Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are expected to play a significant role in the ongoing second quantum revolution, thanks to their stability and scalability. Still, major upgrades are needed for available PIC platforms to meet the demanding requirements of quantum devices. In this paper, we present a review of our recent progress in upgrading an unconventional silicon photonics platform towards such goal, including ultra-low propagation losses, low fibre coupling losses, integration of superconducting elements, Faraday rotators, fast and efficient detectors, as well as phase modulators with low loss and/or low energy consumption. We show the relevance of our developments and of our vision in two main applications: quantum key distribution - to achieve significantly higher key rates and large-scale deployment - and cryogenic quantum computers - to replace electrical connections to the cryostat with optical fibres.
Quantum photonics plays a crucial role in the development of novel communication and sensing technologies. Color centers hosted in silicon carbide and diamond offer single photon emission and long coherence spins that can be scalably implemented in quantum networks. We develop systems that integrate these color centers with photonic devices that modify their emission properties through electromagnetically tailored light and matter interaction.
We present the first demonstration of an integrated photonic phase-change memory using GeSbTe-225 on silicon-on-insulator and demonstrate reliable multilevel operation with a single programming pulse. We also compare our results on silicon with previous demonstrations on silicon nitride. Crucially, achieving this on silicon enables tighter integration of traditional electronics with photonic memories in future, making phase-change photonic memory a viable and integrable technology.
There has been a recently renewed interest in neuromorphic photonics, a field promising to access pivotal and unexplored regimes of machine intelligence. Progress has been made on isolated neurons and analog interconnects; nevertheless, this renewal has yet to produce a demonstration of a silicon photonic neuron capable of interacting with other like neurons. We report a modulator-class photonic neuron fabricated in a conventional silicon photonic process line. We demonstrate behaviors of transfer function configurability, fan-in, inhibition, time-resolved processing, and, crucially, autaptic …
The emerging applications of silicon photonics in free space, such as LiDARs and quantum photonics, urge versatile emission shaping beyond the capabilities of conventional grating couplers. A platform that offers arbitrary shaping of free-space emission while maintaining the CMOS compatibility and monolithic integration is in pressing need. Here we demonstrate a platform that integrates metasurfaces monolithically on silicon photonic integrated circuits. The metasurfaces consist of amorphous silicon nanopillars evanescently coupled to silicon waveguides. We demonstrate experimentally diffracti…
Quantum-dot (QD) nanolasers integrated on a silicon photonic circuit are demonstrated for the first time. QD nanolasers based on one-dimensional photonic crystal nanocavities containing InAs/GaAs QDs are integrated on CMOS-processed silicon waveguides cladded by silicon dioxide. We employed transfer-printing, whereby the three-dimensional stack of photonic nanostructures is assembled in a simple pick-and-place manner. Lasing operation and waveguide-coupling of an assembled single nanolaser are confirmed through micro-photoluminescence spectroscopy. Furthermore, by repetitive transfer-printing,…
Visible and near-infrared spectrum photonic integrated circuits are quickly becoming a key technology to address the scaling challenges in quantum information and biosensing. Thus far, integrated photonic platforms in this spectral range have lacked integrated photodetectors. Here, we report the first silicon nitride-on-silicon waveguide photodetectors that are monolithically integrated in a visible light photonic platform on silicon. Owing to a leaky-wave silicon nitride-on-silicon design, the devices achieved a high external quantum efficiency of > 60% across a record wavelength span from $λ…

