The neutron lifetime anomaly has been used to motivate the introduction of new physics with hidden-sector particles coupled to baryon number, and on which neutron stars provide powerful constraints. Although the neutron lifetime anomaly may eventually prove to be of mundane origin, we use it as motivation for a broader review of the ways that baryon number violation, be it real or apparent, and dark sectors can intertwine and how neutron star observables, both present and future, can constrain them.
We propose an unified model of dark matter and baryon asymmetry in a lepto-philic world above the electroweak scale. We provide an example where the inflaton decay products subsequently generate a lepton asymmetry and a dark matter abundance with an unique coupling in the early universe, while the present day decay of the dark matter through the same coupling gives rise the observed cosmic ray anomalies at PAMELA and Fermi Large Area Telescope.
We show that black holes with a Schwarzschild radius of the order of the electroweak scale may act as seeds for the baryon number violation within the Standard model via sphaleron transitions. The corresponding rate is faster than the one in the pure vacuum and baryon number violation around black holes can take place during the evolution of the universe after the electroweak phase transition. We show however that this does not pose any threat for a pre-existing baryon asymmetry in the universe.
Using the examples of pion-nucleon scattering and the nucleon mass we analyze the convergence of perturbative series in the framework of baryon chiral perturbation theory. For both cases we sum up sets of an infinite number of diagrams by solving equations exactly and compare the solutions with the perturbative contributions.
Unlike the octet baryons for $N_f=3$, there is no skyrmion coming from the $η^\prime$ meson. It is instead described as a fractional quantum Hall droplet, a pancake or a pita involving a singular $η^\prime$ ring in which Chern-Simons fields live. By incorporating hidden local symmetry and hidden scale symmetry in nuclear dynamics, I describe how to access baryon-charged quantum Hall droplets in dense nuclear matter in terms of the nuclear scale-chiral effective field theory approach ``G$n$EFT" with the $U_A(1)$ anomaly taken into account. I discuss how the single-flavor baryon that I will call…
Space-based experiments offer sensitivity to numerous unmeasured effects involving Lorentz and CPT violation. We provide a classification of clock sensitivities and present explicit expressions for time variations arising in such experiments from nonzero coefficients in the Lorentz- and CPT-violating Standard-Model Extension.
We analyze Doppler-effect experiments in terms of a general framework for violations of Lorentz symmetry: the Standard-Model Extension. These experiments are found to be sensitive to heretofore unprobed combinations of Lorentz-violation coefficients associated with protons and electrons. New bounds at the level of $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-8}$ for proton coefficients and $10^{-2}$ for electron coefficients emerge from a recent experiment.
We study implications of spontaneous CP-violation in minimal susy models for CP-asymmetries in rare $B,\bar B$-decays. In particular, we estimate characteristic values of the angles of the unitarity triangle and show that sizeable CP-violating effects result from $B-\bar B$ mixing only. Significant deviations from the SM predictions are pointed out.
This work mainly introduces the recent experimental process on probing the effect of Lorentz violation (LV) at d = 6, which is a specially striped-type structure experiment to increase the signal of LV. Besides, we also proposed a new experimental design using the striped geometry with triplex modulation to independently constrain the 14 LV coefficients with a higher sensitivity.
In this review we demonstrate physics potential of a photon linear collider by studying the neutral Higgs-boson sector of the MSSM in which interesting CP-violating Higgs mixing could arise via radiative corrections.
The presence of non-unitary neutrino mixing can affect the measurement of the three-neutrino leptonic Dirac CP phase and hamper efforts to probe CP violation due to degeneracies of the extra non-unitary CP phase with the standard CP phase. We study the effect of including non-unitarity on probing CP violation with the long-baseline experiments NO$ν$A, T2K and DUNE. We analyze the effect of non-unitary mixing at the level of oscillation probabilities associated with the relevant baselines, and present the CP violation sensitivity for the individual experiments and their combination. Our results…
Proton stability seems to constrain rather strongly any baryon number violating process. We investigate the possibility of baryon number violating processes involving right-handed dynamics or higher generation quarks. Our results strongly suggest that there will be no possibility to observe baryon number violation in tau or higher generation quark decays, at any future machine.
Possible $CP$-violation in top-quark couplings is discussed. It is shown that the lepton-energy distributions in $e^+ e^- \to t\bar{t} \to \ell^+\ell^-X / \ell^\pm X$ at next linear colliders (NLC) could give us useful information for this study. The statistical significance of $CP$-violating-parameter determination is estimated.
