Understanding the equation of state of dense nuclear matter is a fundamental challenge for nuclear physics. It is especially timely and interesting challenge as we have reached a period where neutron stars, which contain the most dense nuclear matter in the Universe, are now being studied in completely new ways, from gravitational waves to satellite based telescopes. We review the theoretical approaches to calculating this equation of state which involve a change in the structure of the baryons.
For neutron stars with hyperon-mixed core, neutrino emissivity is studied under the equation of state, obtained by introducing repulsive three-body force universal for all baryons so as to assure the maximum mass compatible with the observation. By paying attention to the density-dependence of critical temperatures of baryon superfluids, which reflect the nature of baryon-baryon interaction and control neutron star cooling, we show what neutrino emission processes are efficient in the regions with and without hyperon mixing and remark its implications related to neutron star cooling.
The low-energy breakup differential cross sections of the neutron-deuteron (nd) scattering are studied by employing the energy-independent version of the quark-model baryon-baryon interaction fss2. This interaction reproduces almost all the breakup differential cross sections predicted by the meson-exchange potentials for the neutron incident energies $E_n \leq$ 65 MeV. The space star anomaly of 13 MeV nd scattering is not improved even in our model. Some overestimation of the breakup differential cross sections at $E_n$=22.7 - 65 MeV implies that systematic studies of various breakup configur…
The neutron-deuteron (nd) scattering is solved in the Faddeev formalism, employing the energy-independent version of the quark-model baryon-baryon interaction fss2. The differential cross sections and the spin polarization of the elastic scattering up to the neutron incident energy $E_n=65$ MeV are well reproduced without reinforcing fss2 with the three-body force. The vector analyzing-power of the neutron, $A_y(θ)$, in the energy region $E_n$ < 25 MeV is largely improved in comparison with the predictions by the meson-exchange potentials, thus yielding a partial solution of the long-standing …
Recent developments of chiral effective field theory (ChEFT) applications to nuclear and neutron matter are summarized, with special emphasis on a (non-perturbative) extension using functional renormalisation group methods. Topics include: nuclear thermodynamics, extrapolations to dense baryonic matter and constraints from neutron star observables. Hyperon-nuclear interactions derived from SU(3) will be discussed with reference to the "hyperon puzzle" in neutron star matter.

We solve the neutron-deuteron (nd) scattering in the Faddeev formalism, employing the NN sector of the quark-model baryon-baryon interaction fss2. The energy-dependence of the NN interaction, inherent to the resonating-group formulation of the quark-model baryon-baryon interaction, is eliminated by the standard off-shell transformation utilizing the normalization kernel of two-cluster systems. An extra nonlocality originating from this procedure is very important to reproduce all the nd scattering observables below E_n < 65 MeV. A new algorithm to solve the Alt-Glassberger-Sandhas (AGS) equati…
We present results from many-body calculations for β-stable neutron star matter with nucleonic and hyperonic degrees of freedom, employing the most recent parametrizations of the baryon-baryon interaction of the Nijmegen group. It is found that the only strange baryons emerging in β-stable matter up to total baryonic densities of 1.2 fm^{-3} are Σ^- and Λ. The corresponding equations of state are thence used to compute properties of neutron stars such as the masses, moments of inertia and radii. We also study the possibility of forming a hyperon superfluid and discuss its implications for neut…
Updated constraints from neutron star masses and radii impose stronger restrictions on the equation of state for baryonic matter at high densities and low temperatures. The existence of two-solar-mass neutron stars rules out many soft equations of state with prominent "exotic" compositions. The present work reviews the conditions required for the pressure as a function of baryon density in order to satisfy these new constraints. Several scenarios for sufficiently stiff equations of state are evaluated. The common starting point is a realistic description of both nuclear and neutron matter base…
The inclusive spectra of preequilibrium nucleons produced in low-energy antiproton-nucleus collisions are thoroughly investigated within the framework of the Lanzhou quantum molecular dynamics model for the first time. All possible reaction channels such as elastic scattering, annihilation, charge exchange and inelastic scattering in antibaryon-baryon, baryon-baryon and meson-baryon collisions have been included in the transport model. The unexpected neutron/proton ratio in comparison to the pion and proton induced reactions is caused from the isospin effects of pion-nucleon collisions and the…
We present results from Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculatons for beta stable neutron star matter with nucleonic and hyperonic degress degrees of freedom, employing the most recent parametrizations of the baryon-baryon interaction of the Nijmegen group. It is found that the only strange baryons emergin in beta stable matter up to total barionic densities of 1.2 fm^-3 are $Σ^-$ and $Λ$. The corresponding equations of state are then used to compute properties of neutron stars such as masses and radii.
