The deformation properties of 74Ge, 74Se and 74Kr are studied within the phenomenological Bohr-Mottelson model, having as input the experimental collective energy states, as well with Covariant Density Functional theories based on microscopic structural information. The results of these approaches are shown to be compatible in what concerns the presence of coexisting shapes in the considered nuclei, while the emergence of shape mixing is deduced from the phenomenological calculated collective states.
We investigate a description of shape-mixing and shape-transitions using collective coordinates. To that end we apply a theory of adiabatic large-amplitude motion to a simplified nuclear shell-model, where the approximate results can be contrasted with exact diagonalisations. We find excellent agreement for different regimes, and contrast the results with those from a more standard calculation using a quadrupole constraint. We show that the method employed in this work selects diabatic (crossing) potential energy curves where these are appropriate, and discuss the implications for a microscopi…
Assuming that the time-evolution of the self-consistent mean field is determined by five pairs of collective coordinate and collective momentum, we microscopically derive the collective Hamiltonian for low-frequency quadrupole modes of excitation. We show that the five-dimensional collective Schrödinger equation is capable of describing large-amplitude quadrupole shape dynamics seen as shape coexistence/mixing phenomena. We focus on basic ideas and recent advances of the approaches based on the time-dependent mean-field theory, but relations to other time-independent approaches are also briefl…
The adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate (ASCC) method is applied to the pairing-plus-quadrupole (P + Q) model Hamiltonian including the quadrupole pairing, and the oblate-prolate shape coexistence phenomena in proton-rich nuclei, 68Se and 72Kr, are investigated. It is shown that the collective path connecting the oblate and prolate local minima runs along a triaxial valley in the beta-gamma plane. Quantum collective Hamiltonian is constructed and low-lying energy spectra and E2 transition probabilities are calculated for the first time using the ASCC method. Basic properties of the…
Shape coexistence has been a subject of great interest in nuclear physics for many decades. In the context of the nuclear shell model, intruder excitations may give rise to remarkably low-lying excited $0^+$ states associated with different intrinsic shapes. In heavy open-shell nuclei, the dimension of the shell-model configuration space that includes such intruder excitations becomes exceedingly large, thus requiring a drastic truncation scheme. Such a framework has been provided by the interacting boson model (IBM). In this article we address the phenomenon of shape coexistence and its relev…
Corrections to the Born approximation in photo-induced strangeness production off a proton are calculated in a semi-realistic microscopic model. The vertex corrections and internal contributions to the amplitude of the $γp \to K^+ Λ$ reaction are included on the one-loop level. Different gauge-invariant phenomenological prescriptions for the modification of the Born contribution via the introduction of form factors and contact terms are discussed. In particular, it is shown that the popular minimal-substitution method of Ohta corresponds to a special limit of the more realistic approach.
We investigate the emergence and evolution of shape coexistence in the neutron-deficient Lead isotopes within the interacting boson model (IBM) plus configuration mixing with microscopic input based on the Gogny energy density functional (EDF). The microscopic potential energy surface obtained from the constrained self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method employing the Gogny-D1M EDF is mapped onto the coherent-state expectation value of the configuration-mixing IBM Hamiltonian. In this way, the parameters of the IBM Hamiltonian are fixed for each of the three relevant configurations (sphe…
We overview the current status of theoretical approaches for heavy-ion fusion reactions at subbarrier energies. We particularly discuss theoretical challenges in the coupled-channels approach, that include i) a description of deep subbarrier hindrance of fusion cross sections, ii) the role of nuclear dissipation, iii) fusion of unstable nuclei, and iv) an interplay between fusion and multi-nucleon transfer processes. We also present results of a semi-microscopic approach to heavy-ion fusion reactions, that combines the coupled-channels approach with state-of-the-art microscopic nuclear structu…
Microscopic dynamics of the oblate-prolate shape coexistence/mixing phenomena in 68Se and 72Kr are studied by means of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate (ASCC) method in conjunction with the pairing-plus-quadrupole (P+Q) Hamiltonian including the quadrupole pairing interaction. Quantum collective Hamiltonian is constructed, and excitation spectra, spectroscopic quadrupole moments and quadrupole transition properties are evaluated. The effect of the time-odd pair field on the collective mass (inertia function) of the large-amplitude vibration and the rotational moments of iner…

A $γγ$ angular correlation experiment has been performed to investigate the low-energy states of the nucleus $^{98}$Mo. The new data, including spin assignments, multipole mixing ratios and lifetimes reveal evidence for shape coexistence and mixing in $^{98}$Mo, arising from a proton intruder configuration. This result is reproduced by a theoretical calculation within the proton-neutron interacting boson model with configuration mixing, based on microscopic energy density functional theory. The microscopic calculation indicates the importance of the proton particle-hole excitation across the Z…
Based on the results of a previous paper (Paper I), by performing the geometrical mapping via coherent states, phase transitions are investigated and compared within two algebraic cluster models. The difference between the Semimicroscopic Algebraic Cluster Model (SACM) and the Phenomenological Algebraic Cluster Model (PACM) is that the former strictly observes the Pauli exclusion principle between the nucleons of the individual clusters, while the latter ignores it. From the technical point of view the SACM is more involved mathematically, while the formalism of the PACM is closer to that of o…
The geometrical mapping of algebraic nuclear cluster models is investigated within the coherent state formalism. Two models are considered: the Semimicroscopic Algebraic Cluster Model (SACM) and the Phenomenological Algebraic Cluster Model (PACM), which is a special limit of the SACM. The SACM strictly observes the Pauli exclusion principle while the PACM does not. The discussion of the SACM is adapted to the coherent state formalism by introducing the new SO(3) dynamical symmetry limit and third-order interaction terms in the Hamiltonian. The potential energy surface is constructed in both mo…
The two-dimensional Ising model with fixed magnetization is studied using Monte Carlo techniques. At the coexistence line, the macroscopic, extensive droplet of minority spins becomes thermally unstable by breaking up into microscopic clusters. Intriguing finite--size effects as well as singularities of thermal and cluster properties associated with the transition are discussed.
