We construct simple renormalizable extensions of the standard model where the leading baryon number violating processes have $ΔB = \pm ΔL = -2$. These models contain additional scalars. The simplest models contain a color singlet and a colored sextet. For such baryon number violation to be observed in experiments, the scalars cannot be much heavier than a few TeV. We find that such models are strongly constrained by LHC physics, LEP physics, and flavor physics.
Models where the baryon (B) and lepton (L) numbers are local gauge symmetries that are spontaneously broken at a low scale are revisited. We find new extensions of the Standard Model which predict the existence of fermions that carry both baryon and lepton numbers (i.e., leptoquarks). The local baryonic and leptonic symmetries can be broken at a scale close to the electroweak scale and we do not need to postulate the existence of a large desert to satisfy the experimental constraints on baryon number violating processes like proton decay.
Electroweak baryon number violation may play a crucial role for the creation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the early universe. In this talk, we review the basic mechanism, which relies on the behavior of chiral fermions in nontrivial Yang-Mills gauge field backgrounds.
One or more scalar leptoquarks with masses around a few TeV may provide a solution to some of the flavor anomalies that have been observed. We discuss the impact of such new degrees on baryon number violation when the theory is embedded in a Pati-Salam model. The Pati-Salam embedding can suppress renormalizable and dimension-five baryon number violation in some cases. Our work extends the results of Assad, Grinstein, and Fornal who considered the same issue for vector leptoquarks.
We extend the notion of Minimal Flavor Violation to the lepton sector. We introduce a symmetry principle which allows us to express lepton flavor violation in the charged lepton sector in terms of neutrino masses and mixing angles. We explore the dependence of the rates for flavor changing radiative charged lepton decays (ell(i) -> ell(j) + gamma) and mu-to-e conversion in nuclei on the scales for total lepton number violation, lepton flavor violation and the neutrino masses and mixing angles. Measurable rates are obtained when the scale for total lepton number violation is much larger than th…
We examine the constraints on the MNS lepton mixing matrix from the present and future experimental data of the neutrino oscillation and lepton number violation processes. We introduce a graphical representation of the CP violation phases which appear in the lepton number violation processes such as neutrinoless double beta decay, the $μ^--e^+$ conversion, and the K decay, $K^-\toπ^+μ^-μ^-.$ Using this graphical representation, we derive the constraints on the CP violation phases in the lepton sector.
In this article, we discuss the mechanism for generating the lepton/baryon number and its subsequent conservation based on extradimensional evolution. The internal angular momentum of extra space is related to the lepton/baryon charge. Extra space metric are assumed to be initially asymmetric. Symmetries appear during inflation due to an increase in entropy. Using the multidimensional field toy model, we show that internal angular momentum can accumulate in fermions, which could explain the lepton/baryon asymmetry of the Universe.
Models of minimal lepton flavor violation where the seesaw scale is higher than the relevant flavor scale predict that all lepton flavor violation is proportional to the charged lepton Yukawa matrix. If extra vector-like leptons are within the reach of the LHC, it will be possible to test the resulting predictions in ATLAS/CMS.
The Minimal Lepton Flavour Violation (MLFV) framework is discussed after the recent indication for CP violation in the leptonic sector. Among the three distinct versions of MLFV, the one with degenerate right-handed neutrinos will be disfavoured, if this indication is confirmed. The predictions for leptonic radiative rare decays and muon conversion in nuclei are analysed, identifying strategies to disentangle the different MLFV scenarios. The claim that the present anomalies in the semi-leptonic $B$-meson decays can be explained within the MLFV context is critically re-examined concluding that…
We show that in supersymmetric models with explicit flavor lepton number violation due to soft supersymmetry breaking terms there must be flavor lepton number violation in slepton decays. We propose to look for flavor lepton number violation in righthanded selectron and smuon decays. For selectron and smuon lighter than 80 Gev flavor lepton number violation in slepton decays could be discovered at LEP2 provided the mixing betwen selectron and smuon is not small. We also estimate NLC discovery potential of the lepton flavor number violation in slepton decays.
We discuss the impact of fermion mass matrices on some lepton number violating processes, namely baryogenesis via leptogenesis and neutrinoless double beta decay, and on some lepton flavor violating processes, namely radiative lepton decays in supersymmetric seesaw models.
