The main purpose of this paper is to summarize the basic ingredients, illustrated with examples, of a pseudoholomorphic curve theory for symplectic 4-orbifolds. These are extensions of relevant work of Gromov, McDuff and Taubes on symplectic 4-manifolds concerning pseudoholomorphic curves and Seiberg-Witten theory. They form the technical backbone of the proof that a symplectic s-cobordism of elliptic 3-manifolds (with a canonical contact structure on the boundary) is smoothly a product. One interesting feature of the theory is that existence of pseudoholomorphic curves gives certain restrictions on the singular points of the 4-orbifold contained by the pseudoholomorphic curves. In the last section, we discuss applications (or potential ones) of the theory in some other problems such as symplectic finite group actions on 4-manifolds, symplectic circle actions on 6-manifolds, and algebraic surfaces with quotient singularities.
Let $Σ$ be a surface with a symplectic form, let $ϕ$ be a symplectomorphism of $Σ$, and let $Y$ be the mapping torus of $ϕ$. We show that the dimensions of moduli spaces of embedded pseudoholomorphic curves in $\R\times Y$, with cylindrical ends asymptotic to periodic orbits of $ϕ$ or multiple covers thereof, are bounded from above by an additive relative index. We deduce some compactness results for these moduli spaces. This paper establishes some of the foundations for a program with Michael Thaddeus, to understand the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology of $Y$ in terms of such pseudoholomorphic c…
The deformation problem for pseudoholomorphic curves and related geometrical properties of the total moduli space of pseudoholomorphic curves are studied. A sufficient condition for the saddle point property of the total moduli space is established. The local symplectic isotopy problem is formulated and solved for the case of imbedded pseudoholomorphic curves. It is shown that any two symplectically imbedded surfaces Sigma_0, Sigma_1 in CP^2 of the same degree d\le 6 are symplectically isotopic.
In this paper we study pseudoholomorphic curves with brake symmetry in symplectization of a closed contact manifold. We introduce the pseudoholomorphic curve with brake symmetry and the corresponding moduli space. Then we get the virtual dimension of the moduli space.
In the previous work, we introduced a method for constructing invariant probability measures of a large class of non-singular volume-preserving flows on closed, oriented odd-dimensional smooth manifolds with pseudoholomorphic curve techniques from symplectic geometry. The technique requires existence of certain pseudoholomorphic curves satisfying some weak assumptions. In this work, we appeal to Gromov-Witten theory and Seiberg-Witten theory to construct large classes of examples where these pseudoholomorphic curves exist. Our argument uses neck stretching along with new analytical tools from …
I give precise iteration formulae for brake orbit in dimension 3 and use these formulae to get some index inequalities for moduli spaces of Real pseudoholomorphic Curves, which are important to establish Real embedded contact homology and Real cylindrical contact homology in dimension 3.
We give a new proof of Mikhalkin's Theorem on the topological classification of simple Harnack curves, which in particular extends Mikhalkin's result to real pseudoholomorphic curves.
Here we extend the notion of target-local Gromov convergence of pseudoholomorphic curves to the case in which the target manifold is not compact, but rather is exhausted by compact neighborhoods. Under the assumption that the curves in question have uniformly bounded area and genus on each of the compact regions (but not necessarily global bounds), we prove a subsequence converges in an exhaustive Gromov sense.
This paper and its sequel prove a generalization of the usual gluing theorem for two index 1 pseudoholomorphic curves u_+ and u_- in the symplectization of a contact 3-manifold. We assume that for each embedded Reeb orbit gamma, the total multiplicity of the negative ends of u_+ at covers of gamma agrees with the total multiplicity of the positive ends of u_- at covers of gamma. However, unlike in the usual gluing story, here the individual multiplicities are allowed to differ. In this situation, one can often glue u_+ and u_- to an index 2 curve by inserting genus zero branched covers of R-in…
This article describes various moduli spaces of pseudoholomorphic curves on the symplectization of a particular overtwisted contact structure on S^1 x S^2. This contact structure appears when one considers a closed self dual form on a 4-manifold as a symplectic form on the complement of its zero locus. The article is focussed mainly on disks, cylinders and three-holed spheres, but it also supplies groundwork for a description of moduli spaces of curves with more punctures and non-zero genus.