The cross section for radiative thermal neutron capture on ${}^{3}He$ ($\He3 +n \to \He4 +γ$; known as the $hen$ reaction) is calculated based on heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. The relevant M1 operators are derived up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N${}^3$LO). The initial and final nuclear wave functions are obtained from the rigorous Faddeev-Yakubovski equations for five sets of realistic nuclear interactions. Up to N${}^3$LO, the M1 operators contain two low-energy constants, which appear as the coefficients of non-derivative two-nucleon contact terms. After determining …
We consider the effect of hard core repulsion in the baryon-baryon interaction at short distance to the properties of a neutron star. We obtain that, even with hyperons in the interior of a neutron star, the neutron star mass can be as large as $\sim 2 M_\odot$.
In this chapter, we investigate the structure and composition of hot neutron star matter and proto-neutron stars. Such objects are made of baryonic matter that is several times denser than atomic nuclei and tens of thousands times hotter than the matter in the core of our Sun. The relativistic finite-temperature Green function formalism is used to formulate the expressions that determine the properties of such matter in the framework of the density-dependent mean field approach. Three different sets of nuclear parametrizations are used to solve the many-body equations and to determine the mode…
The presence of exotic hadrons, such as hyperons and $Δ$ isobars, in the dense nuclear matter in their cores has been shown to produce important changes in the properties of neutron stars. Within the quark-meson coupling model, we show that the many-body forces generated by the change in the internal quark structure of the baryons in the strong scalar mean fields generated in dense nuclear matter prohibit the appearance of $Δ$ isobars.
In the framework of relativistic mean field theory, the relativistic neutrino emissivity of the nucleonic and hyperonic direct Urca processes in the degenerate baryon matter of neutron stars are studied. We investigate particularly the influence of the isovector scalar interaction which is considered by exchanging $δ$ meson on the nucleonic and hyperonic direct Urca processes. The results indicate that $δ$ mesons lead to obvious enhancement of the total neutrino emissivity, which must result in more rapid cooling rate of neutron star matter.
We investigate medium effects due to density-dependent magnetic moments of baryons on neutron stars under strong magnetic fields. If we allow the variation of anomalous magnetic moments (AMMs) of baryons in dense matter under strong magnetic fields, AMMs of nucleons are enhanced to be larger than those of hyperons. The enhancement naturally affects the chemical potentials of baryons to be large and leads to the increase of a proton fraction. Consequently, it causes the suppression of hyperons, resulting in the stiffness of the equation of state. Under the presumed strong magnetic fields, we ev…
To sustain a neutron star with about two times the solar mass, multi baryons including hyperons are expected to produce repulsive effects in the interior of its high baryon-density region. To examine possible quark-Pauli repulsion among the baryons, we solve the eigenvalue problem of the quark antisymmetrizer for three octet-baryons that are described by most compact spatial configurations. We find that the Pauli blocking effect is weak in the $Λnn$ system, while it is strong in the $Σ^-nn$ system. The appearance of the $Σ^-$ hyperon is suppressed in the neutron star interior but no quark-Paul…
We present results from Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations for $β$-stable neutron star matter with nucleonic and hyperonic degrees of freedom employing the most recent parametrizations of the baryon-baryon interaction of the Nijmegen group. Only $Σ^-$ and $Λ$ are present up to densities $\sim 7ρ_0$. The corresponding equations of state are then used to compute properties of neutron stars such as masses and radii.
