Using the descent spectral sequence for a Galois extension of ring spectra, we compute the Picard group of the higher real $K$-theory spectra of Hopkins and Miller at height $n=p-1$, for $p$ an odd prime. More generally, we determine the Picard groups of the homotopy fixed points spectra $E_n^{hG}$, where $E_n$ is Lubin-Tate $E$-theory at the prime $p$ and height $n=p-1$, and $G$ is any finite subgroup of the extended Morava stabilizer group. We find that these Picard groups are always cyclic, generated by the suspension.
We show, at the prime 2, that the Picard group of invertible modules over $E_n^{hC_2}$ is cyclic. Here, $E_n$ is the height $n$ Lubin--Tate spectrum and its $C_2$-action is induced from the formal inverse of its associated formal group law. We further show that $E_n^{hC_2}$ is Gross--Hopkins self-dual and determine the exact shift. Our results generalize the well-known results when $n = 1$.
We compute the connective spectra of maps from $\mathbb{Z}$ to the Picard spectra of the spherical Witt vectors associated with perfect rings of characteristic $p$. As an application, we determine the connective spectrum of maps from $\mathbb{Z}$ to the Picard spectrum of the sphere spectrum.
We give a calculation of Picard groups of K(2)-local invertible spectra and of E(2)-local invertible spectra, both at the prime 3. The main contribution of this paper is to calculation the subgroup of invertible spectra with the same Morava module as a sphere.
Let $A$ be a cocommutative finite dimensional Hopf algebra over the field with two elements, satisfying some mild hypothesis. We set up a descent spectral sequence which computes the Picard group of the stable category of modules over $A$. The starting point is the observation that the stable category of $A$-modules can be reconstructed, as an $\infty$-category, as the totalization of a cosimplicial $\infty$-category whose layers are related to the stable categories of modules over the quasi-elementary sub-Hopf-algebras of $A$. This leads to a spectral sequence computing the Picard group which…
Let $\mathcal L_n$ for a positive integer $n$ denote the stable homotopy category of $v_n^{-1}BP$-local spectra at a prime number $p$. Then, M.~Hopkins defines the Picard group of $\mathcal L_n$ as a collection of isomorphism classes of invertible spectra, whose exotic summand Pic$^0(\mathcal L_n)$ is studied by several authors. In this paper, we study the summand for $n$ with $n^2\le 2p+2$. For $n^2\le 2p-2$, it consists of invertible spectra whose $K(n)$-localization is the $K(n)$-local sphere. In particular, $X$ is an exotic invertible spectrum of $\cL_n$ if and only if $X\wedge MJ$ is isom…
We compute the Picard group of the category of $K(2)$-local module spectra over the ring spectrum $E^{hC_4}$, where $E$ is a height 2 Morava $E$-theory and $C_4$ is a subgroup of the associated Morava stabilizer group. This group can be identified with the Picard group of $K(2)$-local $E$-modules in genuine $C_4$-spectra. We show that in addition to a cyclic subgroup of order 32 generated by $ E\wedge S^1$ the Picard group contains a subgroup of order 2 generated by $E\wedge S^{7+σ}$, where $σ$ is the sign representation of the group $C_4$. In the process, we completely compute the $RO(C_4)$-g…
We produce first examples of p-local height three TAF homology theories. The corresponding one-dimensional formal groups arise as split summands of the formal groups of certain abelian three-folds, the Shimura variety of which can be reinterpreted as moduli of a family of Picard curves. This allows an explicit description of an automorphic form valued genus in terms of the coefficients of these curves. Moreover, our construction is such that the theories naturally come with restriction maps to TAF theories of lower height.
This paper starts with an exposition of descent-theoretic techniques in the study of Picard groups of $\mathbf{E}_{\infty}$-ring spectra, which naturally lead to the study of Picard spectra. We then develop tools for the efficient and explicit determination of differentials in the associated descent spectral sequences for the Picard spectra thus obtained. As a major application, we calculate the Picard groups of the periodic spectrum of topological modular forms $TMF$ and the non-periodic and non-connective $Tmf$. We find that $\mathrm{Pic} (TMF)$ is cyclic of order 576, generated by the suspe…
We develop a mechanism of "isotropy separation for compact objects" that explicitly describes an invertible $G$-spectrum through its collection of geometric fixed points and gluing data located in certain variants of the stable module category. As an application, we carry out a complete analysis of invertible G-spectra in the case $G=A_5$. A further application is given by showing that the Picard groups of $\mathrm{Sp}^G$ and a category of derived Mackey functors agree.
