We use two-flavor chiral perturbation theory to describe hyperons. We focus on the strangeness conserving sector, and, as an example, calculate hyperon masses. Convergence of this two-flavor chiral expansion for observables is improved over the three-flavor theory. The cost, however, is a larger number of low-energy constants that must be ultimately determined from lattice QCD data. A formula for the mass of the omega baryon is derived to sixth order in this expansion, and will aid lattice practitioners in scale setting or tuning the strange quark mass.
The three-flavor chiral expansion for octet baryons has well-known problems with convergence. We show that this three-flavor chiral expansion can be reorganized into a two-flavor expansion thereby eliminating large kaon and eta loop contributions. Issues of the underlying formulation are addressed by considering the effect of strangeness changing thresholds on hyperon masses. While the spin-3/2 hyperon resonances are considerably more sensitive to these thresholds compared to the spin-1/2 hyperons, we demonstrate that in both cases the essential physics can be captured in the two-flavor effect…
Two-flavor chiral expansions provide a useful perturbative framework to study hadron properties. Such expansions should exhibit marked improvement over the conventional three-flavor chiral expansion. Although one can theoretically formulate two-flavor theories for the various hyperon multiplets, the nearness of kaon thresholds can seriously undermine the effectiveness of the perturbative expansion in practice. We investigate the importance of virtual kaon thresholds on hyperon properties, specifically their masses and isovector axial charges. Using a three-flavor expansion that includes SU(3) …
The pion mass dependence of hyperon electromagnetic properties is determined using two-flavor heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Specifically we compute chiral corrections to the charge radii, magnetic moments, and magnetic radii of the spin one-half hyperons, as well as the charge radii, magnetic moments, magnetic radii, electric quadrupole moments, and quadrupole radii of the spin three-half hyperons. Results for the nucleon and delta are also included. Efficacy of the two-flavor theory is investigated by analyzing the role played by virtual kaons. For the electromagnetic properties of…
Two-flavor chiral expansions provide a useful perturbative framework to study hadron properties. Such expansions should exhibit marked improvement over the conventional three-flavor chiral expansion. Although in principle one can formulate two-flavor theories for the various hyperon multiplets, the nearness of kaon thresholds can seriously undermine the effectiveness of such two-flavor theories in practice. We investigate the importance of virtual kaon thresholds on hyperon properties, specifically their isovector axial charges and electromagnetic observables. In particular we uncover the unde…
We use two-flavor heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory to investigate the isovector axial charges of the spin one-half hyperons. Expressions for these hyperon axial charges are derived at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. We utilize phenomenological and lattice QCD inputs to assess the convergence of the two-flavor theory, which appears to be best for cascades.
Hyperon-nucleon interactions serve as basic inputs to studies of hypernuclear physics and dense (neutron) stars. Unfortunately, a precise understanding of these important quantities have lagged far behind that of the nucleon-nucleon interaction due to lack of high precision experimental data. Historically, hyperon-nucleon interactions are either formulated in quark models or meson exchange models. In recent years, lattice QCD simulations and chiral effective field theory approaches start to offer new insights from first principles. In the present work, we contrast the state of art lattice QCD …
Several realistic phenomenological nucleon-nucleon interaction models are employed to investigate the possibility of bound deuteron-like states of such heavy flavor hyperons and nucleons, for which the interaction between the light flavor quark components is expected to be the most significant interaction. The results indicate that deuteron-like bound states are likely to form between nucleons and the $Ξ_c^{'}$ and $Ξ_{cc}$ charm hyperons as well as between $Ξ$ hyperons and double-charm hyperons. Bound states between two $Σ_c$ hyperons are also likely. In the case of beauty hyperons the corres…
A range of issues in the field of weak and electromagnetic interactions of hyperons is presented from the perspective of (broken) chiral symmetry, together with an assessment of where important challenges remain.
