The interaction between hyperons and nucleons has a wide range of applications in strangeness nuclear physics and is a topic of continuing great interest. These interactions are not only important for hyperon-nucleon scattering but also essential as basic input to studies of hyperon-nuclear few- and many-body systems including hypernuclei and neutron star matter. We review the systematic derivation and construction of such baryonic forces from the symmetries of quantum chromodynamics within non-relativistic SU(3) chiral effective field theory. Several applications of the resulting potentials are presented for topics of current interest in strangeness nuclear physics.
We analyze low-energy hyperon-nucleon scattering using an effective field theory in next-to-leading order. By fitting experimental cross sections for laboratory hyperon momenta below 200 MeV/c and using information from the hypertriton we determine twelve contact-interaction coefficients. Based on these we discuss the low-density expansion of hyperon mass shifts in the nuclear medium.
We construct the leading order hyperon-nucleon potential in chiral effective field theory. We show that a good description of the available data is possible and discuss briefly further improvements of this scheme.
Relativistic mean-field theory with $δ$ meson, nonlinear isoscalar self-interactions and isoscalar-isovector cross interaction terms with parametrizations obtained to reproduce Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations for nuclear matter is used to study asymmetric nuclear matter properties in $β$-equilibrium, including hyperon degrees of freedom and (hidden) strange mesons. Influence of cross interaction on composition of hyperon matter and electron chemical potential is examined. Softening of nuclear equation of state by the cross interactions results in lowering of hyperonization, although …
We present our attempts to determine the optical model potential $U_Σ= V_Σ-iW_Σ$ of the $Σ$ hyperon in nuclear matter. We analyze the following sources of information on $U_Σ$: $ΣN$ scattering, $Σ^-$ atoms, and final state interaction of $Σ$ hyperons in the $(π,K^+)$ and $(K^-.π)$ reactions on nuclear targets. We conclude that $V_Σ$ is repulsive inside the nucleus and has a shallow a tractive pocket at the nuclear surface. These features of $V_Σ$ are consistent with the Nijmegen model F of the hyperon-nucleon interaction.
Brueckner theory is used to investigate the properties of hyperons in nuclear matter. The hyperon-nucleon interaction is taken from chiral effective field theory at next-to-leading order with SU(3) symmetric low-energy constants. Furthermore, the underlying nucleon-nucleon interaction is also derived within chiral effective field theory. We present the single-particle potentials of Lambda and Sigma hyperons in symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter computed with the continuous choice for intermediate spectra. The results are in good agreement with the empirical information. In particular, our…
A recently proposed covariant chiral effective field theory approach is applied to study strangeness $S=-1$ hyperon-nucleon interactions at leading order. 12 low energy constants are introduced by Lorentz invariance, which is different from the heavy baryon approach, where only five appear. The Kadyshevsky equation is employed to iterate the chiral potentials. A quite satisfactory description of the 36 hyperon-nucleon scattering data is obtained with $χ^2\simeq 17$, which is comparable with the next-to-leading order heavy baryon approach. The results hint at a more efficient way to construct t…
We generalise the finite range momentum and density dependent Seyler-Blanchard nucleon-nucleon effective interaction to the case of interaction between two baryons. This effective interaction is then used to describe dense hadronic matter relevant to neutron stars in the nonrelativistic Thomas-Fermi approach. We investigate the behaviour of nuclear symmetry energy in dense nuclear and hyperon matter relevant to neutron stars. It is found that the nuclear symmetry energy always increases with density in hyperon matter unlike the situation in nuclear matter. This rising characteristic of the sym…
We have examined the contribution of the filled negative energy sea of hyperons to the energy/particle in nuclear matter at the one and two loop levels. While this has the potential to be significant, we find a strong cancellation between the one and two loop contributions for our chosen parameters so that hyperon effects can be justifiably neglected.
We predict the energy per baryon in nuclear matter with non-zero fraction of $Λ$ hyperons. We include Dirac effects on the nucleons as well as the $Λ$ and describe how the latter is implemented. We use the nucleon-hyperon meson-exchange potentials from the Juelich group, the latest as well as an earlier version. The dependence of the results on the many-body framework and on the nucleon-hyperon interaction model is discussed.
