Following a proposal of Fukaya-Ono and the exploration by B. Parker, we introduce a new transversality condition, the FOP transversality condition, for sections of orbifold vector bundles $\mathcal{E} \rightarrow \mathcal{U}$ when both $\mathcal{E}$ and $\mathcal{U}$ have "normal complex structures." This notion allows one to define various integral virtual cycles on moduli spaces of pseudoholomorphic curves. Two immediate applications in symplectic topology are the definition of integer-valued Gromov-Witten type invariants in all genera for general compact symplectic manifolds using the global Kuranishi chart constructed by Abouzaid-McLean-Smith and Hirschi-Swaminathan, and an alternative proof of the cohomological splitting theorem for Hamiltonian fibrations over $S^2$ with integer coefficients by Abouzaid-McLean-Smith.
We use Donaldson hypersurfaces to construct pseudo-cycles which define Gromov-Witten invariants for any symplectic manifold which agree with the invariants in the cases where transversality could be achieved by perturbing the almost complex structure.
We characterize transversality, non-transversality properties on the moduli space of genus 0 stable maps to a rational projective surface. If a target space is equipped with a real structure, i.e, anti-holomorphic involution, then the results have real enumerative applications. Firstly, we can define a real version of Gromov-Witten invariants. Secondly, we can prove the invariance of Welschinger's invariant in algebraic geometric category.
We derive a numerical criterion for J-holomorphic curves in 4-dimensional symplectic cobordisms to achieve transversality without any genericity assumption. This generalizes results of Hofer-Lizan-Sikorav and Ivashkovich-Shevchishin to allow punctured curves with boundary that generally need not be somewhere injective or immersed. As an application, we combine this with the intersection theory of punctured holomorphic curves to prove that certain geometrically natural moduli spaces are globally smooth orbifolds, consisting generically of embedded curves, plus unbranched multiple covers that fo…
In this paper, one considers the change of orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants under weighted blow-up at smooth points. Some blow-up formula for Gromov-Witten invariants of symplectic orbifolds is proved. These results extend the results of manifolds case to orbifold case.
We provide an enumerative meaning of the mirror maps for toric Calabi-Yau orbifolds in terms of relative Gromov-Witten invariants of the toric compactifications. As a consequence, we obtain an equality between relative Gromov-Witten invariants and open Gromov-Witten invariants. Therefore, the instanton corrected mirrors for toric Calabi-Yau orbifolds can be constructed using relative Gromov-Witten invariants.
Virasoro constraints for orbifold Gromov-Witten theory are described. These constraints are applied to the degree zreo, genus zero orbifold Gromov-Witten potentials of the weighted projective stacks $\mathbb{P}(1,N)$, $\mathbb{P}(1,1,N)$ and $\mathbb{P}(1,1,1,N)$ to obtain formulas of descendant cyclic Hurwitz-Hodge integrals.
We propose a conjectural determination of the Gromov-Witten theory of a root stack along a smooth divisor. We verify our conjecture under an additional assumption.
We compute, by two methods, the genus one degree zero orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants with non-stacky insertions which are exceptional cases of the dilaton and divisor equations. One method involves a detailed analysis of the relevant moduli spaces. The other method, valid in the presence of torus actions with isolated fixed points, is virtual localization. These computations verify the conjectural evaluations of these invariants. Some genus one twisted orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants are also computed.
