Patterson discussed the curvature identities on Riemannian manifolds in [14], and a curvature identity for any 6-dimensional Riemannian manifold was independently derived from the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet Theorem [8]. In this paper, we provide the explicit formulae of Patterson's curvature identity that holds on 5-dimensional and 6-dimensional Einstein manifolds. We confirm that the curvature identities on the Einstein manifold from the previous work [8] are the same as the curvature identities deduced from Patterson's result. We also provide examples that support the theorems.
We study curvature identities on contact metric manifolds on the geometry of the corresponding almost Käehler cones, and we provide applications of the derived curvature identities.
We relate certain universal curvature identities for Kaehler manifolds to the Euler-Lagrange equations of the scalar invariants which are defined by pairing characteristic forms with powers of the Kaehler form.
In this paper, we systematically compute the Bianchi identities for the canonical connection on an almost Hermitian manifold. Moreover, we also compute the curvature tensor of the Levi-Civita connection on almost Hermitian manifolds in terms of curvature and torsion of the canonical connection. As applications of the curvature identities, we obtain some results about the integrability of quasi Kaehler manifolds and some properties of nearly Kaehler manifolds.
We examine universal curvature identities for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with boundary. We determine the Euler-Lagrange equations associated to the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula and show that they are given solely in terms of curvature {and the second fundamental form and do not involve covariant derivatives thus generalizing a conjecture of Berger to this context.
We shall prove the universality of the curvature identity for the 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold using a different method than that used by Gilkey, Park, and Sekigawa \cite{GPS}.
We give a new proof of the generalized Minkowski identities relating the higher degree mean curvatures of orientable closed hypersurfaces immersed in a given constant sectional curvature manifold. Our methods rely on a fundamental differential system of Riemannian geometry introduced by the author. We develop the notion of position vector field, which lies at the core of the Minkowski identities.
We study scalar and symmetric 2-form valued universal curvature identities. We use this to establish the Gauss-Bonnet theorem using heat equation methods, to give a new proof of a result of Kuz'mina and Labbi concerning the Euler-Lagrange equations of the Gauss-Bonnet integral, and to give a new derivation of the Euh-Park-Sekigawa identity.
The aim of this research is the study of Gray curvature identities, introduced by Alfred Gray in \cite{kn:Gra76} for the class of almost hermitian manifolds. As known till now, there is no equivalent for the class of almost contact manifolds. For this purpose we use the Boohby-Wang fibration and the warped manifolds construction in order to establish which identities could be satisfied by an almost contact manifold.
We define (higher rank) spinorially twisted spin structures and deduce various curvature identites as well as estimates for the eigenvalues of the corresponding twisted Dirac operators.
In monograph of D. E. Blair "Riemannian geometry of contact and symplectic manifolds" and in the paper of S. Zamkovoy "Canonical connections on paracontact manifolds", the curvature identities respectively for contact and paracontact metric manifold are proved. We obtain the curvature identity in the wider class of manifolds, which generalizes results presented in above mentioned publications. Moreover, we present some properties of almost (para)hermitian structure on a special semiproduct of R+ and an almost (para)contact metric manifold. This semiproduct plays an auxiliary role in proving ma…
We show that any universal curvature identity which holds in the Riemannian setting extends naturally to the pseudo-Riemannian setting. Thus the Euh-Park-Sekigawa identity also holds for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. We study the Euler-Lagrange equations associated to the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula and show that as in the Riemannian setting, they are given solely in terms of curvature (and not in terms of covariant derivatives of curvature) even in the pseudo-Riemannian setting.
In this note, we prove two Kazdan-Warner type identities involving $v^{(2k)}$, the renormalized volume coefficients of a Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g)$, and $G_{2r}$, the so-called Gauss-Bonnet curvature, and a conformal Killing vector field on $(M^n,g)$. In the case when the Riemannian manifold is locally conformally flat, $v^{(2k)}=(-2)^{-k}σ_k$, $G_{2r}(g)=\frac{4^r(n-r)!r!}{(n-2r)!}σ_r$, and our results reduce to earlier ones established by Viaclovsky and by the second author.
