We consider the zero-range process with long jumps and in contact with infinitely many reservoirs in its non-equilibrium stationary state. We derive the hydrostatic limit and the Fick's law, which are a consequence of a relationship between the exclusion process and the zero-range process. We also obtain the large deviation principle for the empirical density, i.e. we compute the non-equilibrium free energy.
In the paper, stationary measures of stochastic differential equations with jumps are considered. Under some general conditions, existence of stationary measures is proved through Markov measures and Lyapunov functions. Moreover, for two special cases, stationary measures are given by solutions of Fokker-Planck equations and long time limits for the distributions of system states.
We analyze a jump processes $Z$ with a jump measure determined by a "memory" process $S$. The state space of $(Z,S)$ is the Cartesian product of the unit circle and the real line. We prove that the stationary distribution of $(Z,S)$ is the product of the uniform probability measure and a Gaussian distribution.
We analyze jump processes $Z$ with ``inert drift'' determined by a ``memory'' process $S$. The state space of $(Z,S)$ is the Cartesian product of the unit circle and the real line. We prove that the stationary distribution of $(Z,S)$ is the product of the uniform probability measure and a Gaussian distribution.
We prove an invariance principle for a tagged particle in a simple exclusion process out of equilibrium. The scaling limit is a time-inhomogeneous process of independent increments, related to the solution of a fractional heat equation.
We consider stationary fluctuations for the multi-species zero range process with long jumps in one dimension, where the underlying transition probability kernel is $p(x) = c_+ |x|^{-1-α}$ if $x > 0$ and $= c_-|x|^{-1-α}$ if $x < 0$. Above, $c_{\pm} \geq 0, α> 0$ are parameters. We prove that for $0 < α< 3/2$, the density fluctuation fields converge to the stationary solution of a coupled fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, and for $α=3/2$, the limit points are concentrated on stationary energy solutions to a coupled fractional Burgers equation.
We are interested in the connection between a metastable continuous state space Markov process (satisfying e.g. the Langevin or overdamped Langevin equation) and a jump Markov process in a discrete state space. More precisely, we use the notion of quasi-stationary distribution within a metastable state for the continuous state space Markov process to parametrize the exit event from the state. This approach is useful to analyze and justify methods which use the jump Markov process underlying a metastable dynamics as a support to efficiently sample the state-to-state dynamics (accelerated dynami…
We provide a complete description of the equilibrium fluctuations for diffusive symmetric exclusion processes with long jumps in contact with infinitely extended reservoirs and prove that they behave as generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes with various boundary conditions, depending mainly on the strength of the reservoirs. On the way, we also give a general statement about uniqueness of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process originated by the microscopic dynamics of the underlying interacting particle systems and adapt it to our study.
In this paper, we study a birth and death process $\{N_t\}_{t\ge0}$ on positive half lattice, which at each discontinuity jumps at most a distance $R\ge 1$ to the right or exactly a distance $1$ to the left. The transitional probabilities at each site are nonhomogeneous. Firstly, sufficient conditions for the recurrence and positive recurrence are presented. Then by the branching structure within random walk with one-side bounded jumps set up in Hong and Wang (2013), the explicit form of the stationary distribution of the process $\{N_t\}_{t\ge0}$ is formulated.
We consider a two dimensional reflecting random walk on the nonnegative integer quadrant. This random walk is assumed to be skip free in the direction to the boundary of the quadrant, but may have unbounded jumps in the opposite direction, which are referred to as upward jumps. We are interested in the tail asymptotic behavior of its stationary distribution, provided it exists. Assuming the upward jump size distributions have light tails, we completely find the rough tail asymptotics of the marginal stationary distributions in all directions. This generalizes the corresponding results for the …
We describe the processes obtained by time reversal of a class of stationary jump-diffusion processes that model the dynamics of genetic variation in populations subject to repeated bottlenecks. Assuming that only one lineage survives each bottleneck, the forward process is a diffusion on [0,1] that jumps to the boundary before diffusing back into the interior. We show that the behavior of the time-reversed process depends on whether the boundaries are accessible to the diffusive motion of the forward process. If a boundary point is inaccessible to the forward diffusion, then time reversal lea…
We study the $2d$ stationary fluctuations of the interface in the SOS approximation of the non equilibrium stationary state found in \cite{DOP}. We prove that the interface fluctuations are of order $N^{1/4}$, $N$ the size of the system. We also prove that the scaling limit is a stationary Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.
We examine the entropy of non-equilibrium stationary states of boundary driven totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes. As a consequence, we obtain that the Gibbs-Shannon entropy of the non equilibrium stationary state converges to the Gibbs-Shannon entropy of the local equilibrium state. Moreover, we prove that its fluctuations are Gaussian, except when the mean displacement of particles produced by the bulk dynamics agrees with the particle flux induced by the density reservoirs in the maximal phase regime.