In the early 1990s, Borcea-Voisin orbifolds were some of the ear- liest examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds shown to exhibit mirror symmetry. However, their quantum theory has been poorly investigated. We study this in the context of the gauged linear sigma model, which in their case encom- passes Gromov-Witten theory and its three companions (FJRW theory and two mixed theories). For certain Borcea-Voisin orbifolds of Fermat type, we calculate all four genus zero theories explicitly. Furthermore, we relate the I-functions of these theories by analytic continuation and symplectic transfor- mation…
The construction of manifold structures and fundamental classes on the (compactified) moduli spaces appearing in Gromov-Witten theory is a long-standing problem. Up until recently, most successful approaches involved the imposition of topological constraints like semi-positivity on the underlying symplectic manifold to deal with this situation. One conceptually very appealing approach that removed most of these restrictions is the approach by K. Cieliebak and K. Mohnke via complex hypersurfaces, [CM07]. In contrast to other approaches using abstract perturbation theory, it has the advantage th…
Let $\ix$ be a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack over the complex numbers. One can define twisted orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of $\ix$ by considering multiplicative invertible characteristic classes of various bundles on the moduli spaces of stable maps $\ix_{g,n,d}$, cupping them with evaluation and cotangent line classes and then integrating against the virtual fundamental class. These are more general than the twisted invariants introduced by Tseng. We express the generating series of the twisted invariants in terms of the generating series of the untwisted ones. We derive the corollaries …
Let $\sf X$ be a symplectic orbifold groupoid with $\sf S$ being a symplectic sub-orbifold groupoid, and $\sf X_{\mathfrak a}$ be the weight-$\mathfrak a$ blowup of $\sf X$ along $\sf S$ with $\sf Z$ being the corresponding exceptional divisor. We show that there is a weighted blowup correspondence between some certain absolute orbifold Gromov--Witten invariants of $\sf X$ relative to $\sf S$ and some certain relative orbifold Gromov--Witten invariants of the pair $(\sf X_{\mathfrak a}|Z)$. As an application, we prove that the symplectic uniruledness of symplectic orbifold groupoids is a weigh…
Consider a compact symplectic sub-orbifold groupoid $\sf S$ of a compact symplectic orbifold groupoid $(\mathsf X,ω)$. Let $\mathsf X_{\mathfrak a}$ be the weight-$\mathfrak a$ blowup of $\sf X$ along $\sf S$, and $\mathsf D_{\mathfrak a}=\mathsf{PN}_{\mathfrak a}$ be the exceptional divisor, where $\sf N$ is the normal bundle of $\sf S$ in $\sf X$. In this paper we show that the absolute orbifold Gromov--Witten theory of $\mathsf X_{\mathfrak a}$ can be effectively and uniquely reconstructed from the absolute orbifold Gromov--Witten theories of $\sf X$, $\sf S$ and $\mathsf D_{\mathfrak a}$, …
We study open-closed orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau smooth toric Deligne-Mumford (DM) stacks (with possibly non-trivial generic stabilizers and semi-projective coarse moduli spaces) relative to Lagrangian branes of Aganagic-Vafa type. We present foundational materials of enumerative geometry of stable holomorphic maps from bordered orbifold Riemann surfaces to a 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau smooth toric DM stack with boundaries mapped into a Aganagic-Vafa brane. All genus open-closed Gromov-Witten invariants are defined by torus localization and depend on the choice …
We study the modularity of the genus zero open Gromov-Witten potentials and its generating matrix factorizations for elliptic orbifolds. These objects constructed by Lagrangian Floer theory are a priori well-defined only around the large volume limit. It follows from modularity that they can be analytically continued over the global Kähler moduli space.
We consider a mirror symmetry of simple elliptic singularities. In particular, we construct isomorphisms of Frobenius manifolds among the one from the Gromov--Witten theory of a weighted projective line, the one from the theory of primitive forms for a universal unfolding of a simple elliptic singularity and the one from the invariant theory for an elliptic Weyl group. As a consequence, we give a geometric interpretation of the Fourier coefficients of an eta product considered by K. Saito.
In this paper, we study modularity of several functions which naturally arose in a recent paper of Lau and Zhou on open Gromov-Witten potentials of elliptic orbifolds. They derived a number of examples of indefinite theta functions, and we provide modular completions for several such functions which involve more complicated objects than ordinary modular forms. In particular, we give new closed formulas for special indefinite theta functions of type $(1,2)$ in terms of products of mock modular forms. This formula is also of independent interest.