We demonstrate integration of an amorphous silicon photodetector with thin film lithium niobate photonic platform operating in the visible wavelength range. We present the details of the design, fabrication, integration and experimental characterization of this metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector that features responsivity of 22 mA/W to 37mA/W over the wide optical bandwidth spanning 635 nm to 850 nm wavelengths range.
Integration of single-photon sources and detectors to silicon-based photonics opens the possibility of complex circuits for quantum information processing. In this work, we demonstrate integration of quantum dots with a silicon photonic add-drop filter for on-chip filtering and routing of telecom single photons. A silicon microdisk resonator acts as a narrow filter that transfers the quantum dot emission and filters the background over a wide wavelength range. Moreover, by tuning the quantum dot emission wavelength over the resonance of the microdisk we can control the transmission of the emit…
The ever-increasing demand for high speed and large bandwidth has made photonic systems a leading candidate for the next generation of telecommunication and radar technologies. The photonic platform enables high performance while maintaining a small footprint and provides a natural interface with fiber optics for signal transmission. However, producing sharp, narrow-band filters that are competitive with RF components has remained challenging. In this paper, we demonstrate all-silicon RF-photonic multi-pole filters with $\sim100\times$ higher spectral resolution than previously possible in sil…

We demonstrate that these photonic thermometers are a viable temperature sensing solution.
Flash memory technology is widely common in modern microelectronics, and is essentially affecting our daily life. Considering the recent progress in photonic circuitry, and in particular silicon photonics circuitry, there is now an opportunity to embed the flash memory technology in photonic applications. A particularly promising candidate that can benefit from such integration is the photonic resonator. As of today, chip scale resonators are essential building blocks in modern silicon photonic platform. However, their properties, and in particular their resonance frequencies deviate from thei…
Perturbations to the effective refractive index from nanometer-scale fabrication variations in waveguide geometry plague high index-contrast photonic platforms including the ubiquitous sub-micron silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process. Such variations are particularly troublesome for phase-sensitive devices such as interferometers and resonators, which exhibit drastic changes in performance as a result of these fabrication-induced phase errors. In this Letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a design methodology for dramatically reducing device sensitivity to silicon width variations. We…
Reliable operation of photonic integrated circuits at cryogenic temperatures would enable new capabilities for emerging computing platforms, such as quantum technologies and low-power cryogenic computing. The silicon-on-insulator platform is a highly promising approach to developing large-scale photonic integrated circuits due to its exceptional manufacturability, CMOS compatibility and high component density. Fast, efficient and low-loss modulation at cryogenic temperatures in silicon, however, remains an outstanding challenge, particularly without the addition of exotic nonlinear optical mat…
Efficient coupling of III-V light sources to silicon photonic circuits is one of the key challenges of integrated optics. Important requirements are low coupling losses, as well as small footprint and high yield of the overall assembly, along with the ability to use automated processes for large-scale production. In this paper, we demonstrate that photonic wire bonding addresses these challenges by exploiting direct-write two-photon lithography for in-situ fabrication of three-dimensional freeform waveguides between optical chips. In a series proof-of-concept experiments, we connect InP-based …
We present a silicon optical transmitter for polarization-encoded quantum key distribution (QKD). The chip was fabricated in a standard silicon photonic foundry process and integrated a pulse generator, intensity modulator, variable optical attenuator, and polarization modulator in a 1.3 mm $\times$ 3 mm die area. The devices in the photonic circuit meet the requirements for QKD. The transmitter was used in a proof-of-concept demonstration of the BB84 QKD protocol over a 5 km long fiber link.
The singlemode condition is one of the most important design rules for optical waveguides in guided-wave optics. The reason following the singlemode condition is that higher-order modes might be excited and thus introduce some undesired mode-mismatching loss as well as inter-mode crosstalk when light propagates along an optical waveguide beyond the singlemode regime. As a result, multimode photonic waveguides are usually not allowed. In this paper, we propose the concept of silicon photonics beyond the singlemode regime, developed with low-loss and low-crosstalk light propagation in multimode …