The oscillation of neutrino flavors, due to its interferometry nature, is extremely sensitive to the phase differences developing during the propagation of neutrinos. In this paper we investigate the effect of the Violation of Equivalence Principle (VEP) on the flavor oscillation probabilities of atmospheric and cosmic neutrinos observed at neutrino telescopes such as IceCube. Assuming a general parameterization of VEP, dubbed extended parameter space, we show that the synergy between the collected data of high energy atmospheric and cosmic neutrinos severely constrains the VEP parameters. Als…
We examine relation between neutrino oscillation parameters and prediction of lepton flavor violation, in light of deviations from tri-bimaximal mixing. Our study shows that upcoming experimental searches for lepton flavor violation process can provide useful implications for neutrino mass spectrum and mixing angles. With simple structure of heavy right-handed neutrino and supersymmetry breaking sectors, the discovery of tau \to mu gamma decay determines neutrino mass hierarchy if large (order 0.1) reactor angle is established.
The possible existence of light and heavy sterile neutrinos may give rise to direct and indirect unitarity violation of the $3\times3$ lepton mixing matrix respectively. In the current work we study the potential of future accelerator neutrino facilities in probing the unitarity violation effects. Taking DUNE, T2HK and a low-energy Neutrino Factory (LENF) as working examples of future accelerator neutrino facilities, we study the distinct effects of direct and indirect unitarity violation on the discovery reach of the leptonic CP violation and precision measurements of $θ_{23}$ in the three ne…
We discuss the formulation of the general two-Higgs doublet model type III, which incorporates flavor changing neutral scalar interactions (FCNSI) and CP violation from several sources. CP violation can arise either from Yukawa terms or from the Higgs potential, and it can explicit or spontaneous. We discuss the case that includes CP violation with Yukawa textures to control FCNSI and evaluate the CP asymmetry for the decay h-> c-b+ W-, which may allow to test the patterns of FCNSI and CP violation, that arises in these models.
The CP properties of Higgs bosons can be probed through their s-channel resonance productions via photon-photon collisions by use of circularly and/or linearly polarized backscattered laser photons at a TeV-scale linear e^+ e^- collider. Exploiting this powerful tool, we investigate in detail the Higgs sector of the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model with explicit CP violation.
Electroweak baryon number violation may play a crucial role for the creation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the early universe. In this talk, we review the basic mechanism, which relies on the behavior of chiral fermions in nontrivial Yang-Mills gauge field backgrounds.
We derive the low energy effective theory for two brane system with bulk complex scalar fields. Then we find that higher order corrections to the effective equation for scalar fields on the brane lead us to the baryon number(B) violating process if the complex scalar field is regarded as a particle carrying the baryon number current. We see that the motion of the brane leads us the baryon number violation via the current-curvature coupling even if the potential for scalar fields do not exist. We also estimate the net baryon number assuming a C/CP violating interaction.
A significant asymmetry in baryon/antibaryon yields in the central region of high energy collisions is observed when the initial state has non-zero baryon charge. This asymmetry is connected with the possibility of a baryon charge diffusion in rapidity space. Evidently, such a diffusion should decrease the baryon charge in the fragmentation region leading to the corresponding decrease of the multiplicity of leading baryons. As a result, a new mechanism for Feynman scaling violation in the fragmentation region is obtained. We present the quantitative predictions for the Feynman scaling violatio…
A simple TeV scale model for baryon and lepton number violation is presented, where neutrino mass arises via a one-loop radiative seesaw effect and B-violation obeys $ΔB=2$ selection rule. The stability of proton is connected to the neutrino mass generation. Matter-antimatter asymmetry is generated in this model via resonant baryogenesis mechanism.
We perform realistic simulations of the current and future long baseline experiments such as T2K, NO$ν$A, DUNE and T2HK in order to determine their ultimate potential in probing neutrino oscillation parameters. We quantify the potential of these experiments to underpin the octant of the atmospheric angle $θ_{23}$ as well as the value and sign of the CP phase $δ_{CP}$.
We discuss how a possible violation of the combined symmetry CPT in the B meson system can be investigated at the LHC. We show how a tagged and an untagged analysis of the decay modes of both B(d) and B(s) mesons can lead not only to a possible detection of a CPT-violating new physics but also to an understanding of its precise nature. The implication of CPT violation to a large mixing phase in the B(s) system is also discussed.
We discuss the potential of observing effects of CP-violation phases in squark decay chains at the LHC. As the CP-odd observable, we use the asymmetry composed by triple products of final state momenta. There are good prospects of observing these effects using the method of kinematic reconstruction for the final and intermediate state particles. We also discuss the main experimental factors and the expected sensitivity.
