By applying a relativistic mean-field description of neutron star matter with density dependent couplings, we analyse the properties of two different matter compositions: nucleonic matter with delta baryons and nucleonic matter with hyperons and delta baryons. The delta-meson couplings are allowed to vary within a wide range of values obtained by experimental data, while the hyperon-meson couplings are fitted to hypernuclear properties. Neutron star properties with no deconfinement phase transition are studied. It is verified that many models are excluded because the effective nucleon mass becomes zero before the maximum mass configuration is attained. Hyperon-free with delta-dominated composition compact stars are possible, the deltic stars. It is found that with a convenient choice of parameters the existence of deltic stars with 80% of delta baryons at the center of the star is possible. However, the presence of hyperons lowers the delta baryon fraction to values below 20% at the center and below 30% at 2-3 saturation densities. It is discussed that in the presence of delta baryons, the hyperon softening is not so drastic because deltas couple more strongly to the $ω$-meson, and the stiffness of the equation of state is determined by the $ω$-dominance at high densities. The speed of sound reflects very well this behavior. The compactness of the pulsar RX J0720.4-3125 imposes $x_{σΔ}>x_{ωΔ}>1$ and favors $x_{ρΔ}>1$.
The decays of excited nonstrange baryons into the final states Delta eta and Delta omega are examined in a relativized quark pair creation model. The wavefunctions and parameters of the model are fixed by previous calculations of N pi and N pi pi, etc., decays through various quasi-two body channels including N eta and N omega. Our results show that the combination of thresholds just below the region of interest and the isospin selectivity of these channels should allow the discovery of several new baryons in such experiments.
Heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is briefly reviewed, paying particular attention to the role of the spin 3/2 delta resonances. The concept of resonance saturation for the baryonic sector is critically discussed. Starting from a relativistic formulation of the pion-nucleon-delta system, the heavy baryon chiral lagrangian including spin 3/2 resonances is constructed by means of a 1/m-expansion. The effective theory obtained admits a systematic expansion in terms of soft momenta, the pion mass $M_π$ and the delta-nucleon mass difference $Δ$.
We study strong decays of nonstrange baryons by making use of the algebraic approach to hadron structure. Within this framework we derive closed expressions for decay widths in an elementary-meson emission model and use these to analyze the experimental data for N* -> N + pi, N* -> Delta + pi, N* -> N + eta, Delta* -> N + pi, Delta* -> Delta + pi and Delta* -> Delta + eta decays.
The quantum chromodynamics (QCD) sum rules for the Delta baryons are analyzed by taking into account the finite-width effects, through explicit utilization of the Breit-Wigner shape. We apply a Monte-Carlo based analysis to the 'traditional' and the parity-projected sum rules. The first Delta excitation state is also considered as a sub-continuum resonance and the widths are calculated using the mass values as input.
The presence of exotic hadrons, such as hyperons and $Δ$ isobars, in the dense nuclear matter in their cores has been shown to produce important changes in the properties of neutron stars. Within the quark-meson coupling model, we show that the many-body forces generated by the change in the internal quark structure of the baryons in the strong scalar mean fields generated in dense nuclear matter prohibit the appearance of $Δ$ isobars.
We present the results of a third order calculation of the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude in a chiral effective field theory with pions, nucleons and delta resonances as explicit degrees of freedom. We work in a manifestly Lorentz invariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory using dimensional regularization and the extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. In the delta resonance sector, the on mass-shell renormalization is realized as a complex-mass scheme. By fitting the low-energy constants of the effective Lagrangian to the $S$- and $P$-partial waves a satisfactory des…
In the framework of relativistic mean field theory, the relativistic neutrino emissivity of the nucleonic and hyperonic direct Urca processes in the degenerate baryon matter of neutron stars are studied. We investigate particularly the influence of the isovector scalar interaction which is considered by exchanging $δ$ meson on the nucleonic and hyperonic direct Urca processes. The results indicate that $δ$ mesons lead to obvious enhancement of the total neutrino emissivity, which must result in more rapid cooling rate of neutron star matter.
