Black holes play a crucial role in the understanding of the gravitational interaction. Through the direct observation of the shadow of a black hole by the event horizon telescope and the detection of gravitational waves of merging black holes we now start to have direct access to their properties and behaviour, which means the properties and behaviour of gravity. This further raised the demand for models to compare with those observations. In this respect, an important question regarding black holes properties is to know if they can support "hairs". While this is famously forbidden in general relativity, in particular for scalar fields, by the so-called no-hair theorems, hairy black holes have been shown to exist in several class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity. In this article we investigate the existence of scalarized black holes in scalar-torsion theories of gravity. On one hand, we find exact solutions for certain choices of couplings between a scalar field and the torsion tensor of a teleparallel connection and certain scalar field potentials, and thus proof the existence of scalarized black holes in these theories. On the other hand, we show that it is possible to establish no-scalar-hair theorems similar to what is known in general relativity for other choices of these functions.
We report on a numerical investigation of the stability of scalarized black holes in Einstein dilaton Gauss-Bonnet (EdGB) gravity in the full dynamical theory, though restricted to spherical symmetry. We find evidence that for sufficiently small curvature-couplings the resulting scalarized black hole solutions are nonlinearly stable. For such small couplings, we show that an elliptic region forms inside these EdGB black hole spacetimes (prior to any curvature singularity), and give evidence that this region remains censored from asymptotic view. However, for coupling values "superextremal" rel…
Scalar-tensor theories of gravity where a new scalar degree of freedom couples to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant can exhibit the phenomenon of spontaneous black hole scalarization. These theories admit both the classic black holes predicted by general relativity as well as novel hairy black hole solutions. The stability of the hairy black holes is strongly dependent on the precise form of the scalar-gravity coupling. A radial stability investigation revealed that all scalarized black hole solutions are unstable when the coupling between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant is quadratic …

Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity has recently been known to exhibit spontaneous scalarization. In the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term the no-hair theorem can be evaded and novel black hole solutions with non-trivial scalar fields have been found besides the general relativistic solutions. In this paper, we aim to investigate the possibility of observationally testing Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity using thin accretion disk properties around such scalarized black holes. Using the Novikov-Thorne model, we numerically calculate the electromagnetic flux, temperature distribution, emiss…
We have discovered a new type of scalarized charged black holes in a surprisingly simple system: an Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon field theory where the three fields couple non-minimally through a Horndeski vector-tensor term. In addition to hairy charged black holes, this system exhibits Horndeski-Reissner-Nordstrom solutions and ordinary Reissner-Nordstrom ones which bifurcate to the scalarized solutions. There exist also vector-tensor black hole solutions which possess central curvature singularities although their metric components are finite there, and also solutions with naked singularit…
In the present paper, we construct spontaneously scalarized rotating black hole solutions in dynamical Chern-Simons (dCS) gravity by following the scalar field evolution in the decoupling limit. For the range of parameters where the Kerr black hole becomes unstable within dCS gravity the scalar field grows exponentially until it reaches an equilibrium configuration that is independent of the initial perturbation. Interestingly, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry of the scalar field is broken and a strong maximum around only one of the rotational axes can be observed. The black hole scalar charge is c…
In the present paper, we numerically construct new non-topological, spontaneously scalarized neutron stars in the tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity whose target space is a three-dimensional maximally symmetric space, namely either $\mathbb{S}^3$, $\mathbb{H}^3$ or $\mathbb{R}^3$, and in the case of a nontrivial map $φ: \text{\it spacetime} \to \text{\it target space}$. The theories of gravity admitting scalarization are characterized by the fact that the field equations always admit the general relativistic solution but for certain ranges of the parameters space it loses stability and no…
Recently, a new nonlinear mechanism for black hole scalarization, different from the standard spontaneous scalarization, was demonstrated to exist for scalar Gauss-Bonnet theories in which no tachyonic instabilities can occur. Thus Schwarzschild black hole is linearly stable but instead nonlinear instability can kick-in. In the present paper we extend on this idea in the case of multi-scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity with exponential coupling functions of third and fourth leading order in the scalar field. The main motivation comes from the fact that these theories admit hairy compact objects with …
In this paper, we study static and spherically symmetric black hole (BH) solutions in the scalar-tensor theories with the coupling of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term $ξ(ϕ) R_{\rm GB}$, where $R_{\rm GB}:=R^2-4R^{αβ}R_{αβ}+R^{αβμν}R_{αβμν}$ is the GB invariant and $ξ(ϕ)$ is a function of the scalar field $ϕ$. Recently, it was shown that in these theories scalarized static and spherically symmetric BH solutions which are different from the Schwarzschild solution and possess the nontrivial profiles of the scalar field can be realized for certain choices of the coupling functions an…
The vector-tensor Horndeski theory is supplemented by a real, massless scalar field non-minimally coupled to the Horndeski interaction term. The generic dyonic Reissner-Nordstrom solutions characterized by electric and magnetic charges, acquire an instability and bifurcate into electromagnetically charged solutions presenting an horizon and a cloud of scalar hairs at specific values of the non-minimal coupling constant. These hairy black holes are studied in terms of the physical parameters of the model and the critical phenomena limiting their domain of existence are discussed.