The complete renormalization of the weak Lagrangian to chiral order q^2 in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is performed using heat kernel techniques. The results are compared with divergences appearing in the calculation of Feynman graphs for the nonleptonic hyperon decay Lambda -> p pi^- and an estimate for the size of the counterterm contributions to the s-wave amplitudes in nonleptonic hyperon decays is given.
By the analysis of the world data base of elastic electron scattering on the proton and the neutron (for the latter, in fact, on $^2H$ and $^3He$) important experimental insights have recently been gained into the flavor compositions of nucleon electromagnetic form factors. We report on testing the Graz Goldstone-boson-exchange relativistic constituent-quark model in comparison to the flavor contents in low-energy nucleons, as revealed from electron-scattering phenomenology. It is found that a satisfactory agreement is achieved between theory and experiment for momentum transfers up to $Q^2\si…
Hyperon non-leptonic weak decay amplitudes are studied in the chiral perturbation theory. The weak interaction vertices caused by the four quark operators are substituted by the products of the hadronic currents and by the phenomenologically introduced weak Hamiltonian of hadron operators. Our study suggests the improvement of the theoretical prediction for the weak decay amplitudes.
Studies of lepton-flavor violation in strangeness-changing ($|ΔS|=1$) transitions have a~long tradition in the kaon sector where they provide some of the strongest limits on physics beyond the standard model. Recent hints of violation of lepton-flavor universality in $B$-meson decays have revived interest in lepton-flavor violation as the two phenomena appear simultaneously in many extensions of the standard model. At the same time, the LHCb experiment has produced new results for the hyperon process $Σ^+\to pμ^+μ^-$ and may be in a position to study other rare hyperon decay modes. With this i…
Hyperon non-leptonic weak decay amplitudes are studied in the chiral perturbation theory. We employ the low energy effective weak Hamiltonian which contains the perturbative QCD correction. To include the non-perturbative QCD effect, quark currents of the effective Hamiltonian are substituted with hadronic currents which are color singlet and are derived by the chiral perturbation theory. We find that the amplitudes caused by the product of hadronic currents are small. It reproduce the small amplitudes of $ΔI=3/2$, which are derived by the strong interaction correction.
The hyperon vector form factors at zero momentum transfer, $f_1(0)$, play an important role in a precise determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{us}$. Recent studies based on lattice chromodynamics (LQCD) simulations and covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory yield contradicting results. In this work, we study chiral extrapolation of and finite-volume corrections to the latest $n_f=2+1$ LQCD simulations. Our results show that finite-volume corrections are relatively small and can be safely ignored at the present LQCD setup of $m_πL=4.6$ but chiral extrapolation n…
Results for the Lambda N and Sigma N interactions obtained at next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory are reported. At the order considered there are contributions from one- and two-pseudoscalar-meson exchange diagrams and from four-baryon contact terms without and with two derivatives. SU(3) flavor symmetry is imposed for constructing the hyperon-nucleon interaction while the explicit SU(3) symmetry breaking by the physical masses of the pseudoscalar mesons (pi, K, eta) is taken into account. An excellent description of the hyperon-nucleon system can be achieved at next-to-lead…
We systematically study the hadron longitudinal polarizations of the octet baryons at large $z$ from quark fragmentations in $e^+e^-$-annihilation, polarized charged lepton deep inelastic scattering (DIS) process, and neutrino (antineutrino) DIS process, based on predictions of quark distributions for the octet baryons in the SU(6) quark-spectator-diquark model and a perturbative QCD based counting rule analysis. We show that the $e^+e^-$-annihilation and polarized charged lepton DIS process are able to distinguish between the two different predictions of the hyperon polarizations. We also fin…