The C2/M1 ratio of the electromagnetic N->Delta(1232) transition, which is important for determining the geometric shape of the nucleon, is shown to be related to the neutron elastic form factor ratio G_C^n/G_M^n. The proposed relation holds with good accuracy for the entire range of momentum transfers where data are available.
Strong magnetic fields can modify the microscopic composition of matter with consequences on stellar macroscopic properties. Within this context, we study, for the first time, the possibility of the appearance of spin-3/2 $Δ$ baryons in magnetars. We make use of two different relativistic models for the equation of state of dense matter under the influence of strong magnetic fields considering the effects of Landau levels and the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) proportional to the spin of all baryons and leptons. In particular, we analyze the effects of the AMM of $Δ$ baryons in dense matter f…
In this contribution, baryon axial-vector couplings are studied in the framework of the combined 1/Nc and chiral expansions. This framework is implemented on the basis of the emergent spin-flavor symmetry in baryons at large Nc and HBChPT, and linking both expansions (ξ-expansion), where 1/Nc is taken to be a quantity O(p). The study is carried out including one-loop contributions, which corresponds to O(ξ^3) for baryon masses and O(ξ^2) for the axial couplings. An analysis of the Lattice QCD results for the axial couplings of both N and Δis presented.
Kaon production cross sections in nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-delta and delta-delta interactions are studied in a boson exchange model. For the latter two interactions, the exchanged pion can be on-mass shell, only contributions due to a virtual pion are included via the Peierls method by taking into account the finite delta width. With these cross sections and also those for pion-baryon interactions, subthreshold kaon production from heavy ion collisions is studied in the relativistic transport model.
We develop a methodology that enables us to extract accurately the electromagnetic Delta form factors and their momentum dependence. We test our approach in the quenched approximation as a preparation for a study using dynamical fermions. Our calculation of the four form factors covers pion masses between about 410 MeV and 560 MeV on lattices with a size of 2.9 fm and a lattice spacing 0.09 fm. From the form factors we are able to obtain estimates of the magnetic moment and the charge radius of the Delta, which we compare to existing experimental and theoretical results. Our non-zero result for…
Recent data allow a new parametrization of the neutron charge form factor G_En. A parameter-free quark model relation between G_En and the N->Delta quadrupole form factor is used to predict the latter from the G_En data. In particular, the neutron charge radius is related to N->Delta quadrupole moment, while the fourth moment of G_En connects to the N->Delta quadrupole transition radius. From the latter we derive an experimental value for the charge radius of the light constituent quarks. Finally, the C2/M1 ratio in pion electroproduction is predicted from the elastic neutron form factor data.
A future gamma factory at CERN or accelerator-based gamma sources elsewhere can include the possibility of energetic twisted photons, which are photons with a structured wave front that can allow a pre-defined large angular momentum along the beam direction. Twisted photons are potentially a new tool in hadronic physics, and we consider here one possibility, namely the photoproduction of $Δ$(1232) baryons using twisted photons. We show that particular polarization amplitudes isolate the smaller partial wave amplitudes and they are measurable without interference from the terms that are otherwi…
Recent neutron star observations suggest that the masses and radii of neutron stars may be smaller than previously considered, which would disfavor a purely nucleonic equation of state. In our model, we use a the flavor SU(3) sigma model that includes delta resonances and hyperons in the equation of state. We find that if the coupling of the delta resonances to the vector mesons is slightly smaller than that of the nucleons, we can reproduce both the measured mass-radius relationship and the extrapolated equation of state.
