Three-body forces acting on a $Λ$ hyperon in a nuclear medium are investigated, with special focus on the so-called hyperon puzzle in neutron stars. The hyperon-nucleon two-body interaction deduced from SU(3) chiral effective field theory is employed at next-to-leading order. Hyperon-nucleon three-body forces are approximated using saturation by decuplet baryons and are transcribed to density-dependent effective two-body interactions. These together are taken as input in a Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone equation with explicit treatment of the $ΛN\leftrightarrowΣN$ and $ΛNN\leftrightarrowΣNN$ coupled channels. Single-particle potentials of a $Λ$ hyperon in symmetric nuclear matter and neutron matter are calculated. With parameters of the $ΛNN$ three-body force constrained by hypernuclear phenomenology, extrapolations to high baryon density are performed. By comparison of the $Λ$ and neutron chemical potentials at densities characteristic of the core of neutron stars it is found that the combined repulsive effects of two- and three-body correlations makes the appearance of $Λ$ hyperons in neutron stars energetically unfavourable, thus offering a possible solution to a longstanding question.
We evaluate strangeness produced in Au--Au interactions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV, as function of reaction participant number $A$, and obtain the relative strange quark content at hadronization. Strange baryon and antibaryon rapidity density yields are studied, relative to, and as function of, participant number, and produced hadron yields.
Within the microscopic transport, systematic investigation of the many facets of hyperons and hypernuclei up to strangeness $S = -2$ are carried out for $^{197}$Au + $^{197}$Au and $^{40}$Ca + $^{40}$Ca at the incident energy of $3A$ GeV. The spatial, temporal and density distributions of hyperon production, absorption and freeze-out are thoroughly investigated. The rapidity and kinetic energy spectra of $Ξ$ hyperons and double $Λ$ hypernuclei are analyzed. It is revealed that the chemical balance of hyperon production is established in baryon-baryon channels while the opposite is found in bar…
We discuss in detail the formation and propagation of multi-strangeness particles in reactions induced by hadron beams relevant for the forthcoming experiments at FAIR. We focus the discussion on the production of the decuplet-particle $Ω$ and study for the first time the production and propagation mechanism of this heavy hyperon inside hadronic environments. The transport calculations show the possibility of $Ω$-production in the forthcoming \panda-experiment, which can be achieved with measurable probabilities using high-energy secondary $Ξ$-beams. We predict cross sections for $Ω$-productio…
Properties of hypernuclei $_{ΛΛ}^5$H and $_{ΛΛ}^5$He are studied in a two-channel approach with explicit treatment of coupling of channels ^3\text{Z}+Λ+Λand α+Ξ. Diagonal ΛΛand coupling ΛΛ-ΞN interactions are derived within G-matrix procedure from Nijmegen meson-exchange models. Bond energy ΔB_{ΛΛ} in $_{ΛΛ}^5$He exceeds significantly that in $_{ΛΛ}^5$H due to the channel coupling. Diagonal Ξαattraction amplifies the effect, which is sensitive also to Λ-core interaction. The difference of the ΔB_{ΛΛ} values can be an unambiguous signature of the ΛΛ-ΞN coupling in ΛΛhypernuclei. However, improv…
Weak SU(3) symmetry is successfully applied to the weak hadronic decay amplitudes of octet hyperons. Weak nonmesonic and mesonic decays of various dibaryons with strangeness, their dominant decay modes, and lifetimes are calculated. Production estimates for BNL's Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider are presented employing wave function coalescence. Signals for detecting strange dibaryon states in heavy-ion collisions and revealing information about the unknown hyperon-hyperon interactions are outlined.
A brief survey is presented of our present understanding of the equation-of-state of cold, dense matter and the speed of sound in the interior of neutron stars, based on the constraints inferred from observational data. The second part focuses on strangeness in baryonic matter and the role of hyperon-nuclear two- and three-body forces, with reference to the "hyperon puzzle" in neutron stars and possible scenarios for its solution.