We study the intersection theory of punctured pseudoholomorphic curves in $4$-dimensional symplectic cobordisms. We first study the local intersection properties of such curves at the punctures. We then use this to develop topological controls on the intersection number of two curves. We also prove an adjunction formula which gives a topological condition that will guarantee a curve in a given homotopy class is embedded, extending previous work of Hutchings. We then turn our attention to curves in the symplectization $\mathbb{R}\times M$ of a $3$-manifold $M$ admitting a stable Hamiltonian str…
Let M be an almost complex manifold equipped with a Hermitian form such that its de Rham differential has Hodge type (3,0)+(0,3), for example a nearly Kahler manifold. We prove that any connected component of the moduli space of pseudoholomorphic curves on M is compact. This can be used to study pseudoholomorphic curves on a 6-dimensional sphere with the standard (G_2-invariant) almost complex structure.
This survey article, in honor of G. Tian's 60th birthday, is inspired by R. Pandharipande's 2002 note highlighting research directions central to Gromov-Witten theory in algebraic geometry and by G. Tian's complex-geometric perspective on pseudoholomorphic curves that lies behind many important developments in symplectic topology since the early 1990s.
A notion of dual curve for pseudoholomorphic curves in 4--manifolds turns out to be possible only if the notion of almost complex structure structure is slightly generalized. The resulting structure is as easy (perhaps easier) to work with, and yields many analogues of results in complex surface theory, using a description of the local geometry via Cartan's method of equivalence. Duality then uncovers a new infinite-dimensional family of geometric integrable systems. These are the first steps toward geometry on moduli spaces of pseudoholomorphic curves.
We prove that every $C^\infty$-smooth, area preserving diffeomorphism of the closed 2-disk having not more than one periodic point is the uniform limit of periodic $C^\infty$-smooth diffeomorphisms. In particular every smooth irrational pseudo-rotation can be $C^0$-approximated by integrable systems. This partially answers a long standing question of A. Katok regarding zero entropy Hamiltonian systems in low dimensions. Our approach uses pseudoholomorphic curve techniques from symplectic geometry.
We introduce a method for constructing invariant probability measures of a large class of non-singular volume-preserving flows on closed, oriented odd-dimensional smooth manifolds using pseudoholomorphic curve techniques from symplectic geometry. These flows include any non-singular volume preserving flow in dimension three, and autonomous Hamiltonian flows on closed, regular energy levels in symplectic manifolds of any dimension. As an application, we use our method to prove the existence of obstructions to unique ergodicity for this class of flows, generalizing results of Taubes and Ginzburg…
We show the intersection of a compact almost complex subvariety of dimension $4$ and a compact almost complex submanifold of codimension $2$ is a $J$-holomorphic curve. This is a generalization of positivity of intersections for $J$-holomorphic curves in almost complex $4$-manifolds to higher dimensions. As an application, we discuss pseudoholomorphic sections of a complex line bundle. We introduce a method to produce $J$-holomorphic curves using the differential geometry of almost Hermitian manifolds. When our main result is applied to pseudoholomorphic maps, we prove the singularity subset o…
We prove a compactness theorem for holomorphic curves in 4-dimensional symplectizations that have embedded projections to the underlying 3-manifold. It strengthens the cylindrical case of the SFT compactness theorem by using intersection theory to show that degenerations of such sequences never give rise to multiple covers or nodes, so transversality is easily achieved. This has application to the theory of stable finite energy foliations, and also suggests a new approach to defining SFT-type invariants for contact 3-manifolds, or more generally, 3-manifolds with stable Hamiltonian structures.
