Given a pair of distinct non-CM normalized eigenforms having integer Fourier coefficients $a_1 (n)$ and $a_2(n)$, we count positive integers $n$ with $(a_1(n), a_2(n))=1$ and make a conjecture about the density of the set of primes $p$ for which $(a_1(p), a_2(p))=1$. We also study the average order of the number of prime divisors of $(a_1(p), a_2(p))$.
We prove that, for fixed tame level (N,p) = 1, there are only finitely many Hecke eigenforms f of level Gamma_1(N) and even weight with a_p(f) = 0 which are not CM.
We prove multiplicative relations between certain Fourier coefficients of degree 2 Siegel eigenforms. These relations are analogous to those for elliptic eigenforms. We also provide two sets of formulas for the eigenvalues of degree 2 Siegel eigenforms. The first evaluates the eigenvalues in terms of the form's Fourier coefficients, in the case $a(I) \neq 0$. The second expresses the eigenvalues of index $p$ and $p^2$, for $p$ prime, solely in terms of $p$ and $k$, the weight of the form, in the case $a(0)\neq 0$. From this latter case, we give simple expressions for the eigenvalues associated…
Let f be a modular form with complex multiplication. If f has critical slope, then Coleman's classicality theorem implies that there is a p-adic overconvergent generalized Hecke eigenform with the same Hecke eigenvalues as f. We give a formula for the Fourier coefficiets of this generalized Hecke eigenform. We also investigate the dimension of the generalized Hecke eigenspace of p-adic overconvergent forms containing f.
Suppose $E$ is an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ of conductor $N$ with complex multiplication (CM) by $\mathbb{Q}(i)$, and $f_E$ is the corresponding cuspidal Hecke eigenform in $S^{\mathrm{new}}_2(Γ_0(N))$. Then $n$-th Fourier coefficient of $f_E$ is non-zero in the short interval $(X, X + cX^{\frac{1}{4}})$ for all $X \gg 0$ and for some $c > 0$. As a consequence, we produce infinitely many cuspidal CM eigenforms $f$ level $N>1$ and weight $k > 2$ for which $i_f(n) \ll n^{\frac{1}{4}}$ holds, for all $n \gg 0$.
Let $f\in S_k(Γ_{0}(N))$ be a normalized Hecke eigenform of even integral weight $k$ and level $N$. Let $j\ge1$ be a positive integer. We prove that for almost all primes $p$, $p\nmid N$, and for all characters $χ_{0}=\pm 1\pmod N$, the sequence $\left(χ_{0}(p^{nj})a(p^{nj})\right)_{n\in\N}$ has infinitely many sign changes. We also obtain a similar result for the sequence $\left(a(p^{j(1+2n)})\right)_{n\in\N}$ when $j$ is odd.
In this article, we give evidence that computing Fourier coefficients of the Hecke eigenforms for composite indices is no easier than factoring integers. In particular, we show that the existence of a polynomial time algorithm that, given n, computes the n-th Fourier coefficient of a (fixed) Hecke eigenform implies that we can factor most RSA moduli (numbers that are products of two distinct primes) in polynomial time.
We show that signs of Fourier coefficients, on certain sub-families, determine the half-integral weight cuspidal eigenform uniquely, up to a positive constant. We also study sign change results for the product of the Fourier coefficients of two distinct half-integral weight eigenforms.