The joint effect of the density dependence of the symmetry energy and strangeness content on the structure of cold neutron stars is studied within the framework of a relativistic mean field theory. It is shown that 2$M_\odot$ are obtained for repulsive $YY$ interaction and preferably for a small or a large slope $L$. An attractive $Σ$ potential in nuclear matter will favor the appearance of strangeness in stars with a mass as small as $\sim 1 M_\odot$, if, however it is repulsive only stars with a mass $\gtrsim 1.4 M_\odot$ will contain strangeness. The joint effect of reducing the symmetry en…
Formation mechanism of hyperfragments with strangeness s=-1 and s=-2 in collisions of antikaons on nuclei has been investigated within a microscopic transport model. Dynamics of pseudoscalar mesons and hyperons is modeled within the transport model, in which all possible reaction channels for creating hyperons such as the elastic scattering, resonance production and decay, strangeness exchange reaction and direct strangeness production in meson-baryon and baryon-baryon collisions have been included. A coalescence approach is developed for constructing hyperfragments in phase space and the deca…
We study the thermodynamical properties of compressed baryonic matter with strangeness within non-relativistic energy density functional models with a particular emphasis on possible phase transitions found earlier for a simple $n,p,e,Λ$-mixture. The aim of the paper is twofold: I) examining the phase structure of the complete system, including the full baryonic octet and II) testing the sensitivity of the results to the model parameters. We find that, associated to the onset of the different hyperonic families, up to three separate strangeness-driven phase transitions may occur. Consequently,…
The phase diagram of nuclear matter is extended to strangeness and antimatter. It offers fascinating features for heavy ion physics and astrophysics. We will discuss some regions of this phase diagram as strange matter at zero temperature, hypermatter at high densities and the antiworld at high densities and strangeness fraction.
Strange particles and hyperfragments in collisions of antiprotons and protons on nuclei have been investigated systematically within a microscopic transport model. The hyperons are produced from the annihilation in antibaryon-baryon collisions and strangeness exchange process in antiproton induced reactions. A coalescence approach is used for constructing the primary hyperfragments in phase space and the statistical model is modified for describing the decay of hyperfragments via evaporating hyperon, neutron, charged particles etc, in which the shell effect, binding energy and root-mean-square…
We use the Isospin Quantum Molecular Dynamics approach supplemented with a phase space coalescence to study the properties of the production of hypertritons. We see strong influences of the hyperon rescattering on the yields. The hypertritons show up to be quite aligned to the properties of nuclear matter underlining the necessity of rescattering to transport the hyperons to the spectator matter.
A crucial input for recent meson hyperon cloud model estimates of the nucleon matrix element of the strangeness current are the nucleon-hyperon-K* (NYK*) form factors which regularize some of the arising loops. Prompted by new and forthcoming information on these form factors from hyperon-nucleon potential models, we analyze the dependence of the loop model results for the strange-quark observables on the NYK* form factors and couplings. We find, in particular, that the now generally favored soft N-Lambda-K* form factors can reduce the magnitude of the K* contributions in such models by more t…
The interaction between hyperons and nucleons has a wide range of applications in strangeness nuclear physics and is a topic of continuing great interest. These interactions are not only important for hyperon-nucleon scattering but also essential as basic input to studies of hyperon-nuclear few- and many-body systems including hypernuclei and neutron star matter. We review the systematic derivation and construction of such baryonic forces from the symmetries of quantum chromodynamics within non-relativistic SU(3) chiral effective field theory. Several applications of the resulting potentials a…
Recent developments of chiral effective field theory (ChEFT) applications to nuclear and neutron matter are summarized, with special emphasis on a (non-perturbative) extension using functional renormalisation group methods. Topics include: nuclear thermodynamics, extrapolations to dense baryonic matter and constraints from neutron star observables. Hyperon-nuclear interactions derived from SU(3) will be discussed with reference to the "hyperon puzzle" in neutron star matter.
