We calculate self-consistent single-nucleon and single-Lambda potentials in hyperonic matter for different Lambda concentrations. The predictions include relativistic Dirac effects as reported previously in a calculation of the Lambda binding energy in symmetric nuclear matter. We discuss the dependence on momentum, density, and Lambda fraction.
Starting with a bare nucleon-nucleon interaction, for the first time the full relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock equations are solved for finite nuclei in a Dirac-Woods-Saxon basis. No free parameters are introduced to calculate the ground-state properties of finite nuclei. The nucleus $^{16}$O is investigated as an example. The resulting ground-state properties, such as binding energy and charge radius, are considerably improved as compared with the non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results and much closer to the experimental data. This opens the door for \emph{ab initio} covariant inv…
We review the current status of our microscopic calculations in asymmetric nuclear matter. Updated predictions of the equation of state are made available to potential users. We discuss the features of our EoS in relation to the predicted neutron star maximum masses.
In a relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculation we include explicit negative-energy states in the two-body propagator. This is achieved by using the Gross spectator-equation, modified by medium effects. Qualitatively our results compare well with other RBHF calculations. In some details significant differences occur, e.g, our equation of state is stiffer and the momentum dependence of the self-energy components is stronger than found in a reference calculation without intermediate negative energy states.
The understanding of the interaction of nucleons in nuclear and neutron-rich matter at non-zero temperature is important for a variety of applications ranging from heavy-ion collisions to nuclear astrophysics. In this paper we apply the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock method along with the Bonn B nucleon-nucleon potential to predict single-particle properties in symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter at finite temperature. It is found that temperature effects are generally small but can be significant at low density and momentum.
We have performed self-consistent Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) and its renormalized theory to the structure calculations of finite nuclei. The $G$-matrix is calculated within the BHF basis, and the exact Pauli exclusion operator is determined by the BHF spectrum. Self-consistent occupation probabilities are included in the renormalized Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF). Various systematics and convergences are studies. Good results are obtained for the ground-state energy and radius. RBHF can give a more reasonable single-particle spectrum and radius. We present a first benchmark calculation with …
Spin-polarized isospin asymmetric nuclear matter is studied within the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach. After a brief review of the formalism, we present and discuss the self-consistent single-particle potentials at various levels of spin and isospin asymmetry. We then move to predictions of the energy per particle, also under different conditions of isospin and spin polarization. Comparison with the energy per particle in isospin symmetric or asymmetric unpolarized nuclear matter shows no evidence for a phase transition to a spin ordered state, neither ferromagnetic nor antiferromagneti…
The Brueckner--Hartree--Fock formalism is applied to study spin polarized neutron matter properties. Results of the total energy per particle as a function of the spin polarization and density are presented for two modern realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, Nijmegen II and Reid93. We find that the dependence of the energy on the spin polarization is practically parabolic in the full range of polarizations. The magnetic susceptibility of the system is computed. Our results show no indication of a ferromagnetic transition which becomes even more difficult as the density increases.

In this papre we apply the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock method along with the Bonn B potential to predict single-particle properties in symmetric nuclear matter and neutron-rich matter at finite temperature. In the calculation of the $K^+$-nucleus cross sections, the coupling of the mesons exchanged between the $K^+$ and the target nucleons to the polarization of the Fermi and Dirac seas has been taken into account. This polarization has been calculated in the one-loop approximation but summed up to all orders (RPA approximation). For this calculation a density-dependent Brueckner-Hartree-Fock NN interaction providing a good description of both nuclear matter and finite nuclei has been used. The agreement with experiment is considerably improved.