We argue that the enhancement in the spin polarization of anti-hyperons compared to the polarization of the hyperons in noncentral relativistic heavy-ion collisions arises as a result of an interplay between the chiral and helical vortical effects. The chiral vortical effect generates the axial current of quarks along the vorticity axis while the recently found helical vortical effect generates the helicity flow -- the projection of the quark's polarization vector onto its momentum -- along the same axis. For massless fermions, the helical charge corresponds to a difference in the contribution…
We apply a recently proposed covariant power counting in nucleon-nucleon interactions to study strangeness $S=-1$ $ΛN-ΣN$ interactions in chiral effective field theory. At leading order, Lorentz invariance introduces 12 low energy constants, in contrast to the heavy baryon approach, where only five appear. The Kadyshevsky equation is adopted to resum the potential in order to account for the non-perturbative nature of hyperon-nucleon interactions. A fit to the $36$ hyperon-nucleon scattering data points yields $χ^2\simeq 16$, which is comparable with the sophisticated phenomenological models a…
Within the collective coordinate approach to chiral soliton models we suggest that breaking of SU(3) flavor symmetry mainly resides in the baryon wave-functions while the charge operators maintain a symmetric structure. Sizable symmetry breaking in the wave-functions is required to reproduce the observed spacing in the spectrum of the (1/2)^+ baryons. The matrix elements of the flavor symmetric charge operators nevertheless yield g_A/g_V ratios for hyperon beta-decay which agree with the empirical data approximately as well as the successful F&D parameterization of the Cabibbo scheme. Demandin…
We construct the leading order hyperon-nucleon potential in chiral effective field theory. We show that a good description of the available data is possible and discuss briefly further improvements of this scheme.

Using various kinds of relativistic mean-field models as well as the quark-meson coupling model, we study in detail the properties of neutron stars. We find that the equation of state in SU(3) flavor symmetry can support a neutron star with mass of $(1.8 \sim 2.1) M_{\odot}$ even if hyperons exist inside the core of a neutron star.
SU(3), baryon octets and a meson cloud model are compared for the flavor asymmetry of sea quarks in the $Σ^+$, as an example. Large differences are found, especially between SU(3) and the meson cloud model. We suggest Drell-Yan measurements of $Σ^{+}-p$ and $Σ^{+}- d$ to test the prediction of various models. We use the meson cloud model to predict both valence and sea quark distributions.
Motivated by the successes of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory in one-baryon systems and in heavy-light systems, we study relevance of relativistic effects in hyperon-nucleon interactions with strangeness $S=-1$. In this exploratory work, we follow the covariant framework developed by Epelbaum and Gegelia to calculate the $YN$ scattering amplitude at leading order. By fitting the five low-energy constants to the experimental data, we find that the cutoff dependence is mitigated, compared with the heavy-baryon approach. Nevertheless, the description of the experimental data remains q…
Dense compact objects like neutron stars or black holes have always been one of Gerry Brown's favorite research topics. This is closely related to the effects of strangeness in nuclear physics. Here, we review the chiral Effective Field Theory approach to interactions involving nucleons and hyperons, the possible existence of strange dibaryons, the fate of hyperons in nuclear matter and the present status of three-body forces involving hyperons and nucleons.
We study the |Delta I|=3/2 amplitudes of hyperon non-leptonic decays of the form B->B'+pi in the context of chiral perturbation theory. The lowest-order predictions are determined in terms of only one unknown parameter and are consistent within errors with current data. We investigate the theoretical uncertainty of these predictions by calculating the leading non-analytic corrections. We also present an estimate for the size of the S-wave Lambda and Cascade decays which vanish at leading order. We find that the corrections to the lowest-order predictions are within the expectations of naive po…
We consider the strangeness-changing decays of hyperons into another baryon and missing energy which is carried away by a pair of invisible spinless bosons. Pursuing a model-independent approach and taking into account constraints from the kaon sector, we find that these hyperon modes can have large rates, especially if the bosons have parity-odd effective couplings to light quarks. In that case the rates could attain values which are well within the expected reach of the currently running BESIII experiment. Since the branching fractions of hyperon decays with missing energy are tiny in the st…
