Because currently the most popular method of calculating plasma self-consistent fields is an incomplete method which, strictly speaking, is not suitable to scientific investigation, we develop this method into be a complete reliable basic tool for scientific investigation. Here, the text after the pargraph around Eq.(7) have two different presentations, the presentation given latter is more concise and straightforward.

Considering the popularity of two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, a 2D model of plasma wakefield in the strongly nonlinear (bubble) regime in transversely non-uniform plasma is developed. A differential equation for the boundary of the bubble in the 2D geometry is obtained, its analytic solution is derived. 2D particle-in-cell simulations are used to confirm the validity of our model. The results are compared to the bubble in the realistic 3D geometry. For uniform plasma, it is shown that the 2D bubble is elongated and has stronger focusing forces, while the structure of the accelera…

Laboratoire de Physique des Plasmas, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Sorbonne Université, École polytechnique, Institut Polytechnique de Paris(等离子体物理实验室,法国国家科学研究中心,索邦大学,巴黎综合理工学院,巴黎理工学院)
In an expansion of a previous study [1], we apply inverse design methods to produce two-dimensional plasma metamaterial devices with realistic plasma elements which incorporate quartz envelopes, collisionality (loss), non-uniform density profiles, and resistance to experimental error/perturbation. Backpropagated finite difference frequency domain simulations are used to design waveguides and demultiplexers operating under the transverse magnetic polarization. Optimal devices with realistic elements are compared to previous devices with idealized elements, and several parameter initialization s…
Geodesic acoustic modes (GAM) are oscillating zonal structures unique to toroidal plasmas, and have been extensively studied in the past decades due to their potential capabilities of regulating microscopic turbulences and associated anomalous transport. This article reviews linear and nonlinear theories of GAM; with emphases on kinetic treatment, system nonuniformity and realistic magnetic geometry, in order to reflect the realistic experimental conditions. Specifically, in the linear physics, the resonant wave-particle interactions are discussed, with the application to resonant excitation b…
Nontrivial topology in bulk matter has been linked with the existence of topologically protected interfacial states. We show that a gaseous plasmon polariton (GPP), an electromagnetic surface wave existing at the boundary of magnetized plasma and vacuum, has a topological origin that arises from the nontrivial topology of magnetized plasma. Because a gaseous plasma cannot sustain a sharp interface with discontinuous density, one must consider a gradual density falloff with scale length comparable or longer than the wavelength of the wave. We show that the GPP may be found within a gapped spect…
A novel setup allows the Weibel instability and its interplay with the Biermann battery to be probed in laser-driven collisionless plasmas. Ab initio particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of the interaction of short ($ \le ps$) intense $(a_0 \ge 1)$ laser-pulses with overdense plasma targets show observable Weibel generated magnetic fields. This field strength surpasses that of the Biermann battery, usually dominant in experiments, as long as the gradient scale length is much larger than the local electron inertial length; this is achievable by carefully setting the appropriate gradients in the f…
Recent studies have outlined the interest for the evaluation of transport coefficients in space plasmas, where the observed velocity distributions of plasma particles are conditioned not only by the binary collisions, e.g., at low energies, but also by the energisation of particles from their interaction with wave turbulence and fluctuations, generating the suprathermal Kappa-distributed populations. This paper provides a first estimate of the main transport coefficients based on regularised Kappa distributions (RKDs), which, unlike standard Kappa distributions (SKDs), enable macroscopic param…
In this work, we have formulated and implemented a mixed unstructured mesh-based finite element (FE)-Fourier decomposition scheme for gyrokinetic simulations in realistic tokamak geometry. An efficient particle positioning (particle-triangle mapping) scheme for the charge deposition and field scattering using an intermediate grid as the search index for triangles has been implemented and a significant speed-up by a factor of $\sim30$ is observed as compared with the brute force scheme for a medium-size simulation. The TRIMEG (TRIangular MEsh based Gyrokinetic) code has been developed. As an ap…
Energetic particle (EP) driven instabilities will be of strongly increased relevance in future burning plasmas as the EP pressure will be very large compared to the thermal plasma. Understanding the interaction of EPs and bulk plasma is crucial for developing next-generation fusion devices. In this work, the JOREK MHD code is extended to allow for the simulation of EP instabilities at high EP pressures using realistic plasma and EP parameter in a full-f formulation with anisotropic pressure coupling to the bluid background. The code is first benchmarked linearly for the ITPA-TAE as well as the…
Finite-grid (or aliasing) instabilities are pervasive in particle-in-cell (PIC) plasma simulation algorithms, and force the modeler to resolve the smallest (Debye) length scale in the problem regardless of dynamical relevance. These instabilities originate in the aliasing of interpolation errors between mesh quantities and particles (which live in the space-time continuum). Recently, strictly energy-conserving PIC (EC-PIC) algorithms have been developed that promise enhanced robustness against aliasing instabilities. In this study, we confirm by analysis that EC-PIC is stable against aliasing …
This review presents an upgraded wave theory adapted to the high fluctuation level of driven realistic i.e. non-idealized plasmas. Above all, this means giving up the well-known concept of a linear wave theory in favor of a thoroughly nonlinear theory. Based on the author's early publication (H. Schamel, Plasma Phys. 14 (1972) 905) and supported by recent Vlasov-Poisson simulations of realistic noisy plasmas, an extended framework is presented which not only covers the essential features of coherent hole structures, but which also enables to make the necessary corrections to the current wave t…