We compare nuclear and neutron matter predictions based on two different ab initio approaches to nuclear forces and the nuclear many-body problem. The first consists of a realistic meson-theoretic nucleon-nucleon potential together with the relativistic counterpart of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory of nuclear matter. The second is based on chiral effective field theory, with density-dependent interactions derived from leading order chiral three-nucleon forces. We find the results to be very close and conclude that both approaches contain important features governing the physics of nuclear a…
We have calculated the proton spectral functions in finite nuclei based on the local density approximation where the properties of finite nuclei and nuclear matter are calculated by the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method and the extended Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach, respectively. The scaled spectral function from our calculation is in good agreement with experimental results at small momenta while the difference between them becomes apparent at high momenta. Besides, a target dependence of the scaled proton spectral function is also obtained in our calculation as was observed in experiment. A furt…
On the way of a microscopic derivation of covariant density functionals, the first complete solution of the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) equations is presented for symmetric nuclear matter. In most of the earlier investigations, the $G$-matrix is calculated only in the space of positive energy solutions. On the other side, for the solution of the relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) equations, also the elements of this matrix connecting positive and negative energy solutions are required. So far, in the literature, these matrix elements are derived in various approximations. We discus…
Neutron drops confined in an external field are studied in the framework of relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory using the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction. The ground state energies and radii of neutron drops with even numbers from $N = 4$ to $N=50$ are calculated and compared with results obtained from other nonrelativistic \textit{ab initio} calculations and from relativistic density functional theory. Special attention has been paid to the magic numbers and to the sub-shell closures. The single-particle energies are investigated and the monopole effect of the tensor force on the evol…
We predict the energy per baryon in nuclear matter with non-zero fraction of $Λ$ hyperons. We include Dirac effects on the nucleons as well as the $Λ$ and describe how the latter is implemented. We use the nucleon-hyperon meson-exchange potentials from the Juelich group, the latest as well as an earlier version. The dependence of the results on the many-body framework and on the nucleon-hyperon interaction model is discussed.
We have developed a formalism for microscopic Brueckner-type calculations of dense nuclear matter that includes all types of baryon-baryon interactions and allows to treat any asymmetry on the fractions of the different species (n, p, $Λ$, $Σ^0$, $Σ^+$, $Σ^-$, $Ξ^-$ and $Ξ^0$). We present results for the different single-particle potentials focussing on situations that can be relevant in future microscopic studies of beta-stable neutron star matter with strangeness. We find the both the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions play a non-negligible role in determining the chemical pote…
Starting from the Bonn potential, relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) equations are solved for nuclear matter in the full Dirac space, which provides a unique way to determine the single-particle potentials and avoids the approximations applied in the RBHF calculations in the Dirac space with positive-energy states (PESs) only. The uncertainties of the RBHF calculations in the Dirac space with PESs only are investigated, and the importance of the RBHF calculations in the full Dirac space is demonstrated. In the RBHF calculations in the full Dirac space, the empirical saturation properti…
Starting from the relativistic form of the Bonn potential as a bare nucleon-nucleon interaction, the full Relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) equations are solved for finite nuclei in a fully self-consistent basis. This provides a relativistic ab initio calculation of the ground state properties of finite nuclei without any free parameters and without three-body forces. The convergence properties for the solutions of these coupled equations are discussed in detail at the example of the nucleus $^{16}$O. The binding energies, radii, and spin-orbit splittings of the doubly magic nuclei $^…
We investigate the appearance of di-neutron bound states in pure neutron matter within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach at zero temperature. We consider Argonne $v_{18}$ and Paris bare interactions as well as chiral two- and three-nucleon forces. Self-consistent single-particle potentials are calculated controlling explicitly singularities in the $g$ matrix associated with bound states. Di-neutrons are loosely bound, with binding energies below $1$ MeV, but are unambiguously present for Fermi momenta below $1$ fm$^{-1}$ for all interactions. Within the same framework we are able to calculat…
We study the spinodal instabilities of asymmetric nuclear matter at finite temperature within the microscopic Brueckner--Hartree--Fock (BHF) approximation using the realistic Argonne V18 nucleon-nucleon potential plus a three-body force of Urbana type. Our results are compared with those obtained with the Skyrme force SLy230a and the relativistic mean field models NL3 and TW. We find that BHF predicts a larger spinodal region. This result is a direct consequence of the fact that our Brueckner calculation predicts a larger critical temperature and saturation density of symmetric nuclear matter …
We present a calculation of asymmetric nuclear matter properties in a relativistic Brueckner Hartree Fock framework. Following other calculations the components of the self-energies are extracted by projecting on Lorentz invariant amplitudes. It is shown that for asymmetric nuclear matter one needs a sixth invariant. We present a set of invariants which in the limit of symmetric nuclear matter reduces to the conventional set. We argue that the existence of such a properly behaving set is also crucial for the application of the projection method in symmetric nuclear matter. Results for the equa…
We study the properties of nuclear matter with lattice nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) potential in the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory. To use this potential in such a microscopic many-body theory, we firstly have to construct a one-boson-exchange potential (OBEP) based on the latest lattice $NN$ potential. Three mesons, pion, $σ$ meson, and $ω$ meson, are considered. Their coupling constants and cut-off momenta are determined by fitting the on-shell behaviors and phase shifts of the lattice force, respectively. Therefore, we obtain two parameter sets of the OBEP potential (named as …
The properties of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter have been investigated in the framework of the extended Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation at zero temperature. Self-consistent calculations using the Argonne $V_{14}$ interaction are reported for several asymmetry parameters $β= \frac{N - Z}{A}$ ranging from symmetric nuclear matter to pure neutron matter. The binding energy per nucleon fulfills the $β^2$ law in the whole asymmetry range. The symmetry energy is calculated for different densities and discussed in comparison with other predictions. At the saturation point it is in fairly goo…
We study the properties of hot neutrino-trapped beta-stable stellar matter using an equation of state of nuclear matter within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach including three-body forces, combined with a standard chiral model for kaon condensation at finite temperature. The properties of (proto)neutron stars are then investigated within this framework.
Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory allows to derive the $G$-matrix as an effective interaction between nucleons in the nuclear medium. It depends on the center of mass momentum $\bm{P}$ of the two particles and on the two relative momenta $\bm{q}$ and $\bm{q'}$ before and after the scattering process. In the evaluation of the total energy per particle in nuclear matter usually the angle averaged center of mass momentum approximation has been used. We derive in detail the exact expressions of the angular integrations of the momentum $\bm{P}$ within relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory, …
We present Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations for isospin asymmetric nuclear matter which are based on improved approximations schemes. The potential matrix elements have been adapted for isospin asymmetric nuclear matter in order to account for the proton-neutron mass splitting in a more consistent way. The proton properties are particularly sensitive to this adaption and its consequences, whereas the neutron properties remains almost unaffected in neutron rich matter. Although at present full Brueckner calculations are still too complex to apply to finite nuclei, these relativistic Br…
The isospin dependence of the nucleon effective mass is investigated in the framework of the Dirac Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach. The definition of nucleon scalar and vector effective masses in the relativistic approach is clarified. Only the vector effective mass is the quantity related to the empirical value extracted from the analysis in the nonrelatiistic shell and optical potentials. In the relativistic mean field theory, where the nucleon scalar and vector potentials are both energy independent, the neutron vector potential is stronger than that of proton in the neutron rich nuc…
Recently, a microscopically motivated nuclear energy density functional was derived by applying the density matrix expansion to the Hartree-Fock (HF) energy obtained from long-range chiral effective field theory two- and three-nucleon interactions. However, the HF approach cannot account for all many-body correlations. One class of correlations is included by Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) theory, which gives an improved definition of the one-body HF potential by replacing the interaction by a reaction matrix $G$. In this paper, we find that the difference between the $G$-matrix and the nucleon-…
One of the open problems in nuclear structure is how to predict properties of finite nuclei from the knowledge of a bare nucleon-nucleon interaction of the meson-exchange type. We point out that a promising starting point consists in Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (DBHF) calculations us- ing realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions like the Bonn potentials, which are able to reproduce satisfactorily the properties of symmetric nuclear matter without the need for 3-body forces, as is necessary in non-relativistic BHF calculations. However, the DBHF formalism is still too com- plicated to be used di…
We calculate the effective masses of neutrons and protons in dense nuclear matter within the microscopic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock many-body theory and study the impact on the neutrino emissivity processes of neutron stars. We compare results based on different nucleon-nucleon potentials and nuclear three-body forces. Useful parametrizations of the numerical results are given. We find substantial in-medium suppression of the emissivities, strongly dependent on the interactions.
The relativistic optical model potential (OMP) for nucleon-nucleus scattering is investigated in the framework of Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach using the Bonn-B One-Boson- Exchange potential for the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction. Both real and imaginary parts of isospin-dependent nucleon self-energies in nuclear medium are derived from the DBHF approach based on the projection techniques within the subtracted T -matrix representation. The Dirac potentials as well as the corresponding Schrodinger equivalent potentials are evaluated. An improved local density approximation is e…
The microscopic mechanisms of the symmetry energy in nuclear matter are investigated in the framework of the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) model with a high-precision realistic nuclear potential, pvCDBonn A. The kinetic energy and potential contributions to symmetry energy are decomposed. They are explicitly expressed by the nucleon self-energies, which are obtained through projecting the $G$-matrices from the RBHF model into the terms of Lorentz covariants. The nuclear medium effects on the nucleon self-energy and nucleon-nucleon interaction in symmetry energy are discussed by co…
We consider the thermal conductivity, shear viscosity, and momentum relaxation rates in the nucleon cores of the neutron stars. We study how the choice of the nuclear interaction and the model for three-body forces may affect these transport coefficients calculated within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock many-body nuclear theory. We find that at relatively large densities the model dependence of the results is substantial. In addition we provide the analytical approximations which allow to incorporate our results in practical simulations.
