, a product of average null energy (ANEC) operators has an expansion in the light-ray operators that appear in the stress-tensor OPE. An important application is to collider event shapes. The light-ray OPE gives a nonperturbative expansion for event shapes in special functions that we call celestial b…
We study the Sivers asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering: the three-gluon correlation function contribution. At the cross section level, we establish the matching between the twist-3 collinear factorization approach and the transverse momentum dependent factorization formalism at the moderate transverse momentum region. The so-called coefficient functions when one expands the quark Sivers function in terms of three-gluon correlation functions are derived, which are essential components in the usual transverse momentum dependent evolution formalism. Finally we calculate the tra…
We discuss the use of time reversal symmetry in the classification of parton correlators. Specifically, we consider the role of (small) intrinsic transverse momenta in these correlators and the determination of the proper color gauge link. The transverse momentum weighted correlators in hard processes can be expressed as a product of universal gluonic pole matrix elements and gluonic pole cross sections.
We study the Sivers asymmetry in semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering. We concentrate on the contribution from the photon-gluon fusion channel at ${\cal O}(α_{em}^2 α_s)$, where three-gluon correlation functions play a major role within the twist-3 collinear factorization formalism. We establish the correspondence between such a formalism with three gluon correlation functions and the usual transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism at moderate hadron transverse momenta. We derive the coefficient functions used in the usual TMD evolution formalism rela…
We develop two approaches to the problem of soft fragmentation of hadrons in a gauge theory for high energy processes. The first approach directly adapts the standard resummation of the parton distribution function's anomalous dimension (that of twist-two local operators) in the forward scattering regime, using $k_T$-factorization and BFKL theory, to the case of the fragmentation function by exploiting the mapping between the dynamics of eikonal lines on transverse-plane to the celestial-sphere. Critically, to correctly resum the anomalous dimension of the fragmentation function under this map…
We show that Jet Energy Correlation variables can be used effectively to discover and distinguish a wide variety of boosted light dijet resonances at the LHC through sensitivity to their transverse momentum and color structures.

We analyze the structure of generalized off-diagonal and transverse-momentum dependent quark-quark and gluon-gluon correlators for a spin-1/2 hadron. Using the light-front formalism, we provide a parametrization in terms of the parton generalized transverse-momentum dependent distributions that emphasizes the multipole structure of the correlator. The results for the quark-quark correlation functions are consistent with an alternative parametrization given in terms of Lorentz covariant structures. The parametrization for the gluon-gluon generalized correlator is presented for the first time an…
Single-spin asymmetries were long thought to vanish in high-energy scattering processes because of their specific time-reversal behavior. Time-reversal-odd phenomena, however, appear naturally when one includes effects of intrinsic transverse momenta of partons. The partons, quarks and gluons, enter the description of high-energy scattering processes in correlators which contain quark and gluon fields. The correlators, parameterized in terms of distribution and fragmentation functions, constitute matrix elements of non-local field configurations. For transverse momentum dependent (TMD) correla…
Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs), in short referred to as TMDs, also take into account the transverse momentum (pT) of the partons. Just as the pT-integrated analogues we want to link them to quark and gluon matrix elements using Operator Product Expansion methods in QCD, involving operators of definite twist. The TMDs also involve operators of higher twist, which are not suppressed by powers of the hard scale, however. Using the expression for TMDs involving nonlocal matrix elements of quark and gluon fields there is a gauge link dependence, which also …