For a finite group $G$, there is a map $RO(G) \to {\rm Pic}(Sp^G)$ from the real representation ring of $G$ to the Picard group of $G$-spectra. This map is not known to be surjective in general, but we prove that when $G$ is cyclic this map is indeed surjective and in that case we describe ${\rm Pic}(Sp^G)$ explicitly. We also show that for an arbitrary finite group $G$ homology and cohomology with coefficients in a cohomological Mackey functor do not see the part of ${\rm Pic}(Sp^G)$ coming from the Picard group of the Burnside ring. Hence these homology and cohomology calculations can be gra…
We develop a general theory which enables the computation of the Picard group of a symmetric monoidal triangulated category, equipped with a weight structure, in terms of the Picard group of the associated heart. As an application, we compute the Picard group of several categories of motivic nature - mixed Artin motives, mixed Artin-Tate motives, motivic spectra, noncommutative mixed Artin motives, noncommutative mixed motives of central simple algebras, noncommutative mixed motives of separable algebras - as well as the Picard group of the derived categories of symmetric ring spectra.
We calculate the algebraic $K$-theory of the coordinate ring of a planar cuspidal curve over a regular $\mathbb{F}_p$-algebra, thereby verifying a conjecture due to Hesselholt. In the course of the proof we compute the Picard group of the homotopy category of $p$-complete genuine $C_{p^n}$-spectra.
We use descent theoretic methods to solve the homotopy limit problem for Hermitian $K$-theory over quasi-compact and quasi-separated base schemes. As another application of these descent theoretic methods, we compute the cellular Picard group of 2-complete Hermitian $K$-theory over $\mathop{Spec}(\mathbb{C})$, showing that the only invertible cellular spectra are suspensions of the tensor unit.
A structure theorem for bounded-below modules over the subalgebra A(1) of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra generated by Sq^1, Sq^2 is proved; this is applied to prove a classification theorem for a family of indecomposable A(1)-modules. The action of the A(1)-Picard group on this family is described, as is the behaviour of duality. The cohomology of dual Brown-Gitler spectra is identified within this family and the relation with members of the A(1)-Picard group is made explicit. Similarly, the cohomology of truncated projective spaces is considered within this classification; this leads to a concept…
We completely compute the slice spectral sequence of the $C_4$-spectrum $BP^{((C_4))}\langle 2 \rangle$. After periodization and $K(4)$-localization, this spectrum is equivalent to a height-4 Lubin-Tate theory $E_4$ with $C_4$-action induced from the Goerss-Hopkins-Miller theorem. In particular, our computation shows that $E_4^{hC_{12}}$ is 384-periodic.
We show that the real K-theory spectrum KO is Anderson self-dual using the method previously employed in the second author's calculation of the Anderson dual of Tmf. Indeed the current work can be considered as a lower chromatic version of that calculation. Emphasis is given to an algebro-geometric interpretation of this result in spectrally derived algebraic geometry. We finish by applying the result to a calculation of 2-primary Gross-Hopkins duality at height 1, and obtain an independent calculation of the group of exotic elements of the K(1)-local Picard group.
An algebraic criterion, in terms of closure under power operations, is determined for the existence and uniqueness of generalized trun- cated Brown-Peterson spectra of height 2 as E_\infty-ring spectra. The criterion is checked for an example at the prime 2 derived from the universal elliptic curve equipped with a level Γ_1(3)-structure.