We investigate the $B+L$ violation process by performing three-dimensional lattice simulations in an electroweak theory with first-order phase transition and the electroweak sphaleron decay. The simulation results indicate that the Chern-Simons number changes along with the helical magnetic field production when the sphaleron decay occurs. Our study suggests that, for the electroweak phase transition with nucleation rate being smaller than $\sim \mathcal{O}(10)$, the helical magnetic field with the fractional magnetic helicity $ε_M\leq 0.2$ can be probed by Cherenkov Telescope Array through th…
We report on the calculation of the CP-violating form factor $F_3$ and the corresponding electric dipole moment for charmed baryons in the spin-1/2 sector generated by the QCD $θ$-term. We work in the framework of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory within the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme up to next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion.
In supersymmetric models where the gravitino is the lightest superparticle, the next-to-lightest superparticle (NLSP) is long-lived, and hence could be collected and studied in detail. We study the prospects of direct detection of lepton flavour violation in charged slepton NLSP decays. Mixing angles in the slepton sector as small as ~ 3\times 10^{-2} (9\times 10^{-3}) could be probed at the 90% confidence level if 3\times 10^3 (3\times 10^4) sleptons could be collected.
In the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), the μ-parameter and the trilinear coupling A_t may be generically complex and can affect various observables at B factories. Imposing the edm constraints, we find that there is no new large phase shift in the B^0 - \bar{B^0} mixing, CP violating dilepton asymmetry is smaller than 0.1 %, and the direct CP violation in B\to X_s γcan be as large as \sim \pm 16 %.
The relation between shapes of cosmic string and baryon number violation is investigated. If there exist fermionic zero modes on the string, using bosonization technique, it is possible to obtain the effective action which describes the fermion coupled to the arbitrarily shaped cosmic string. The relation between baryon number and the sum of the writhing number and linking number of the cosmic strings is rederived. Baryons are created on the strings as the shapes of the cosmic strings change. Furthermore we discuss implications of this baryon number violating process to baryogenesis.
We argue that three-quark excited states naturally group into quartets, split into two parity doublets, and that the mass splittings between these parity partners decrease higher up in the baryon spectrum. This decreasing mass difference can be used to probe the running quark mass in the mid-infrared power-law regime. A measurement of masses of high-partial wave Delta* resonances should be sufficient to unambiguously establish the approximate degeneracy. We test this concept with the first computation of excited high-j baryon masses in a chirally invariant quark model.
One or more scalar leptoquarks with masses around a few TeV may provide a solution to some of the flavor anomalies that have been observed. We discuss the impact of such new degrees on baryon number violation when the theory is embedded in a Pati-Salam model. The Pati-Salam embedding can suppress renormalizable and dimension-five baryon number violation in some cases. Our work extends the results of Assad, Grinstein, and Fornal who considered the same issue for vector leptoquarks.
We analyze the time-like processes gamma gamma -> B Bbar and p p-bar -> gamma M at large Mandelstam variables within the handbag approach for which the process amplitudes factorize in hard partonic subprocesses and annihilation form factor. The latter represent moments of baryon-antibaryon generalized parton distributions. Symmetry relations restrict the number of independent annihilation form factors for the ground state baryons drastically. We determine these form factors from the present BELLE data on gamma gamma -> B Bbar with the help of simplifying assumptions. The knowledge of these for…
We revisit the topic of triple-product asymmetries which probe CP violation through differential distributions. We construct distributions with well-defined discrete symmetry properties and characterize the asymmetries formed upon them. It is stressed that the simplest asymmetries may not be optimal. We explore systematic generalizations having limited reliance on the process dynamics and phase-space parametrization. They exploit larger fractions of the information contained in differential distributions and may lead to increased sensitivities to CP violation. Our detailed treatment of the cas…
Observation in astronomy suggests that our Universe contains an abundance of matter over antimatter, which can only be explained if the combined CP symmetry is violated. Studies of CP violation have driven the flavor physics with the aim of testing the Standard Model of particle physics and searching for physics beyond. CP violation is discovered in strange, beauty and charm meson systems, however no conclusive sign of CP violation in baryon decays has been observed yet. This review summarizes CP violation studies performed by the LHCb experiment in charmless decays and rare decays of beauty b…
We study the measurement of the quark fragmentation functions for spin-1/2 baryon production ($Λ$ and $\bar Λ$, in particular) in unpolarized $e^+e^-$ annihilation. The spin-dependent fragmentation functions $\hat g_1(z)$ and $\hat h_1(z)$ can be probed in the process as a result of quark-antiquark spin correlation and the weak decay of the baryons. The relevant cross section is expressed as a product of the two-jet cross-section, the fragmentation functions, and the differential width of the hyperon decay.