The relation between energy and density (known as the nuclear equation of state) plays a major role in a variety of nuclear and astrophysical systems. Spin and isospin asymmetries can have a dramatic impact on the equation of state and possibly alter its stability conditions. An example is the possible manifestation of ferromagnetic instabilities, which would indicate the existence, at a certain density, of a spin-polarized state with lower energy than the unpolarized one. This issue is being discussed extensively in the literature and the conclusions are presently very model dependent. We wil…
We calculate several neutron star properties, for static and/or rotating stars, using equations of state based on different microscopic models. These include our Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock model and others derived from the non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach implemented with microscopic three-body forces. The model dependence is discussed.
The three-body force (TBF) effect on the neutrino emissivity in neutron star matter and the total neutrino emissivity of neutron stars have been investigated within the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach by adopting the AV18 two-body interaction plus a microscopic TBF. The neutrino emissivity from the direct Urca process turns out to be much larger than that from the modified Urca process. Inclusion of the TBF reduces strongly the density thresholds of the direct Urca processes involving electrons and muons. The TBF effect on the total neutrino emissivity of neutron stars is show…
The momentum and isospin dependence of the single-particle potential for the in-medium nucleon are the key quantities in the Relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory. It depends on how to extract the scalar and the vector components of the single-particle potential inside nuclear matter. In contrast to the RBHF calculations in the Dirac space with the positive-energy states (PESs) only, the single-particle potential can be determined in a unique way by the RBHF theory together with the negative-energy states (NESs), i.e., the RBHF theory in the full Dirac space. The saturation propert…
Properties of nuclear matter are investigated in the framework of relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock model with the latest high-precision charge-dependent Bonn (pvCD-Bonn) potentials, where the coupling between pion and nucleon is adopted as pseudovector form. These realistic pvCD-Bonn potentials are renormalized to effective nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interactions, $G$ matrices. They are obtained by solving the Blankenbecler-Sugar (BbS) equation in nuclear medium. Then, the saturation properties of symmetric nuclear matter are calculated with pvCD-Bonn A, B, C potentials. The energies per nucleo…
Within the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach, using the Bonn potentials, we investigate the properties of dense, asymmetric nuclear matter and apply it to neutron stars. In the actual calculations of the nucleon self-energies and the energy density of matter, we study in detail the validity of an angle-averaged approximation and an averaging of the total momentum squared of interacting two-nucleons in nuclear matter. For practical use, we provide convenient parametrizations for the equation of state for symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter. We also parametrize the nucleon self-…
As the interior density of a neutron star can become very high, it has been expected and discussed that quark matter may exist inside it. To describe the transition from hadron to quark phases (and vice versa), there are mainly two methods; one is the first-order phase transition, and the other is the crossover phenomenon. In the present study, using the flavor-SU (3) NJL model with the vector coupling interaction, we have calculated the equation of state for the quark phase at high density. Furthermore, for the hadron phase at low density, we have used two kinds of the equations of state; one…
A Skyrme-like effective interaction is built up from the equation of state of nuclear matter. The latter is calculated in the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation with two and three body forces. A complete Skyrme parametrization requires a fit of the neutron and proton effective masses and also the Landau parameters. The new parametrization is probed on the properties of a set of closed-shell and closed-subshell nuclei, including binding energies and charge radii.
We explore neutron skin predictions for $^{208}$Pb in relation to the symmetry pressure in various microscopic models based on realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials and either the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach or the conventional Brueckner-Hartree-Fock framework implemented with three-body forces. We also discuss the correlation between the neutron skin and the radius of a fixed-mass neutron star.