It is seen by a coupled-channel calculation that in the two-baryon N-Delta or Delta-Delta system the width of the state is greatly diminished due to the relative kinetic energy of the two baryons, since the internal energy of the particles, available for pionic decay, is smaller. A similar state dependent effect arises from the centrifugal barrier in N-Delta or Delta-Delta systems with non-zero orbital angular momentum. The double-Delta width can become even smaller than the free width of a single Delta. This has some bearing to the interpretation of the d'(2380) resonance recently discovered …
In this work, we study magnetic field effects on neutron star matter containing the baryon octet and additional heavier spin 3/2 baryons (the $Δ$'s). We make use of two different relativistic hadronic models that contain an additional vector-isovector self interaction for the mesons: one version of a relativistic mean field (RMF) model and the Chiral Mean Field (CMF) model. We find that both the additional interaction and a strong magnetic field enhance the $Δ$ baryon population in dense matter, while decreasing the relative density of hyperons. At the same time that the vector-isovector meson…
We calculate the strong couplings of pions to the Delta(1232) resonance using a QCD parameterization method that includes in addition to the usual one-quark also two-quark and previously uncalculated three-quark operators. We find that three-quark operators are necessary to obtain results consistent with the data and other QCD based baryon structure models. Our results are also in quantitative agreement with a model employing large D state admixtures to the nucleon and Delta wave functions indicating that the pion-nucleon and pion-Delta couplings are sensitive to the spatial shape of these bar…
The inclusion of two-body exchange currents in the constituent quark model leads to several new relations between the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon and Delta(1232). These are:(i) the neutron charge form factor can be expressed as the difference between proton and Delta+ charge form factors, and (ii) the N->Delta charge quadrupole (C2) transition form factor is connected to the charge monopole (C0) form factor of the neutron. The latter relation is used to estimate the charge radius of constituent quarks. Furthermore, we find that exchange currents do not modify the SU(6) relation…
We demonstrate that the observation of neutron stars with masses greater than one solar mass places severe demands on any exotic neutron decay mode that could explain the discrepancy between beam and bottle measurements of the neutron lifetime. If the neutron can decay to a stable, feebly-interacting dark fermion, the maximum possible mass of a neutron star is 0.7 solar masses, while all well-measured neutron star masses exceed one solar mass. The survival of $2 M_\odot$ neutron stars therefore indicates that any explanation beyond the Standard Model for the neutron lifetime puzzle requires da…
In this contribution, we describe new chemically-equilibrated charge-neutral hybrid equations of state for neutron stars. They present a first-order phase transition to quark matter and differentiate by the particle population considered and how these particles interact. While some equations of state contain just nucleons and up, down-quarks, others also contain hyperons, Delta baryons, and strange quarks. The hybrid equations of state, together with corresponding hadronic ones, are available on the CompOSE repository and can be used for different astrophysical applications.
We extend the relativistic mean-field models with hadron masses and meson-baryon coupling constants dependent on the scalar $σ$ field, studied previously to incorporate $Δ(1232)$ baryons. Available empirical information is analyzed to put constraints on the couplings of $Δ$s with meson fields. Conditions for the appearance of $Δ$s are studied. We demonstrate that with inclusion of the $Δ$s our equations of state continue to fulfill majority of known empirical constraints including the pressure-density constraint from heavy-ion collisions, the constraint on the maximum mass of the neutron stars…
We show how one may define baryon constituent quarks in a rigorous manner, given physical assumptions that hold in the large-N_c limit of QCD. This constituent picture gives rise to an operator expansion that has been used to study large-N_c baryon observables; here we apply it to the case of charge radii of the N and Delta states, using minimal dynamical assumptions. For example, one finds the relation r_p^2 - r_{Delta^+}^2 = r_n^2 - r_{Delta^0}^2 to be broken only by three-body, O(1/N_c^2) effects for any N_c.