We present results for the thermal photon emissivity of the quark-gluon plasma derived from spatially transverse vector correlators computed in lattice QCD at a temperature of 250 MeV. The analysis of the spectral functions, performed at fixed spatial momentum, is based on continuum-extrapolated correlators obtained with two flavours of dynamical Wilson fermions. We compare the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD correlators, as well as the ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills correlators at infinite coupling, to the correlators from lattice QCD and find them to lie within $\sim10\%$ of e…
Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution correlators can be parametrized in terms of TMD parton distribution functions (PDFs), or TMDs for short. We provide an overview of the leading-twist quark and gluon TMDs, both in momentum space and in coordinate space (also called $b_T$-space, where $b_T$ is Fourier conjugate to the partonic momentum $k_T$). We consider unpolarized, vector polarized, as well as tensor polarized hadrons, which is relevant for spin-$0$, spin-$1/2$, and spin-$1$ hadrons.
We re-estimate the tensor susceptibility of QCD vacuum, $χ$, and to this end, we re-estimate the leptonic decay constants for transversely polarized $ρ$- ,~$ρ'$- and b_1-mesons. The origin of the susceptibility is analyzed using duality between $ρ$- and b_1- channels in a 2-point correlator of tensor currents. We confirm the results in Nucl.Phys. B283(1987)706 for the 2-point correlator of tensor currents and disagree with Phys.Lett. B395(1997)307 on both OPE expansion and the value of QCD vacuum tensor susceptibility. Using our value for the latter we determine new estimations of nucleon tens…
The general parameterization of the quark-quark correlation function for a spin-1/2 hadron is considered. The presence of the Wilson line ensuring color gauge invariance of the correlator induces structures that were not given explicitly in the existing literature. In particular, the general form of the transverse momentum dependent correlator entering various hard scattering processes is derived. In this case two new time-reversal odd parton distributions appear at the twist-3 level.

Energy correlators are field-theoretically clean and phenomenologically valuable probes of QCD dynamics. We explore the possibility of using the information encoded in the energy correlators of a hadronically decaying electroweak vector boson in order to extract its full decay density matrix. The kinematics of the one- and two-point energy correlators can indeed discriminate between longitudinal and transverse modes and reveal the interference pattern between different vector polarizations. Such observables improve the sensitivity to microscopic new physics affecting the production rate of the…
We discuss the treatment of intrinsic transverse momenta in high energy scattering processes. Within the field theoretical framework of QCD the process is described in terms of correlators containing quark and gluon fields. The correlators, parameterized in terms of distribution and fragmentation functions, contain matrix elements of nonlocal field configurations requiring a careful treatment to assure color gauge invariance. It leads to nontrivial gauge links connecting the parton fields. For the transverse momentum dependent correlators the gauge links give rise to time reversal odd phenomen…
We present the systematic results for three dimensional fragmentation functions defined via the quark-quark correlator for hadrons with spin 0, 1/2 and 1 respectively. These results are presented in terms of a spin independent part, a vector polarization dependent part and a tensor polarization dependent part. For spin 0 hadrons, only the spin independent part is needed, for spin 1/2 hadron, the polarization independent and vector polarization dependent parts are present, while for spin 1 hadrons, all the three parts exist. We discuss the general properties of these fragmentation functions and…

We calculate the q q correlation function associated to transverse target lepton-nucleon inclusive deep-inelastic scattering by direct evaluation of the corresponding matrix element. We use the electromagnetic impact parameter potential for a transversely polarized nucleon to define the q q correlation function for each avor in terms of the field components of that avor. The results are compared with the two existing models for the q q correlator. Using the calculated q q correlation function, we estimated the transverse target SSA in IDIS process.

We introduce the spin-operator representation for the gluon as well as quark distribution functions as nucleon matrix element of the gauge-invariant bilocal light-cone operators in QCD. To identify the relevant spin operators for quarks and gluons in a unified manner, we rely on the transformation properties of the quark and gluon fields in the coordinate space under the action of the generator of the Lorentz group. In particular, this approach allows us to define the transverse-spin gluon distribution function $G_T(x)$, which is the genuine counterpart of the transverse-spin quark distributio…

Two-particle number and transverse momentum differential correlation functions are powerful tools for unveiling the detailed dynamics and particle production mechanisms involved in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Measurements of transverse momentum correlators $P_2$ and $G_2$, in particular, provide added information not readily accessible with better known number correlation functions $R_2$. However, it is found that the $R_2$ and $G_2$ correlators are somewhat sensitive to the details of the experimental procedure used to measure them. They exhibit, in particular, a dependence on the coll…
We present first results from our analysis of the most general quark-quark correlator of the nucleon, which can be parameterized in terms of so-called generalized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. These results include the first complete parameterization of the nucleon GPDs and TMDs to all twists as well as new results on possible nontrivial relations between them.