Two different approximation schemes for the self-consistent solution of the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock equation for finite nuclei are discussed using realistic One-Boson-Exchange potentials. In a first scheme, the effects of correlations are deduced from a study of nuclear matter and parameterized in terms of an effective $σ$, $ω$ and $π$ exchange. Employing this effective interaction relativistic Hartree-Fock equations are solved for finite nuclei \osi , \caf\ and \cafe . In the second approach the effect of correlations are treated in the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation directl…
We investigate nuclear matter properties in the relativistic Brueckner approach. The in-medium on-shell T-matrix is represented covariantly by five Lorentz invariant amplitudes from which we deduce directly the nucleon self-energy. We discuss the ambiguities of this approach and the failure of previously used covariant representations in reproducing the nucleon self-energies on the Hartree-Fock level. To enforce correct Hartree-Fock results we develop a subtraction scheme which treats the bare nucleon-nucleon potential exactly in accordance to the different types of meson exchanges. For the re…
In the framework of the non-relativistic Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone theory, we derive a microscopic equation of state for asymmetric and $β$-stable matter containing $Σ^-$ and $Λ$ hyperons. We mainly study the effects of three-body forces (TBFs) among nucleons on the hyperon formation and the equation of state (EoS). We find that, when TBFs are included, the stellar core is almost equally populated by nucleons and hyperons. The resulting EoS, which turns out to be extremely soft, has been used in order to calculate the static structure of neutron stars. We obtain a value of the maximum mass of …
We investigate the momentum dependence of the nucleon self-energy in nuclear matter. We apply the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach and adopt the Bonn A potential. A strong momentum dependence of the scalar and vector self-energy components can be observed when a commonly used pseudo-vector choice for the covariant representation of the T-matrix is applied. This momentum dependence is dominated by the pion exchange. We discuss the problems of this choice and its relations to on-shell ambiguities of the T-matrix representation. Starting from a complete pseudo-vector representation of…
The particle-particle hole-hole ring-diagram summation method is employed to obtain the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter over a wide range of asymmetry fraction. Compared with Brueckner Hartree-Fock and model-space Brueckner Hartree-Fock calculations, this approach gives a softer equation of state, increased symmetry energy and a lower value for the incompressibility modulus which agrees quite well with the values used in the hydrodynamical model for the supernovae explosion.
The density dependent relativistic hadron (DDRH) theory is introduced as an effective field theory for nuclei and hypernuclei. A Dirac-Brueckner approach to in-medium nucleon-hyperon interactions is presented. Density dependent meson-baryon vertices are determined from DBHF self-energies in infinite matter. Scaling laws for hyperon vertices are derived from a diagrammatic analysis of self-energies. In a local density approximation the DB vertices are applied in relativistic DDRH Hartree calculations to finite hypernuclei. Lambda single particle spectra and spin-orbit splittings are described r…
We analyze microscopic many-body calculations of the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence. The calculations are performed in the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock and the Self-Consistent Green's Functions methods. Within Brueckner-Hartree-Fock, the Hellmann-Feynman theorem gives access to the kinetic energy contribution as well as the contributions of the different components of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The tensor component gives the largest contribution to the symmetry energy. The decomposition of the symmetry energy in a kinetic part and a potential energy part pr…
We perform Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations of hypernuclear matter at finite temperature and provide convenient analytical parametrizations of the results. We study then the properties of (proto)neutron stars containing hyperons. We find important effects of trapping and finite temperature on the structure of hyperonic stars.
Using the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach including the hyperon degrees of freedom, we investigate the properties of neutron-star matter. To handle the hyperons in matter, we first examine the importance of the space part of baryon self-energies at high densities, and secondly study the effect of negative-energy states of baryons, which can provide an unambiguous relationship between the in-medium reaction matrices for baryon-baryon scattering and the baryon self-energies. We solve the coupled, Bethe-Salpeter equations in the nuclear-matter rest frame by using the Bonn potentials.…
The properties of asymmetric nuclear matter have been investigated in a relativistic Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock framework using the Bonn A potential. The components of the self-energies are extracted by projecting on Lorentz invariant amplitudes. Furthermore, the optimal representation scheme for the $T$ matrix, the subtracted $T$ matrix representation, is applied and the results are compared to those of other representation schemes. Of course, in the limit of symmetric nuclear matter our results agree with those found in literature. The binding energy $E_b$ fulfills the quadratic dependence…
In order to simulate the relativistic effects of the Dirac Brueckner Hartree Fock approach for finite nuclei the part of the Urbana 3 nucleon (3N) force is considered, which represents the enhancement of the small components of the Dirac spinors for the nucleons in the nuclear medium. This 3N force is included in a Brueckner Hartree Fock calculation with rearrangement terms using a realistic model for the NN interaction. The strength of the 3N force is adjusted to reproduce the empirical saturation point of nuclear matter and then used in corresponding studies of the closed shell nuclei $^{16}…