The curvature tensor of a pseudo-Riemannian metric, and its covariant derivatives, satisfy certain identities that hold on any manifold of dimension less or equal than $n$. In this paper, we re-elaborate recent results by Gilkey-Park-Sekigawa regarding $p$-covariant dimensional curvature identities, for $p=0,2$. To this end, we use the classical theory of natural operations, that allows us to simplify some arguments and to generalize the description of Gilkey-Park-Sekigawa. Thus, our main result describes the first space of $p$-covariant dimensional curvature identities, for any even $p$.
The aim of this paper is to describe the local Bianchi identities for an $h$-normal $Γ$-linear connection of Cartan type $\nablaΓ$ on the first-order jet space $J^1(R,M)$. In this direction, we present the local expressions of the adapted components of the torsion and curvature d-tensors produced by $\nablaΓ$ and we give the general local expressions of Bianchi identities which connect these d-torsions and d-curvatures.
The importance of Einstein's geometrization philosophy, as an alternative to the least action principle, in constructing general relativity (GR), is illuminated. The role of differential identities in this philosophy is clarified. The use of Bianchi identity to write the field equations of GR is shown. Another similar identity in the absolute parallelism geometry is given. A more general differential identity in the parameterized absolute parallelism geometry is derived. Comparison and interrelationships between the above mentioned identities and their role in constructing field theories are d…
Listing has recently extended results of Kozameh, Newman and Tod for four-dimensional spacetimes and presented a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for a metric to be locally conformally equivalent to an Einstein metric in all semi-Riemannian spaces of dimension n>3 -- subject to a non-degeneracy restriction on the Weyl tensor. By exploiting dimensionally dependent identities we demonstrate how to construct two alternative versions of these necessary and sufficient conditions which we believe will be useful in applications. The four-dimensional case is discussed in detail and examples …
An Einstein manifold is called scalar curvature rigid if there are no compactly supported volume-preserving deformation of the metric which increase the scalar curvature. We give various characterizations of scalar curvature rigidity for open Einstein manifolds as well as for closed Einstein manifolds. As an application, we construct mass-decreasing perturbations of the Riemannian Schwarzschild metric and the Taub-Bolt metric.
We study rigidity results for the Einstein metrics as the critical points of a family of known quadratic curvature functionals involving the scalar curvature, the Ricci curvature and the Riemannian curvature tensor, characterized by some pointwise inequalities involving the Weyl curvature and the traceless Ricci curvature. Moreover, we also provide a few rigidity results for locally conformally flat critical metrics.
We prove that simply connected Einstein four-manifolds of positive scalar curvature are conformally Kähler if and only if the determinant of the self-dual Weyl curvature is positive.
We provide a classification of Einstein submanifolds in space forms with flat normal bundle and parallel mean curvature. This extends a previous result due to Dajczer and Tojeiro for isometric immersions of Riemannian manifolds with constant sectional curvature.
This paper contains a classification of all 3-dimensional manifolds with constant scalar curvature $S \not= 0$ that carry a non-trivial solution of the Einstein-Dirac equation.
We give some uniform estimates for constant mean curvature solutions of the conformal vacuum Einstein constraint equations on compact manifolds. Existence of those solutions was given in a paper by J. Isenberg.
In this paper, we obtain classification of four-dimensional Einstein manifolds with positive Ricci curvature and pinched sectional curvature. In particular, the first result concerns with an upper bound of sectional curvature, improving a theorem of E. Costa. The second is a generalization of D. Yang's result assuming an upper bound on the difference between sectional curvatures.