If massive neutrinos are Majorana particles, then the lepton number should be violated and neutrino-antineutrino oscillations will take place. In this talk, we present the properties of CP violation in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations with a non-unitary leptonic flavor mixing matrix, which naturally arises in the type-I seesaw model due to the mixing between light and heavy Majorana neutrinos. Taking into account current experimental bounds on the leptonic unitarity violation, we show that the CP asymmetries induced by the non-unitary mixing parameters can significantly deviate from those in…
We investigate the effect of CP violation in the leptonic sector. Due to the tiny neutrino masses its value is predicted to be very small and it is far beyond the experimental reach of the current experiments. Recently, the magic baseline experiment from CERN to INO (Indian Neutrino Observatory) with L=7152 km has been proposed to get a sensitive limit on $\sin θ_{13}$. We show that due to such magic baseline neutrino beam it is possible to observe CP violation in the neutrino sector upto several percent for the beam energy between (1-10) GeV.
In direct analogy to the 4-body decay of a heavy scalar particle, the 4-point correlation function of primordial fluctuations carries P and CP information. The CP violation appears as a P-odd angular dependence in the imaginary part of the trispectrum in momentum space. We construct a model with axion-like couplings which leads to observably large CP-violating trispectrum for future surveys. Furthermore, we show the importance of on-shell particle production in observing P- and CP-violating signals. It is impossible to observe these signals from local 4-scalar EFT operators that respect dS iso…
It had been suggested to probe CP violation in τ \rightarrow νKπ decays with K0 -K ^{-}0 oscillation to produce ACP(τ- \rightarrow νKSπ-) = (0.36\pm0.01)%. BaBar has found ACP(τ- \rightarrow νKSπ-[\geq π0]) = (-0.36 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.11)% - i.e., 2.8 sigma difference with SM prediction. It is discussed, why one needs to probe ACP(τ \rightarrow νKπ), ACP(τ \rightarrow νK2π) and ACP(τ \rightarrow νK3π) separately to establish the existence of New Dynamics and its features. It should be possible at SuperB & Super-Belle experiments.
The possibility of discovering heavy Majorana neutrinos and lepton number violation via the like sign dilepton signal at hadron super- colliders is investigated. The cross-sections for the production of these neutrinos singly as well as in pairs are computed both in three and four generation scenarios within the framework of the gauge group $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ and the dominant processes are identified. The suppression of the Standard model background by suitable kinematical cuts is also discussed.
We consider, both for unpolarized and longitudinally polarized electron beams, the production of a top quark pair in e+e- collisions with subsequent semileptonic top and nonleptonic anti-top decay and vice versa and investigate optimized angular correlations which are sensitive to CP non-conservation in the top quark production vertex. We calculate these correlations for two-Higgs--doublet extensions and the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (SM) with CP violation beyond the Kobayashi-Maskawa phase. While the sensitivity of the optimal correlation for tracing dispersive CP…
Short-range experiment with striped design of the test and source masses offers uniquely sensitive probes for Lorentz Violation. In our previous work, we proposed to combine the horizontally and vertically striped experiments to constrain the violating parameters. Here, we further point out adopting the vertically striped structure with the experimental setup placed at two azimuth angles, which has more experimental operability. For the experiment, we have completed the assembly and measurement of the torsion pendulum.
In supersymmetric scenarios with broken R-parity, baryon number violating sparticle decays are possible. We report on the development of a framework allowing detailed studies with special attention given to the hadronization phase. In our model, implemented in the Pythia event generator, the baryon number violating vertex is associated with the appearance of a junction in the colour confinement field. This allows us to tell where to look for the extra (anti)baryon directly associated with the baryon number violating decay.
New limits for the Violation of Equivalence Principle (VEP) are obtained considering the mass-flavor mixing hypothesis. This analysis includes observations of solar and reactor neutrinos and has obtained a limit for the VEP parameter $|Δγ|$ contributing to the $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ disappearance channels of the order $|Δγ|<10^{-14}$, when it is assumed that neutrinos are mainly affected by the gravitational potential $φ\approx 10^{-5}$ due to the Great Attractor.