We study random walk with unbounded jumps in random environment. The environment is stationary and ergodic, uniformly elliptic and decays polynomially with speed $Dj^{-(3+\varepsilon_0)}$ for some small $\varepsilon_0>0$ and proper $D>0.$ We prove a law of large number with positive velocity under the condition that the annealed mean of the hitting time of the positive half lattice is finite. Secondly, we consider birth and death process with bounded jumps in stationary and ergodic environment. Under the uniformly elliptic condition, we prove a law of large number and give the explicit formula…
We consider the piecewise-deterministic Markov process obtained by randomly switching between the flows generated by a finite set of smooth vector fields on a compact set. We obtain Hörmander-type conditions on the vector fields guaranteeing that the stationary density is: $C^k$ whenever the jump rates are sufficiently fast, for any $k<\infty$; unbounded whenever the jump rates are sufficiently slow and lower semi-continuous regardless of the jump rates. Our proofs are probabilistic, relying on a novel application of stopping times.
Let $Γ$ denote the space of all locally finite subsets (configurations) in $\mathbb R^d$. A stochastic dynamics of binary jumps in continuum is a Markov process on $Γ$ in which pairs of particles simultaneously hop over $\mathbb R^d$. We discuss a non-equilibrium dynamics of binary jumps. We prove the existence of an evolution of correlation functions on a finite time interval. We also show that a Vlasov-type mesoscopic scaling for such a dynamics leads to a generalized Boltzmann non-linear equation for the particle density.
We consider a symmetric $n$-player nonzero-sum stochastic differential game with controlled jumps and mean-field type interaction among the players. Each player minimizes some expected cost by affecting the drift as well as the jump part of their own private state process. We consider the corresponding limiting mean-field game and, under the assumption that the latter admits a regular Markovian solution, we prove that an approximate Nash equilibrium for the $n$-player game can be constructed for $n$ large enough, and provide the rate of convergence. This extends to a class of games with contro…
We investigate the local equilibrium (LE) distribution of a crystal surface jump process as it approaches its hydrodynamic (continuum) limit in a nonstandard scaling regime introduced by Marzuola and Weare. The atypical scaling leads to a local equilibrium state whose structure is novel, to the best of our knowledge. The distinguishing characteristic of the new, "rough" LE state is that the ensemble average of single lattice site observables do not vary smoothly across lattice sites. We investigate numerically and analytically how the rough LE state affects the convergence mechanism via three …
We compute the stationary distribution of a continuous-time Markov chain which is constructed by gluing together two finite, irreducible Markov chains by identifying a pair of states of one chain with a pair of states of the other and keeping all transition rates from either chain (the rates between the two shared states are summed). The result expresses the stationary distribution of the glued chain in terms of quantities of the two original chains. Some of the required terms are nonstandard but can be computed by solving systems of linear equations using the transition rate matrices of the t…
Let $Γ$ denote the space of all locally finite subsets (configurations) in $R^d$. A stochastic dynamics of binary jumps in continuum is a Markov process on $Γ$ in which pairs of particles simultaneously hop over $R^d$. In this paper, we study an equilibrium dynamics of binary jumps for which a Poisson measure is a symmetrizing (and hence invariant) measure. The existence and uniqueness of the corresponding stochastic dynamics are shown. We next prove the main result of this paper: a big class of dynamics of binary jumps converge, in a diffusive scaling limit, to a dynamics of interacting Brown…
We consider a stochastic heat conduction model for solids composed by N interacting atoms. The system is in contact with two heat baths at different temperature $T_\ell$ and $T_r$. The bulk dynamics conserve two quantities: the energy and the deformation between atoms. If $T_\ell \neq T_r$, a heat flux takes place in the system. For large $N$, the system adopts a linear temperature profile between $T_\ell$ and $T_r$. We establish the hydrodynamic limit for the two conserved quantities. We introduce the fluctuations field of the energy and of the deformation in the non-equilibrium steady state.…
In this paper we investigate Nash equilibrium payoffs for two-player nonzero-sum stochastic differential games whose cost functionals are defined by a system of coupled backward stochastic differential equations. We obtain an existence theorem and a characterization theorem for Nash equilibrium payoffs. For this end the problem is described equivalently by a stochastic differential game with jumps. But, however, unlike the work by Buckdahn, Hu and Li [9], here the important tool of a dynamic programming principle for stopping times has to be developed. Moreover, we prove that the lower and upp…
We consider a Markov chain on $R^+$ with asymptotically zero drift and finite second moments of jumps which is positive recurrent. A power-like asymptotic behaviour of the invariant tail distribution is proven; such a heavy-tailed invariant measure happens even if the jumps of the chain are bounded. Our analysis is based on test functions technique and on construction of a harmonic function.