Given an abelian $p$-group $G$ of rank $n$, we construct an action of the torus $\mathbb{T}^n$ on the stable module $\infty$-category of $G$-representations over a field of characteristic $p$. The homotopy fixed points are given by the $\infty$-category of module spectra over the Tate construction of the torus. The relationship thus obtained arises from a Galois extension in the sense of Rognes, with Galois group given by the torus. As one application, we give a homotopy-theoretic proof of Dade's classification of endotrivial modules for abelian $p$-groups. As another application, we give a sl…
We show that Lubin-Tate spectra at the prime $2$ are Real oriented and Real Landweber exact. The proof is by application of the Goerss-Hopkins-Miller theorem to algebras with involution. For each height $n$, we compute the entire homotopy fixed point spectral sequence for $E_n$ with its $C_2$-action given by the formal inverse. We study, as the height varies, the Hurewicz images of the stable homotopy groups of spheres in the homotopy of these $C_2$-fixed points.
We explore the $C_2$-equivariant spectra $Tmf_1(3)$ and $TMF_1(3)$. In particular, we compute their $C_2$-equivariant Picard groups and the $C_2$-equivariant Anderson dual of $Tmf_1(3)$. This implies corresponding results for the fixed point spectra $TMF_0(3)$ and $Tmf_0(3)$. Furthermore, we prove a Real Landweber exact functor theorem.
Let $E_n$ be Morava $E$-theory and let $G \subset G_n$ be a finite subgroup of $G_n$, the extended Morava stabilizer group. Let $E_{n}^{tG}$ be the Tate spectrum, defined as the cofiber of the norm map $N:(E_n)_{hG} \to E_n^{hG}$. We use the Tate spectral sequence to calculate $π_*E_{p-1}^{tG}$ for $G$ a maximal finite $p$-subgroup, and $p$ an odd prime. We show that $E_{p-1}^{tG} \simeq \ast$, so that the norm map gives equivalence between homotopy fixed point and homotopy orbit spectra. Our methods also give a calculation of $π_*E_{p-1}^{hG}$, which is a folklore calculation of Hopkins and M…
We study certain formal group laws equipped with an action of the cyclic group of order a power of $2$. We construct $C_{2^n}$-equivariant Real oriented models of Lubin-Tate spectra $E_h$ at heights $h=2^{n-1}m$ and give explicit formulas of the $C_{2^n}$-action on their coefficient rings. Our construction utilizes equivariant formal group laws associated with the norms of the Real bordism theory $MU_{\mathbb{R}}$, and our work examines the height of the formal group laws of the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norms of $MU_{\mathbb{R}}$.
Nilpotence in the homotopy of $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring spectra is detected by the classical $H\mathbb{Z}$-Hurewicz homomorphism. Inspired by questions of Mathew, Noel, and Naumann, we investigate the extent to which this criterion holds in the homotopy of $\mathbb{E}_n$-ring spectra. For all odd primes $p$ and all chromatic heights $h$, we use the Cohen-Moore-Neisendorfer theorem to construct examples of $K(h)$-local, $\mathbb{E}_{2n-1}$-algebras with non-nilpotent $p^n$-torsion. We exploit the interaction of the Bousfield-Kuhn functor on odd spheres and Rezk's logarithm to show that our bound…
Using an analogy between the Brauer groups in algebra and the Whitehead groups in topology, we first use methods of algebraic K-theory to give a natural definition of Brauer spectra for commutative rings, such that their homotopy groups are given by the Brauer group, the Picard group and the group of units. Then, in the context of structured ring spectra, the same idea leads to two-fold non-connected deloopings of the spectra of units.
We construct spectral sequences for computing the cohomology of automorphism groups of formal groups with complex multiplication by a $p$-adic number ring. We then compute the cohomology of the group of automorphisms of a height four formal group law which commute with complex multiplication by the ring of integers in the field $\mathbb{Q}_p(\sqrt{p})$, for primes $p>5$. This is a large subgroup of the height four strict Morava stabilizer group. The group cohomology of this group of automorphisms turns out to have cohomological dimension $8$ and total rank $80$. We then run the $K(4)$-local $E…
We equip $\mathrm{BP} \langle n \rangle$ with an $\mathbb{E}_3$-$\mathrm{BP}$-algebra structure, for each prime $p$ and height $n$. The algebraic $K$-theory of this ring is of chromatic height exactly $n+1$, and the map $\mathrm{K}(\mathrm{BP}\langle n \rangle)_{(p)} \to \mathrm{L}_{n+1}^{f} \mathrm{K}(\mathrm{BP}\langle n\rangle)_{(p)}$ has bounded above fiber.