Lehmer's 1947 conjecture on whether $τ(n)$ vanishes is still unresolved. In this context, it is natural to consider variants of Lehmer's conjecture. We determine many integers that cannot be values of $τ(n)$. For example, among the odd numbers $α$ such that $|α|<99$, we determine that $$τ(n) \notin \{-9, \pm 15, \pm 21, -25, -27, -33, \pm 35, \pm 45, \pm 49, -55, \pm 63, \pm 77, -81, \pm 91 \}.$$ Moreover, under GRH, we have that $τ(n) \neq -|α|$ and that $τ(n) \notin \{9,25,27,39,$ $75,81\}.$ We also consider the level 1 Hecke eigenforms in dimension 1 spaces of cusp forms. For example, for $…
In this article, we establish an average behaviour of the normalised Fourier coefficients of the Hecke eigenforms supported at the integers represented by any primitive integral positive definite binary quadratic form of fixed discriminant $D < 0$ when the class number $h(D) = 1$. We also obtain a quantitative result for the number of sign changes of the sequence of the normalised Fourier coefficients $λ_{f}(n)$ of the Hecke eigenforms $f$ where $n$ is represented by any primitive integral positive definite binary quadratic form of fixed discriminant $D < 0$ when the class number $h(D) = 1$ in…
Let $f$ be a normalized Hecke eigenform with rational integer Fourier coefficients. It is an interesting question to know how often an integer $n$ has a factor common with the $n$-th Fourier coefficient of $f$. The second author \cite{kumar3} showed that this happens very often. In this paper, we give an asymptotic formula for the number of integers $n$ for which $(n, a(n))=1$, where $a(n)$ is the $n$-th Fourier coefficient of a normalized Hecke eigenform $f$ of weight $2$ with rational integer Fourier coefficients and has complex multiplication.
We show that if a modular cuspidal eigenform $f$ of weight $2k$ is $2$-adically close to an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$, which has a cyclic rational $4$-isogeny, then $n$-th Fourier coefficient of $f$ is non-zero in the short interval $(X, X + cX^{\frac{1}{4}})$ for all $X \gg 0$ and for some $c > 0$. We use this fact to produce non-CM cuspidal eigenforms $f$ of level $N>1$ and weight $k > 2$ such that $i_f(n) \ll n^{\frac{1}{4}}$ for all $n \gg 0$.
Consider the Fourier expansions of two elements of a given space of modular forms. How many leading coefficients must agree in order to guarantee that the two expansions are the same? Sturm gave an upper bound for modular forms of a given weight and level. This was adapted by Ram Murty, Kohnen and Ghitza to the case of two eigenforms of the same level but having potentially different weights. We consider their expansions modulo a prime ideal, presenting a new bound. In the process of analysing this bound, we generalise a result of Bach and Sorenson, who provide a practical upper bound for the …
In this paper, we investigate the sign changes of Fourier coefficients of half-integral weight Hecke eigenforms and give two quantitative results on the number of sign changes.
We define canonical real analytic versions of modular forms of integral weight for the full modular group, generalising real analytic Eisenstein series. They are harmonic Maass waveforms with poles at the cusp, whose Fourier coefficients involve periods and quasi-periods of cusp forms, which are conjecturally transcendental. In particular, we settle the question of finding explicit `weak harmonic lifts' for every eigenform of integral weight $k$ and level one. We show that mock modular forms of integral weight are algebro-geometric and have Fourier coefficients proportional to $n^{1-k}(a'_n + …
We establish lower bounds for (i) the numbers of positive and negative terms and (ii) the number of sign changes in the sequence of Fourier coefficients at squarefree integers of a half-integral weight modular Hecke eigenform.
In this paper, we discuss questions related to the oscillatory behavior and the equidistribution of signs for certain subfamilies of Fourier coefficients of integral weight newforms with a non-trivial nebentypus as well as Fourier coefficients of eigenforms of half-integral weight reachable by the Shimura correspondence.
We extend some recent work of D. McCarthy, proving relations among some Fourier coefficients of a degree 2 Siegel modular form $F$ with arbitrary level and character, provided there are some primes $q$ so that $F$ is an eigenform for the Hecke operators $T(q)$ and $T_1(q^2)$.
Let $d(n)$ denote the number of divisors of $n$. In this paper, we study the average value of $d(a(p))$, where $p$ is a prime and $a(p)$ is the $p$-th Fourier coefficient of a normalized Hecke eigenform of weight $k \ge 2$ for $Γ_0(N)$ having rational integer Fourier coefficients.
We show that the Dirichlet series associated to the Fourier coefficients of a half-integral weight Hecke eigenform at squarefree integers extends analytically to a holomorphic function in the half-plane $\re s\textgreater{}\tfrac{1}{2}$. This exhibits a high fluctuation of the coefficients at squarefree integers.