In this work, we study magnetic field effects on neutron star matter containing the baryon octet and additional heavier spin 3/2 baryons (the $Δ$'s). We make use of two different relativistic hadronic models that contain an additional vector-isovector self interaction for the mesons: one version of a relativistic mean field (RMF) model and the Chiral Mean Field (CMF) model. We find that both the additional interaction and a strong magnetic field enhance the $Δ$ baryon population in dense matter, while decreasing the relative density of hyperons. At the same time that the vector-isovector meson…
The equation of state for neutron matter is calculated within relativistic Hartree-Fock approximation. The tensor couplings of vector mesons to baryons are included, and the change of baryon internal structure in matter is also considered using the quark-meson coupling model. We obtain the maximum neutron-star mass of $\sim 2.0 M_\odot$, which is consistent with the recently observed, precise mass, $1.97\pm0.04 M_{\odot}$. The Fock contribution is very important and, in particular, the inclusion of tensor coupling is vital to obtain such large mass. The baryon structure variation in matter als…
Baryon and quark superfluidity in the cooling of neutron stars are investigated. Observations could constrain combinations of the neutron or Lambda-hyperon pairing gaps and the star's mass. However, in a hybrid star with a mixed phase of hadrons and quarks, quark gaps larger than a few tenths of an MeV render quark matter virtually invisible for cooling. If the quark gap is smaller, quark superfluidity could be important, but its effects will be nearly impossible to distinguish from those of other baryonic constituents.
Exotic new particles carrying baryon number and with mass of order the nucleon mass have been proposed for various reasons including baryogenesis, dark matter, mirror worlds, and the neutron lifetime puzzle. We show that the existence of neutron stars with mass greater than 0.7 $M_\odot$ places severe constraints on such particles, requiring them to be heavier than 1.2 GeV or to have strongly repulsive self-interactions.
We study photoproduction reactions for Theta^+, which was recently observed as a candidate of an exotic five quark state uudd(bar s). We employ effective lagrangian interactions in the linear and non-linear formalism of chiral symmetry and investigate two cases of spin and parity of Theta^+, J^P = 1/2^+ and 1/2^-. We calculate cross sections and discuss possibilities to discriminate one from the other.
The neutron lifetime anomaly has been used to motivate the introduction of new physics with hidden-sector particles coupled to baryon number, and on which neutron stars provide powerful constraints. Although the neutron lifetime anomaly may eventually prove to be of mundane origin, we use it as motivation for a broader review of the ways that baryon number violation, be it real or apparent, and dark sectors can intertwine and how neutron star observables, both present and future, can constrain them.
We demonstrate the different effect of different baryons impurities on the static properties of nuclei within the framework of the relativistic mean-field model. Systematic calculations show that $Λ_c^+$ and $Λ_b$ has the same attracting role as $Λ$ hyperon does in lighter hypernuclei. $Ξ^-$ and $Ξ_c^0$ hyperon has the attracting role only for the protons distribution, and has a repulsive role for the neutrons distribution. On the contrary, $Ξ^0$ and $Ξ^+_c$ hyperon attracts surrounding neutrons and reveals a repulsive force to the protons. We find that the different effect of different baryon…
We study the thermodynamical properties of compressed baryonic matter with strangeness within non-relativistic energy density functional models with a particular emphasis on possible phase transitions found earlier for a simple $n,p,e,Λ$-mixture. The aim of the paper is twofold: I) examining the phase structure of the complete system, including the full baryonic octet and II) testing the sensitivity of the results to the model parameters. We find that, associated to the onset of the different hyperonic families, up to three separate strangeness-driven phase transitions may occur. Consequently,…
Using the quark-meson coupling model with the cloudy bag, we construct the equation of state for neutron stars with hyperons in SU(3) flavor symmetry. The hyperfine interaction due to the gluon exchange and the pion-cloud effect inside a baryon is taken into account in vacuum and nuclear matter. We investigate how the quark degrees of freedom and the exchanges of gluon and pion between two quarks affect the properties of nuclear and neutron-star matter. It is found that the variation of baryon substructure in matter plays an important role in supporting massive neutron stars.
In this contribution we review the dynamics of hyperons with nucleons and nuclear matter, paying a special attention to hypernuclei. We also discuss the presence of hyperons in the inner core of neutron stars and the consequences for the structure of these compact stars.