The possible discovery of proton decay, neutron-antineutron oscillation, neutrinoless beta decay in low energy experiments, and exotic signals related to the violation of the baryon and lepton numbers at collider experiments will change our understanding of the conservation of fundamental symmetries in nature. In this review we discuss the rare processes due to the existence of baryon and lepton number violating interactions. The simplest grand unified theories and the neutrino mass generation mechanisms are discussed. The theories where the baryon and lepton numbers are defined as local gauge…
The sources of lepton flavour and lepton number violation in the left-right symmetric models are reviewed and the most sensitive processes to these violations are discussed. Both the non-SUSY and SUSY versions of the theories are considered. Present and future experimental constraints at low as well as at high energies are discussed. Some emphasis has been put on the doubly charged particle production at future colliders.
Within the framework of a $Z'$ model with non-universal leptonic couplings, we analyze possible signatures of leptonic number violation effects at LHC. Results are described for leptonic energy distributions, both from its specific signature and events number, that could allow us to observe this class of models, under reasonable conditions at LHC.
We show that in supersymmetric models with explicit flavor lepton number violation due to soft supersymmetry breaking mass terms there could be detectable flavor lepton number violation in slepton decays. We estimate LHC discovery potential of the lepton flavor number violation in slepton decays.
Leptonic CP violation is yet to be confirmed as an additional source of CP violation in fundamental interactions. We study the case where leptonic CP violation is spontaneous and is induced by the mixing with a heavy charged vector-like lepton (VLL). We show that the non-decoupling of this VLL is linked with the presence of CP violation and its coupling with the SM leptons are partly fixed from the SM Yukawas. Due to the large leptonic mixing angles, these couplings are typically of the same order and there is no flavor preference. Strong but not definitive constraints come from charged lepton…
We construct the general pion-nucleon SU(2) Lagrangian including both virtual photons and leptons for relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory up to fourth order. We include the light leptons as explicit dynamical degrees of freedom by introducing new building blocks which represent these leptons.
In a generic supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, there will be lepton flavor violation at a neutral gaugino vertex due to misalignment between the lepton Yukawa couplings and the slepton soft masses. Sleptons produced at the LHC through the cascade decays of squarks and gluinos can give a sizable number of events with 4 leptons. This channel could give a clean signature of supersymmetric lepton flavor violation under conditions which are identified.
We complement the results for the radiative corrections to the s2.l angular correlation of baryon semileptonic decays of Ref. [1] with the final results in the rest frame of the decaying baryon.
The observation of lepton flavor violation indicates new physics beyond the Standard Model. Lepton colliders are ideal facilities to probe charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) signals induced by new physics at high energy. In this work we perform a comprehensive study of the sensitivity of future lepton colliders to charged lepton flavor violation. We consider the most general renormalizable Lagrangian coupling two leptons to new bosonic particles, involving both $ΔL=0$ and $ΔL=2$ interactions. The CLFV processes are introduced by the exchange of off-shell new particles at tree-level. We fin…
Heavy singlet neutrinos admit Majorana masses which are not possible for the Standard Model particles. This suggest new possibilities for generating the masses and mixing angles of light neutrinos. We present a model of neutrino physics which combines the source of lepton number violation with the flavor symmetry responsible for the hierarchy in the charged lepton and quark sector. This is accomplished by giving the scalar field effecting the lepton number violation a nonzero charge under the horizontal flavor symmetry. We find an economical model which is consistent with the measured values o…
Lepton flavor violation at linear collider experiments is discussed. We show that detectable lepton flavor violation could occur through scalar lepton pair production and decay in the supersymmetric SU(5) grand unified theory in spite of the stringent present experimental constraints by rare process searches. Possible cross sections about 40fb for an e+e- collider and 280fb for an e-e- collider are illustrated.
We present and discuss constraints on supersymmetric type I seesaw models imposed by neutrino data, charged lepton flavor violation and thermal leptogenesis.
We give a pedagogical review of flavour and CP violation in the lepton sector, with a particular emphasis on new physics - and in particular supersymmetric - contributions to flavour and CP violating observables involving leptons.
The study for lepton flavor violation combined with the neutrino oscillation may provide more information about the lepton flavor structure of the grand unified theory. In this paper, we study two lepton flavor violation processes, $τ\to μγ$ and $Z\to τμ$, in the context of supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified models. We find the two processes are both of phenomenological interest. In particular the latter may be important in some supersymmetric parameter space where the former is suppressed. Thus, Z-dacay may offer another chance for looking for lepton flavor violation.