We construct new homogeneous Einstein spaces with negative Ricci curvature in two ways: First, we give a method for classifying and constructing a class of rank one Einstein solvmanifolds whose derived algebras are two-step nilpotent. As an application, we describe an explicit continuous family of ten-dimensional Einstein manifolds with a two-dimensional parameter space, including a continuous subfamily of manifolds with negative sectional curvature. Secondly, we obtain new examples of non-symmetric Einstein solvmanifolds by modifying the algebraic structure of non-compact irreducible symmetri…
For an asymptotically Poincare-Einstein manifold with a lower Ricci curvature bound, we establish a sharp inequality relating the type II Yamabe invariant of the interior and the Yamabe invariant of its conformal infinity
Let (M,g) be a compact oriented Einstein 4-manifold. If M has positive intersection form and g has non-negative sectional curvature, we show that, up to rescaling and isometry, (M,g) is CP2, equipped with its standard Fubini-Study metric.
We prove that a simpy connected Hermitian Einstein 4-manifold with non-negative sectional curvature is isometric to complex projective space $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{2}$ with the Fubini-Study metric or isometric to the product $\mathbb{S}^{2}\times \mathbb{S}^{2}$ with the canonical metric.
Let C be a cone in the space of algebraic curvature tensors. Moreover, let (M,g) be a compact Einstein manifold with the property that the curvature tensor of (M,g) lies in the cone C at each point on M. We show that (M,g) has constant sectional curvature if the cone C satisfies certain structure conditions.
A Poincaré-Einstein metric $g$ is called non-degenerate if there are no non-zero infinitesimal Einstein deformations of $g$, in Bianchi gauge, that lie in $L^2$. We prove that a 4-dimensional Poincaré-Einstein metric is non-degenerate if it satisfies a certain chiral curvature inequality. Write $R_+$ for the part of the curvature operator of g which acts on self-dual 2-forms. We prove that if $R_+$ is negative definite then $g$ is non-degenerate. This is a chiral generalisation of a result due to Biquard and Lee, that a Poincaré-Einstein metric of negative sectional curvature is non-degenerate
In this paper, we consider some rigidity results for the Einstein metrics as the critical points of some known quadratic curvature functionals on complete manifolds, characterized by some point-wise inequalities. Moreover, we also provide rigidity results by the integral inequalities involving the Weyl curvature, the trace-less Ricci curvature and the Sobolev constant, accordingly.
In this paper, we study Riemannian functionals defined by $L^2$-norms of Ricci curvature, scalar curvature, Weyl curvature, and Riemannian curvature. We try to understand stability of their critical points that are products of Einstein metrics. In particular, we prove that the product of a spherical space form and a compact hyperbolic manifold is unstable for some quadratic functionals if the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian of the hyperbolic manifold is sufficiently small.
We establish variational formulas for Ricci upper and lower bounds, as well as a derivative formula for the Ricci curvature. As applications, constant curvature manifolds, Einstein manifolds and Ricci parallel manifolds are identified, respectively, with different integral-differential formulas and semigroup inequalities. Moreover, by using derivative and Hessian formulas for the heat semigroup $P_t$ developed from stochastic analysis, explicit Hessian estimates are derived on Einstein and Ricci parallel manifolds.
Inspired by the study of $V$-static manifold about classification, in this article, we apply the recent results obtained by Freitas and Gomes (Compact gradient Einstein-type manifolds with boundary, 2022) to prove the rigidity results for compact gradient Einstein-type manifolds with nonempty boundary and constant scalar curvature under some suitable pinching conditions. As a special case of gradient Einstein-type manifold, we also give a rigidity result of $(m,ρ)$-quasi-Einstein manifold with boundary.
In this paper, we prove some rigidity results for the Einstein metrics as the critical points of a family of known quadratic curvature functionals on closed manifolds, characterized by some point-wise inequalities. Moreover, we also provide a few rigidity results that involve the Weyl curvature, the trace-less Ricci curvature and the Yamabe invariant, accordingly.