We study the long range part of the $Λ$-hyperon optical potential in nuclei using Quantum Many Body techniques and flavor-SU(3) Chiral Lagrangians as starting point. More precisely, we study the contributions to the $Λ$-hyperon optical potential due to the long-range two-pion exchange, with $Σ$ and $Σ^*$ baryons in the internal baryonic lines and considering Nh and $Δ$h excitations. We also consider the contribution to the spin-orbit potentials that comes out from these terms. Our results support a natural explanation of the smallness of the $Λ$-nuclear spin-orbit interaction and shows the imp…
In this proceeding we summarize results for baryonic contact terms derived within SU(3) chiral effective field theory. The four-baryon contact terms, necessary for the description of the hyperon-nucleon interaction, include SU(3) symmetric and explicit chiral symmetry breaking terms. They also include four-baryon contact terms involving pseudoscalar mesons, which become important for three-body forces. Furthermore we derive the leading order six-baryon contact terms in the non-relativistic limit and study their contribution to the $ΛNN$ three-body contact interaction. These results could play …
We demonstrate the different effect of strange impurities ($Λ$ and $Ξ$) on the static properties of nuclei within the framework of the relativistic mean-field model. Systematic calculations show that the gluelike role of $Λ$ hyperon is universal for all $Λ$-hypernuclei considered. However, $Ξ^-$ hyperon has the gluelike role only for the protons distribution in nuclei, and for the neutrons distribution $Ξ^-$ hyperon plays a repulsive role. On the other hand, $Ξ^0$ hyperon attracts surrounding neutrons and reveals a repulsive force to the protons. Possible explanations of the above observation …
We calculate hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions at next-to-leading order in SU(3) baryon chiral perturbation theory extending earlier work by the Bonn-Juelich group. The constructed potentials in momentum space include all one- and two-meson exchange terms generated by the SU(3) chiral Lagrangian. Effects from intermediate decuplet baryons are considered as well. These chiral baryon-baryon potentials, together with appropriate contact terms, provide a new basis for systematic studies of hyperon-nucleon scattering and light hypernuclei.
Neutron stars provide unique conditions to study cold dense nuclear matter at extreme densities. Due to these extreme conditions additional hadronic degrees of freedom are expected to be populated, including hyperons. This talk will focus on the influence of hyperons on the neutron star equation ofstate. In particular the contribution of the lambda hyperon will be discussed, as a first approximation to describing exotic neutron star equations of state. The system under consideration is where the strong nuclear force is described by the exchange of mesons and applying the relativistic mean field…
The in-medium properties of a hyperon-nucleon potential, derived within chiral effective field theory and fitted to Lambda-N and Sigma-N scattering data, are investigated. Results for the single-particle potentials of the Lambda and Sigma hyperons in nuclear matter are reported, based on a conventional first-order Brueckner calculation. The Sigma-nucleus potential is found to be repulsive, in agreement with phenomenological information. A weak Lambda-nucleus spin-orbit interaction can be achieved by an appropriate adjustment of a low-energy constant corresponding to an antisymmetric Lambda-N -…
We have constructed the leading order hyperon-nucleon potential in a chiral Effective Field Theory approach. The chiral potential consists of one-pseudoscalar-meson exchanges and non-derivative four-baryon contact terms. The hyperon-nucleon interactions are derived using SU(3) symmetry, the nucleon-nucleon interaction is not considered explicitly since it can not be described well with a leading order chiral Effective Field Theory. We solve a regularized Lippmann-Schwinger equation and show that a good description of the available hyperon-nucleon scattering data is possible with five free para…
Based on the chiral kinetic approach using initial conditions from a multiphase transport model, we study the spin polarizations of quarks and antiquarks in non-central heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Because of the non-vanishing vorticity field in these collisions, quarks and antiquarks are found to acquire appreciable spin polarizations in the direction perpendicular to the reaction plane. Converting quarks and antiquarks to hadrons via the coalescence model, we further calculate the spin polarizations of Lambda and anti-Lambda hyperons and find their values comp…