Brueckner theory is used to investigate the properties of hyperons in nuclear matter. The hyperon-nucleon interaction is taken from chiral effective field theory at next-to-leading order with SU(3) symmetric low-energy constants. Furthermore, the underlying nucleon-nucleon interaction is also derived within chiral effective field theory. We present the single-particle potentials of Lambda and Sigma hyperons in symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter computed with the continuous choice for intermediate spectra. The results are in good agreement with the empirical information. In particular, our…
A recently proposed covariant chiral effective field theory approach is applied to study strangeness $S=-1$ hyperon-nucleon interactions at leading order. 12 low energy constants are introduced by Lorentz invariance, which is different from the heavy baryon approach, where only five appear. The Kadyshevsky equation is employed to iterate the chiral potentials. A quite satisfactory description of the 36 hyperon-nucleon scattering data is obtained with $χ^2\simeq 17$, which is comparable with the next-to-leading order heavy baryon approach. The results hint at a more efficient way to construct t…
The interaction between hyperons and nucleons has a wide range of applications in strangeness nuclear physics and is a topic of continuing great interest. These interactions are not only important for hyperon-nucleon scattering but also essential as basic input to studies of hyperon-nuclear few- and many-body systems including hypernuclei and neutron star matter. We review the systematic derivation and construction of such baryonic forces from the symmetries of quantum chromodynamics within non-relativistic SU(3) chiral effective field theory. Several applications of the resulting potentials a…
We analyze hyperon and nucleon mass shifts in nuclear matter using chiral perturbation theory. Expressions for the mass shifts that include strong interaction effects at leading order in the density are derived. Corrections to our results are suppressed by powers of the Fermi momentum divided by either the chiral symmetry breaking scale or the nucleon mass. Our work is relevant for neutron stars and for large hypernuclei.
We study the long range part of the $Λ$-hyperon optical potential in nuclei using Quantum Many Body techniques and flavor-SU(3) Chiral Lagrangians as starting point. More precisely, we study the contributions to the $Λ$-hyperon optical potential due to the long-range two-pion exchange, with $Σ$ and $Σ^*$ baryons in the internal baryonic lines and considering Nh and $Δ$h excitations. We also consider the contribution to the spin-orbit potentials that comes out from these terms. Our results support a natural explanation of the smallness of the $Λ$-nuclear spin-orbit interaction and shows the imp…
In this proceeding we summarize results for baryonic contact terms derived within SU(3) chiral effective field theory. The four-baryon contact terms, necessary for the description of the hyperon-nucleon interaction, include SU(3) symmetric and explicit chiral symmetry breaking terms. They also include four-baryon contact terms involving pseudoscalar mesons, which become important for three-body forces. Furthermore we derive the leading order six-baryon contact terms in the non-relativistic limit and study their contribution to the $ΛNN$ three-body contact interaction. These results could play …
We study octet-octet baryon ($J^P = {\textstyle \frac12}^+$) contact interactions in SU(3) chiral effective field theory by using large-$N_c$ operator analysis. Applying the $1/N_c$ expansion of the Hartee Hamiltonian, we find 15 operators in the octet-octet baryon potential where 4 operators for leading order (LO) and 11 for and net-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). The large-$N_c$ operator analysis of octet-octet baryon matrix elements reduces the number of free parameters from 15 to 6 at LO of the $1/N_c$ expansion. The application of large-$N_c$ sum rules to the Jülich model of hyperon-nucl…
We calculate hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions at next-to-leading order in SU(3) baryon chiral perturbation theory extending earlier work by the Bonn-Juelich group. The constructed potentials in momentum space include all one- and two-meson exchange terms generated by the SU(3) chiral Lagrangian. Effects from intermediate decuplet baryons are considered as well. These chiral baryon-baryon potentials, together with appropriate contact terms, provide a new basis for systematic studies of hyperon-nucleon scattering and light hypernuclei.