The transverse momentum distributions for hadrons in 200GeV Au-Au collision at RHIC is calculated using a smoothed particle hydrodynamics code SPheRIO, and are compared with the data from STAR and PHOBOS Collaborations. By employing the equation of state which explicitly incorporate the strangeness conservation and introducing strangeness chemical potential into the code, the transverse spectrums give a reasonable description for the experimental data.
Motivated by the successes of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory in one-baryon systems and in heavy-light systems, we study relevance of relativistic effects in hyperon-nucleon interactions with strangeness $S=-1$. In this exploratory work, we follow the covariant framework developed by Epelbaum and Gegelia to calculate the $YN$ scattering amplitude at leading order. By fitting the five low-energy constants to the experimental data, we find that the cutoff dependence is mitigated, compared with the heavy-baryon approach. Nevertheless, the description of the experimental data remains q…
The effect of the density dependence of the nucleonic equation of state and the hyperon meson couplings on the star properties, including strangeness content, mass and radius, are studied within a relativistic mean field formalism. It is shown that there is still lacking information on the nucleonic equation of state at supra-saturation densities and on the hyperon interactions in nuclear matter that will allow a clear answer to the question whether the mass of the pulsar J1614-2230 could rule out exotic degrees of freedom from the interior of compact stars. We show that some star properties a…
The prediction of neutron stars properties is strictly connected to the employed nuclear interactions. The appearance of hyperons in the inner core of the star is strongly dependent on the details of the underlying hypernuclear force. We summarize our recent quantum Monte Carlo results on the development of realistic two- and three-body hyperon-nucleon interactions based on the available experimental data for light- and medium-heavy hypernuclei.
The microscopic origin of the strangeness enhancements observed in PbPb collisions at the SPS is studied by testing the effects of three mechanisms. First, the junction processes found in the HIJING/BBbar event generator are reviewed showing that they can account for only part of the observed hyperon enhancements. Second, the efficient final state chemical changing processes (e.g. Lambda + K -> Xi + pi) are included by adding the General Cascade Program (GCP) to HIJING/BBbar. While these processes are shown to further enhance multistrange baryon production, HIJING/BBbar+GCP is still unable to …
The neutron star as a supernova remnant is attracting high attention recently due to the gravitation wave detection and precise measurements about its mass and radius. In the inner core region of the neutron star, the strangeness degrees of freedom, such as the hyperons, can be present, which is also named as a hyperonic star. In this work, the neutron star consisting of nucleons and leptons, and the hyperonic star including the hyperons will be reviewed in the framework of the relativistic mean-field (RMF) model. The popular non-linear and density-dependent RMF parametrizations in the market …
We analyze low-energy hyperon-nucleon scattering using an effective field theory in next-to-leading order. By fitting experimental cross sections for laboratory hyperon momenta below 200 MeV/c and using information from the hypertriton we determine twelve contact-interaction coefficients. Based on these we discuss the low-density expansion of hyperon mass shifts in the nuclear medium.
We review the important role played by the chiral SU(3) symmetry in predicting the properties of antikaons and hyperon resonances in cold nuclear matter. Objects of crucial importance are the meson-baryon scattering amplitudes obtained within the chiral coupled-channel effective field theory. The formation of baryon resonances as implied by chiral coupled-channel dynamics is discussed. Results for antikaon and hyperon-resonance spectral functions are presented for isospin symmetric and asymmetric matter.
Observables from parity violation in elastic electron-nucleon scattering and neutral current quasi-elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering are employed as tools to improve the current knowledge on the strangeness content in the nucleon.
Quark-model nucleon-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon interactions by the Kyoto- Niigata group are applied to the hypertriton calculation in a new three-cluster Faddeev formalism using the two-cluster resonating-group method kernels. The most recent model, fss2, gives a reasonable result similar to the Nijmegen soft-core model NSC89, except for an appreciable contributions of higher partial waves.