Theoretical predictions for the magnetic moments of the physical Delta baryons are extracted from lattice QCD calculations. We utilize finite-range regulated effective field theory that is constructed to have the correct Dirac moment mass dependence in the region where the up and down quark masses are heavy. Of particular interest is the chiral nonanalytic behaviour encountered as the nucleon-pion decay channel opens. We find a Delta^++ magnetic moment (at the Delta pole) of 4.99 \pm 0.56 μ_N. This result is within the Particle Data Group range of 3.7-7.5 μ_N and compares well with the experim…
The possible conditions for hadron-quark phase transition in hybrid star cores are investigated in the present work. For the hadronic matter part the effective chiral model is adopted. Exotic baryonic degrees like hyperons and the delta baryons are also taken into account. As $Δ$s posses Breit-Wigner mass distribution ($1232 \pm 120$ MeV), the hadronic equation of state is obtained by varying the mass of the delta baryons in this range. For the quark phase the MIT bag model is chosen with repulsive effects of the unpaired quarks. Phase transition is achieved using Gibbs construction and the gr…
We explore the possibility of formation of $Δ$ baryons (1232 MeV) in neutron star matter in an effective chiral model within the relativistic mean-field framework. With variation in delta-meson couplings, consistent with the constraints imposed on them, the resulting equation of state is obtained and the neutron star properties are calculated for static and spherical configuration. Within the framework of our model the critical densities of formation of $Δ$s and the properties of neutron stars are found to be very sensitive to the iso-vector coupling compared to the scalar or vector couplings.…
We provide a successful fit for proton-neutron scattering below pion production threshold up to LAB energies of 350 MeV. We use seven high-quality fits based on potentials with different forms as a measure of the systematic uncertainty. We represent the interaction as a sum of delta-shells in configuration space below the 3fm and a charge dependent one pion exchange potential above 3fm together with magnetic and vacuum polarization effects. Special attention is paid to estimate the errors of the phenomenological interaction.
We investigate the hadron-quark phase transition in cold neutron stars in light of (i) the observed limits on the maximum-mass of heavy pulsars, (ii) constraints on the tidal properties inferred from the gravitational waves emitted in binary neutron-star mergers, and (iii) mass and radius constraints derived from the observation of hot spots on neutron star observed with NICER. Special attention is directed to the possible presence of $Δ(1232)$ baryons in neutron star matter. Our results indicate that this particle could make up a large fraction of the baryons in neutron stars and thus have a …
In this contribution we review the dynamics of hyperons with nucleons and nuclear matter, paying a special attention to hypernuclei. We also discuss the presence of hyperons in the inner core of neutron stars and the consequences for the structure of these compact stars.
The spectrum of the SU(2) flavor baryons is studied in the frame of a relativistic chiral quark potential model based on the one-pion and one-gluon exchange mechanisms. It is argued that the N* and Delta* resonances strongly coupled to the pi-N channel are identified with the orbital configurations $(1S_{1/2})^2(nlj)$ with a single valence quark in the excited state (nlj). With the obtained selection rules based on the "chiral constraint", we show that it is possible to construct a schematic periodic table of baryon resonances, consistent with the experimental data and yielding no "missing res…
Relationships between mass intervals for free hadrons and in nuclei are studied in two theoretical approaches inspired by QCD: naive quark model and skyrmion model, taking one example each from mesons and baryons, that of pi-rho splitting in mesons, and nucleon-Delta splitting in baryons. Possible deconfinement effects in nuclei are examined.
The neutron lifetime anomaly has been used to motivate the introduction of new physics with hidden-sector particles coupled to baryon number, and on which neutron stars provide powerful constraints. Although the neutron lifetime anomaly may eventually prove to be of mundane origin, we use it as motivation for a broader review of the ways that baryon number violation, be it real or apparent, and dark sectors can intertwine and how neutron star observables, both present and future, can constrain them.
