In this paper, we deal with two classes of Diophantine equations, $x^2+y^2+z^2+k_1yz+k_2zx+k_3xy=(3+k_1+k_2+k_3)xyz$ and $x^2+y^4+z^4+ky^2z^2+2xz^2+2xy^2=(7+k)xy^2z^2$, where $k_1,k_2,k_3,k$ are nonnegative integers. The former is known as the Markov Diophantine equation if $k_1=k_2=k_3=0$, and the latter is a Diophantine equation recently studied by Lampe if $k=0$. We give algorithms to enumerate all positive integer solutions to these equations, and discuss the structures of the generalized cluster algebras behind them.
We propose an equivalent condition for the Markov triples, which was mentioned by H. Rademacher essentially. As an application, we study the solvability of the Diophantine equation $a^2+b^2+c^2=abcf(a,b,c)$.
This text is a slightly expanded version of a survey article on certain aspects of low dimensional dynamics and number theory written after a kind invitation by the editors of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society.
Markov's theorem classifies the worst irrational numbers with respect to rational approximation and the indefinite binary quadratic forms whose values for integer arguments stay farthest away from zero. The main purpose of this paper is to present a new proof of Markov's theorem using hyperbolic geometry. The main ingredients are a dictionary to translate between hyperbolic geometry and algebra/number theory, and some very basic tools borrowed from modern geometric Teichmüller theory. Simple closed geodesics and ideal triangulations of the modular torus play an important role, and so do the pr…
Balancing and Lucas-balancing numbers are solutions of a Diophantine equation and satisfy a second order homogeneous recurrence relation. Interestingly, these numbers can be seen as numerators and denominators in the steady state probabilities of a class of transition probability matrices of Markov chains. An identity relating the balancing numbers and the silver ratio can be obtained as a byproduct.
The continuous version of a fundamental result of Khinchin says that a half-infinite torus line in the unit square $[0,1]^2$ exhibits superdensity, which is a best form of time-quantitative density, if and only if the slope of the geodesic is a badly approximable number. In this paper, we give a proof of the extension of this result of Khinchin to the case when the unit torus $[0,1]^2$ is replaced by a finite polysquare surface, or square tiled surface. The argument is based on diophantine approximation and continued fractions, traditional tools in number theory. In particular, we use the famo…
Markov numbers are integers that appear in the solution triples of the Diophantine equation, $x^2+y^2+z^2=3xyz$, called the Markov equation. A classical topic in number theory, these numbers are related to many areas of mathematics such as combinatorics, hyperbolic geometry, approximation theory and cluster algebras. There is a natural map from the rational numbers between zero and one to the Markov numbers. In this paper, we prove two conjectures seen in Martin Aigner's book, Markov's theorem and 100 years of the uniqueness conjecture, that determine an ordering on subsets of the Markov numbe…
The Markov numbers are the positive integer solutions of the Diophantine equation $x^2 + y^2 + z^2 = 3xyz$. Already in 1880, Markov showed that all these solutions could be generated along a binary tree. So it became quite usual (and useful) to index the Markov numbers by the rationals between 0 and 1 which stand at the same place in the Stern-Brocot binary tree. The Frobenius conjecture claims that each Markov number appears at most once in the tree. In particular, if the conjecture is true, the order of Markov numbers would establish a new strict order on the rationals. Aigner suggested thre…
Building on previous work of Di Nasso and Luperi Baglini, we provide general necessary conditions for a Diophantine equation to be partition regular. These conditions are inspired by Rado's characterization of partition regular linear homogeneous equations. We conjecture that these conditions are also sufficient for partition regularity, at least for equations whose corresponding monovariate polynomial is linear. This would provide a natural generalization of Rado's theorem. We verify that such a conjecture hold for the equations $x^{2}-xy+ax+by+cz=0$ and $x^{2}-y^{2}+ax+by+cz=0$ for $a,b,c\in…
In this paper, we generalize the Markov triples in two different directions. One is generalization in direction of using the $q$-deformation of rational number introduced by \cite{MO} in connection with cluster algebras, quantum topology and analytic number theory. The other is direction using castling transforms of prehomogeneous vector spaces \cite{SaKi} which plays an important role in the study of representation theory and automorphic function. In addition, the present paper gives a relationship between the two generalizations. This may provide some kind of bridging between different field…
Markov numbers are integers that appear in triples which are solutions of a Diophantine equation, the so-called Markov cubic $$x^2 + y^2 + z^2 - 3x y z = 0.$$ A classical topic in number theory, these numbers are related to many areas of mathematics such as combinatorics, hyperbolic geometry, approximation theory and cluster algebras. One can associate to each a positive rational number a Markov number in a natural way. We give a new unified proof of certain conjectures from Martin Aigner's book, Markov's Theorem and 100 Years of the Uniqueness Conjecture. Our proof relies on a relationship be…
Recently Valentin Ovsienko introduced a ``shadow" version of the celebrated Markov triples as the solutions of certain version of Markov equation over dual numbers. We will discuss similar question for the Mordell Diophantine equation $$ X^2+Y^2+Z^2=2XYZ+1. $$ We will see that the shadows of the special solution $(1,1,1)$ can be described using the original Conway topograph of the values of binary quadratic forms. The shadows of other Mordell triples will be written explicitly in terms of the corresponding solutions of Pell's equation. Their growth along the paths on the Conway topograph is de…