In this paper, we establish the convergence for Gromov-Witten invariant of elliptic orbifold $\mathbb{P}^1$ with type $(3,3,3), (4,4,2)$ and $(6,3,2)$. We also prove the mirror theorems of Gromov-Witten theory for those orbifolds and FJRW theory of elliptic singularities. Using T.Milanov and Y. Ruan's work, we prove the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence of all genera for the above three types of elliptic orbifold $\mathbb{P}^1$.
We prove that in closed almost complex manifolds of any dimension, generic perturbations of the almost complex structure suffice to achieve transversality for all unbranched multiple covers of simple pseudoholomorphic curves with deformation index zero. A corollary is that the Gromov-Witten invariants (without descendants) of symplectic 4-manifolds can always be computed as a signed and weighted count of honest J-holomorphic curves for generic tame J: in particular, each such invariant is an integer divided by a weighting factor that depends only on the divisibility of the corresponding homolo…
Polyfold theory, as developed by Hofer, Wysocki, and Zehnder, is a relatively new approach to resolving transversality issues that arise in the study of $J$-holomorphic curves in symplectic geometry. This approach has recently led to a well-defined Gromov-Witten invariant for $J$-holomorphic curves of arbitrary genus, and for all closed symplectic manifolds. The Gromov-Witten axioms, as originally described by Kontsevich and Manin, give algebraic relationships between the Gromov-Witten invariants. In this paper, we prove the Gromov-Witten axioms for the polyfold Gromov-Witten invariants.
Given a vector bundle $F$ on a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack $\X$ and an invertible multiplicative characteristic class $\bc$, we define the orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of $\X$ twisted by $F$ and $\bc$. We prove a "quantum Riemann-Roch theorem" which expresses the generating function of the twisted invariants in terms of the generating function of the untwisted invariants. A Quantum Lefschetz Hyperplane Theorem is derived from this by specializing to genus zero. As an application, we determine the relationship between genus-0 orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of $\X$ and that of a complet…
For a toric Calabi-Yau (CY) orbifold $\mathcal{X}$ whose underlying toric variety is semi-projective, we construct and study a non-toric Lagrangian torus fibration on $\mathcal{X}$, which we call the Gross fibration. We apply the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) recipe to the Gross fibration of $\mathcal{X}$ to construct its mirror with the instanton corrections coming from genus 0 open orbifold Gromov-Witten (GW) invariants, which are virtual counts of holomorphic orbi-disks in $\mathcal{X}$ bounded by fibers of the Gross fibration. We explicitly evaluate all these invariants by first proving an o…
We compute, with Symplectic Field Theory techniques, the Gromov-Witten theory of the complex projective line with orbifold points. A natural subclass of these orbifolds, the ones with polynomial quantum cohomology, gives rise to a family of (polynomial) Frobenius manifolds and integrable systems of Hamiltonian PDEs, which extend the (dispersionless) bigraded Toda hierarchy. We then define a Frobenius structure on the spaces of polynomials in three complex variables of the form F(x,y,z)= -xyz+P_1(x)+P_2(y)+P_3(z) which contains as special cases the ones constructed on the space of Laurent polyn…
Let $\CP^1_{k,m}$ be the orbifold structure on $\CP^1$ obtained via uniformizing the neighborhoods of 0 and $\infty$ respectively by $z\mapsto z^k$ and $w\mapsto w^m.$ The diagonal action of the torus on the projective line induces naturally an orbifold action on $\CP^1_{k,m}.$ In this paper we prove that if k and m are co-prime then Givental's prediction of the equivariant total descendent Gromov-Witten potential of $\CP^1_{k,m}$ satisfies certain Hirota Quadratic Equations (HQE for short). We also show that after an appropriate change of the variables, similar to Getzler's change in the equi…
In this paper, we consider natural geometric objects coming from Lagrangian Floer theory and mirror symmetry. Lau and Zhou showed that some of the explicit Gromov-Witten potentials computed by Cho, Hong, Kim, and Lau are essentially classical modular forms. Recent work by Zwegers and two of the authors determined modularity properties of several simpler pieces of the last, and most mysterious, function by developing several identities between functions with properties generalizing those of the mock modular forms in Zwegers' thesis. Here, we complete the analysis of all pieces of Cho, Hong, Kim…
Generalizing local Gromov-Witten theory, in this paper we define a local version of symplectic field theory. When the symplectic manifold with cylindrical ends is four-dimensional and the underlying simple curve is regular by automatic transversality, we establish a transversality result for all its multiple covers and discuss the resulting algebraic structures.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective algebraic variety. Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a $G$-banded gerbe with $G$ a finite abelian group. We prove an exact formula expressing genus $g$ orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathcal{G}$ in terms of those of $X$.