Hyperon-nucleons interactions constructed by two frameworks, the Kyoto-Niigata SU$_6$ quark model and the chiral effective field theory, are compared by investigating equivalent interactions in a low-momentum space and in addition by calculating hyperon single-particle potentials in the lowest-order Brueckner theory in symmetric nuclear matter. Two descriptions are shown to give similar matrix elements in most channels after renormalizing high momentum components. Although the range of the $ΛN$ interaction is different in two potentials, the $Λ$ single-particle potential in nuclear matter is v…
We calculate the magnetic moments of hyperons in dense nuclear matter by using relativistic quark models. Hyperons are treated as MIT bags, and the interactions are considered to be mediated by the exchange of scalar and vector mesons which are approximated as mean fields. Model dependence is investigated by using the quark-meson coupling model and the modified quark-meson coupling model; in the former the bag constant is independent of density and in the latter it depends on density. Both models give us the magnitudes of the magnetic moments increasing with density for most octet baryons. But…
In this article we will review the role and properties of hyperons in finite and infinite nuclear systems. In particular, we will revise different production mechanisms of hypernuclei, as well as several aspects of hypernuclear $γ$-ray spectroscopy, and the weak decay modes of hypernuclei. Then we will discuss the construction of hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions on the basis of the meson-exchange and chiral effective field theories. Recent developments based on the so-called V$_{low\,\, k}$ approach and lattice QCD will also be adressed. Finally, we will go over some of the eff…
We present a novel approach to the density dependent mean field and the spin-orbit interaction of a $Λ$-hyperon in a nuclear many-body system, based on flavor-SU(3) in-medium chiral perturbation theory. The leading long-range $ΛN$-interaction arises from kaon exchange and from two-pion exchange with a $Σ$-hyperon in the intermediate state. The empirical $Λ$-nucleus potential depth of about $-28 $MeV is well reproduced with a single cutoff scale, $\bar Λ= 0.7 $GeV, effectively representing all short-distance (high-momentum) dynamics not resolved at scales characteristic of the nuclear Fermi mom…
Results from an ongoing study of baryon-baryon systems with strangeness S=-1 and -2 within chiral effective field theory are reported. The investigations are based on the scheme proposed by Weinberg which has been applied rather successfully to the nucleon-nucleon interaction in the past. Results for the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions obtained to leading order are reviewed. Specifically, the issue of extrapolating the binding energy of the H-dibaryon, extracted from recent lattice QCD simulations, to the physical point is addressed. Furthermore, first results for the hyperon-…
Using SU(3) chiral perturbation theory we calculate the density-dependent complex mean field $U_Σ(k_f)+ i W_Σ(k_f)$ of a $Σ$-hyperon in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter. The leading long-range $ΣN $-interaction arises from one-kaon exchange and from two-pion exchange with a $Σ$- or a $Λ$-hyperon in the intermediate state. We find from the $ΣN\to ΛN$ conversion process at nuclear matter saturation density $ρ_0 = 0.16 $fm$^{-3}$ an imaginary single-particle potential of $W_Σ(k_{f0}) =-21.5$ MeV, in fair agreement with existing empirical determinations. The genuine long-range contributions from i…
A range of issues in the field of weak and electromagnetic interactions of hyperons is presented from the perspective of (broken) chiral symmetry, together with an assessment of where important challenges remain.
We use two-flavor heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory to investigate the isovector axial charges of the spin one-half hyperons. Expressions for these hyperon axial charges are derived at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. We utilize phenomenological and lattice QCD inputs to assess the convergence of the two-flavor theory, which appears to be best for cascades.