The in-medium properties of a hyperon-nucleon potential, derived within chiral effective field theory and fitted to Lambda-N and Sigma-N scattering data, are investigated. Results for the single-particle potentials of the Lambda and Sigma hyperons in nuclear matter are reported, based on a conventional first-order Brueckner calculation. The Sigma-nucleus potential is found to be repulsive, in agreement with phenomenological information. A weak Lambda-nucleus spin-orbit interaction can be achieved by an appropriate adjustment of a low-energy constant corresponding to an antisymmetric Lambda-N -…
We have constructed the leading order hyperon-nucleon potential in a chiral Effective Field Theory approach. The chiral potential consists of one-pseudoscalar-meson exchanges and non-derivative four-baryon contact terms. The hyperon-nucleon interactions are derived using SU(3) symmetry, the nucleon-nucleon interaction is not considered explicitly since it can not be described well with a leading order chiral Effective Field Theory. We solve a regularized Lippmann-Schwinger equation and show that a good description of the available hyperon-nucleon scattering data is possible with five free para…
Based on the chiral kinetic approach using initial conditions from a multiphase transport model, we study the spin polarizations of quarks and antiquarks in non-central heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Because of the non-vanishing vorticity field in these collisions, quarks and antiquarks are found to acquire appreciable spin polarizations in the direction perpendicular to the reaction plane. Converting quarks and antiquarks to hadrons via the coalescence model, we further calculate the spin polarizations of Lambda and anti-Lambda hyperons and find their values comp…
Hyperon-nucleons interactions constructed by two frameworks, the Kyoto-Niigata SU$_6$ quark model and the chiral effective field theory, are compared by investigating equivalent interactions in a low-momentum space and in addition by calculating hyperon single-particle potentials in the lowest-order Brueckner theory in symmetric nuclear matter. Two descriptions are shown to give similar matrix elements in most channels after renormalizing high momentum components. Although the range of the $ΛN$ interaction is different in two potentials, the $Λ$ single-particle potential in nuclear matter is v…
We investigate the importance of final state interactions in weak nonleptonic hyperon decays within a relativistic chiral unitary approach based on coupled channels. The effective potentials for meson-baryon scattering are derived from a chiral effective Lagrangian and iterated in a Bethe-Salpeter equation, which generates the low lying baryon resonances dynamically. The inclusion of final state interactions decreases the discrepancy between theory and experiment for both s and p waves. Our study indicates that contributions from higher order terms of the weak effective Lagrangian may play an …
A lecture given at the International School Seminar on {\sl Hadrons and Nuclei from QCD}, Tsuruga-Vladivostok-Sapporo, August-September, 1993. A realistic hyperon ($Y$)-nucleon ($N$) interaction based on the quark model and the one-boson-exchange potential is constructed. The Nijmegen potential model D with the SU(3) flavor symmetry is modified with a quark exchange interaction at the short-distance, which replaces the short-range repulsive core in the original model. The flavor-spin dependences of the short-range repulsion are qualitatively different from the original hard-core potential. We …
Results from an ongoing study of baryon-baryon systems with strangeness S=-1 and -2 within chiral effective field theory are reported. The investigations are based on the scheme proposed by Weinberg which has been applied rather successfully to the nucleon-nucleon interaction in the past. Results for the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions obtained to leading order are reviewed. Specifically, the issue of extrapolating the binding energy of the H-dibaryon, extracted from recent lattice QCD simulations, to the physical point is addressed. Furthermore, first results for the hyperon-…
We examine the role of hyperons in a neutron star based on the relativistic mean field approach. For nuclear matter below 1.5 times the normal nuclear density we constrain the model parameters by using the symmetric nuclear matter properties and theoretical investigations for neutron matter in the literature. We then extend the model to higher densities by including hyperons and isoscalar vector mesons that contain strangeness degree of freedom. We confirm that the $ϕ$ meson induces a $Λ$ repulsive force and hardens the equation of state. The hardening arising from the $ϕ$ meson compensates th…
In this paper, we study the low energy kaon-hyperon interaction considering effective chiral Lagrangians that include kaons, $σ$ mesons, hyperons and the corresponding resonances. The scattering amplitudes are calculated and then we determine the angular distributions and polarizations.