We consider f(R) gravity theories in the presence of a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity with a self-interacting potential. When the scalar field backreacts to the metric we find at large distances scalarized Schwarzschild-AdS and Schwarzschild-AdS-like black hole solutions. At small distances due to strong curvature effects and the scalar dynamis we find a rich structure of scalarized black hole solutions. When the scalar field is conformally coupled to gravity we also find scalarized black hole solutions at small distances.
Gauge symmetries in teleparallel gravity, together with the identities among the dynamical equations they provide, are analyzed in relation to the way they condition the coupling between matter and gravity. Particularly, the coupling of fermionic matter seems to be excluded in a wide range of teleparallel theories.
We review the current status of the Lorentz covariance in teleparallel and modified teleparallel theories of gravity, and discuss the controversial features of the different approaches. We also revisit the issue of the remnant Lorentz gauge symmetries in $f(T)$ gravity.
There is a growing interest in modified gravity theories based on torsion, as these theories exhibit interesting cosmological implications. In this work, inspired by the teleparallel formulation of general relativity, we present its extension to Lovelock gravity known as the most natural extension of general relativity in higher-dimensional space-times. First, we review the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity and Gauss-Bonnet gravity, and then we construct the teleparallel equivalent of Lovelock gravity. In order to achieve this goal we use the vielbein and the connection without imp…
A 2D symmetric teleparallel gravity model is given by a generic 4-parameter action that is quadratic in the non-metricity tensor. Variational field equations are derived. A class of conformally flat solutions is given. We also discuss static and cosmological solutions.
We study dynamics of generalized tachyon scalar field in the framework of teleparallel gravity. This model is an extension of tachyonic teleparallel dark energy model which has been proposed in [26]. In contrast with tachyonic teleparallel dark energy model that has no scaling attractors, here we find some scaling attractors which means that the cosmological coincidence problem can be alleviated. Scaling attractors present for both interacting and non-interacting dark energy, dark matter cases.
We construct a Weyl transverse diffeomorphism invariant theory of symmetric teleparallel gravity by employing the Weyl compensator formalism. The low-energy dynamics has a single spin two gravition without a scalar degree of freedom. By construction, it is equivalent to the unimodular gravity (as well as the Einstein gravity) at the non-linear level.
In a certain class of scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, the black holes and the neutron stars can undergo spontaneous scalarization -- a strong gravity phase transition triggered by a tachyonic instability due to the nonminimal coupling between the scalar field and the spacetime curvature. Studies of this phenomenon have, so far, been restricted mainly to the study of the tachyonic instability and stationary scalarized black holes and neutron stars. To date, no realistic physical mechanism for the formation of isolated scalarized black holes and neutron stars has been proposed. We study, for the fi…
We consider the problem of IR divergences of the action in the covariant formulation of teleparallel gravity in asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes. We show that divergences are caused by inertial effects and can be removed by adding an appropriate surface term, leading to the renormalized action. This process can be viewed as a teleparallel analogue of holographic renormalization. Moreover, we explore the variational problem in teleparallel gravity and explain how the variation with respect to the spin connection should be performed.