The Jülich-Bonn group aims at an extensive study of the baryon-baryon ($BB$) interaction involving strange baryons ($Λ$, $Σ$, $Ξ$) within SU(3) chiral effective field theory. An overview of achievements and new developments over the past few years is provided. The topics covered are: 1) Derivation of the leading charge-symmetry breaking (CSB) interaction for the $ΛN$ system and its application in a study of CSB effects in $A$=$4$ $Λ$-hypernuclei. 2) Updated results for the $ΞN$ interaction at NLO and predictions for $Ξ^- p$ correlation functions. 3) Extension of the $ΛN$-$ΣN$ interaction to ne…
We extend a chiral effective field theory approach to the $Λ$-nuclei interaction with the inclusion of the decuplet baryons. More precisely, we study the contributions due to the long-range two-pion exchange, with $Σ$ and $Σ^*$ baryons in the internal baryonic lines considering Nh and $Δ$h excitations. In particular, central and spin-orbit potentials are studied. For the former, regularization is needed and physical values of the cut-off give a large attraction, becoming necessary to include the repulsion of other terms not considered here. For the latter, in a model-independent framework, the…
The complete renormalization of the weak Lagrangian to chiral order q^2 in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is performed using heat kernel techniques. The results are compared with divergences appearing in the calculation of Feynman graphs for the nonleptonic hyperon decay Lambda -> p pi^- and an estimate for the size of the counterterm contributions to the s-wave amplitudes in nonleptonic hyperon decays is given.
Adopting hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon-nucleon interactions parametrized in chiral effective field theory, single-particle potentials of the $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperons are evaluated in symmetric nuclear matter and in pure neutron matter within the framework of lowest order Bruckner theory. The chiral NLO interaction bears strong $Λ$N-$Σ$N coupling. Although the $Λ$ potential is repulsive if the coupling is switched off, the $Λ$N-$Σ$N correlation brings about the attraction consistent with empirical data. The $Σ$ potential is repulsive, which is also consistent with empirical information. The i…
The $ΛN$ and $ΣN$ interactions are considered at next-to-leading order in SU(3) chiral effective field theory. Different options for the low-energy constants that determine the strength of the contact interactions are explored. Two variants are analysed in detail which yield equivalent results for $ΛN$ and $ΣN$ scattering observables but differ in the strength of the $ΛN \to ΣN$ transition potential. The influence of this difference on predictions for light hypernuclei and on the properties of the $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperons in nuclear matter is investigated and discussed. The effect of the variation…
The structure of single-$Λ$ hypernuclei is studied using the chiral hyperon-nucleon potentials derived at leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO) by the Jülich--Bonn--Munich group. Results for the separation energies of $Λ$ single-particle states for various hypernuclei from $^5_Λ$He to $^{209}_{\,\,\,\,\,Λ}$Pb are presented for the LO interaction and the 2013 (NLO13) and 2019 (NLO19) versions of the NLO potentials. It is found that the results based on the LO potential show a clear tendency for overbinding while those for the NLO13 interaction underbind most of the considered hyper…
Hyperon non-leptonic weak decay amplitudes are studied in the chiral perturbation theory. The weak interaction vertices caused by the four quark operators are substituted by the products of the hadronic currents and by the phenomenologically introduced weak Hamiltonian of hadron operators. Our study suggests the improvement of the theoretical prediction for the weak decay amplitudes.
Hyperon-nucleon interactions are presented that are derived either in the conventional meson-exchange picture or within leading order chiral effective field theory. The chiral potential consists of one-pseudoscalar-meson exchanges and non-derivative four-baryon contact terms. With regard to meson-exchange hyperon-nucleon models we focus on the new potential of the Juelich group, whose most salient feature is that the contributions in the scalar--isoscalar (σ) and vector--isovector (ρ) exchange channels are constrained by a microscopic model of correlated ππand KKbar exchange.