Using SU(3) chiral perturbation theory we calculate the density-dependent complex mean field $U_Σ(k_f)+ i W_Σ(k_f)$ of a $Σ$-hyperon in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter. The leading long-range $ΣN $-interaction arises from one-kaon exchange and from two-pion exchange with a $Σ$- or a $Λ$-hyperon in the intermediate state. We find from the $ΣN\to ΛN$ conversion process at nuclear matter saturation density $ρ_0 = 0.16 $fm$^{-3}$ an imaginary single-particle potential of $W_Σ(k_{f0}) =-21.5$ MeV, in fair agreement with existing empirical determinations. The genuine long-range contributions from i…
We present a novel approach to the density dependent mean field and the spin-orbit interaction of a $Λ$-hyperon in a nuclear many-body system, based on flavor-SU(3) in-medium chiral perturbation theory. The leading long-range $ΛN$-interaction arises from kaon exchange and from two-pion exchange with a $Σ$-hyperon in the intermediate state. The empirical $Λ$-nucleus potential depth of about $-28 $MeV is well reproduced with a single cutoff scale, $\bar Λ= 0.7 $GeV, effectively representing all short-distance (high-momentum) dynamics not resolved at scales characteristic of the nuclear Fermi mom…
The Jülich-Bonn group aims at an extensive study of the baryon-baryon ($BB$) interaction involving strange baryons ($Λ$, $Σ$, $Ξ$) within SU(3) chiral effective field theory. An overview of achievements and new developments over the past few years is provided. The topics covered are: 1) Derivation of the leading charge-symmetry breaking (CSB) interaction for the $ΛN$ system and its application in a study of CSB effects in $A$=$4$ $Λ$-hypernuclei. 2) Updated results for the $ΞN$ interaction at NLO and predictions for $Ξ^- p$ correlation functions. 3) Extension of the $ΛN$-$ΣN$ interaction to ne…
We extend a chiral effective field theory approach to the $Λ$-nuclei interaction with the inclusion of the decuplet baryons. More precisely, we study the contributions due to the long-range two-pion exchange, with $Σ$ and $Σ^*$ baryons in the internal baryonic lines considering Nh and $Δ$h excitations. In particular, central and spin-orbit potentials are studied. For the former, regularization is needed and physical values of the cut-off give a large attraction, becoming necessary to include the repulsion of other terms not considered here. For the latter, in a model-independent framework, the…
Adopting hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon-nucleon interactions parametrized in chiral effective field theory, single-particle potentials of the $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperons are evaluated in symmetric nuclear matter and in pure neutron matter within the framework of lowest order Bruckner theory. The chiral NLO interaction bears strong $Λ$N-$Σ$N coupling. Although the $Λ$ potential is repulsive if the coupling is switched off, the $Λ$N-$Σ$N correlation brings about the attraction consistent with empirical data. The $Σ$ potential is repulsive, which is also consistent with empirical information. The i…
The quark model description of the hyperon nucleon forces, especially the antisymmetric spin-orbit forces, is studied from the spin-flavor SU(6) and the flavor SU(3) symmetry point of view. It is pointed out that the quark exchange interaction predicts strong antisymmetric spin-orbit force between the hyperon and nucleon.
In the past, the axion-nucleon coupling has been calculated in the framework of SU(2) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory up to third order in the chiral power counting. Here, we extend these earlier studies to the case of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory with SU(3) flavor symmetry and derive the axion coupling to the full SU(3) baryon octet, showing that the axion also significantly couples to hyperons. As studies on dense nuclear matter suggest the possible existence of hyperons in stellar objects such as neutron stars, our results should have phenomenological implications related…
The $ΛN$ and $ΣN$ interactions are considered at next-to-leading order in SU(3) chiral effective field theory. Different options for the low-energy constants that determine the strength of the contact interactions are explored. Two variants are analysed in detail which yield equivalent results for $ΛN$ and $ΣN$ scattering observables but differ in the strength of the $ΛN \to ΣN$ transition potential. The influence of this difference on predictions for light hypernuclei and on the properties of the $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperons in nuclear matter is investigated and discussed. The effect of the variation…