New integral kernels describing the full-wave dielectric response of Maxwellian tokamak plasmas are presented. They realistically account for the rotational transform and for wave dispersion in presence of equilibrium magnetic field parallel gradients. These kernels rely on special functions of three variables that generalize the standard plasma dispersion function; their main analytical properties are given, leading to efficient evaluation. This approach is free from the poloidal Fourier mode expansion of the HF fields which appears in earlier formulations and gives complete freedom for the n…
We show that the transverse component of the wakefield can be produced with the application of an external magnetic field that generates radiation in the THz range. For this, we carry out analytical and numerical calculations to evaluate the components of the wakefield in a realistic situation of collisional plasma. We observe that the wakefield in the direction of the external magnetic field is produced, though the components of the wakefield are observed in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the laser and the magnetic field. Based on the approach of …

Electromagnetic turbulence is addressed in tokamak and stellarator plasmas with the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell codes ORB5 [E. Lanti et al, Comp. Phys. Comm, vol. 251, 107072 (2020)] and EUTERPE [V. Kornilov et al, Phys. Plasmas, vol. 11, 3196 (2004)]. The large-aspect-ratio tokamak, down-scaled ITER, and Wendelstein 7-X geometries are considered. The main goal is to increase the plasma beta, the machine size, the ion-to-electron mass ratio, as well as to include realistic-geometry features in such simulations. The associated numerical requirements and the computational cost for the ca…
In magnetically confined plasmas used in Tokamak, turbulence is responsible for specific transport that limits the performance of this kind of reactors. Gyrokinetic simulations are able to capture ion and electron turbulence that give rise to heat losses, but require also state-of-the-art HPC techniques to handle computation costs. Such simulations are a major tool to establish good operating regime in Tokamak such as ITER, which is currently being built. Some of the key issues to address more realistic gyrokinetic simulations are: efficient and robust numerical schemes, accurate geometric des…
The advent of ultra short high intensity lasers has paved the way to new and promising, yet challenging, areas of research in the laser-plasma interaction physics. The success of constructing petawatt femtosecond lasers, for instance the Apollon laser in France, will help understanding and designing future particle accelerators and next generation of light sources. Achieving this goal intrinsically relies on the combination between experiments and massively parallel simulations. So far, Particle-In-Cell (PIC) codes have been the ultimate tool to accurately describe the laser-plasma interaction…
Considering a realistic situation, where electron-neutral collisions persist in plasma, analytical calculations are carried out for the THz radiation generation by beating of two Skew Cosh-Gaussian (SG) lasers of parameters n & s. The competency of these lasers over Gaussian lasers is discussed in detail with respect to the effects of collision and beam width on the THz field amplitude and efficiency of the mechanism. A critical transverse distance of the peak of the THz field is defined that shows a dependence on the skewness parameter of skew ChG lasers. Although electron-neutral collisions …
Hamiltonian Particle Dynamics in Fusion Plasmas: Orbital Tomography and Spectrum Analysis for Energy and Momentum Transport under Resonant Non-Axisymmetric Perturbations
We discuss the phenomenon of energization of relativistic charged particles in three-dimensional (3D) incompressible MHD turbulence and the diffusive properties of the motion of the same particles. We show that the random electric field induced by turbulent plasma motion leads test particles moving in a simulated box to be accelerated in a stochastic way, a second-order Fermi process. A small fraction of these particles happen to be trapped in large-scale structures, most likely formed due to the interaction of islands in the turbulence. Such particles get accelerated exponentially, provided t…
Space plasmas are known to be out of (local) thermodynamic equilibrium, as observations show direct or indirect evidences of non-thermal velocity distributions of plasma particles. Prominent are the anisotropies relative to the magnetic field, anisotropic temperatures, field-aligned beams or drifting populations, but also, the suprathermal populations enhancing the high-energy tails of the observed distributions. Drifting bi-Kappa distribution functions can provide a good representation of these features and enable for a kinetic fundamental description of the dispersion and stability of these …
We have shown the simultaneous generation of macro-scale fast flows and strong magnetic fields in the 2-temperature relativistic electron-ion plasmas of astrophysical objects due to Unified Reverse Dynamo/Dynamo mechanism. The resulting dynamical magnetic field amplification and/or flow acceleration is directly proportional to the initial turbulent kinetic/magnetic (magnetic) energy; the process is very sensitive to relativistically hot electron-ion fraction temperature and magneto-fluid coupling. It is shown, that for realistic physical parameters of White Dwarfs accreting hot astrophysical f…