We study the effect of the nucleon-nucleon-lambda (NN$Λ$) three-body force on neutron stars. In particular, we consider the NN$Λ$ force recently derived by the Jülich--Bonn--Munich group within the framework of chiral effective field theory at next-to-next-to-leading order. This force, together with realistic nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-hyperon interactions, is used to calculate the equation of state and the structure of neutron stars within the many-body non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach. Our results show that the inclusion of the NN$Λ$ force leads to a…
Brueckner theory is used to investigate the in-medium properties of a $Λ$-hyperon in nuclear and neutron matter, based on hyperon-nucleon interactions derived within SU(3) chiral effective field theory (EFT). It is shown that the resulting $Λ$ single-particle potential $U_Λ(p_Λ=0,ρ)$ becomes strongly repulsive for densities $ρ$ of two-to-three times that of normal nuclear matter. Adding a density-dependent effective $ΛN$-interaction constructed from chiral $ΛNN$ three-body forces increases the repulsion further. Consequences of these findings for neutron stars are discussed. It is argued that …
Hyperon non-leptonic weak decay amplitudes are studied in the chiral perturbation theory. We employ the low energy effective weak Hamiltonian which contains the perturbative QCD correction. To include the non-perturbative QCD effect, quark currents of the effective Hamiltonian are substituted with hadronic currents which are color singlet and are derived by the chiral perturbation theory. We find that the amplitudes caused by the product of hadronic currents are small. It reproduce the small amplitudes of $ΔI=3/2$, which are derived by the strong interaction correction.
The structure of neutron stars is determined by the equation of state of the matter inside the star, which relies on the knowledge of nuclear interactions. While radii of neutron stars mostly depend on the equation of state of neutron matter at nuclear densities, their maximum mass can be drastically affected by the appearance of hyperons at higher densities in the inner core of the star. We summarize recent quantum Monte Carlo results on the calculation of the equation of state of neutron matter at nuclear and higher densities. We report about the development of realistic hyperon-nucleon inte…
Within the framework of quantum molecular dynamics transport model, the isospin and in-medium effects on the hyperon production in the reaction of $^{197}$Au + $^{197}$Au are investigated thoroughly. A repulsive hyperon-nucleon potential from the chiral effective field theory is implemented into the model, which is related to the hyperon momentum and baryon density. The correction on threshold energy of the elementary hyperon cross section is taken into account. It is found that the $Σ$ yields are suppressed in the domain of midrapidity and kinetic energy spectra with the potential. The hypero…
The nature of the Lambda(1405) is discussed based on the unitarised coupled-channels approach with chiral dynamics (chiral unitary model). This approach describes the Kbar N scattering cross sections and the Lambda(1405) spectra phenomenologically very well. With this successful description of Lambda(1405), it is found that the Lambda(1405) is composed by two resonance states having different coupling nature to the meson-baryon states. As a consequence, the resonance position in the pi Sigma invariant mass spectrum depends on the initial channel of the Lambda(1405) production. To observe the L…
We argue that the enhancement in the spin polarization of anti-hyperons compared to the polarization of the hyperons in noncentral relativistic heavy-ion collisions arises as a result of an interplay between the chiral and helical vortical effects. The chiral vortical effect generates the axial current of quarks along the vorticity axis while the recently found helical vortical effect generates the helicity flow -- the projection of the quark's polarization vector onto its momentum -- along the same axis. For massless fermions, the helical charge corresponds to a difference in the contribution…
We analyze hyperon and nucleon mass shifts in nuclear matter using chiral perturbation theory. Expressions for the mass shifts that include strong interaction effects at leading order in the density are derived. Corrections to our results are suppressed by powers of the Fermi momentum divided by either the chiral symmetry breaking scale or the nucleon mass. Our work is relevant for neutron stars and for large hypernuclei.
We evaluate the antikaon spectral density in isospin symmetric nuclear matter. The in-medium antikaon-nucleon scattering process and the antikaon propagation is treated in a self consistent and relativistic manner where a maximally scheme-independent formulation is derived by performing a partial density resummation in terms of the free-space antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes. The latter amplitudes are taken from a covariant and chiral coupled-channel SU(3) approach which includes s-, p- and d-waves systematically. Particular care is taken on the proper evaluation of the in-medium mixing …
We apply a recently proposed covariant power counting in nucleon-nucleon interactions to study strangeness $S=-1$ $ΛN-ΣN$ interactions in chiral effective field theory. At leading order, Lorentz invariance introduces 12 low energy constants, in contrast to the heavy baryon approach, where only five appear. The Kadyshevsky equation is adopted to resum the potential in order to account for the non-perturbative nature of hyperon-nucleon interactions. A fit to the $36$ hyperon-nucleon scattering data points yields $χ^2\simeq 16$, which is comparable with the sophisticated phenomenological models a…
We use two-flavor chiral perturbation theory to describe hyperons. We focus on the strangeness conserving sector, and, as an example, calculate hyperon masses. Convergence of this two-flavor chiral expansion for observables is improved over the three-flavor theory. The cost, however, is a larger number of low-energy constants that must be ultimately determined from lattice QCD data. A formula for the mass of the omega baryon is derived to sixth order in this expansion, and will aid lattice practitioners in scale setting or tuning the strange quark mass.