In $E_6$ models there are new particles whose baryon number is not uniquely assigned. We point out that the baryon and lepton number assignment to these particles can change the baryogenesis scenario significantly. We consider left-right symmetric extension of the standard model in which $(B-L)$ quantum number is gauged. The identification of $(B-L)$ with a generator of $E_6$ is used to define the baryon and lepton numbers for the exotic particles in a way that the electroweak baryon and lepton number anomaly corresponding to the $SU(2)_L$ group vanishes, {\it i.e.}, there is no non-perturbati…
In the framework of models with R-parity violation, scalar neutrinos and scalar leptons production in the processes $l_i^+l_j^-\to\tilde ν_{k,L} Z^0$ and $l^+_il^-_j\to \tilde{l}^{\mp}_{k,L}W^{\pm}$ is considered. We also consider within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model Higgs bosons production in the processes $μ^+μ^-\toH_i^0Z^0$, $μ^+μ^-\to H^{\pm}W^{\mp}$.
We explore the possibility of detecting lepton flavour violation, now a well established experimental fact, at the International Linear Collider. Using a model independent approach we conclude that, given all experimental constraints available, there is still room to detect lepton flavour violation at the ILC.
In this paper we study lepton flavor violating semileptonic decays of heavy baryons in a framework of a model with large extra dimensions and a single generation . Resulting branching ratios for these decays mediated by Kaluza-Klein modes of photon and Z-boson are presented in a model-independent form.
We consider all possible scalar bilinears, which couple to two fermions of the standard model. The various baryon and lepton number violating couplings allowed by these exotic scalars are studied. We then discuss which ones are constrained by limits on proton decay (to a lepton and a meson as well as to three leptons), neutron-antineutron oscillations, and neutrinoless double beta decay.
We discuss leptonic mixing and CP violation at low and high energies, emphasizing possible connections between leptogenesis and CP violation at low energies, in the context of lepton flavour models. Furthermore we analyse weak basis invariants relevant for leptogenesis and for CP violation at low energies. These invariants have the advantage of providing a simple test of the CP properties of any lepton flavour model.
In an $SU(2)_R$ extension of the standard model, it is shown how the neutral fermion $N$ in the doublet $(N,e)_R$ may be assigned baryon number $B=1$, in contrast to its $SU(2)_L$ counterpart $ν$ in the doublet $(ν,e)_L$ which has lepton number $L=1$. This baryon-lepton duplicity allows a scalar $σ$ which couples to $N_L N_L$ to be long-lived dark matter.
Due to the smallness of the lepton Yukawa couplings, higher-dimensional operators can give a significant contribution to the lepton masses. In this case, the lepton mass matrix and the matrix of lepton-Higgs couplings are misaligned leading to lepton flavor violation (LFV) mediated by the Standard Model Higgs boson. We derive model-independent bounds on the Higgs flavor violating couplings and quantify LFV in decays of leptons and electric dipole moments for a class of lepton-Higgs operators contributing to lepton masses. We find significant Higgs-mediated LFV effects at both 1-loop and 2-loop…
I review the role played by baryon and lepton numbers and their discrete subgroups in determining the low energy effective theory relevant for TeV physics.
We present the explicit form of the expressions of the 'Lambda' baryon polarizations in (Lambda_b -> Lambda l^+ l^-) decay for the massive lepton case as a complementary to our previous work prep: hep--ph/0211447.
I discuss theoretical and phenomenological aspects of flavour violation in charged lepton transitions. This includes minimal extensions of the Standard Model within effective-theory approaches, as well as an incomplete selection of concrete new physics models.
If observed, charged lepton flavour violation is a clear sign of new physics - beyond the Standard Model minimally extended to accommodate neutrino oscillation data. We briefly review several extensions of the Standard Model which could potentially give rise to observable signals, also emphasising the rôle of charged lepton flavour violation in probing such new physics models.
Several topics on CP violation in the lepton sector are reviewed. A few theoretical aspects concerning neutrino masses, leptonic mixing, and CP violation will be covered, with special emphasis on seesaw models. A discussion is provided on observable effects which are manifest in the presence of CP violation, particularly, in neutrino oscillations and neutrinoless double beta decay processes, and their possible implications in collider experiments such as the LHC. The role that leptonic CP violation may have played in the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe through the mechanism …
The observation of charged lepton flavor violation is a clear sign of physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). In this work, we investigate the sensitivity of future lepton colliders to charged lepton flavor violation via on-shell production of bileptons, and compare their sensitivity with current constraints and future sensitivities of low-energy experiments. Bileptons couple to two charged leptons with possibly different flavors and are obtained by expanding the general SM gauge invariant Lagrangians with or without lepton number conservation. We find that future lepton colliders will provide…
We discuss charged lepton flavor violation in supersymmetric models with extended leptonic sectors at low energies. Contrary to the usual high-scale realizations of the seesaw mechanism, these non-minimal supersymmetric models have new superfields and/or interactions at the supersymmetric scale. As a consequence of this, the resulting lepton flavor violating phenomenology may be very different from that of minimal models.