The limiting temperature $T_{lim}$ of a series of nuclei is calculated employing a set of microscopic nuclear Equations of State (EoS). It is shown that the value of $T_{lim}$ is sensitive to the nuclear matter Equation of State used. Comparison with the values extracted in recent phenomenological analysis appears to favour a definite selection of EoS' s. On the basis of this phenomenological analysis, it seems therefore possible to check the microscopic calculations of the nuclear EoS at finite temperature, which is hardly accessible through other experimental informations.
Shape coexistence problems in N=14 isotones are studied with a microscopic method of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. The present calculations reproduce features of deformation in 28Si, and predict possible shape coexistence of neutron density in neutron-rich nuclei(19B and 24Ne). We also systematically study the structures of the ground and excited states, and the molecular resonances of 28Si. Besides the shape coexistence in the low-energy region, the results indicate the high-lying levels with $α$-cluster and 12C+16O molecular structures in 28Si, which are consistent with the observed sp…
A brief review of recent progress in the ab intio theory of nuclear pairing is given. Nowdays several successful solutions of the ab intio BCS theory gap equation were published which show that it is a promising first step in the problem. However, the role of many-body correlations that go beyond the BCS scheme remains uncertain and requires further investigations. As an alternative, the semi-microscopic model is discussed in which the effective pairing interaction calculated from the first principles is supplemented with a small phenomenological addendum containing one phenomenological parame…
A semi-microscopic model for nucleon pairing in nuclei is presented starting from the ab intio BCS gap equation with Argonne v18 force and the self-consistent Energy Density Functional Method basis characterized with the bare nucleon mass. The BCS theory is formulated in terms of the model space S0 with the effective pairing interaction calculated from the first principles in the subsidiary space S0. This effective interaction is supplemented with a small phenomenological addendum containing one phenomenological parameter universal for all medium and heavy atomic nuclei. We consider the latter…
Elastic scattering is a very important process to understand nuclear interactions in finite nuclei. Despite decades of efforts, the goal of reaching a coherent description of this physical process in terms of microscopic forces is still far from being completed. In previous papers (Phys. Rev. C93, 034619 (2016), Phys. Rev. C96, 044001 (2017)) we derived a nonrelativistic theoretical optical potential from nucleon-nucleon chiral potentials at fourth (N3LO) and fifth order (N4LO). We checked convergence patterns and established theoretical error bands. With this work we study the performances of…
Strong interaction energy shifts and widths in kaonic atoms are calculated for the first time using microscopic $K^- N$ + $K^- NN$ potentials derived from $K^- N$ scattering amplitudes constructed within SU(3) chiral coupled-channels models of meson-baryon interactions. The in-medium modifications of the free-space amplitudes due to the Pauli correlations are taken into account. The $K^-N+K^-NN$ potentials evaluated for 23 nuclear species are confronted with kaonic atoms data. The description of the data significantly improves when the $K^-NN$ absorption is included. To get $χ^2$ as low as for…
We introduce a microscopic approach to derive all the inertial functions in the five-dimensional quadrupole collective Hamiltonian. Local normal modes are evaluated on the constrained mean field in the quasiparticle random-phase approximation in order to derive the inertial functions. The collective Hamiltonians for neutron-rich Mg isotopes are determined with use of this approach, and the shape coexistence/mixing around the N = 20 region is analyzed.
On the basis of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate method, we develop an efficient microscopic method of deriving the five-dimensional quadrupole collective Hamiltonian and illustrate its usefulness by applying it to the oblate-prolate shape coexistence/mixing phenomena in proton-rich 68,70,72Se. In this method, the vibrational and rotational collective masses (inertial functions) are determined by local normal modes built on constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov states. Numerical calculations are carried out using the pairing-plus-quadrupole Hamiltonian including the quadrupole…
Construction of the microscopic theory of large-amplitude collective motion, capable of describing a wide variety of quantum collective phenomena in nuclei, is a long-standing and fundamental subject in the study of nuclear many-body systems. Present status of the challenge toward this goal is discussed taking the shape coexistence/mixing phenomena as typical manifestations of the large-amplitude collective motion at zero temperature. Some open problems in rapidly rotating cold nuclei are also briefly discussed in this connection.