We consider the cosmology of a brane-world scenario in the framework of teleparallel and $f(T)$ gravity in a way that matter is localized on the brane. We show that the cosmology of such branes is different from the standard cosmology in teleparallelism. In particular, we obtain a class of new solutions with a constant five-dimensional radius and cosmologically evolving brane in the context of constant torsion $f(T)$ gravity.
In the present paper we construct novel non-topological, spontaneously scalarized neutron stars in multi-scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity with maximally symmetric target space, and nontrivial map $φ:spacetime \rightarrow target\ space$. The theory is characterized by the fact that for some classes of coupling functions the field equations allow solutions with trivial scalar field, which coincide with the general relativistic ones. For a certain range of parameters those solutions lose stability and new branches of solutions with nontrivial scalar field bifurcate from the trivial branch. For a given…
Teleparallel theory of gravity and its modifications have been studied extensively in literature. However, gravitational waves has not been studied enough in the framework of teleparallelism. In the present study, we discuss gravitational waves in general theories of teleparallel gravity containing the torsion scalar $T$, the boundary term $B$ and a scalar field $ϕ$. The goal is to classify possible new polarizations generalizing results presented in Ref.[15]. We show that, if the boundary term is minimally coupled to the torsion scalar and the scalar field, gravitational waves have the same p…
We consider the quantization of matter fields in a background described by the teleparallel equivalent to general relativity. The presence of local Lorentz and gauge symmetries gives rise to different coupling prescriptions, which we analyse separately. As expected, quantum matter fields produce divergences that cannot be absorbed by terms in the background action of teleparallel equivalent to general relativity. Nonetheless, the formulation of teleparallel gravity allows one to find out the source of the problem. By imposing local Lorentz invariance after quantization, we show that a modified…
Teleparallel gravity and its popular generalization $f(T)$ gravity can be formulated as fully invariant (under both coordinate transformations and local Lorentz transformations) theories of gravity. Several misconceptions about teleparallel gravity and its generalizations can be found in the literature, especially regarding their local Lorentz invariance. We describe how these misunderstandings may have arisen and attempt to clarify the situation. In particular, the central point of confusion in the literature appears to be related to the inertial spin connection in teleparallel gravity models…
The basics of teleparallel gravity and its extensions are reviewed with particular emphasis on the problem of Lorentz-breaking choice of connection in pure-tetrad versions of the theories. Various possible ways to covariantise such models are discussed. A by-product is a new form of $f(T)$ field equations.
We study teleparallel gravity in five-dimensional spacetime with particular discussions on Kaluza-Klein (KK) and braneworld theories. We directly perform the dimensional reduction by differential forms. In the braneworld theory, the teleparallel gravity formalism in the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmology is equivalent to GR due to the same Friedmann equation, whereas in the KK case the reduction of our formulation does not recover the effect as GR of 4-dimensional spacetime.
We discuss conformal issues of pure and extended teleparallel gravity. In particular, we present formulations of conformal transformation in teleparallel gravity. Furthermore, we propose conformal scalar and gauge field theories in teleparallel gravity and study conformal torsion gravity. We explicitly demonstrate that a power-law acceleration (including the $Λ$CDM universe) as well as the de Sitter expansion of the universe can be realized in extended teleparallel gravity with a conformal scalar field, and that pure teleparallel gravity with a conformal scalar field can lead to the $Λ$CDM mod…
Generalised Proca theories of gravity represent an interesting class of vector-tensor theories where only three propagating degrees of freedom are present. In this work, we propose a new teleparallel gravity analog to Proca theories where the generalised Proca framework is extended due to the lower order nature of torsion based gravity. We develop a new action contribution and explore the example of the Friedmann equations in this regime. We find that teleparallel Proca theories offer the possibility of a much larger class of models in which do have an impact on background cosmology.
In this work we use the theory of Teleparallelism Equivalent to General Relativity based in non-commutative space-time coordinates. In this context, we write the corrections of the Schwarzschild solution. As a important result, we find the corrections of the gravitational energy in the realm of teleparallel gravity due to the non-commutativity of space-time. Then we interpret such corrections as a manifestation of quantum theory in gravitational field.
