We compute recursive approximations of the action of the height $h \geq 2$ Morava stabilizer group on the associated Lubin-Tate deformation ring. We then specialize to the case $h=3$ and $p>2$ to calculate the action explicitly. These results are new for $h>2$ and agree with computations by Lader at height $h=2$.
We completely compute the slice spectral sequence of the $C_4$-spectrum $BP^{((C_4))}\langle 2 \rangle$. After periodization and $K(4)$-localization, this spectrum is equivalent to a height-4 Lubin-Tate theory $E_4$ with $C_4$-action induced from the Goerss-Hopkins-Miller theorem. In particular, our computation shows that $E_4^{hC_{12}}$ is 384-periodic.
We study certain formal group laws equipped with an action of the cyclic group of order a power of $2$. We construct $C_{2^n}$-equivariant Real oriented models of Lubin-Tate spectra $E_h$ at heights $h=2^{n-1}m$ and give explicit formulas of the $C_{2^n}$-action on their coefficient rings. Our construction utilizes equivariant formal group laws associated with the norms of the Real bordism theory $MU_{\mathbb{R}}$, and our work examines the height of the formal group laws of the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norms of $MU_{\mathbb{R}}$.
We show, at the prime 2, that the Picard group of invertible modules over $E_n^{hC_2}$ is cyclic. Here, $E_n$ is the height $n$ Lubin--Tate spectrum and its $C_2$-action is induced from the formal inverse of its associated formal group law. We further show that $E_n^{hC_2}$ is Gross--Hopkins self-dual and determine the exact shift. Our results generalize the well-known results when $n = 1$.
We show that Lubin--Tate theories attached to algebraically closed fields are characterized among $T(n)$-local $\mathbb{E}_{\infty}$-rings as those that satisfy an analogue of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz. Furthermore, we show that for every $T(n)$-local $\mathbb{E}_{\infty}$-ring $R$, the collection of $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring maps from $R$ to such Lubin-Tate theories jointly detect nilpotence. In particular, we deduce that every non-zero $T(n)$-local $\mathbb{E}_{\infty}$-ring $R$ admits an $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring map to such a Lubin-Tate theory. As consequences, we construct $\mathbb{E}_{\inf…
In their work on the period map and the dualizing sheaf for Lubin-Tate space, Gross and the second author wrote down an equivalence between the Spanier-Whitehead and Brown-Comenetz duals of certain type $n$-complexes in the $K(n)$-local category at large primes. In the culture of the time, these results were accessible to educated readers, but this seems no longer to be the case; therefore, in this note we give the details. Because we are at large primes, the key result is algebraic: in the Picard group of Lubin-Tate space, two important invertible sheaves become isomorphic modulo $p$.
Following an idea of Hopkins, we construct a model of the determinant sphere $S\langle det \rangle$ in the category of $K(n)$-local spectra. To do this, we build a spectrum which we call the Tate sphere $S(1)$. This is a $p$-complete sphere with a natural continuous action of $\mathbb{Z}_p^\times$. The Tate sphere inherits an action of $\mathbb{G}_n$ via the determinant and smashing Morava $E$-theory with $S(1)$ has the effect of twisting the action of $\mathbb{G}_n$. A large part of this paper consists of analyzing continuous $\mathbb{G}_n$-actions and their homotopy fixed points in the setup…
We study transchromatic phenomena for the Tate construction of Real oriented cohomology theories. First, we show that after suitable completion, the Tate construction with respect to a trivial $\mathbb{Z}/2$-action on height $n$ Real Johnson--Wilson theory splits into a wedge of height $n-1$ Real Johnson--Wilson theories. This is the first example of Tate blueshift at all chromatic heights outside of the complex oriented setting. Second, we prove that the Tate construction with respect to a trivial finite group action on Real Morava K-theory vanishes, refining a classical Tate vanishing result…
We compute the rational homotopy groups of the $K(n)$-local sphere for all heights $n$ and all primes $p$, verifying a prediction that goes back to the pioneering work of Morava in the early 1970s. More precisely, we show that the inclusion of the Witt vectors into the Lubin-Tate ring induces a split injection on continuous stabilizer cohomology with torsion cokernel of bounded exponent, thereby proving Hopkins' chromatic splitting conjecture and the vanishing conjecture of Beaudry-Goerss-Henn rationally. The key ingredients are the equivalence between the Lubin-Tate tower and the Drinfeld tow…
We calculate the homotopy type of $L_1L_{K(2)}S^0$ and $L_{K(1)}L_{K(2)}S^0$ at the prime 2, where $L_{K(n)}$ is localization with respect to Morava $K$-theory and $L_1$ localization with respect to $2$-local $K$ theory. In $L_1L_{K(2)}S^0$ we find all the summands predicted by the Chromatic Splitting Conjecture, but we find some extra summands as well. An essential ingredient in our approach is the analysis of the continuous group cohomology $H^\ast_c(\mathbb{G}_2,E_0)$ where $\mathbb{G}_2$ is the Morava stabilizer group and $E_0 = \mathbb{W}[[u_1]]$ is the ring of functions on the height $2$…
We study the orientability of vector bundles with respect to a family of cohomology theories called $\mathrm{EO}$-theories. The $\mathrm{EO}$-theories are higher height analogues of real $\mathrm{K}$-theory $\mathrm{KO}$. For each $\mathrm{EO}$-theory, we prove that the direct sum of $i$ copies of any vector bundle is $\mathrm{EO}$-orientable for some specific integer $i$. Using a splitting principal, we reduce to the case of the canonical line bundle over $\mathbb{CP}^{\infty}$. Our method involves understanding the action of an order $p$ subgroup of the Morava stabilizer group on the Morava …