We report quantum Monte Carlo calculations of single-$Λ$ hypernuclei for $A<50$ based on phenomenological two- and three-body hyperon-nucleon forces. We present results for the $Λ$ separation energy in different hyperon orbits, showing that the accuracy of theoretical predictions exceeds that of currently available experimental data, especially for medium-mass hypernuclei. We show the results of a sensitivity study that indicates the possibility to investigate the nucleon-isospin dependence of the three-body hyperon-nucleon-nucleon force in the medium-mass region of the hypernuclear chart, whe…
Background: The calculation of the hyperon binding energy in hypernuclei is crucial to understanding the interaction between hyperons and nucleons. Purpose: We assess the relative importance of two- and three-body hyperon-nucleon force by studying the effect of the hyperon-nucleon-nucleon interaction in closed shell Λ-hypernuclei from A=5 to 91. Methods: The Λ-binding energy has been calculated using the auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo method for the first time, to study light and heavy hypernuclei within the same model. Results: Our results show that including a three-body component in …
We examine the presence of strangeness-bearing components, hyperons and kaons, in dense neutron star matter. Calculations are performed using relativistic mean field models, in which both the baryon-baryon and kaon-baryon interactions are mediated by meson exchange. Results of kaon condensation are found to be qualitatively similar to previous work with chiral models, if compatibility of the kaon optical potentials is required. The presence of strangeness, be it in the form of hyperons or kaons, implies a reduction in the maximum mass and a relatively large number of protons, sufficient to all…
The cross sections for producing K$^-$ mesons in nucleon-hyperon elementary processes are estimated assuming one-pion exchange and using the experimentally known pion-hyperon cross sections. The results are implemented in a transport model which is applied to calculation of proton-nucleus collisions. In significant difference to earlier estimates for heavy-ion collisions the inclusion of the nucleon-hyperon cross section roughly doubles the K$^-$ production in near-threshold proton-nucleus collisions.
We construct the leading order hyperon-nucleon potential in chiral effective field theory. We show that a good description of the available data is possible and discuss briefly further improvements of this scheme.

The work presents the recent developments in Quantum Monte Carlo calculations for nuclear systems including strange degrees of freedom. The Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo algorithm has been extended to the strange sector by the inclusion of the lightest among the hyperons, the $Λ$ particle. This allows to perform detailed calculations for $Λ$ hypernuclei, providing a microscopic framework for the study of the hyperon-nucleon interaction in connection with the available experimental information. The extension of the method for strange neutron matter, put the basis for the first Diffusion…
Recent developments and pending issues in low-energy strong interaction physics with strangeness are summarized. Chiral SU(3) effective field theory has progressed as the appropriate theoretical framework applied to antikaon- and hyperon-nuclear systems. Topics include antikaon-nucleon interactions and the Lambda(1405), KbarNN systems, recent developments in hyperon-nucleon interactions and strangeness in dense baryonic matter with emphasis on new constraints from neutron star observations.