For integer valued random variables, the translated Poisson distributions form a flexible family for approximation in total variation, in much the same way that the normal family is used for approximation in Kolmogorov distance. Using the Stein--Chen method, approximation can often be achieved with error bounds of the same order as those for the CLT. In this paper, an analogous theory, again based on Stein's method, is developed in the multivariate context. The approximating family consists of the equilibrium distributions of a collection of Markov jump processes, whose analogues in one dimens…
Convergence rate to the stationary distribution for continuous-time Markov processes can be studied using Lyapunov functions. Recent work by the author provided explicit rates of convergence in special case of a reflected jump-diffusion on a half-line. These results are proved for total variation distance and its generalizations: measure distances defined by test functions regardless of their continuity. Here we prove similar results for Wasserstein distance, convergence in which is related to convergence for continuou test functions. In some cases, including the reflected Ornstein-Uhlenbeck p…
We continue the study of a model for heat conduction consisting of a chain of non-linear oscillators coupled to two Hamiltonian heat reservoirs at different temperatures. We establish existence of a Liapunov function for the chain dynamics and use it to show exponentially fast convergence of the dynamics to a unique stationary state. Ingredients of the proof are the reduction of the infinite dimensional dynamics to a finite-dimensional stochastic process as well as a bound on the propagation of energy in chains of anharmonic oscillators.
We show that the stationary density fluctuations of exclusion processes with long jumps, whose rates are of the form $c^\pm |y-x|^{-(1+α)}$ where $c\pm$ depends on the sign of $y-x$, are given by a fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process for $α\in (0,\frac{3}{2})$. When $α=\frac{3}{2}$ we show that the density fluctuations are tight, in a suitable topology, and that any limit point is an energy solution of the fractional Burgers equation, previously introduced in \cite{GubJar} in the finite volume setting.
We consider a class of Lévy-type processes derived via a Doob-transform from Lévy processes conditioned by a control function called potential. These processes have position-dependent and generally unbounded components, with stationary distributions given by the ground states of the Lévy generators perturbed by the potential. We derive precise lower and upper envelopes for the almost sure long time behaviour of these ground state-transformed Lévy processes, characterized through escape rates and integral tests. We also highlight the role of the parameters by specific examples.
A Markovian single-server queue is studied in an interactive random environment. The arrival and service rates of the queue depend on the environment, while the transition dynamics of the random environment depends on the queue length. We consider in detail two types of Markov random environments: a pure jump process and a reflected jump-diffusion. In both cases, the joint dynamics is constructed so that the stationary distribution can be explicitly found in a simple form (weighted geometric). We also derive an explicit estimate for exponential rate of convergence to the stationary distributio…
We investigate mean-field games from the point of view of a large number of indistinguishable players which eventually converges to infinity. The players are weakly coupled via their empirical measure. The dynamics of the states of the individual players is governed by a non-autonomous pure jump type semi group in a Euclidean space, which is not necessarily smoothing. Investigations are conducted in the framework of non-linear Markov processes. We show that the individual optimal strategy results from a consistent coupling of an optimal control problem with a forward non-autonomous dynamics. I…
Juggler's exclusion process describes a system of particles on the positive integers where particles drift down to zero at unit speed. After a particle hits zero, it jumps into a randomly chosen unoccupied site. We model the system as a set-valued Markov process and show that the process is ergodic if the family of jump height distributions is uniformly integrable. In a special case where the particles jump according to a set-avoiding memoryless distribution, the process reaches its equilibrium in finite nonrandom time, and the equilibrium distribution can be represented as a Gibbs measure con…
We propose a general framework for studying jump-diffusion systems driven by both Gaussian noise and a jump process with state-dependent intensity. Of particular natural interest are the jump locations: the system evaluated at the jump times. However, the state-dependence of the jump rate provides direct coupling between the diffusion and jump components, making disentangling the two to study individually difficult. We provide an iterative map formulation of the sequence of distributions of jump locations. Computation of these distributions allows for the extraction of the interjump time stati…
Mean-field integro-differential equations are studied in an abstract framework, through couplings of the corresponding stochastic processes. In the perturbative regime, the equation is proven to admit a unique equilibrium, toward which the process converges exponentially fast. Similarly, in this case, the associated particle system is proven to converge toward its equilibrium at a rate independent from the number of particles.
We prove the law of large numbers and invariance principles for the tagged particle in the asymmetric exclusion process with long jumps when the process starts from its equilibrium measure.
We consider a one-dimensional symmetric simple exclusion process in contact with slowed reservoirs: at the left (resp. right) boundary, particles are either created or removed at rates given by $α/n$ or $(1-α)/n$ (resp. $β/n$ or $(1-β)/n$) where $α, β>0$ and $n$ is a scaling parameter. We obtain the non-equilibrium fluctuations and consequently the non-equilibrium stationary fluctuations.