This article is concerned with the Fourier coefficients of cusp forms (not necessarily eigenforms) of half-integer weight lying in the plus space. We give a soft proof that there are infinitely many fundamental discriminants $D$ such that the Fourier coefficients evaluated at $|D|$ are non-zero. By adapting the resonance method, we also demonstrate that such Fourier coefficients must take quite large values.
We study the simultaneous sign change of Fourier coefficients of a pair of distinct normalized newforms of integral weight supported on primes power indices, we also prove some equidistribution results. Finally, we consider an analogous question for Fourier coefficients of a pair of half-integral weight Hecke eigenforms.
In this article, we study the simultaneous sign changes of the Fourier coefficients of two Hilbert cusp forms of different integral weights. We also study the simultaneous non-vanishing of Fourier coefficients, of two distinct non-zero primitive Hilbert cuspidal non-CM eigenforms of integral weights, at powers of a fixed prime ideal.
We prove a non-vanishing result of modular L-values with quadratic twists, where the quadratic discriminants are in a short interval. Using this fact and Waldspurger's theorem, we improve the results of Balog-Ono[The chebotarev density theorem in short intervals and some questions of Serre, Journal of number theory. 91(2):356-371(2001)] on the non-vanishing of Fourier coefficients of half-integral weight eigenform.
Let $f$ be a newform of weight $2$ on $Γ_0(N)$ with Fourier $q$-expansion $f(q)=q+\sum_{n\geq 2} a_n q^n$, where $Γ_0(N)$ denotes the group of invertible matrices with integer coefficients, upper triangular mod $N$. Let $p$ be a prime dividing $N$ once, $p\parallel N$, a Steinberg prime. Then, it is well known that $a_p\in\{1,-1\}$. We denote by $K_f$ the field of coefficients of $f$. Let $λ$ be a finite place in $K_f$ not dividing $2p$ and assume that the mod $λ$ Galois representation attached to $f$ is irreducible. In this paper we will give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existe…
For a half integral weight modular form $f$ we study the signs of the Fourier coefficients $a(n)$. If $f$ is a Hecke eigenform of level $ N$ with real Nebentypus character, and $t$ is a fixed square-free positive integer with $a(t)\neq 0$, we show that for all but finitely many primes $p$ the sequence $(a(tp^{2m}))_{m}$ has infinitely many signs changes. Moreover, we prove similar (partly conditional) results for arbitrary cusp forms $f$ which are not necessarily Hecke eigenforms.
Let $f$ be a half-integral weight cusp form of level $4N$ for odd and squarefree $N$ and let $a(n)$ denote its $n^{\rm th}$ normalized Fourier coefficient. Assuming that all the coefficients $a(n)$ are real, we study the sign of $a(n)$ when $n$ runs through an arithmetic progression. As a consequence, we establish a lower bound for the number of integers $n\le x$ such that $a(n)>n^{-α}$ where $x$ and $α$ are positive and $f$ is not necessarily a Hecke eigenform.
Let $k$ and $n$ be positive even integers. For a Hecke eigenform $h$ in the Kohnen plus subspace of weight $k-n/2+1/2$ for $\varGamma_0(4)$, let $I_n(h)$ be the Duke-Imamoglu-Ikeda lift of $h$ to the space of cusp forms of weight $k$ for $Sp_n(\mathbb Z)$. We then give an estimate of the Fourier coefficients of $I_n(h)$. It is better than the usual Hecke bound for the Fourier coefficients of a Siegel cusp form.
We prove that a Siegel cusp form of degree 2 for the full modular group is determined by its set of Fourier coefficients a(S) with 4 det(S) ranging over odd squarefree integers. As a key step to our result, we also prove that a classical cusp form of half-integral weight and level 4N, with N odd and squarefree, is determined by its set of Fourier coefficients a(d) with d ranging over odd squarefree integers, a result that was previously known only for Hecke eigenforms.