This paper and its prequel ("Part I") prove a generalization of the usual gluing theorem for two index 1 pseudoholomorphic curves U_+ and U_- in the symplectization of a contact 3-manifold. In this situation, one can often glue U_+ and U_- to an index 2 curve by inserting genus zero branched co…
We prove that in closed almost complex manifolds of any dimension, generic perturbations of the almost complex structure suffice to achieve transversality for all unbranched multiple covers of simple pseudoholomorphic curves with deformation index zero. A corollary is that the Gromov-Witten invariants (without descendants) of symplectic 4-manifolds can always be computed as a signed and weighted count of honest J-holomorphic curves for generic tame J: in particular, each such invariant is an integer divided by a weighting factor that depends only on the divisibility of the corresponding homolo…
According to Taubes, the Gromov invariants of a symplectic four-manifold X with b_+ > 1 satisfy the duality Gr(A) = +/- Gr(K-A), where K is Poincare dual to the canonical class. Extending joint work with Simon Donaldson in math.SG/0012067, we interpret this result in terms of Serre duality on the fibres of a Lefschetz pencil, by proving an analogous symmetry for invariants counting sections of associated bundles of symmetric products. Using similar methods we give a new proof of an existence theorem for symplectic surfaces in four-manifolds with b_+ = 1 and b_1 = 0. This reproves another theor…
In this survey article, we present the analysis of pseudoholomorphic curves $u:(\dot Σ,j) \to (Q \times \mathbb{R}, \widetilde J)$ on the symplectization of contact manifold $(Q,λ)$ as a subcase of the analysis of contact instantons $w:\dot Σ\to Q$, i.e., of the maps $w$ satisfying the equation $$ {\bar{\partial}}^πw = 0, \, d(w^*λ\circ j) = 0 $$ on the contact manifold $(Q,λ)$, which has been carried out by a coordinate-free covariant tensorial calculus. When the analysis is applied to that of pseudoholomorphic curves $u = (w,f)$ with $w = π_Q \circ u$, $f = s\circ u$ on symplectization, the …
For a closed oriented smooth 4-manifold X with $b^2_+(X)>0$, the Seiberg-Witten invariants are well-defined. Taubes' "SW=Gr" theorem asserts that if X carries a symplectic form then these invariants are equal to well-defined counts of pseudoholomorphic curves, Taubes' Gromov invariants. In the absence of a symplectic form there are still nontrivial closed self-dual 2-forms which vanish along a disjoint union of circles and are symplectic elsewhere. This paper and its sequel describes well-defined counts of pseudoholomorphic curves in the complement of the zero-set of such "near-symplectic" for…
This article mainly aims to overview the recent efforts on developing algebraic geometry for an arbitrary compact almost complex manifold. We review the results obtained by the guiding philosophy that a statement for smooth maps between smooth manifolds in terms of René Thom's transversality should also have its counterpart in pseudoholomorphic setting without requiring genericity of the almost complex structures. These include intersection of compact almost complex submanifolds, structure of pseudoholomorphic maps, zero locus of certain harmonic forms, and eigenvalues of Laplacian. In additio…
In this paper we extend the notion of the Kobayashi-Royden pseudonorm for almost complex manifolds. Its basic properties known from the complex analysis are preserved in the nonintegrable case as well. The main theorem on coincidence of the pseudodistance induced by this pseudonorm with the Kobayashi pseudodistance for the almost complex manifold is equivalent to the possibility of deforming slightly a pseudoholomorphic disk in an almost complex manifold. We also describe the result in terms of h-principle and consider a geometric application for moduli spaces of pseudoholomorphic curves.
