Recent studies have outlined the interest for the evaluation of transport coefficients in space plasmas, where the observed velocity distributions of plasma particles are conditioned not only by the binary collisions, e.g., at low energies, but also by the energisation of particles from their interaction with wave turbulence and fluctuations, generating the suprathermal Kappa-distributed populations. This paper provides a first estimate of the main transport coefficients based on regularised Kappa distributions (RKDs), which, unlike standard Kappa distributions (SKDs), enable macroscopic parameterisation without mathematical divergences or physical inconsistencies. All transport coefficients derived here, i.e., the diffusion and mobility coefficients, electric conductivity, thermoelectric coefficient and thermal conductivity, are finite and well defined for all values of $κ> 0$. Moreover, for low values of $κ$ (i.e., below the SKD poles), the transport coefficients can be orders of magnitudes higher than the corresponding Maxwellian limits, meaning that significant underestimations can be made if suprathermal electrons are ignored.
The spectrum of the radiation of a body in equilibrium is given by Planck's law. In plasma, however, waves below the plasma frequency cannot propagate; consequently, the equilibrium radiation inside plasma is necessarily different from the Planck spectrum. We derive, using three different approaches, the spectrum for the equilibrium radiation inside plasma. We show that, while plasma effects cannot be realistically detected with technology available in the near future, there are a number of quantifiable ways in which plasma affects cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation.
A pair plasma in hidrostatic equilibrium near the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole is an exact state. In this work, we show that an exact non--hidrostatic equilibrium state can be sustained for a pair plasma, in which its constituents are moving near the horizon of the black hole. This equilibrium state solution is not due to a vortical formalism, but by the balance of forces in the plasma. This new equilibrium state has a pressure for the hydrostatic equilibrium, although the plasma moves. The equilibrium is achieved by the generation of a magnetic field that emerges by the interplay bet…
We analyze the equilibrium configuration for a modulated beam with sharp boundaries exposed to the fields self-generated by the interaction with a plasma. Through a semi-analytical approach we show the presence of multiple equilibrium configurations and we determine the one more suitable for wakefield excitation. Once pointed out the absence of confinement for the front of the beam and the consequently divergence driven by the emittance, we study the evolution of the equilibrium configuration while propagating in the plasma, discarding all the others time-dependencies. We show the onset of a r…
A local magnetic equilibrium model is presented, with finite aspect ratio and up-down asymmetrically shaped cross section, that depends on eight free parameters. In contrast with other local equilibria, which provide simple magnetic-surface parametrizations at the cost of complex poloidal-field flux descriptions, the proposed model is intentionally built to afford analytically tractable magnetic-field components. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for analytical assessments of equilibrium-shaping effects on a variety of tokamak-plasma phenomena.
This article addresses the importance of accurate characterization of plasma parameters for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) purposes. Most of EMC issues involving plasma materials are obviously multi-physics problems (linking chemical, mechanical, thermal and electromagnetic wondering) with deep interactions. One of the main objectives of this paper is to establish the theoretical effect of thermal non-equilibrium on electromagnetic wave propagation. This will be characterized throughout plasma key parameters (including complex permittivity). Numerical simulations based upon Finite Integra…
A non-equilibrium model for laser-induced plasmas is used to describe how nano-second temporal mode-beating affects plasma kernel formation and growth in quiescent air. The chemically reactive Navier-Stokes equations describe the hydrodynamics, and non-equilibrium effects are modeled based on a two-temperature model. Inverse Bremsstrahlung and multiphoton ionization are self-consistently taken into account via a coupled solution of the equations governing plasma dynamics and beam propagation and attenuation (i.e., Radiative Transfer Equation). This strategy, despite the additional challenges i…
In this study, the MHD equilibrium limit of LHD plasmas is studied using a 3D MHD equilibrium calculation code, HINT, which is an initial value solver based on the relaxation method without the assumption of nested flux surfaces. For finite beta equilibria, flux surfaces become stochastic in the peripheral region. However, though the axis shifts until the conventional limit, the separatrix to limit the equilibrium does not appear. For high beta equilibria, the force balance starts breaking in the stochastic region. To keep the force balance, the pressure gradient in the stochastic region decre…
An analytic solution to a generalized Grad-Shafranov equation with flow of arbitrary direction is obtained upon adopting the generic linearizing ansatz for the free functions related to the poloidal current, the static pressure and the electric field. Subsequently, a D-shaped tokamak pertinent equilibrium with sheared flow is constructed using the aforementioned solution.