For Einstein four-manifolds with positive scalar curvature, we derive relations among various positivity conditions on the curvature tensor, some of which are of great importance in the study of the Ricci flow. These relations suggest possible new ideas to study the well-known rigidity conjecture for positively curved Einstein four-manifolds.
In this paper we will prove that the only compact 4-manifold M with an Einstein metric of positive sectional curvature which is also hermitian with respect to some complex structure on M, is the complex projective plane CP^2, with its Fubini-Study metric.
An $(α,β)$-metric is defined by a Riemannian metric $α$ and $1$-form $β$. In this paper, we study a known class of two-dimensional $(α,β)$-metrics of vanishing S-curvature. We determine the local structure of those metrics and show that those metrics are Einsteinian (equivalently, isotropic flag curvature) but generally are not Ricci-flat.
Building on previous results, we complete the classification of compact oriented Einstein 4-manifolds with det (W^+) > 0. There are, up to diffeomorphism, exactly 15 manifolds that carry such metrics, and, on each of these manifolds, such metrics sweep out exactly one connected component of the corresponding Einstein moduli space.
We characterize the Lie derivative of spinor fields from a variational point of view by resorting to the theory of the Lie derivative of sections of gauge-natural bundles. Noether identities from the gauge-natural invariance of the first variational derivative of the Einstein(--Cartan)--Dirac Lagrangian provide restrictions on the Lie derivative of fields.
Let $(M^n,g)$, $n \ge 4$, be a compact simply-connected Riemannian manifold with nonnegative isotropic curvature. Given $0<l\le L$, we prove that there exists $\eps = \eps (l,L,n)$ satisfying the following: If the scalar curvature $s$ of $g$ satisfies $$ l \le s \le L $$ and the Einstein tensor satisfies $$ | Ric - \frac {s}{n}g | \le \eps$$ then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a symmetric space of compact type. This is a smooth analogue of the result of S. Brendle that a compact Einstein manifold with nonnegative isotropic curvature is isometric to a locally symmetric space.
In this paper we first use the result in $[12]$ to remove the assumption of the $L^2$ boundedness of Weyl curvature in the gap theorem in $[9]$ and then obtain a gap theorem for a class of conformally compact Einstein manifolds with very large renormalized volume. We also uses the blow-up method to derive curvature estimates for conformally compact Einstein manifolds with large renormalized volume. The second part of this paper is on conformally compact Einstein manifolds with conformal infinities of large Yamabe constants. Based on the idea in $[15]$ we manage to give the complete proof of th…
Given an Einstein structure with positive scalar curvature on a four-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, that is $Ric=λg$ for some positive constant $λ$. For convenience, the Ricci curvature is always normalized to $Ric=1$. A basic problem is to classify four-dimensional Einstein manifolds with positive or nonnegative curvature and $Ric=1$. In this paper, we firstly show that if the sectional curvature satisfies $K\le M_1= \frac{\sqrt{3}}2\approx 0.866025$, then the sectional curvature will be nonnegative. Next, we prove a family of rigidity theorems of Einstein four-manifolds with nonnegative s…
We introduce the notion of Kähler manifolds that are almost Einstein and we define a generalized mean curvature vector field along submanifolds in them. We prove that Lagrangian submanifolds remain Lagrangian, when deformed in direction of the generalized mean curvature vector field. For a Kähler manifold that is almost Einstein, and which in addition has a trivial canonical bundle, we show that the generalized mean curvature vector field of a Lagrangian submanifold is the dual vector field associated to the Lagrangian angle.
In this paper we study warped product Einstein metrics over spaces with constant scalar curvature. We call such a manifold rigid if the universal cover of the base is Einstein or is isometric to a product of Einstein manifolds. When the base is three dimensional and the dimension of the fiber is greater than one we show that the space is always rigid. We also exhibit examples of solvable four dimensional Lie groups that can be used as the base space of non-rigid warped product Einstein metrics showing that the result is not true in dimension greater than three. We also give some further natura…