In supersymmetric models new sources of lepton flavour violation (LFV) may enhance the rates of charged lepton flavour violating processes, like mu to e gamma, and generate distinct final states at future colliders, e.g. tau mu + jets + missing energy. We discuss the role of chargino pair production for the LFV signals at e+e- colliders.
We briefly review flavour violation in the lepton sector: starting from neutrino oscillations and their implications, we consider several charged lepton flavour violating observables at high and low energies. We present new physics models and discuss the rôle of the latter in disentangling them. In particular, we show how the interplay of different observables allows to derive important information on the underlying mechanism of lepton flavour violation. As an example, we discuss the impact of a type-I SUSY seesaw concerning lepton flavour violation at low energies and at colliders (LHC and a …
The current status of our knowledge of the 3-neutrino mixing parameters and of the CP violation in the lepton sector is summarised. The discrete symmetry approach to understanding the observed pattern of neutrino mixing and the related predictions for neutrino mixing angles and leptonic Dirac CP violation are reviewed.
Neutrinoless double beta decay, lepton number violating collider processes and the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) are intimately related. In particular lepton number violating processes at low energies in combination with sphaleron transitions will typically erase any pre-existing baryon asymmetry of the Universe. In this contribution we briefly review the tight connection between neutrinoless double beta decay, lepton number violating processes at the LHC and constraints from successful baryogenesis. We argue that far-reaching conclusions can be drawn unless the baryon asymmetry is st…
We investigate Lepton Flavor Violation (LFV) in the general extension of the Standard Model parametrized by the gauge invariant operators of dimension-6. We discuss 3-body charged lepton decays and decay of $Z$ boson to lepton pair and compare the obtained analytical expression with the current experimental results. We derive the numerical bounds on the size of the Wilson coefficients parameterizing the allowed size of New Physics effects.
We investigate simplified models involving an inert scalar triplet and vector-like leptons that can account for the muon $g-2$ anomaly. These simplified scenarios are embedded in a model that features W' and Z' bosons, which are subject to stringent collider bounds. The constraints coming from the muon $g-2$ anomaly are put into perspective with collider bounds, as well as bounds coming from lepton flavor violation searches. The region of parameter space that explains the $g-2$ anomaly is shown to be within reach of lepton flavor violation probes and future colliders such as HL-LHC and HE-LHC.
We analyze lepton flavour violation (LFV) and the generation of the observed baryon-antibaryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) within a generalized minimal lepton flavour violation framework with three quasi-degenerate heavy Majorana neutrinos. The BAU which is obtained through radiative resonant leptogenesis can successfully be generated widely independent of the Majorana scale in this scenario and flavour effects are found to be relevant. Then we discuss the specific case in which CP violation is exclusively present at low-energies (a real R matrix) in the flavour sensitive temperature regim…
We examine single chargino production in conjunction with R-parity lepton number violation in future lepton-lepton collisions. Present bounds on R-parity violating couplings allow for a production cross section of the order of ${\cal{O}} (10 {fb})$ for a wide range of sneutrino and chargino masses. Scenarios of chargino decay which lead to purely leptonic signals in the final state and without missing energy are also discussed.
If observed, charged lepton flavour violation is a clear sign of new physics - beyond the Standard Model minimally extended to accommodate neutrino oscillation data. After a brief review of several charged lepton flavour violation observables and their current experimental status, we consider distinct extensions of the Standard Model which could potentially give rise to observable signals, focusing on the case of models in which the mechanism of neutrino mass generation is the common source of neutral and charged lepton flavour violation.
This note is a concise theoretical summary of the first session on new physics searches at the high-intensity frontier of the IFAE2017 Conference. Recent theoretical developments related to muonic lepton-flavour violation and $g-2$ are reviewed.
Recent results from Super Kamiokande suggest $ν_μ-ν_τ$ mixing and hence lepton flavor violation. In supersymmetric models, this flavor violation may have implications for the pattern of slepton masses and mixings. Possible signals for this mixing in the decays of sleptons produced at the LHC are discussed. The sensitivity expected is compared to that of rare decays such as $τ\to μγ$.
Lepton flavor and CP violation in supersymmetric models are briefly reviewed. After a short motivation and an introduction to the phenomenology, model independent constraints on mass insertions, predictions of SUSY GUT models and rates for several LFV and CPV processes are presented.