Examination of equilibrium radiation in plasma media shows that the spectral energy distribution of such radiation is different from the Planck equilibrium radiation. Using the approach of quantum electrodynamics the general relation for the spectral energy density of equilibrium radiation in a system of charged particles is found. The obtained result takes into account the influence of plasma on equilibrium radiation through the explicit transverse dielectric permittivity which takes into account spatial and frequency dispersion, as well as the finite collisional damping. For the limiting cas…
The asymptotic behavior of the equilibrium radiation in Maxwellian plasma is studied for the low--frequency region. It is shown, that the equilibrium radiation can essentially deviate from the Planck law even for a weakly non-ideal plasma. The deviation from the Planck distribution is described by the transverse dielectric permittivity which takes into account both frequency and spatial dispersion. The influence of plasma non-ideality increases with the non-ideality parameter in the dielectric permittivity. The spectral energy distribution of the equilibrium radiation essentially changes in th…
A non-relativistic multi-fluid plasma axisymmetric equilibrium model was developed recently to account for the presence of an energetic electron fluid in addition to thermal electron and ion fluids. The equilibrium formulation of a multi-fluid plasma with relativistic energetic electrons is developed and reported in this paper. Relativistic effects in a fluid model approximation can appear in two ways: due to a large macroscopic fluid velocity comparable to the speed of light and large particle's microscopic random motion which becomes significant if the temperature becomes comparable to or la…
The asymptotic behavior of the equilibrium radiation in Maxwellian plasma is investigated for the region of low frequencies. It is shown, that already for a weakly non-ideal plasma the equilibrium radiation can essentially deviate from the Planck law. The deviation from the Planck distribution is described by the transverse dielectric permittivity which takes into account both frequency and spatial dispersion. The influence of plasma non-ideality increases with increase of the non-ideality parameter in the in the dielectric permittivity. The spectral energy distribution of the equilibrium radi…
We investigate collective Thomson scattering (CTS) in two-stream non-equilibrium plasmas analytically, numerically and experimentally. In laboratory astrophysics, CTS is a unique tool to obtain local plasma diagnostics. While the standard CTS theory assumes plasmas to be linear, stationary, isotropic and equilibrium, it is often nonlinear, non-stationary, anisotropic, and non-equilibrium in high energy phenomena relevant to laboratory astrophysics. We theoretically calculate and numerically simulate the CTS spectra in two-stream plasmas as a typical example of non-equilibrium system in space a…
In an expansion of a previous study [1], we apply inverse design methods to produce two-dimensional plasma metamaterial devices with realistic plasma elements which incorporate quartz envelopes, collisionality (loss), non-uniform density profiles, and resistance to experimental error/perturbation. Backpropagated finite difference frequency domain simulations are used to design waveguides and demultiplexers operating under the transverse magnetic polarization. Optimal devices with realistic elements are compared to previous devices with idealized elements, and several parameter initialization s…
The electron and gas temperature of non-equilibrium argon plasma torch sustained by a focused 24 GHz microwave beam in the external atmosphere of air was measured by optical emission spectroscopy. The excitation temperature of argon atoms was found about 5000 K, while the vibrational and rotational temperatures of ambient nitrogen molecules were respectively estimated at 3000 K and 2000 K. The effective mixing of the external gas atmosphere into the plasma torch is experimentally demonstrated. The vibrational and rotational temperatures of nitrogen molecules slightly increased with the distanc…
On the calculation of equilibrium thermodynamic properties and the establishment of statistical-thermodynamically-consistent finite bound-state partition functions in nonideal multi-component plasma mixtures within the chemical model
A uniform in space, oscillatory in time plasma equilibrium sustained by a time-dependent current density is analytically and numerically studied resorting to particle-in-cell simulations. The dispersion relation is derived from the Vlasov equation for oscillating equilibrium distribution functions, and used to demonstrate that the plasma has an infinite number of unstable kinetic modes. This instability represents a new kinetic mechanism for the decay of the initial mode of infinite wavelength (or equivalently null wavenumber), for which no classical wave breaking or Landau damping exists. The…
Drive particle beams in linear or weakly nonlinear regimes of the plasma wakefield accelerator quickly reach a radial equilibrium with the wakefield, which is described in detail for the first time. The equilibrium beam state and self-consistent wakefields are obtained by combining analytical relationships, numerical integration, and first-principle simulations. In the equilibrium state, the beam density is strongly peaked near the axis, the beam radius is constant along the beam, and longitudinal variation of the focusing strength is balanced by varying beam emittance. The transverse momentum…
It has recently been proposed that transport of energetic deuterium-trition ions (Knudsen layer), owing to their long mean free path, may deplete the tail of the velocity distribution in the vicinity of the Gamow peak and thus serve to greatly reduce the yield of an inertial confinement fusion (ICF) plasma [Molvig \emph{et al.}, \emph{Phys. Rev. Lett.}, 109:095001 (2012)]. Molecular dynamics simulations of the non-equilibrium response of a fusion plasma to ion distribution tail loss show that equilibrium is re-established extremely rapidly, with ion tail replenishment complete in less than 1 p…