The theoretical status of the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions is reviewed, paying a special attention to chiral effective field theories. Results on hyperons in dense matter are presented and the consequences for the properties of neutron stars are analyzed.
Bulk and single-particle properties of hot hyperonic matter are studied within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation extended to finite temperature. The bare interaction in the nucleon sector is the Argonne V18 potential supplemented with an effective three-body force to reproduce the saturating properties of nuclear matter. The modern Nijmegen NSC97e potential is employed for the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions. The effect of the temperature on the in-medium effective interaction is found to be, in general, very small and the single-particle potentials differ by at most 25…
We evaluate the antikaon and hyperon spectral functions in a self-consistent and covariant many-body approach. The computation is based on coupled-channel dynamics derived from the chiral SU(3) Lagrangian. A novel subtraction scheme is developed that avoids kinematical singularities and medium-induced power divergencies all together. Scalar and vector mean fields are used to model nuclear binding and saturation. The effect of the latter is striking for the antikaon spectral function that becomes significantly more narrow at small momenta. Attractive mass shifts of about 30 and 40 MeV are predi…
The axial vector coupling constants of the $β$ decay processes of neutron and hyperon are calculated in SU(3) chiral colour dielectric model (CCDM). Using these axial coupling constants of neutron and hyperon, in CCDM we calculate the integrals of the spin dependent structure functions for proton and neutron. Our result is similar to the results obtained by MIT bag and Cloudy bag models.
The pion mass dependence of hyperon electromagnetic properties is determined using two-flavor heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Specifically we compute chiral corrections to the charge radii, magnetic moments, and magnetic radii of the spin one-half hyperons, as well as the charge radii, magnetic moments, magnetic radii, electric quadrupole moments, and quadrupole radii of the spin three-half hyperons. Results for the nucleon and delta are also included. Efficacy of the two-flavor theory is investigated by analyzing the role played by virtual kaons. For the electromagnetic properties of…
The purpose of this note is to report predictions of the binding energy of the $Λ$ hyperon in nuclear matter using the latest version of the Juelich nucleon-nucleon meson-exchange potential. Results from a conventional Brueckner calculation are compared with previously reported values. A calculation including Dirac effects on the $Λ$ single-particle potential is also presented. Issues encountered in Dirac calculations with nucleon-hyperon potentials are discussed.
The momentum projected SU(3) Chiral Color Dielectric Model (CCDM) is employed to calculate the charge root mean square radii and charge distributions of hyperons. We compare our result with Skyrme, MIT bag and Cloudy Bag model results. The charge distribution of $Λ$ in CCDM is similar to that of Skyrme Model prediction.
We have developed a formalism for microscopic Brueckner-type calculations of dense nuclear matter that includes all types of baryon-baryon interactions and allows to treat any asymmetry on the fractions of the different species (n, p, $Λ$, $Σ^0$, $Σ^+$, $Σ^-$, $Ξ^-$ and $Ξ^0$). We present results for the different single-particle potentials focussing on situations that can be relevant in future microscopic studies of beta-stable neutron star matter with strangeness. We find the both the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions play a non-negligible role in determining the chemical pote…
Three-body forces acting on a $Λ$ hyperon in a nuclear medium are investigated, with special focus on the so-called hyperon puzzle in neutron stars. The hyperon-nucleon two-body interaction deduced from SU(3) chiral effective field theory is employed at next-to-leading order. Hyperon-nucleon three-body forces are approximated using saturation by decuplet baryons and are transcribed to density-dependent effective two-body interactions. These together are taken as input in a Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone equation with explicit treatment of the $ΛN\leftrightarrowΣN$ and $ΛNN\leftrightarrowΣNN$ couple…