We construct an integrable hierarchy in the form of Hirota quadratic equations (HQE) that governs the Gromov--Witten (GW) invariants of the Fano orbifold projective curve $\mathbb{P}^1_{a_1,a_2,a_3}$. The vertex operators in our construction are given in terms of the $K$-theory of $\mathbb{P}^1_{a_1,a_2,a_3}$ via Iritani's $Γ$-class modification of the Chern character map. We also identify our HQEs with an appropriate Kac--Wakimoto hierarchy of ADE type. In particular, we obtain a generalization of the famous Toda conjecture about the GW invariants of $\mathbb{P}^1$ .
In this paper the Gromov-Witten invariants on a class of noncompact symplectic manifolds are defined by combining Ruan-Tian's method with that of McDuff-Salamon. The main point of the arguments is to introduce a method dealing with the transversality problems in the case of noncompact manifolds. Moreover, the techniques are also used to study the topological rigidity of Hamiltonian loops with compact support on a class of noncompact symplectic manifolds.
Let $\mathcal{X}_1$ and $\mathcal{X}_2$ be smooth proper Deligne-Mumford stacks with projective coarse moduli spaces. We prove a formula for orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of the product stack $\mathcal{X}_1\times \mathcal{X}_2$ in terms of Gromov-Witten invariants of the factors $\mathcal{X}_1$ and $\mathcal{X}_2$. As an application, we deduce a decomposition result for Gromov-Witten theory of trivial gerbes.
We give an approach for relative and degenerate Gromov--Witten invariants, inspired by that of Jun Li but replacing predeformable maps by transversal maps to a twisted target. The main advantage is a significant simplification in the definition of the obstruction theory. We reprove in our language the degeneration formula, extending it to the orbifold case.
The Steenrod problem for closed orientable manifolds was solved completely by Thom. Following this approach, we solve the Steenrod problem for closed orientable orbifolds, proving that the rational homology groups of a closed orientable orbifold have a basis consisting of classes represented by suborbifolds whose normal bundles have fiberwise trivial isotropy action. Polyfold theory, as developed by Hofer, Wysocki, and Zehnder, has yielded a well-defined Gromov-Witten invariant via the regularization of moduli spaces. As an application, we demonstrate that the polyfold Gromov-Witten invariants…
For each sphere with three orbifold points, we construct an algorithm to compute the open Gromov-Witten potential, which serves as the quantum-corrected Landau-Ginzburg mirror and is an infinite series in general. This gives the first class of general-type geometries whose full potentials can be computed. As a consequence we obtain an enumerative meaning of mirror maps for elliptic curve quotients. Furthermore, we prove that the open Gromov-Witten potential is convergent, even in the general-type cases, and has an isolated singularity at the origin, which is an important ingredient of proving …
This is the first in a sequence of papers in which we construct a quantum version of the Kirwan map from the equivariant quantum cohomology $QH_G(X)$ of a smooth complex projective variety X with the action of a connected complex reductive group $G$ to the orbifold quantum cohomology $QH(X//G)$ of its geometric invariant theory quotient $X//G$, and prove that it intertwines the genus zero gauged Gromov-Witten potential of X with the genus zero Gromov-Witten graph potential of $X//G$.