The paper is devoted to the study of the orientability of the moduli spaces of real pseudoholomorphic curves in real symplectic manifolds. We begin by extending the results we obtained in \cite{article1}. Namely, we consider a complex vector bundle $(N,c_N)$ equipped with a real structure over a real curve $(Σ_g,c_Σ)$ of genus $g \in \NN$, and we give a description of the action of an automorphism of $(N,c_N)$ on the orientations of the determinant bundle over the space of all Cauchy-Riemann operators on $(N,c_N)$. In the second part, we use the previous decription to compute the first Stiefel…
For a given singularity of a plane curve we consider the locus of nodal deformations of the singularity with the given number of nodes and describe possible components of the locus. As applications, we solve the local symplectic isotopy for nodal curves in a neighborhood of a given pseudoholomorphic curve without multiple components and prove the uniqueness of the symplectic isotopy class for nodal pseudoholomorphic curves of low genus in $\CP^2$ and $\CP^2 # \bar\CP^2$.
The symplectic isotopy conjecture states that every smooth symplectic surface in $CP^2$ is symplectically isotopic to a complex algebraic curve. Progress began with Gromov's pseudoholomorphic curves [Gro85], and progressed further culminating in Siebert and Tian's proof of the conjecture up to degree 17 [ST05], but further progress has stalled. In this article we provide a new direction of attack on this problem. Using a solution to a nodal symplectic isotopy problem we guide model symplectic isotopies of smooth surfaces. This results in an equivalence between the smooth symplectic isotopy pro…
We define a new family of open Gromov-Witten type invariants based on intersection theory on the moduli space of pseudoholomorphic curves of arbitrary genus with boundary in a Lagrangian submanifold. We assume the Lagrangian submanifold arises as the fixed points of an anti-symplectic involution and has dimension 2 or 3. In the strongly semi-positive genus 0 case, the new invariants coincide with Welschinger's invariant counts of real pseudoholomorphic curves. Furthermore, we calculate the new invariant for the real quintic threefold in genus 0 and degree 1 to be 30.
We study the relation between $J$-anti-invariant $2$-forms and pseudoholomorphic curves in this paper. We show the zero set of a closed $J$-anti-invariant $2$-form on an almost complex $4$-manifold supports a $J$-holomorphic subvariety in the canonical class. This confirms a conjecture of Draghici-Li-Zhang. A higher dimensional analogue is established. We also show the dimension of closed $J$-anti-invariant $2$-forms on an almost complex $4$-manifold is a birational invariant, in the sense that it is invariant under degree one pseudoholomorphic maps.
A study of certain symplectic $4$-orbifolds with vanishing canonical class is initiated. We show that for any such symplectic $4$-orbifold $X$, there is a canonically constructed symplectic $4$-orbifold $Y$, together with a cyclic orbifold covering $Y\rightarrow X$, such that $Y$ has at most isolated Du Val singularities and a trivial orbifold canonical line bundle. The minimal resolution of $Y$, to be denoted by $\tilde{Y}$, is a symplectic Calabi-Yau $4$-manifold endowed with a natural symplectic finite cyclic action, extending the deck transformations of the orbifold covering $Y\rightarrow …
It's known from from work of Hofer, Wysocki, and Zehnder [1996] and Bourgeois [2002] that in a contact manifold equipped with either a nondegenerate or Morse-Bott contact form, a finite-energy pseudoholomorphic curve will be asymptotic at each of its non removable punctures to a single periodic orbit of the Reeb vector field and that the convergence is exponential. We provide examples here to show that this need not be the case if the contact form is degenerate. More specifically, we show that on any contact manifold $(M, ξ)$ with cooriented contact structure one can choose a contact form $λ$ …
Inspired by the log Gromov-Witten (or GW) theory of Gross-Siebert/Abramovich-Chen, we introduce a geometric notion of log J-holomorphic curve relative to a simple normal crossings symplectic divisor defined in [FMZ1]. Every such moduli space is characterized by a second homology class, genus, and contact data. For certain almost complex structures, we show that the moduli space of stable log J-holomorphic curves of any fixed type is compact and metrizable with respect to an enhancement of the Gromov topology. In the case of smooth symplectic divisors, our compactification is often smaller than…
Continuing the program of math.SG/0012067 and math.SG/0310450, we introduce refinements of the Donaldson-Smith standard surface count which are designed to count nodal pseudoholomorphic curves and curves with a prescribed decomposition into reducible components. In cases where a corresponding analogue of the Gromov-Taubes invariant is easy to define, our invariants agree with those analogues. We also prove a vanishing result for some of the invariants that count nodal curves.