We discuss and explore new aspects of the generalized Dyson mapping of nuclear collective superalgebras composed of an arbitrary fermion-pair algebra and a set of single-fermion creation/annihilation operators. It is shown that a direct consequence of the particular mapping procedure is the conservation of the total number of ideal particles in the resulting boson-fermion system. This provides a microscopic framework for the phenomenological supersymmetric models based on the U(6/2Omega) dynamical superalgebras. Attention is paid to the mapping of single-fermion creation and annihilation opera…
A method of deriving the Hamiltonian of the interacting boson model, that is based on the microscopic framework of the nuclear energy density functional, is presented. The constrained self-consistent mean-field calculation with a given energy density functional provides potential energy surface within the relevant collective coordinates, which is subsequently mapped onto the expectation value of the interacting-boson Hamiltonian in the boson condensate state. This procedure completely determines the strength parameters of the IBM, and the diagonalization of the mapped Hamiltonian yields excita…
Half-lives of beta+ decay and electron capture are studied in some selected superheavy nuclei produced in hot fusion reactions, namely, 290Fl, 293Mc, 294Lv, and 295Ts. The nuclear structure is described microscopically from deformed self-consistent Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean-field calculations that include pairing correlations. The sensitivity of the half-lives to deformation and to the QEC energies, which are still not determined experimentally, are studied. The results are compared with phenomenological alpha-decay half-lives, showing that the latter decay mode is dominant in this mass region.
Nuclear and neutron matters are investigated in the low density region, well below the nuclear saturation density. Microscopic calculations, based on the Bethe-Brueckner approach with a few realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials, are compared with the predictions of a set of phenomenological effective interactions, mostly employed in nuclear structure studies. An energy functional is constructed on the basis of the microscopic bulk EoS and applied to a selection of nuclei throughout the mass table. The results provide a microscopic basis for a link between nuclear surface behaviour and neutron E…
We have developed a new method for determining microscopically the fivedimensional quadrupole collective Hamiltonian, on the basis of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate method. This method consists of the constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equation and the local QRPA (LQRPA) equations, which are an extension of the usual QRPA (quasiparticle random phase approximation) to non-HFB-equilibrium points, on top of the CHFB states. One of the advantages of our method is that the inertial functions calculated with this method contain the contributions of the time-odd components…
In the past decades, the γ-decay of giant resonances has been studied using phenomenological models. In keeping with possible future studies performed with exotic beams, microscopically-based frameworks should be envisaged. In the present paper, we introduce a model which is entirely based on Skyrme effective interactions, and treats the ground-state decay within the fully self-consistent Random Phase Approximation (RPA) and the decay to low-lying states at the lowest order beyond RPA. The model is applied to 208Pb and 90Zr, and the results are compared with experimental data.
Coexistence of different geometric shapes at low energies presents a universal structure phenomenon that occurs over the entire chart of nuclides. Studies of the shape coexistence are important for understanding the microscopic origin of collectivity and modifications of shell structure in exotic nuclei far from stability. The aim of this work is to provide a systematic analysis of characteristic signatures of coexisting nuclear shapes in different mass regions, using a global self-consistent theoretical method based on universal energy density functionals and the quadrupole collective model. …
Recent developments in theoretical modeling and in computational power have allowed us to make significant progress on a goal not achieved yet in nuclear theory: a fully microscopic theory of nuclear fission. The complete microscopic description remains a computationally demanding task, but the information that can be provided by current calculations can be extremely useful to guide and constrain phenomenological approaches. First, a truly microscopic framework that can describe the real-time dynamics of the fissioning system can justify or rule out assumptions and approximations incompatible …
We discuss the nature of the low-frequency quadrupole vibrations from small-amplitude to large-amplitude regimes. We consider full five-dimensional quadrupole dynamics including three-dimensional rotations restoring the broken symmetries as well as axially symmetric and asymmetric shape fluctuations. Assuming that the time-evolution of the self-consistent mean field is determined by five pairs of collective coordinates and collective momenta, we microscopically derive the collective Hamiltonian of Bohr and Mottelson, which describes low-frequency quadrupole dynamics. We show that the five-dime…
We compare a set of equations of state derived within microscopic many-body approaches, and study their predictions as far as phenomenological data on nuclei from heavy ion collisions, and astrophysical observations on neutron stars are concerned. We find that all the data, taken together, put strong constraints not easy to be fulfilled accurately. However, no major discrepancies are found among the selected equations of state and with respect to the data. The results provide an estimate of the uncertainty on the theoretical prediction at a microscopic level of the nuclear equation of state.