In these lectures we discuss the investigation of the strange meson production in proton-proton ($pp$) and in proton-nucleus ($pA$) reactions within an effective Lagrangian model. The kaon production proceeds mainly via the excitations of $N^*$(1650), $N^*$(1710), and $N^*$(1720) resonant intermediate nucleonic states, in the collision of two initial state nucleons. Therefore, the strangeness production is expected to provide information about the resonances lying at higher excitation energies. For beam energies very close to the kaon production threshold the hyperon-proton final state interac…
In this paper we present a computation of the rates of strangeness-changing processes and the resultant bulk viscosity in matter at the densities and temperatures typical of neutron star mergers. To deal with the high temperature in this environment we go beyond the Fermi surface approximation in our rate calculations and numerically evaluate the full phase space integral. We include processes where quarks move between baryons via meson exchange: these have generally been omitted in previous analyses but provide the dominant contribution to the rates of strangeness-changing processes and the b…
We have constructed the leading order hyperon-nucleon potential in a chiral Effective Field Theory approach. The chiral potential consists of one-pseudoscalar-meson exchanges and non-derivative four-baryon contact terms. The hyperon-nucleon interactions are derived using SU(3) symmetry, the nucleon-nucleon interaction is not considered explicitly since it can not be described well with a leading order chiral Effective Field Theory. We solve a regularized Lippmann-Schwinger equation and show that a good description of the available hyperon-nucleon scattering data is possible with five free para…
The properties of strangeness neutron star are studied within relativistic mean-field (RMF) model via including a logarithmic interaction as a function of scalar meson field. This logarithmic interaction, named as the $σ$-cut potential, can largely reduce the attractive contributions of scalar meson field at high density without any influence on nuclear structure around normal saturation density. In this work, the TM1 parameter set is chosen as the RMF interaction, while the strengths of logarithmic interaction are constrained by the properties of finite nuclei so that we can obtain a reasonab…
Dense compact objects like neutron stars or black holes have always been one of Gerry Brown's favorite research topics. This is closely related to the effects of strangeness in nuclear physics. Here, we review the chiral Effective Field Theory approach to interactions involving nucleons and hyperons, the possible existence of strange dibaryons, the fate of hyperons in nuclear matter and the present status of three-body forces involving hyperons and nucleons.
We review a recent theoretical determination of the strange quark content of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon. These are compared with a global analysis of current experimental measurements in parity-violating electron scattering.
The ground states of double-charm hyperons form a spin 1/2 isospin 1/2 multiplet analogous to that of nucleons. Their main strong interaction may be inferred directly from the corresponding nucleon-nucleon interaction by multiplication of the interaction components by the appropriate fractional difference between interaction strengths for pairs of light flavor quarks and pairs of triplets, e.g. nucleons, of light flavor quarks. By construction of the interaction between the recently discovered double-charm hyperons by this method from several realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction models it is …
Strange quark contributions to neutrino(antineutrino) scattering are investigated on the nucleon level in the quasi-elastic region. The incident energy range between 500 MeV and 1.0 GeV is used for the scattering. All of the physical observable by the scattering are investigated within available experimental and theoretical results for the strangeness form factors of the nucleon. In specific, a newly combined data of parity violating electron scattering and neutrino scattering is exploited. Feasible quantities to be explored for the strangeness contents are discussed for the application to neu…
This paper summarizes our studies of the hypertriton and describes our findings on the hyperon-nucleon interaction, especially on the role of the $ΛN-ΣN$ coupling and the strengths of the $S$-wave $YN$ interactions. We briefly comment on our ongoing analyses with electromagnetic probes.
The study focuses on exploring the changes in the hyperon-baryon interaction at various nuclear densities. This approach starts by building a vacuum hyperon-nucleon interaction model based on Boson -Exchange maintaining SU(3) flavor symmetry. Bethe-Goldstone equation is then explored to investigate the medium properties over the bare interaction. A detailed investigation of the density dependence revealed clear changes in the low energy parameters with the variation of the medium density shown for different strangeness channels.
Several realistic phenomenological nucleon-nucleon interaction models are employed to investigate the possibility of bound deuteron-like states of such heavy flavor hyperons and nucleons, for which the interaction between the light flavor quark components is expected to be the most significant interaction. The results indicate that deuteron-like bound states are likely to form between nucleons and the $Ξ_c^{'}$ and $Ξ_{cc}$ charm hyperons as well as between $Ξ$ hyperons and double-charm hyperons. Bound states between two $Σ_c$ hyperons are also likely. In the case of beauty hyperons the corres…
Hyperon-nucleon interactions are presented that are derived either in the conventional meson-exchange picture or within leading order chiral effective field theory. The chiral potential consists of one-pseudoscalar-meson exchanges and non-derivative four-baryon contact terms. With regard to meson-exchange hyperon-nucleon models we focus on the new potential of the Juelich group, whose most salient feature is that the contributions in the scalar--isoscalar (σ) and vector--isovector (ρ) exchange channels are constrained by a microscopic model of correlated ππand KKbar exchange.