We demonstrate that the observation of neutron stars with masses greater than one solar mass places severe demands on any exotic neutron decay mode that could explain the discrepancy between beam and bottle measurements of the neutron lifetime. If the neutron can decay to a stable, feebly-interacting dark fermion, the maximum possible mass of a neutron star is 0.7 solar masses, while all well-measured neutron star masses exceed one solar mass. The survival of $2 M_\odot$ neutron stars therefore indicates that any explanation beyond the Standard Model for the neutron lifetime puzzle requires da…
The question of whether quark matter exists in neutron stars is a long standing one. Generally one finds that a first order phase transition from baryons to quarks softens the equation of state so much that the star would collapse into a black hole. We consider a crossover equation of state, similar to the crossover that is found in lattice QCD studies at finite temperature and zero or small baryon chemical potentials. We find that with reasonable parameters it may be possible to support neutron stars up to about 2.2 solar masses. In that case 1 to 10% of the pressure would be contributed by q…
The difference of the moment of inertia of the neutron star PSR J0348 + 0432 and that of its proto neutron star is studied in the framework of the relativistic mean field theory considering baryon octet. The temperature of the proto neutron star PSR J0348+0432 is chosen as T=5 MeV. The calculations show that the central baryon number density of the proto neutron star PSR J0348+0432 is in the range 0.623$\sim$0.813 fm$^{-3}$, decreased by 2$\sim$7\% compared to that of the neutron star PSR J0348+0432. The radius of the proto neutron star PSR J0348+0432 is in the range 13.101$\sim$12.419 km, inc…
Properties of nuclear and neutron matter are discussed in a nonlinear $σ$-$ω$-$ρ$ mean-field approximation with self-interactions and mixing-interactions of mesons and baryons. The nonlinear interactions are renormalized by employing the theory of conserving approximations, which results in a thermodynamically consistent approximation that maintains Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem and Landau's requirement of quasiparticles. The approximation is equivalent to the Hartree approximation with {\it effective masses} and {\it effective coupling constants} of baryons and mesons. The effective masses and …
This is an extensive work to our previous paper \cite{key-08} studied on the D0-D4/D8 holographic system. We compute the three-body force for baryons with the D0-D4/D8 matrix model derived in \cite{key-08} with considering the non-zero QCD vacuum. We obtain the three-body force at short distances but modified by the appearance of the smeared D0-branes i.e. considering the effects from the non-trivial QCD vacuum. We firstly test our matrix model in the case of 't Hooft instanton and then in two more realistic case: (1) three-neutrons with averaged spins and (2) proton-proton-neutron (or proton-…
The S-wave effective range parameters of the neutron-deuteron (nd) scattering are derived in the Faddeev formalism, using a nonlocal Gaussian potential based on the quark-model baryon-baryon interaction fss2. The spin-doublet low-energy eigenphase shift is sufficiently attractive to reproduce predictions by the AV18 plus Urbana three-nucleon force, yielding the observed value of the doublet scattering length and the correct differential cross sections below the deuteron breakup threshold. This conclusion is consistent with the previous result for the triton binding energy, which is nearly repr…
Using the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach including the hyperon degrees of freedom, we investigate the properties of neutron-star matter. To handle the hyperons in matter, we first examine the importance of the space part of baryon self-energies at high densities, and secondly study the effect of negative-energy states of baryons, which can provide an unambiguous relationship between the in-medium reaction matrices for baryon-baryon scattering and the baryon self-energies. We solve the coupled, Bethe-Salpeter equations in the nuclear-matter rest frame by using the Bonn potentials.…
Very recent eta and K+ photoproduction data on the proton from threshold up to E = 2.6 GeV are interpreted within a chiral constituent quark formalism, which embodies all known nucleon and hyperon resonances. Possible contributions from an additional S11 resonance are presented.