Black holes represent outstanding astrophysical laboratories to test the strong gravity regime, since alternative theories of gravity may predict black hole solutions whose may differ distinctly from those of General Relativity. When higher curvature terms are included in the gravitational action as, for instance, in the form of the Gauss-Bonnet term coupled to a scalar field, scalarized black holes result. Here we discuss several types of scalarized black holes and some of their properties.
We study gauge properties of the general teleparallel theory of gravity, defined in the framework of Poincare gauge theory. It is found that the general theory is characterized by two kinds of gauge symmetries: a specific gauge symmetry that acts on Lagrange multipliers, and the standard Poincare gauge symmetry. The canonical generators of these symmetries are explicitly constructed and investigated.
We study logamediate inflation in the context of $f(T)$ teleparallel gravity. $f(T)$-gravity is a generalization of the teleparallel gravity which is formulated on the Weitzenböck spacetime, characterized by the vanishing curvature tensor (absolute parallelism) and the non-vanishing torsion tensor. We consider an $f(T)$-gravity model which is sourced by a canonical scalar field. Assuming a power-law $f(T)$ function in the action, we investigate an inflationary universe with a logamediate scale factor. Our results show that, although logamediate inflation is completely ruled out by observationa…
Symmetric teleparallel gravity is constructed with a nonzero nonmetricity tensor while both torsion and curvature are vanishing. In this framework, we find exact scalarised spherically symmetric static solutions in scalar-tensor theories built with a nonminimal coupling between the nonmetricity scalar and a scalar field. It turns out that the Bocharova-Bronnikov-Melnikov-Bekenstein solution has a symmetric teleparallel analogue (in addition to the recently found metric teleparallel analogue), while some other of these solutions describe scalarised black hole configurations that are not known i…
Teleparallel geometry offers a platform on which to build up theories of gravity where torsion rather than curvature mediates gravitational interaction. The teleparallel analogue of Horndeski gravity is an approach to teleparallel geometry where scalar-tensor theories are considered in this torsional framework. Being teleparallel gravity of lower order in dynamics, this turns out to be more general than metric Horndeski gravity. In other words, the class of teleparallel Horndeski gravity models is much broader than the standard metric one. In this work, we explore constraints on this wide rang…
It is well known that one cannot apply a conformal transformation to $f(T)$ gravity to obtain a minimally coupled scalar field model, and thus no Einstein frame exists for $f(T)$ gravity. Furthermore nonminimally coupled "teleparallel dark energy models" are not conformally equivalent to $f(T)$ gravity. However, it can be shown that $f(T)$ gravity is conformally equivalent to a teleparallel phantom scalar field model with a nonminimal coupling to a boundary term only. In this work, we extend this analysis by considering a recently studied extended class of models, known as $f(T,B)$ gravity, wh…
Recently, a new choice of variables was identified to understand how the quantum group structure appeared in three-dimensional gravity [1]. These variables are introduced via a canonical transformation generated by a boundary term. We show that this boundary term can actually be taken to be the volume of the boundary and that the new variables can be defined in any dimension greater than three. In addition, we study the associated metric and teleparallel formalisms. The former is a variant of the Henneaux--Teitelboim model for unimodular gravity. The latter provides a non-Abelian generalizatio…
Symmetric teleparallel gravity (STG) is an alternative description of the gravitational field as an effect of the nonmetricity rather than the curvature of the spacetime. For an specific choice of the symmetric teleparallel lagrangian, the STG dynamics is equivalent to the general relativity (GR), and it is called Symmetric teleparallel equivalent to general relativity (STEGR). We propose a local Lorentz violating dynamics in the gravitational sector in the STEGR framework. The Lorentz violation is trigged by the vacuum expectation value (vev) of the well-known bumblebee field, whose vev coupl…
Born-Infeld strategy to smooth theories having divergent solutions is applied to teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity. Differing from other theories of modified gravity, modified teleparallelism leads to second order equations, since teleparallel Lagrangian only contains first derivatives of the vierbein. We show that Born-Infeld-modified teleparallelism solves the particle horizon problem in a spatially flat FRW universe by providing an initial exponential expansion without resorting to an inflaton field.