We study the thermal evolution of neutron stars in the presence of hyperons or kaons in the core. Our results indicate that the nucleon and hyperon direct Urca processes play crucial roles for the cooling of neutron stars. The presence of hyperons drives fast cooling mechanisms in two ways: 1) it allows the hyperon direct Urca prior to the nucleon direct Urca, 2) and it makes the nucleon direct Urca more feasible by reducing the neutron Fermi momentum. We found that the neutron star equation of state (EOS) with hyperons can be consistent with both mass and temperature observations. We also fou…
We investigate the role of two- and three-body $Λ$-nucleon forces by computing the ground state of a few $Λ$-hypernuclei with the Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo algorithm. Calculations have been performed for masses up to A=41, including some open-shell hypernuclei. The results show that the use of a bare hyperon-nucleon force fitted on the available scattering data yields a consistent overestimate of the $Λ$-separation energy $B_Λ$. The inclusion of a hyperon-nucleon-nucleon interaction systematically reduces $B_Λ$, leading to a qualitatively good agreement with experimental data over …
We present an overview of the description of K and eta meson productions in nucleon-nucleon collisions within an effective Lagrangian model where meson production proceeds via excitation, propagation and subsequent decay of intermediate baryonic resonant states. The $K$ meson contains a strange quark ($s$) or antiquark ($\bar s$) while the $η$ meson has hidden strangeness as it contains some component of the $s{\bar s}$ pair. Strange meson production is expected to provide information on the manifestation of quantum chromodynamics in the non-perturbative regime of energies larger than that of …
The calculation of the strangeness content of the nucleon and its experimental verification is a fundamental step in establishing non-perturbative QCD as the correct theory describing the structure of hadrons. It holds a role in QCD analogous to the correct calculation of the Lamb shift in QED. We review the latest developments in the vector and scalar matrix elements of the strange quarks in the proton, where there has recently been considerable progress.
Hyperon-nucleon interactions serve as basic inputs to studies of hypernuclear physics and dense (neutron) stars. Unfortunately, a precise understanding of these important quantities have lagged far behind that of the nucleon-nucleon interaction due to lack of high precision experimental data. Historically, hyperon-nucleon interactions are either formulated in quark models or meson exchange models. In recent years, lattice QCD simulations and chiral effective field theory approaches start to offer new insights from first principles. In the present work, we contrast the state of art lattice QCD …
We discuss the role of strangeness on the internal constitution and structural properties of neutron stars. In particular, we report on recent calculations of hyperon star properties derived from microscopic equations of state for hyperonic matter. Next, we discuss the possibility of having a strange quark matter core in a neutron star, or the possible existence of strange quark matter stars, the so-called strange stars.
We use the meson cloud model, including the kaon and the $K^*$ contributions, to estimate the electric and magnetic strange form factors of the nucleon. We compare our results with the recent measurements of the strange quark contribution to parity-violating asymmetries in the forward G0 electron-proton scattering experiment. We conclude that it is not possible to explain the data using this model.
A recently proposed covariant chiral effective field theory approach is applied to study strangeness $S=-1$ hyperon-nucleon interactions at leading order. 12 low energy constants are introduced by Lorentz invariance, which is different from the heavy baryon approach, where only five appear. The Kadyshevsky equation is employed to iterate the chiral potentials. A quite satisfactory description of the 36 hyperon-nucleon scattering data is obtained with $χ^2\simeq 17$, which is comparable with the next-to-leading order heavy baryon approach. The results hint at a more efficient way to construct t…
We study the interaction of $Λ-$hyperon with proton and neutron inside a nucleus within the framework of relativistic mean field formalism. The single particle energy levels for some of the specific proton and neutron orbits are analyzed with the addition of $Λ-$successively. We found that the interaction of $Λ$ with neutron is more stronger than proton.
