We predict the energy per baryon in nuclear matter with non-zero fraction of $Λ$ hyperons. We include Dirac effects on the nucleons as well as the $Λ$ and describe how the latter is implemented. We use the nucleon-hyperon meson-exchange potentials from the Juelich group, the latest as well as an earlier version. The dependence of the results on the many-body framework and on the nucleon-hyperon interaction model is discussed.
The density dependent relativistic hadron (DDRH) theory is introduced as an effective field theory for nuclei and hypernuclei. A Dirac-Brueckner approach to in-medium nucleon-hyperon interactions is presented. Density dependent meson-baryon vertices are determined from DBHF self-energies in infinite matter. Scaling laws for hyperon vertices are derived from a diagrammatic analysis of self-energies. In a local density approximation the DB vertices are applied in relativistic DDRH Hartree calculations to finite hypernuclei. Lambda single particle spectra and spin-orbit splittings are described r…
We perform Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations of hypernuclear matter at finite temperature and provide convenient analytical parametrizations of the results. We study then the properties of (proto)neutron stars containing hyperons. We find important effects of trapping and finite temperature on the structure of hyperonic stars.
Starting with a bare nucleon-nucleon interaction, for the first time the full relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock equations are solved for finite nuclei in a Dirac-Woods-Saxon basis. No free parameters are introduced to calculate the ground-state properties of finite nuclei. The nucleus $^{16}$O is investigated as an example. The resulting ground-state properties, such as binding energy and charge radius, are considerably improved as compared with the non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results and much closer to the experimental data. We review the current status of our microscopic calculations in asymmetric nuclear matter. Updated predictions of the equation of state are made available to potential users. We discuss the features of our EoS in relation to the predicted neutron star maximum masses.
In a relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculation we include explicit negative-energy states in the two-body propagator. This is achieved by using the Gross spectator-equation, modified by medium effects. Qualitatively our results compare well with other RBHF calculations. In some details significant differences occur, e.g, our equation of state is stiffer and the momentum dependence of the self-energy components is stronger than found in a reference calculation without intermediate negative energy states.
We calculate self-consistent single-nucleon and single-Lambda potentials in hyperonic matter for different Lambda concentrations. The predictions include relativistic Dirac effects as reported previously in a calculation of the Lambda binding energy in symmetric nuclear matter. We discuss the dependence on momentum, density, and Lambda fraction.

We have performed self-consistent Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) and its renormalized theory to the structure calculations of finite nuclei. The $G$-matrix is calculated within the BHF basis, and the exact Pauli exclusion operator is determined by the BHF spectrum. Self-consistent occupation probabilities are included in the renormalized Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF). Various systematics and convergences are studies. Spin-polarized isospin asymmetric nuclear matter is studied within the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach. After a brief review of the formalism, we present and discuss the self-consistent single-particle potentials at various levels of spin and isospin asymmetry. We then move to predictions of the energy per particle, also under different conditions of isospin and spin polarization. The Brueckner--Hartree--Fock formalism is applied to study spin polarized neutron matter properties. Results of the total energy per particle as a function of the spin polarization and density are presented for two modern realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, Nijmegen II and Reid93. We find that the dependence of the energy on the spin polarization is practically parabolic in the full range of polarizations. The magnetic susceptibility of the system is computed. Our results show no indication of a ferromagnetic transition which becomes even more difficult as the density increases.

In the calculation of the $K^+$-nucleus cross sections, the coupling of the mesons exchanged between the $K^+$ and the target nucleons to the polarization of the Fermi and Dirac seas has been taken into account. This polarization has been calculated in the one-loop approximation but summed up to all orders (RPA approximation). For this calculation a density-dependent Brueckner-Hartree-Fock NN interaction providing a good description of both nuclear matter and finite nuclei has been used. The agreement with experiment is considerably improved.
We compare nuclear and neutron matter predictions based on two different ab initio approaches to nuclear forces and the nuclear many-body problem. The first consists of a realistic meson-theoretic nucleon-nucleon potential together with the relativistic counterpart of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory of nuclear matter. We have calculated the proton spectral functions in finite nuclei based on the local density approximation where the properties of finite nuclei and nuclear matter are calculated by the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method and the extended Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach, respectively. The scaled spectral function from our calculation is in good agreement with experimental results at small momenta while the difference between them becomes apparent at high momenta. On the way of a microscopic derivation of covariant density functionals, the first complete solution of the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) equations is presented for symmetric nuclear matter. We investigate the appearance of di-neutron bound states in pure neutron matter within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach at zero temperature. We consider Argonne $v_{18}$ and Paris bare interactions as well as chiral two- and three-nucleon forces. Self-consistent single-particle potentials are calculated controlling explicitly singularities in the $g$ matrix associated with bound states. We study the spinodal instabilities of asymmetric nuclear matter at finite temperature within the microscopic Brueckner--Hartree--Fock (BHF) approximation using the realistic Argonne V18 nucleon-nucleon potential plus a three-body force of Urbana type. Our results are compared with those obtained with the Skyrme force SLy230a and the relativistic mean field models NL3 and TW. We find that BHF predicts a larger spinodal region. We present a calculation of asymmetric nuclear matter properties in a relativistic Brueckner Hartree Fock framework. Following other calculations the components of the self-energies are extracted by projecting on Lorentz invariant amplitudes. It is shown that for asymmetric nuclear matter one needs a sixth invariant. We present a set of invariants which in the limit of symmetric nuclear matter reduces to the conventional set. We study the properties of nuclear matter with lattice nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) potential in the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory. To use this potential in such a microscopic many-body theory, we firstly have to construct a one-boson-exchange potential (OBEP) based on the latest lattice $NN$ potential. Three mesons, pion, $σ$ meson, and $ω$ meson, are considered. Their coupling constants and cut-off momenta are determined by fitting the on-shell behaviors and phase shifts of the lattice force, respectively. We study the structure of newly born neutron stars (protoneutron stars) within the finite temperature Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone theoretical approach including also hyperons. We find that for purely nucleonic stars both finite temperature and neutrino trapping reduce the value of the maximum mass. For hyperonic stars the effect is reversed, because neutrino trapping shifts the appearance of hyperons to larger baryon density and stiffens considerably the equation of state.