We report observables for elastic Compton scattering from $^3$He in Chiral Effective Field Theory with an explicit $Δ(1232)$ degree of freedom ($χ$EFT) for energies between 50 and 120 MeV. The $γ\,{}^3$He amplitude is complete at N3LO, $\mathcal{O}(e^2δ^3)$, and in general converges well order by order. It includes the dominant pion-loop and two-body currents, as well as the Delta excitation in the single-nucleon amplitude. Since the cross section is two to three times that for deuterium and the spin of polarised $^3$He is predominantly carried by its constituent neutron, elastic Compton scatt…
We present the solution of the Poincare-covariant Faddeev equation for the Delta(1232) and Omega(1672) baryons. The covariant structure of the corresponding baryon amplitudes and their decomposition in terms of internal spin and orbital angular momentum is explicitly derived. The interaction kernel is truncated to a rainbow-ladder dressed-gluon exchange such that chiral symmetry and its dynamical breaking are correctly implemented. The resulting physical masses agree reasonably with experiment and their evolution with the pion mass compares favorably with lattice calculations. Evidence for the…
We investigate medium effects due to density-dependent magnetic moments of baryons on neutron stars under strong magnetic fields. If we allow the variation of anomalous magnetic moments (AMMs) of baryons in dense matter under strong magnetic fields, AMMs of nucleons are enhanced to be larger than those of hyperons. The enhancement naturally affects the chemical potentials of baryons to be large and leads to the increase of a proton fraction. Consequently, it causes the suppression of hyperons, resulting in the stiffness of the equation of state. Under the presumed strong magnetic fields, we ev…
The deconfinement phase transition from hadronic matter to quark matter in the interior of compact stars is investigated. The hadronic phase is described in the framework of relativistic mean-field (RMF) theory, when also the scalar-isovector delta-meson effective field is taken into account. The MIT bag model for describing a quark phase is used. The changes of the parameters of phase transition caused by the presence of delta-meson field are explored. Finally, alterations in the integral and structural parameters of hybrid stars due to both deconfinement phase transition and inclusion of del…
We study baryons as three-body systems using the QCD degrees of freedom in the framework of covariant Bethe-Salpeter equations. The interaction among quarks is reduced to a vector-vector interaction via a single dressed-gluon exchange (Rainbow-Ladder truncation). The formalism allows for the study of the hadron spectrum as well as their internal properties. We will present the calculation of electromagnetic properties of spin-3/2 baryons. The model independent features of our results are assessed using two different models for the dressings.
We consider the effect of the transitions $n \to Δ^{0}$ and $p \to Δ^{+}$ in deep inelastic scattering on polarized $^3$He on the extraction of the neutron spin structure function $g_{1}^{n}(x,Q^2)$. Making the natural assumption that these transitions are the dominant non-nucleonic contributions to the renormalization of the axial vector coupling constant in the A=3 system, we find that the effect of $Δ$ increases $g_{1}^{n}(x,Q^2)$ by $10 ÷40$% in the range $0.05 \le x \le 0.6$, where our considerations are applicable and most of the data for $g_{1}^{n}(x,Q^2)$ exist.
In this talk, we report the theoretical studies of baryon resonances for the gamma p ---> K*0 Sigma+ and gamma p ---> K*+ Sigma0 reaction processes by making use of the effective Lagrangian method in the tree-level Born approximation. The numerical results for the total and differential cross sections are shown with the presently available data. It turns out that the contributions from the N* and Delta* resonances are almost negligible near the threshold energy. On the other hand, the effects of the K exchange in the t channel and Delta(1232) in the s channel are considerably larger than other…
In the framework of the relativistic mean-field theory, we have considered the equation of state of superdense nuclear matter, taking into account an effective scalar-isovector delta-meson field. The effect of the delta-meson field on the characteristics of a Maxwell-type quark phase transition has been studied. The quark phase is described with the aid of the improved version of the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) bag model, in which interactions between the u, d, s quarks inside the bag are taken into account in the one-gluon exchange approximation. For different values of the ba…
New astrophysical instruments such as skA (square kilometer Array) and IXO (formerly Constellation X) promise the discovery of tens of thousands of new isolated rotating neutron stars (pulsars), neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs), and soft gamma repeaters (SGRs). Many of these neutron stars will experience dramatic density changes over their active lifetimes, driven by either stellar spin-up or spin-down, which may trigger phase transitions in their dense baryonic cores. More than that, accretion of matter onto neutron stars in LMXBs is believed to…
For neutron stars with hyperon-mixed core, neutrino emissivity is studied under the equation of state, obtained by introducing repulsive three-body force universal for all baryons so as to assure the maximum mass compatible with the observation. By paying attention to the density-dependence of critical temperatures of baryon superfluids, which reflect the nature of baryon-baryon interaction and control neutron star cooling, we show what neutrino emission processes are efficient in the regions with and without hyperon mixing and remark its implications related to neutron star cooling.