The fabricated 2D GCs operate in the telecom C-band and show an experimental coupling efficiency of -5 dB with a wafer variation of +/-1.2 dB. Possibilities for efficiency enhancement and improved performance stability in future design generations are outlined and extension towards O-band devices is investigated as …
Opto-mechanical interactions in planar photonic integrated circuits draw great interest in basic research and applications. However, opto-mechanics is practically absent in the most technologically significant photonics platform: silicon on insulator. Previous demonstrations required the under-etching and suspension of silicon structures. Here we present surface acoustic wave-photonic devices in silicon on insulator, up to 8 GHz frequency. Surface waves are launched through absorption of modulated pump light in metallic gratings and thermoelastic expansion. The surface waves are detected throu…
Silicon carbide (SiC) displays a unique combination of optical and spin-related properties that make it interesting for photonics and quantum technologies. However, guiding light by total internal reflection can be difficult to achieve, especially when SiC is grown as thin films on higher index substrates, like Silicon. Fabricating suspended, subwavelength waveguides requires a single lithography step and offers a solution to the confinement problem, while preserving the design flexibility required for a scalable and complete photonic platform. Here we present a design for such platform, that …
We develop and experimentally validate a novel neural network design framework for silicon photonics devices that is both practical and intuitive. The framework is applicable to nearly all known integrated photonics devices, but as case studies we consider simple waveguides and chirped Bragg Gratings. By using artificial neural networks, we decrease the computational cost relative to traditional design methodologies by more than 4 orders of magnitude. We also demonstrate the abstraction of the device models to a few simple input and output parameters relevant to designers. We then apply the re…

We report systematic studies of plasmonic and photonic guiding modes in large-area chemical-vapor-deposition-grown graphene on nanostructured silicon substrates. Light interaction in graphene with substrate photonic crystals can be classified into four distinct regimes depending on the photonic crystal lattice constant and the various modal wavelengths (i.e. plasmonic, photonic and free-space). By optimizing the design of the substrate, these resonant modes can magnify the graphene absorption in infrared wavelength, for efficient modulators, filters, sensors and photodetectors on silicon photo…
Quantum technology is poised to enable a step change in human capability for computing, communications and sensing. However, the system requires thousands of near-transparent components with ultra-low-latency control. For quantum technology to be implemented, a new paradigm photonic system is required: one with in-built coherence, stability, the ability to define arbitrary circuits, and a path to manufacturability. Silicon photonics has unparalleled d…
Integrated optical isolators have been a longstanding challenge for photonic integrated circuits (PIC). An ideal integrated optical isolator for PIC should be made by a monolithic process, have a small footprint, exhibit broadband and polarization-diverse operation, and be compatible with multiple materials platforms. Despite significant progress, the optical isolators reported so far do not meet all these requirements. In this article we present monolithically integrated broadband magneto-optical isolators on silicon and silicon nitride (SiN) platforms operating for both TE and TM modes with …

The majority of silicon photonics is built on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers while the majority of electronics, including CPUs and memory, are built on bulk silicon wafers, limiting broader acceptance of silicon photonics. This discrepancy is a result of silicon photonics's requirement for a single-crystalline silicon (c-Si) layer and a thick undercladding for optical guiding that bulk silicon wafers to not provide. While the undercladding problem can be partially addressed by substrate removal techniques, the complexity of co-integrating photonics with state-of-the-art transistors and real…
Chiral light matter interaction enables new fundamental researches and applications of light. The interaction has traditionally faced challenges in low directionality and efficiency based on spin orbit interaction of light in microscopic waveguides. It is pivotal to exploit photonic integrated circuits to efficiently engineer photonic chiral behavior. Here, we present ultra directional high efficient chiral coupling in silicon photonic circuits based on low order to high order mode conversion and interference. We show that the directionality of chiral coupling, in principle, can approach minus…
In this work, the radiation responses of silicon photonic passive devices built in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology are investigated through high energy neutron and 60Co gamma-ray irradiation. The wavelengths of both micro-ring resonators (MRRs) and Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) exhibit blue shifts after high-energy neutron irradiation to a fluence of 1*1012 n/cm2; the blue shift is smaller in MZI devices than in MRRs due to different waveguide widths. Devices with SiO2 upper cladding layer show strong tolerance to irradiation. Neutron irradiation leads to slight changes in the crys…