The properties of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter have been investigated in the framework of the extended Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation at zero temperature. Self-consistent calculations using the Argonne $V_{14}$ interaction are reported for several asymmetry parameters $β= \frac{N - Z}{A}$ ranging from symmetric nuclear matter to pure neutron matter. We calculate the effective masses of neutrons and protons in dense nuclear matter within the microscopic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock many-body theory and study the impact on the neutrino emissivity processes of neutron stars. We compare results based on different nucleon-nucleon potentials and nuclear three-body forces. Useful parametrizations of the numerical results are given. We find substantial in-medium suppression of the emissivities, strongly dependent on the interactions.
We consider the thermal conductivity, shear viscosity, and momentum relaxation rates in the nucleon cores of the neutron stars. We study how the choice of the nuclear interaction and the model for three-body forces may affect these transport coefficients calculated within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock many-body nuclear theory. We find that at relatively large densities the model dependence of the results is substantial. In addition we provide the analytical approximations which allow to incorporate our results in practical simulations.
The relation between energy and density (known as the nuclear equation of state) plays a major role in a variety of nuclear and astrophysical systems. Spin and isospin asymmetries can have a dramatic impact on the equation of state and possibly alter its stability conditions. An example is the possible manifestation of ferromagnetic instabilities, which would indicate the existence, at a certain density, of a spin-polarized state with lower energy than the unpolarized one. We calculate several neutron star properties, for static and/or rotating stars, using equations of state based on different microscopic models. These include our Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock model and others derived from the non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach implemented with microscopic three-body forces. The model dependence is discussed.
In the framework of the non-relativistic Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone theory, we derive a microscopic equation of state for asymmetric and $β$-stable matter containing $Σ^-$ and $Λ$ hyperons. We mainly study the effects of three-body forces (TBFs) among nucleons on the hyperon formation and the equation of state (EoS). We find that, when TBFs are included, the stellar core is almost equally populated by nucleons and hyperons. The resulting EoS, which turns out to be extremely soft, has been used in order to calculate the static structure of neutron stars. We obtain a value of the maximum mass of …
We present results from Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculatons for beta stable neutron star matter with nucleonic and hyperonic degress degrees of freedom, employing the most recent parametrizations of the baryon-baryon interaction of the Nijmegen group. It is found that the only strange baryons emergin in beta stable matter up to total barionic densities of 1.2 fm^-3 are $Σ^-$ and $Λ$. The corresponding equations of state are then used to compute properties of neutron stars such as masses and radii.
We investigate the properties of the hadron-quark mixed phase in compact stars using a Brueckner-Hartree-Fock framework for hadronic matter and the MIT bag model for quark matter. We find that the equation of state of the mixed phase is similar to that given by the Maxwell construction. The composition of the mixed phase, however, is very different from that of the Maxwell construction; in particular, hyperons are completely suppressed.
The momentum and isospin dependence of the single-particle potential for the in-medium nucleon are the key quantities in the Relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory. The three-body force (TBF) effect on the neutrino emissivity in neutron star matter and the total neutrino emissivity of neutron stars have been investigated within the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach by adopting the AV18 two-body interaction plus a microscopic TBF. The neutrino emissivity from the direct Urca process turns out to be much larger than that from the modified Urca process. A Skyrme-like effective interaction is built up from the equation of state of nuclear matter. The latter is calculated in the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation with two and three body forces. A complete Skyrme parametrization requires a fit of the neutron and proton effective masses and also the Landau parameters. The new parametrization is probed on the properties of a set of closed-shell and closed-subshell nuclei, including binding energies and charge radii.
We study the equation of state of hyperon-rich matter for neutron stars using an extended relativistic mean-field model. We take special care of the recently proposed non-linear behaviour of the vector field which gives a much better description of Dirac-Brueckner calculations. We also discuss the correlation between the neutron skin and the radius of a fixed-mass neutron star.