Let $f\in S_{k+1/2}(N,χ)$ be a Hecke eigenform of half integral weight $k+1/2\,(k\geq 2)$ and the real nebentypus $χ=\pm 1$ where the Fourier coefficients $a(n)$ are reals. We prove that the sequence $\{χ(p^ν)a(tp^{2ν})\}_{ν\in\N}$ has infinitely many sign changes for almost all primes $p$ where $t$ is a squarefree integer such that $a(t)\neq 0$. The same result holds for the sequences of Fourier coefficients $\{a(tp^{2(2ν+1)})\}_{ν\in\N}$ and $\{a(tp^{4ν})\}_{ν\in\N}$.
Let f be a cusp form of weight k+1/2 and at most quadratic nebentype character whose Fourier coefficients a(n) are all real. We study an equidistribution conjecture of Bruinier and Kohnen for the signs of a(n). We prove this conjecture for certain subfamilies of coefficients that are accessible via the Shimura lift by using the Sato-Tate equidistribution theorem for integral weight modular forms. Firstly, an unconditional proof is given for the family {a(tp^2)}_p where t is a squarefree number and p runs through the primes. In this case, the result is in terms of natural density. To prove it f…
For each prime $p$, we determine the distribution of the $p^{th}$ Fourier coefficients of the Hecke eigenforms of large weight for the full modular group. As $p\to\infty$, this distribution tends to the Sato--Tate distribution.
Given two Siegel eigenforms of different weights, we determine explicit sets of Hecke eigenvalues for the two forms that must be distinct. In degree two, and under some additional conditions, we determine explicit sets of Fourier coefficients of the two forms that must be distinct.
Let $f=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}a(n)q^{n}\in S_{k+1/2}(N,χ_{0})$ be a non-zero cuspidal Hecke eigenform of weight $k+\frac{1}{2}$ and the trivial nebentypus $χ_{0}$ where the Fourier coefficients $a(n)$ are real. Bruinier and Kohnen conjectured that the signs of $a(n)$ are equidistributed. This conjecture was proved to be true by Inam, Wiese and Arias-de-Reyna for the subfamilies $\{a(t n^{2})\}_{n}$ where $t$ is a squarefree integer such that $a(t)\neq 0$. Let $q$ and $d$ be natural numbers such that $(d,q)=1$. In this work, we show that $\{a(t n^{2})\}_{n}$ is equidistributed over any arithmetic p…
We prove that if $F$ is a non-zero (possibly non-cuspidal) vector-valued Siegel modular form of any degree, then it has infinitely many non-zero Fourier coefficients which are indexed by half-integral matrices having odd, square-free (and thus fundamental) discriminant. The proof uses an induction argument in the setting of vector-valued modular forms. In an Appendix, as an application of a variant of our result and building upon the work of A. Pollack, we show how to obtain an unconditional proof of the functional equation of the spinor $L$-function of a holomorphic cuspidal Siegel eigenform …
From a result of Waldspurger, it is known that the normalized Fourier coefficients $a(m)$ of a half-integral weight holomorphic cusp eigenform $\f$ are, up to a finite set of factors, one of $\pm \sqrt{L(1/2, f, χ_m)}$ when $m$ is square-free and $f$ is the integral weight cusp form related to $\f$ by the Shimura correspondence. In this paper we address a question posed by Kohnen: which square root is $a(m)$? In particular, if we look at the set of $a(m)$ with $m$ square-free, do these Fourier coefficients change sign infinitely often? By partially analytically continuing a related Dirichlet s…
In this article we deal with the problem of counting the number of pairs of normalized eigenforms $ (f,g) $ of weight $k$ and level $N$ such that $ a_p (f) = a_p (g) $ where $a_p (f) $ denotes the $p-$th Fourier coefficient of $f$. Here $p$ is a fixed prime.
Let $f(z)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}a(n) e^{2πi nz}$ be a normalized Hecke eigenform in $S_{2k}^{\text{new}}(Γ_0(N))$ with integer Fourier coefficients. We prove that there exists a constant $C(f)>0$ such that any integer is a sum of at most $C(f)$ coefficients $a(n) $. It holds $C(f)\ll_{\varepsilon,k}N^{\frac{6k-3}{16}+\varepsilon}$.