Programmable photonic integrated circuits (PICs) have recently gained significant interest due to their potential in creating next-generation technologies ranging from artificial neural networks and microwave photonics to quantum information processing. The fundamental building block of such programmable PICs is a tunable 2 x 2 switch, traditionally controlled by the thermo-optic or free-carrier dispersion. Yet, these implementations are power-hungry, volatile, and have a large footprint (typically > 100 um). Therefore, a truly 'set-and-forget' type 2 x 2 switch with zero static power consumpt…

We demonstrate an ultra-compact waveguide taper in Silicon Nitride platform. The proposed taper provides a coupling-efficiency of 95% at a length of 19.5 um in comparison to the standard linear taper of length 50 um that connects a 10 um wide waveguide to a 1 um wide photonic wire. The taper has a spectral response > 75% spanning over 800 nm and resilience to fabrication variations; >200 nm change in taper and end waveguide width varies transmission by <5%. We experimentally demonstrate taper insertion loss of <0.1 dB/transition for a taper as short as 19.5 um, and reduces the footprint of the…
Deterministic coupling of single solid-state emitters to nanocavities is the key for integrated quantum information devices. We here fabricate a photonic crystal cavity around a preselected single silicon-vacancy color center in diamond and demonstrate modification of the emitters internal population dynamics and radiative quantum efficiency. The controlled, room-temperature cavity coupling gives rise to a resonant Purcell enhancement of the zero-phonon transition by a factor of 19, coming along with a 2.5-fold reduction of the emitter's lifetime.
Emerging technologies based on tailorable interactions between photons and phonons promise new capabilities ranging from high-fidelity microwave signal processing to non-reciprocal optics and quantum state control. While such light-sound couplings have been studied in a variety of physical systems, many implementations rely on non-standard materials and fabrication schemes that are challenging to co-implement with standard integrated photonic circuitry. Notably, despite significant advances in integrated electro-optic modulators, related acousto-optic modulator concepts have remained relativel…

We present a novel silicon photonic parameter extraction tool that uses artificial neural networks. While other parameter extraction methods are restricted to relatively simple devices whose responses are easily modeled by analytic transfer functions, this method is capable of extracting parameters for any device with a discrete number of design parameters. To validate the method, we design and fabricate integrated chirped Bragg gratings. We then estimate the actual device parameters by iteratively fitting the simultaneously measured group delay and reflection profiles to the artificial neural…
The interaction of light with subwavelength metallic nano-structures is at the heart of different current scientific hot topics, namely plasmonics, metamaterials and nanoantennas. Research in these disciplines during the last decade has given rise to new, powerful concepts providing an unprecedented degree of control over light manipulation at the nanoscale. However, only recently have these concepts been used to increase the capabilities of light processing in current photonic integrated circuits (PICs), which traditionally rely only on dielectric materials with element sizes larger than the …
Time-correlated photon pairs are generated by triply-resonant Four-Wave-Mixing in a In$_{0.5}$Ga$_{0.5}$P Photonic Crystal cavitiy. Maximal efficiency is reached by actively compensating the residual spectral misalignment of the cavity modes. The generation rate reaches 5 MHz in cavities with Q-factor $\approx 4\times 10^4$, more than one order of magnitude larger than what is measured using ring resonators with similar Q factors fabricated on the same chip. The Photonic Crystal source is integrated on a Si photonic circuit, an important asset for applications in quantum technologies.

Finally, we discuss possible applications in nonlinear optics, optical interconnects, and quantum information science.
Quantum photonic integrated circuit (QPIC) is a promising tool for constructing integrated devices for quantum technology applications. In the optical regime, silicon photonics empowered by complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology provides optical components useful for realizing large-scale QPICs. Optical nonlinearity at the single-photon level is required for QPIC to facilitate photon-photon interaction. However, to date, realization of optical elements with deterministic( i.e., not probabilistic) single-photon nonlinearity by using silicon-based components is challenging, de…