This paper presents the plasma potential distribution across magnetic field lines in an argon/oxygen plasma created by 13.56 MHz CCRF discharge consisting of a pair of ring electrodes. It is found that the radial plasma density, electron temperature, and plasma potential shows unusual trends as the magnetic field strength and gas pressure increase. An analytical model has been formulated to explain the radial plasma potential profile when the short-circuiting effect due to conducting boundaries can be neglected. It is found that with certain approximations, the plasma potential distribution ca…

In this work, several key scaling laws of the quasi-static magnetic compression of field reversed configuration (FRC) plasma [Spencer, Tuszewski, and Linford, 1983] are amended from a series of 2D FRC MHD equilibriums numerically obtained using the Grad-Shafranov equation solver NIMEQ. Based on the new scaling for the elongation and the magnetic fields at the separatrix and the wall, the empirically stable limits for the compression ratio, the fusion gain, and the neutron yield are evaluated, which may serve as a more accurate estimate for the upper ceiling of performance from the magnetic com…
Definition of a New Level One Test Case Measurements of Equilibrium Radiation from an Inductively Coupled Plasma in the Near-UV to Near-IR Spectral Region for a Titan-Type N2-CH4 Mixture. Preliminary Results
In this letter, a phase transition of a non-equilibrated single component plasma evolving within a uniform constant magnetic field is demonstrated for the first time. We present classical fluid models that capture this phenomenon, confirm with N -particle simulations, derive constraints on parameters necessary to induce this phase transition, and suggest an experiment to test the novel predictions of the theory.
The nonlinear dynamics of collisionless non-neutral plasma without external stabilizing factors is considered. Time-dependent one-particle distribution functions of a Maxwellian type are obtained. The influence of initial conditions on the entropy production is discussed.
The Multi-region Relaxed MHD (MRxMHD) has been successful in the construction of equilibria in three-dimensional (3D) configurations. In MRxMHD, the plasma is sliced into sub-volumes separated by ideal interfaces, each undergoing relaxation, allowing the formation of islands and chaos. The resulting equilibrium has a stepped pressure profile across sub-volumes. The Stepped Pressure Equilibrium Code (SPEC) [S.R. Hudson et al., Phys. Plasmas 19, 112502 (2012)] was developed to calculate MRxMHD equilibria numerically. In this work, we have extended the SPEC code to compute MRxMHD equilibria with …
The pressure and internal energy of an ultracold plasma in a state of quasi-equilibrium are evaluated using classical molecular dynamics simulations. Coulomb collapse is avoided by modeling electron-ion interactions using an attractive Coulomb potential with a repulsive core. We present a method to separate the contribution of classical bound states, which form due to recombination, from the contribution of free charges when evaluating these thermodynamic state variables. It is found that the contribution from free charges is independent of the choice of repulsive core length-scale when it is …
The effects of nanosecond pulsed non-equilibrium plasma discharges on ignition characteristics and low-temperature chemistry or LTC of DME/O2/Ar mixtures are numerically investigated in a plane-to-plane geometry at a reduced pressure of 76 Torr. Detailed numerical investigations of the two-stage ignition process in different temperature regimes of DME have been created through a high-fidelity one-dimensional, multi-timescale plasma-discharge model. Two different initial temperatures are set for comparison: 550K, the negative temperature coefficient regime, where LTC plays a dominate role; 800K…
Recent results will be presented on steady states of magnetically confined plasmas obtained by conventional and Hamiltonian methods. The presentation consists of three parts. The first one concerns the derivation of a generalized Grad-Shafranov equation describing helically symmetric equilibria with pressure anisotropy and incompressible plasma flow of arbitrary direction with application to straight-stellarator configurations [1]. The impact of pressure anisotropy and flow on the equilibrium characteristics is also examined. In the second part the axisymmetric equilibrium code HELENA is exten…
A method is proposed to solve the Grad-Shafranov partial differential equation for the poloidal flux function associated with the equilibrium of a plasma magnetically confined in an axisymmetric torus under the assumption that the sources to the equilibrium (the gradient of the plasma pressure and the gradient of half the squared toroidal field function in flux space) are constant, and subjected to the condition of constant value of the poloidal flux at the toroidal boundary. The solution to the equation is written as the sum of the particular solution and a combination of N multipole solution…
Nontrivial topology in bulk matter has been linked with the existence of topologically protected interfacial states. We show that a gaseous plasmon polariton (GPP), an electromagnetic surface wave existing at the boundary of magnetized plasma and vacuum, has a topological origin that arises from the nontrivial topology of magnetized plasma. Because a gaseous plasma cannot sustain a sharp interface with discontinuous density, one must consider a gradual density falloff with scale length comparable or longer than the wavelength of the wave. We show that the GPP may be found within a gapped spect…