Cosmological perturbations are considered in $f(T)$ and in scalar-torsion $f(φ)T$ teleparallel models of gravity. Full sets of linear perturbation equations are accurately derived and analysed at the relevant limits. Interesting features of generalisations to other teleparallel models, spatially curved backgrounds, and rotated tetrads are pointed out.
We study teleparallel gravity in the \emph{original} Kaluza-Klein (KK) scenario. Our calculation of the KK reduction of teleparallel gravity indicates that the 5-dimensional torsion scalar $^{(5)}T$ generates the non-Brans-Dicke type effective Lagrangian in 4-dimension due to an additional coupling between the derivative of the scalar field and torsion, but the result is equivalent to that in general relativity. We also discuss the cosmological behavior in the FLRW universe based on the effective teleparallel gravity.
We study the conservation laws associated with the asymptotic Poincare symmetry of spacetime in the general teleparallel theory of gravity. Demanding that the canonical Poincare generators have well defined functional derivatives in a properly defined phase space, we obtain the improved form of the generators, containing certain surface terms. These terms are shown to represent the values of the related conserved charges: energy-momentum and angular momentum.
During the conference "Teleparallel Universes in Salamanca", we became aware of a recent paper [M. Fontanini, E. Huguet, and M. Le Delliou, Phys. Rev. D 99 (2019) 064006] in which some criticisms on the interpretation of teleparallel gravity as a gauge theory for the translation group were put forward. This triggered a discussion about the arguments on which those criticisms were based, whose output is described in the present paper. The main conclusion is that, to a great extent, those arguments are incorrect, and lack mathematical and physical support.
We study conditions on a generic connection written in terms of first-order derivatives of the vielbein in order to obtain (possible) equivalent theories to Einstein Gravity. We derive the equations of motion for these theories which are based on the new connections. We recover the Teleparallel Gravity equations of motion as a particular case. The analysis of this work might be useful to Double Field Theory to find other connections determined in terms of the physical fields.
It was recently shown, that in a class of tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity with a nontrivial target space metric, there exist scalarized neutron star solutions. An important property of these compact objects is that the scalar charge is zero and therefore, the binary pulsar experiments can not impose constraints based on the absence of scalar dipole radiation. Moreover, the structure of the solutions is very complicated. For a fixed central energy density up to three neutron star solutions can exist -- one general relativistic and two scalarized, that is quite different from the scalari…
We analyze the relation between teleparallelism and local Lorentz invariance. We show that generic modifications of the teleparallel equivalent to general relativity will not respect local Lorentz symmetry. We clarify the reasons for this and explain why the situation is different in general relativity. We give a prescription for constructing teleparallel equivalents for known theories. We also explicitly consider a recently proposed class of generalized teleparallel theories, called f(T) theories of gravity, and show why restoring local Lorentz symmetry in such theories cannot lead to sensibl…
We consider quantum gravity model with the squared curvature action. We construct lattice discretization of the model (both on hypercubic and simplicial lattices) starting from its teleparallel equivalent. The resulting lattice models have the actions that are bounded from below while Einstein equations (without matter) appear in their classical limit.
We discuss linear perturbations of the most general class of teleparallel spacetimes with cosmological symmetry, and perform a decomposition of these perturbations into irreducible components. We then study their behavior under gauge transformations, i.e., infinitesimal diffeomorphisms of the background spacetime, and derive a full set of gauge-invariant perturbation variables. Comparing our results with perturbations around the diagonal tetrad corresponding to a spatially flat teleparallel background cosmology, we see the appearance of new terms which depend on the particular choice of a cosm…
In the context of extended Teleparallel gravity theories with a 3+1 dimensions Gauss-Bonnet analog term, we address the possibility of these theories reproducing several well-known cosmological solutions. In particular when applied to a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker geometry in four-dimensional spacetime with standard fluids exclusively. We study different types of gravitational Lagrangians and reconstruct solutions provided by analytical expressions for either the cosmological scale factor or the Hubble parameter. We also show that it is possible to find Lagrangians of this type without…