This paper gives methods for understanding invariants of symplectic quotients. The symplectic quotients considered here are compact symplectic manifolds (or more generally orbifolds), which arise as the symplectic quotients of a symplectic manifold by a compact torus. (A companion paper examines symplectic quotients by a nonabelian group, showing how to reduce to the maximal torus.) Let X be a symplectic manifold, with a Hamiltonian action of a compact torus T. The main topological result of this paper describes an explicit cobordism that exists between a symplectic quotient of X by T, and a c…
In this paper, we study the symplectic geometry of singular conifolds of the finite group quotient $$ W_r=\{(x,y,z,t)|xy-z^{2r}+t^2=0 \}/μ_r(a,-a,1,0), r\geq 1, $$ which we call orbi-conifolds. The related orbifold symplectic conifold transition and orbifold symplectic flops are constructed. Let $X$ and $Y$ be two symplectic orbifolds connected by such a flop. We study orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of exceptional classes on $X$ and $Y$ and show that they have isomorphic Ruan cohomologies. Hence, we verify a conjecture of Ruan.
There is a set of remarkable physical predictions for the structure of BCOV's higher genus B-model of mirror quintic 3-folds which can be viewed as conjectures for the Gromov-Witten theory of quintic 3-folds. They are (i) Yamaguchi--Yau's finite generation, (ii) the holomorphic anomaly equation, (iii) the orbifold regularity and (iv) the conifold gap condition. Moreover, these properties are expected to be universal properties for all the Calabi-Yau 3-folds. This article is devoted to proving first three conjectures. The main geometric input to our proof is a log GLSM moduli space and the comp…
We determine the homotopy type of isotropic torus complements in closed contact manifolds in terms of Reeb dynamics of special contact forms. For that we utilize holomorphic curve techniques known from symplectic field theory as Gromov-Hofer compactness and localized transversality on non-compact contact manifolds.
We completely characterize genus-0 K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of a compact complex algebraic manifold in terms of cohomological Gromov-Witten invariants of this manifold. This is done by applying (a virtual version of) the Kawasaki-Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formula for expressing holomorphic Euler characteristics of orbibundles on moduli spaces of genus-0 stable maps, analyzing the sophisticated combinatorial structure of inertia stacks of such moduli spaces, and employing various quantum Riemann--Roch formulas from "fake" (i.e. orbifold-ignorant) quantum K-theory of manifold and orbif…
We construct a sheaf of Fock spaces over the moduli space of elliptic curves E_y with Gamma_1(3)-level structure, arising from geometric quantization of H^1(E_y), and a global section of this Fock sheaf. The global section coincides, near appropriate limit points, with the Gromov-Witten potentials of local P^2 and of the orbifold C^3/mu_3. This proves that the Gromov-Witten potentials of local P^2 are quasi-modular functions for the group Gamma_1(3), as predicted by Aganagic-Bouchard-Klemm, and proves the Crepant Resolution Conjecture for [C^3/mu_3] in all genera.
Elements of the tropical vertex group, introduced by Kontsevich and Soibelman, are formal families of symplectomorphisms of the 2-dimensional algebraic torus. We prove ordered product factorizations in the tropical vertex group are equivalent to calculations of certain genus 0 relative Gromov-Witten invariants of toric surfaces. The relative invariants which arise have full tangency to a toric divisor at a single unspecified point. The method uses scattering diagrams, tropical curve counts, degeneration formulas, and exact multiple cover calculations in orbifold Gromov-Witten theory.
The main purpose of this paper is to summarize the basic ingredients, illustrated with examples, of a pseudoholomorphic curve theory for symplectic 4-orbifolds. These are extensions of relevant work of Gromov, McDuff and Taubes on symplectic 4-manifolds concerning pseudoholomorphic curves and Seiberg-Witten theory. They form the technical backbone of the proof that a symplectic s-cobordism of elliptic 3-manifolds (with a canonical contact structure on the boundary) is smoothly a product. One interesting feature of the theory is that existence of pseudoholomorphic curves gives certain restricti…