Three-body forces acting on a $Λ$ hyperon in a nuclear medium are investigated, with special focus on the so-called hyperon puzzle in neutron stars. The hyperon-nucleon two-body interaction deduced from SU(3) chiral effective field theory is employed at next-to-leading order. Hyperon-nucleon three-body forces are approximated using saturation by decuplet baryons and are transcribed to density-dependent effective two-body interactions. These together are taken as input in a Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone equation with explicit treatment of the $ΛN\leftrightarrowΣN$ and $ΛNN\leftrightarrowΣNN$ couple…
We explore the possibility of formation of $Δ$ baryons (1232 MeV) in neutron star matter in an effective chiral model within the relativistic mean-field framework. With variation in delta-meson couplings, consistent with the constraints imposed on them, the resulting equation of state is obtained and the neutron star properties are calculated for static and spherical configuration. Within the framework of our model the critical densities of formation of $Δ$s and the properties of neutron stars are found to be very sensitive to the iso-vector coupling compared to the scalar or vector couplings.…
We use covariant density functional theory to obtain the equation of state (EoS) of matter in compact stars at non-zero temperature, including the full baryon octet as well as the $Δ(1232)$ resonance states. Global properties of hot $Δ$-admixed hypernuclear stars are computed for fixed values of entropy per baryon ($S/A$) and lepton fraction ($Y_L$). Universal relations between the moment of inertia, quadrupole moment, tidal deformability, and compactness of compact stars are established for fixed values of $S/A$ and $Y_L$ that are analogous to those known for cold catalyzed compact stars. We …
By applying a relativistic mean-field description of neutron star matter with density dependent couplings, we analyse the properties of two different matter compositions: nucleonic matter with delta baryons and nucleonic matter with hyperons and delta baryons. The delta-meson couplings are allowed to vary within a wide range of values obtained by experimental data, while the hyperon-meson couplings are fitted to hypernuclear properties. Neutron star properties with no deconfinement phase transition are studied. It is verified that many models are excluded because the effective nucleon mass bec…
New astrophysical instruments such as skA (square kilometer Array) and IXO (formerly Constellation X) promise the discovery of tens of thousands of new isolated rotating neutron stars (pulsars), neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs), and soft gamma repeaters (SGRs). Many of these neutron stars will experience dramatic density changes over their active lifetimes, driven by either stellar spin-up or spin-down, which may trigger phase transitions in their dense baryonic cores. More than that, accretion of matter onto neutron stars in LMXBs is believed to…
We study the effects of the finite size of baryons on the equation of state of homogeneous hadronic matter. The finite extension of hadrons is introduced in order to improve the performance of field theoretical models at very high densities. We simulate the in-medium averaged baryon-baryon strong repulsion at very short distances by introducing a Van der Waals like normalization of the fields. This is done in the framework of the Quark Meson Coupling model, that allows to take care of the quark structure of baryons. Since within this model the confinement volume evolves with the fields configu…
We investigate the QCD phase diagram of isospin asymmetric matter using the Polyakov loop extended quark meson (PQM) model with vector interaction. The critical point temperature is found to decrease in isospin asymmetric matter and disappear at large isospin chemical potential. We also discuss the QCD phase transition in the neutron star core. From comparison of the QCD phase diagram in PQM and corresponding baryon and isospin chemical potentials of neutron star matter in relativistic mean field models, we show that the order of the chiral phase transition in the neutron star core could be cr…
The equation of state (EOS) for nuclear and neutron rich matter is investigated in a Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) model. New shell states are found that minimize the free energy per baryon, calculated in a spherical Wigner-Seitz (WS) approximation, over a significant range of baryon densities. These shell states, that have both inside and outside surfaces, minimize the Coulomb energy of large proton number configurations at the expense of a larger surface energy. This is related to a possible depression in the central density of super heavy nuclei. As the baryon density increases, we find the…
The possible $^{1}S_{0}$ protonic superfluidity is investigated in neutron star matter, and the corresponding energy gap as a function of baryonic density is calculated on the basis of BCS gap equation. We have discussed particularly the influence of hyperon degrees of freedom on $^{1}S_{0}$ protonic superfluidity. It is found that the appearance of hyperons leads to a slight decrease of $^{1}S_{0}$ protonic pairing energy gap in most density range of existing $^{1}S_{0}$ protonic superfluidity. However, when the baryonic density $ρ_{B}>$0.377 (or 0.409) fm${^{-3}}$ for TM1 (or TMA) parameter …
We investigate the nuclear collective excitations of Wigner-Seitz cells containing nuclear clusters immersed in a gas of neutrons. This baryonic non-uniform system is specific to the structure of inner crust matter of neutron stars. The collective excitations are studied in the framework of a spherical Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov + Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation, formulated in coordinate representation. The calculations are done for two representative Wigner-Seitz cells with baryonic density equal to 0.02 fm$^{-3}$ and 0.08 fm$^{-3}$. It is shown that the excitations with low multipolari…