We discuss a possibility that baryon number $B$ is spontaneously broken at low scales, of the order of MeV or even smaller, so that the neutron-antineutron oscillation can be induced at the experimentally accessible level. An associated Goldstone particle, baryonic majoron, can have observable effects in neutron to antineutron transitions in nuclei or dense nuclear matter. By extending baryon number to $B-L$ symmetry, baryo-majoron can be identified with the ordinary majoron associated with the spontaneous breaking of lepton number, with interesting implications for neutrinoless $2β$ becay wit…
We propose a new scenario of baryon number violation in models with extra dimensions. In the true vacuum, baryon number is almost conserved due to the localization mechanism of matter fields, which suppresses the interactions between quarks and leptons. We consider several types of cosmological defects in four-dimensional spacetime that shift the center of the localized matter fields, and show that the magnitudes of the baryon number violating interactions are well enhanced. Application to baryogenesis is also discussed.
We construct simple renormalizable extensions of the standard model where the leading baryon number violating processes have $ΔB = \pm ΔL = -2$. These models contain additional scalars. The simplest models contain a color singlet and a colored sextet. For such baryon number violation to be observed in experiments, the scalars cannot be much heavier than a few TeV. We find that such models are strongly constrained by LHC physics, LEP physics, and flavor physics.
Supersymmetric theories with significant lepton flavor violation have $\tilde{e}$ and $\tildeμ$ nearly degenerate. In this case, pair production of $\tilde{e}^+ \tilde{e}^-$ and $\tildeμ^+ \tildeμ^-$ at LEPII and at the Next Linear Collider leads to the phenomenon of slepton oscillations, which is analogous to neutrino oscillations. The reach in $Δm^2$ and $\sin^2 2 θ$ gives a probe of lepton flavor violation which is significantly more powerful than the current bounds from rare processes, such as $μ\to eγ$. Polarizable $e^-$ beams and the $e^-e^-$ mode at the NLC are found to be promising opt…
Strictly solvable $d=4$ quantum field theory models with unitarity violation. Possible implications for baryon asymmetry of the Universe and dark matter
Institute for Nuclear Research RAS(俄罗斯科学院核物理研究所);JINR Dubna(杜布纳联合核研究所)
The detection of neutron-antineutron oscillation will be a discovery of fundamental importance in particle physics and cosmology. In models discussed widely in literature, the process is generated through heavy New Physics with weak, perturbative, coupling at the scale of the experiment. Acknowledging the fact that Nature has been quite evasive regarding the strength and scale of New Physics, we discuss a new mechanism, generated by confining New Physics, at $\sim 2$ GeV, resulting in low-energy baryon number violating effects. The mechanism predicts baryon number violating processes like neut…
In supersymmetric scenarios with broken R-parity, baryon number violating sparticle decays become possible. In order to search for such decays, a good understanding of expected event properties is essential. We here develop a complete framework that allows detailed studies. Special attention is given to the hadronization phase, wherein the baryon number violating vertex is associated with the appearance of a junction in the colour confinement field. This allows us to tell where to look for the extra (anti)baryon directly associated with the baryon number violating decay.
We investigate possibilities for dynamical P-parity violation in dense baryon matter in the framework of effective quark models. Dynamical P-parity violation can appear in models with at least two scalar and two pseudoscalar fields, where both scalar fields are condensed at normal conditions. At special configurations of coupling constants, one of pseudoscalar fields can then also condense at some value of baryon density, the phenomenon results in mixing of the scalar and pseudoscalar physical degrees of freedom, hence, giving rise to P-parity violation. We discuss the implications and possibl…
Supersymmetric models with bilinear R-parity violation (BRPV) can account for the observed neutrino masses and mixing parameters indicated by neutrino oscillation data. We consider minimal supergravity versions of BRPV where the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is a neutralino. This is unstable, with a large enough decay length to be detected at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We analyse the LHC potential to determine the LSP properties, such as mass, lifetime and branching ratios, and discuss their relation to neutrino properties.
A significant asymmetry in baryon/antibaryon yields in the central region of high energy collisions is observed when the initial state has non-zero baryon charge. This asymmetry is connected with the possibility of baryon charge diffusion in rapidity space. Such a diffusion should decrease the baryon charge in the fragmentation region and translate into the corresponding decrease of the multiplicity of leading baryons. As a result, a new mechanism for Feynman scaling violation in the fragmentation region is obtained. Another numerically more significant reason for the Feynman scaling violation…
We consider the time-dependent analysis of rare $B_d$ and $B_s$ decays mediated by $b\to s ν\bar ν$ transitions. The inclusion of time evolution allows us to construct novel observables with specific sensitivity to CP-odd phases in these processes. The sensitivity to CP violation of corresponding time-integrated measurements in presence of flavor-tagging is also explored. We provide precise predictions for these observables in the SM and explore their sensitivity to new CP-violating NP contributions at present and planned future $B$-physics experiments. As such, these observables provide uniqu…