We investigate some key analytic properties of Fourier coefficients and Hecke eigenvalues attached to scalar-valued Siegel cusp forms $F$ of degree 2, weight $k$ and level $N$. First, assuming that $F$ is a Hecke eigenform that is not of Saito-Kurokawa type, we prove an improved bound in the $k$-aspect for the smallest prime at which its Hecke eigenvalue is negative. Secondly, we show that there are infinitely many sign changes among the Hecke eigenvalues of $F$ at primes lying in an arithmetic progression. Third, we show that there are infinitely many positive as well as infinitely many negat…
This paper studies the Fourier expansion of Hecke-Maass eigenforms for $GL(2, \mathbb Q)$ of arbitrary weight, level, and character at various cusps. Translating well known results in the theory of adelic automorphic representations into classical language, a multiplicative expression for the Fourier coefficients at any cusp is derived. In general, this expression involves Fourier coefficients at several different cusps. A sufficient condition for the existence of multiplicative relations among Fourier coefficients at a single cusp is given. It is shown that if the level is 4 times (or in some…
This work represents a systematic computational study of the distribution of the Fourier coefficients of cuspidal Hecke eigenforms of level $Γ_0(4)$ and half-integral weights. Based on substantial calculations, the question is raised whether the distribution of normalised Fourier coefficients with bounded indices can be approximated by a generalised Gaussian distribution. Moreover, it is argued that the apparent symmetry around zero of the data lends strong evidence to the Bruinier-Kohnen Conjecture on the equidistribution of signs and even suggests the strengthening that signs and absolute va…
Let $S_2^*(q)$ be the set of primitive Hecke eigenforms of weight 2 and prime level $q$. For $p$ prime and $t\in \mathbb{R}$, we prove asymptotic formulas for the sums $$ \mathcal {A}(p^j,q,t)=\sum_{f\in S_2^*(q)} L\left(\frac{1}{2}+it,f\right)^2λ_f(p^j),\qquad j=1,2, $$ where $λ_f(p^j)$ is the $p^j$-th normalized Fourier coefficient of $f$ and $L(s,f)$ is the $L$-function associated to $f$.
Suppose $j_N(τ)$ and $j_N^{*}(τ)$ are the Hauptmoduln of the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$ and the Fricke group $Γ^{*}_0(N)$, respectively. In [7], the authors predicted that, like Klein's $j$-function, the Fourier coefficients of $j_N(τ)$ and $j_{N}^{*}(τ)$ in some arithmetic progression are both even and odd with density $\frac{1}{2}$. In this article, we can find some arithmetic progression of $n$ where the Fourier coefficients of $j_6(τ)$ (resp. $j_6^{*}(τ)$ and $j_{10}(τ)$) are almost always even. Furthermore, using Hecke eigenforms and Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, we obtain infini…
For each prime $\ell$, let $|\cdot|_\ell$ be an extension to $\bar \Q$ of the usual $\ell$-adic absolute value on $\Q$. Suppose $g(z) = \sum_{n=0}^\infty c(n)q^n \in M_{k+\half}(N)$ is an eigenform whose Fourier coefficients are algebraic integers. Under a mild condition, for all but finitely many primes $\ell$ there are infinitely many square-free integers $m$ for which $|c(m)|_\ell = 1$. Consequently we obtain indivisibility results for ``algebraic parts'' of central critical values of modular $L$-functions and class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields. These results partially answer a con…

Let $f$ and $g$ be two distinct newforms which are normalized Hecke eigenforms of weights $k_1, k_2 \ge 2$ and levels $N_1, N_2 \ge 1$ respectively. Also let $a_f(n)$ and $a_g(n)$ be the $n$-th Fourier-coefficients of $f$ and $g$ respectively. In this article, we investigate the first sign change of the sequence $\{a_f(p^α)a_g(p^α) \}_{p^α \in \N, α\le 2}$, where $p$ is a prime number. We further study the non-vanishing of the sequence $\{a_f(n)a_g(n) \}_{n \in \N}$ and derive bounds for first non-vanishing term in this sequence. We also show, using ideas of Kowalski-Robert-Wu and Murty-Murty,…
