We study the orientability of vector bundles with respect to a family of cohomology theories called $\mathrm{EO}$-theories. The $\mathrm{EO}$-theories are higher height analogues of real $\mathrm{K}$-theory $\mathrm{KO}$. For each $\mathrm{EO}$-theory, we prove that the direct sum of $i$ copies of any vector bundle is $\mathrm{EO}$-orientable for some specific integer $i$. Using a splitting principal, we reduce to the case of the canonical line bundle over $\mathbb{CP}^{\infty}$. Our method involves understanding the action of an order $p$ subgroup of the Morava stabilizer group on the Morava $\mathrm{E}$-theory of $\mathbb{CP}^{\infty}$. Our calculations have another application: We determine the homotopy type of the $\mathrm{S}^{1}$-Tate spectrum associated to the trivial action of $\mathrm{S}^{1}$ on all $\mathrm{EO}$-theories.
Let $C_2$ denote the cyclic group of order 2. We compute the $RO(C_2)$-graded cohomology of all $C_2$-surfaces with constant integral coefficients. We show when the action is nonfree, the answer depends only on the genus, the orientability of the underlying surface, the number of isolated fixed points, the number of fixed circles with trivial normal bundles, and the number of fixed circles with nontrivial normal bundles. When the action on the surface is free, we show the answer depends only on the genus, the orientability of the underlying surface, whether the action is orientation preserving…
We examine the relation between the gauge groups of $\mathrm{SU}(n)$- and $\mathrm{PU}(n)$-bundles over $S^{2i}$, with $2\leq i\leq n$, particularly when $n$ is a prime. As special cases, for $\mathrm{PU}(5)$-bundles over $S^4$, we show that there is a rational or $p$-local equivalence $\mathcal{G}_{2,k}\simeq_{(p)}\mathcal{G}_{2,l}$ for any prime $p$ if, and only if, $(120,k)=(120,l)$, while for $\mathrm{PU}(3)$-bundles over $S^6$ there is an integral equivalence $\mathcal{G}_{3,k}\simeq\mathcal{G}_{3,l}$ if, and only if, $(120,k)=(120,l)$.
The gauge group of a principal $G$-bundle $P$ over a space $X$ is the group of $G$-equivariant homeomorphisms of $P$ that cover the identity on $X$. We consider the gauge groups of bundles over $S^4$ with $\mathrm{Spin}^c(n)$, the complex spin group, as structure group and show how the study of their homotopy types reduces to that of $\mathrm{Spin}(n)$-gauge groups over $S^4$. We then advance on what is known by providing a partial classification for $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$- and $\mathrm{Spin}(8)$-gauge groups over $S^4$.
Let $\mathscr{V}\mathrm{ect}_n$ be the moduli stack of vector bundles of rank $n$ on schemes. We prove that, if $E$ is a Zariski sheaf of ring spectra which is equipped with finite quasi-smooth transfers and satisfies the projective bundle formula, then $E^*(\mathscr{V}\mathrm{ect}_{n,S})$ is freely generated by Chern classes $c_1,\dotsc,c_n$ over $E^*(S)$ for any scheme $S$. Examples include all multiplicative localizing invariants.

We define the notion of spectral network on manifolds of dimension $\le 3$. For a manifold $X$ equipped with a spectral network, we construct equivalences between Chern-Simons invariants of flat ${\mathrm {SL}}(2,{\mathbb C})$-bundles over $X$ and Chern-Simons invariants of flat ${\mathbb C}^\times$-bundles over ramified double covers $\widetilde X$. Applications include a new viewpoint on dilogarithmic formulas for Chern-Simons invariants of flat ${\mathrm {SL}}(2,{\mathbb C})$-bundles over triangulated 3-manifolds, and an explicit description of Chern-Simons lines of flat ${\mathrm {SL}}(2,{…
We show that the Igusa-Klein topological torsion and the Bismut-Lott analytic torsion are equivalent for any flat vector bundle whose holonomy is a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Q})$. Our proof uses Artin's induction theorem in representation theory to reduce the problem to the special case of trivial flat line bundles, which is a recent result of Puchol, Zhu and the second author. The idea of using Artin's induction theorem appeared in a paper of Ohrt on the same topic, of which our present work is an improvement.