Baryon and quark superfluidity in the cooling of neutron stars are investigated. Observations could constrain combinations of the neutron or Lambda-hyperon pairing gaps and the star's mass. However, in a hybrid star with a mixed phase of hadrons and quarks, quark gaps larger than a few tenths of an MeV render quark matter virtually invisible for cooling. If the quark gap is smaller, quark superfluidity could be important, but its effects will be nearly impossible to distinguish from those of other baryonic constituents.
Quark-model hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions by the Kyoto-Niigata group are applied to the two-Lambda plus alpha system in a new three-cluster Faddeev formalism using two-cluster resonating-group method kernels. The model fss2 gives a reasonable two-Lambda separation energy Delta B_{Lambda Lambda}=1.41 MeV, which is consistent with the recent empirical value, Delta B^{exp}_{Lambda Lambda}=1.01 +/- 0.20 MeV, deduced from the Nagara event. Some important effects that are not taken into account in the present calculation are discussed.
We study photoproduction reactions for Theta^+, which was recently observed as a candidate of an exotic five quark state uudd(bar s). We employ effective lagrangian interactions in the linear and non-linear formalism of chiral symmetry and investigate two cases of spin and parity of Theta^+, J^P = 1/2^+ and 1/2^-. We calculate cross sections and discuss possibilities to discriminate one from the other.
The equation of state for neutron matter is calculated within relativistic Hartree-Fock approximation. The tensor couplings of vector mesons to baryons are included, and the change of baryon internal structure in matter is also considered using the quark-meson coupling model. We obtain the maximum neutron-star mass of $\sim 2.0 M_\odot$, which is consistent with the recently observed, precise mass, $1.97\pm0.04 M_{\odot}$. The Fock contribution is very important and, in particular, the inclusion of tensor coupling is vital to obtain such large mass. The baryon structure variation in matter als…
The reaction pi N -> pi pi N is studied at tree level up to next-to-leading order in the framework of manifestly covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with explicit Delta(1232) degrees of freedom. Using total cross section data to determine the relevant low-energy constants, predictions are made for various differential as well as total cross sections at higher energies. A detailed comparison of results based on the heavy-baryon and relativistic formulations of chiral perturbation theory with and without explicit Delta degrees of freedom is given.
The low-energy breakup differential cross sections of the neutron-deuteron (nd) scattering are studied by employing the energy-independent version of the quark-model baryon-baryon interaction fss2. This interaction reproduces almost all the breakup differential cross sections predicted by the meson-exchange potentials for the neutron incident energies $E_n \leq$ 65 MeV. The space star anomaly of 13 MeV nd scattering is not improved even in our model. Some overestimation of the breakup differential cross sections at $E_n$=22.7 - 65 MeV implies that systematic studies of various breakup configur…
Exotic new particles carrying baryon number and with mass of order the nucleon mass have been proposed for various reasons including baryogenesis, dark matter, mirror worlds, and the neutron lifetime puzzle. We show that the existence of neutron stars with mass greater than 0.7 $M_\odot$ places severe constraints on such particles, requiring them to be heavier than 1.2 GeV or to have strongly repulsive self-interactions.
A quark model relation between the neutron charge form factor and the N->Delta charge quadrupole form factor is used to predict the C2/M1 ratio in the N->Delta transition from the elastic neutron form factor data. Excellent agreement with the electro-pionproduction data is found, indicating the validity of the suggested relation. The implication of the negative C2/M1 ratio for the intrinsic deformation of the nucleon is discussed.
The neutron-deuteron (nd) scattering is solved in the Faddeev formalism, employing the energy-independent version of the quark-model baryon-baryon interaction fss2. The differential cross sections and the spin polarization of the elastic scattering up to the neutron incident energy $E_n=65$ MeV are well reproduced without reinforcing fss2 with the three-body force. The vector analyzing-power of the neutron, $A_y(θ)$, in the energy region $E_n$ < 25 MeV is largely improved in comparison with the predictions by the meson-exchange potentials, thus yielding a partial solution of the long-standing …