For a continuous-time Markov process, we characterize the law of the first jump location when started from an arbitrary initial distribution, in terms of the invariant distribution of an auxiliary Markov process. This could be of interest in the burgeoning fields of piecewise-deterministic Markov chain Monte Carlo methods and quasi-stationary Monte Carlo methods.
We consider a system consisting of $n$ particles, moving forward in jumps on the real line. System state is the empirical distribution of particle locations. Each particle ``jumps forward'' at some time points, with the instantaneous rate of jumps given by a decreasing function of the particle's location quantile within the current state (empirical distribution). Previous work on this model established, under certain conditions, the convergence, as $n\to\infty$, of the system random dynamics to that of a deterministic mean-field model (MFM), which is a solution to an integro-differential equat…
We consider Markov processes that alternate continuous motions and jumps in a general locally compact polish space. Starting from a mechanistic construction, a first contribution of this article is to provide conditions on the dynamics so that the associated transition kernel forms a Feller semigroup, and to deduce the corresponding infinitesimal generator. In a second contribution, we investigate the ergodic properties in the special case where the jumps consist of births and deaths, a situation observed in several applications including epidemiology, ecology and microbiology. Based on a coup…
We consider a piecewise-deterministic Markov process governed by a jump intensity function, a rate function that determines the behaviour between jumps, and a stochastic kernel describing the conditional distribution of jump sizes. We study the point process of upcrossings of a level $b$ by the Markov process. Our main result shows that, under a suitable scaling $ν(b)$, the point process converges, as $b$ tends to infinity, weakly to a geometrically compound Poisson process. We also prove a version of Rice's formula relating the stationary density of the process to level crossing intensities. …
In this paper, we consider a piecewise deterministic Markov process (PDMP), with known flow and deterministic transition measure, and unknown jump rate $λ$. To estimate nonparametrically the jump rate, we first construct an adaptive estimator of the stationary density, then we derive a quotient estimator $\hatλ_n$ of $λ$. We provide uniform bounds for the risk of these estimators, and prove that the estimator of the jump rate is nearly minimax (up to a $\ln^2(n)$ factor). Simulations illustrate the behavior of our estimator.
We derive the non-equilibrium fluctuations of one-dimensional symmetric simple exclusion processes in contact with slowed stochastic reservoirs which are regulated by a factor $n^{-θ}$. Depending on the range of $θ$ we obtain processes with various boundary conditions. Moreover, as a consequence of the previous result we deduce the non-equilibrium stationary fluctuations by using the matrix ansatz method which gives us information on the stationary measure for the model. The main ingredient to prove these results is the derivation of precise bounds on the two-point space-time correlation funct…

We consider a random walk in a stationary ergodic environment in $\mathbb Z$, with unbounded jumps. In addition to uniform ellipticity and a bound on the tails of the possible jumps, we assume a condition of strong transience to the right which implies that there are no "traps". We prove the law of large numbers with positive speed, as well as the ergodicity of the environment seen from the particle. Then, we consider Knudsen stochastic billiard with a drift in a random tube in ${\mathbb R}^d$, $d\geq 3$, which serves as environment. The tube is infinite in the first direction, and is a statio…
Current evolutionary biology models usually assume that a phenotype undergoes gradual change. This is in stark contrast to biological intuition, which indicates that change can also be punctuated-the phenotype can jump. Such a jump could especially occur at speciation, i.e. dramatic change occurs that drives the species apart. Here we derive a Central Limit Theorem for punctuated equilibrium. We show that, if adaptation is fast, for weak convergence to normality to hold, the variability in the occurrence of change has to disappear with time.
In this paper, we consider a class of multi-dimensional stochastic delay differential equations with jump reflection. Based on existence and uniqueness of the strong solution to the equation, we prove that the Markov semigroup generated by the segment process corresponding to the solution admits a unique invariant measure on the Skorohod space when the coefficients of equation satisfy a class of monotone conditions. Finally, we establish a relationship between the regulator and the local time of the solution and discuss a local time property at large time under the stationary setting.
Consider a reflected jump-diffusion on the positive half-line. Assume it is stochastically ordered. We apply the theory of Lyapunov functions and find explicit estimates for the rate of exponential convergence to the stationary distribution, as time goes to infinity. This continues the work of Lund, Meyn and Tweedie (1996). We apply these results to systems of two competing Levy particles with rank-dependent dynamics.
In this paper, we consider the $(1,R)$ state-dependent reflecting random walk (RW) on the half line, allowing the size of jumps to the right at maximal $R$ and to the left only 1. We provide an explicit criterion for positive recurrence and the explicit expression of the stationary distribution based on the intrinsic branching structure within the walk. As an application, we obtain the tail asymptotic of the stationary distribution in the "near critical" situation.