We investigate the failure of Bézout's Theorem for two symplectic surfaces in $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^2$ (and more generally on an algebraic surface), by proving that every plane algebraic curve $C$ can be perturbed in the $\mathscr{C}^1$-topology to an arbitrarily close smooth symplectic surface $C_ε$ with the property that the cardinality $\#C_ε\cap Z_d$ of the transversal intersection of $C_ε$ with an algebraic plane curve $Z_d$ of degree $d$, as a function of $d$ can grow arbitrarily fast. As a consequence we obtain that, although Bézout's Theorem is true for pseudoholomorphic curves with re…
We study the generalization of quasipositive links from the three-sphere to arbitrary closed, orientable three-manifolds. Our main result shows that the boundary of any smooth, properly embedded complex curve in a Stein domain is a quasipositive link. This generalizes a result due to Boileau and Orevkov, and it provides the first half of a topological characterization of links in three-manifolds which bound complex curves in a Stein filling. Our arguments replace pseudoholomorphic curve techniques with a study of characteristic and open book foliations on surfaces in three- and four-manifolds.
$\mathcal{H}-$holomorphic curves are solutions of a specific modification of the pseudoholomorphic curve equation in symplectizations involving a harmonic $1-$form as perturbation term. In this paper we compactify the moduli space of $\mathcal{H}-$holomorphic curves with a priori bounds on the harmonic $1-$forms.
We prove a result which establishes restrictions on the pseudoholomorphic curves which can exist in a stable Hamiltonian manifold in the presence of certain $\mathbb{R}$-invariant foliations of the symplectization by holomorphic hypersurfaces. This result has applications in the first author's work on algebraic torsion in higher dimensional contact manifolds.
$\mathcal{H}-$holomorphic curves are solutions of a specific modification of the pseudoholomorphic curve equation in symplectizations involving a harmonic $1-$form as perturbation term. In this paper we study the asymptotics of $\mathcal{H}-$holomorphic curves defined on a sequence of degenerating cylinders.
We classify rational cuspidal curves of degrees 6 and 7 in the complex projective plane, up to symplectic isotopy. The proof uses topological tools, pseudoholomorphic techniques, and birational transformations.
This is the second of five papers that construct an isomorphism between the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology and the Heegaard Floer homology of a given compact, oriented 3-manifold. The isomorphism is given as a composition of three isomorphisms; the first of these relates a version of embedded contact homology on an an auxillary manifold to the Heegaard Floer homology on the original. This paper describes this auxilliary manifold, its geometry, and the relationship between the generators of the embedded contact homology chain complex and those of the Heegaard Floer chain complex. The pseudoholom…
We give detailed descriptions of gluing pseudoholomorphic maps in symplectic geometry, especially in the presence of an obstruction bundle. The main motivation is to try to compare the symplectic and enumerative invariants of algebraic manifolds. These descriptions can also be used to enumerate rational curves with high-order degeneracies of local nature in projective spaces.
We derive a numerical criterion for J-holomorphic curves in 4-dimensional symplectic cobordisms to achieve transversality without any genericity assumption. This generalizes results of Hofer-Lizan-Sikorav and Ivashkovich-Shevchishin to allow punctured curves with boundary that generally need not be somewhere injective or immersed. As an application, we combine this with the intersection theory of punctured holomorphic curves to prove that certain geometrically natural moduli spaces are globally smooth orbifolds, consisting generically of embedded curves, plus unbranched multiple covers that fo…
This are the notes of a course, given by the first author for the Graduiertenkollegs (=graduate students) at the Ruhr-University Bochum, in December 1997. These lectures pursued two main tasks: FIRST - to give a systematic and self-contained introduction to the Gromov theory of pseudoholomorphic curves. This is done in Chapters I,II,III. SECOND - to explain our join results on envelopes of meromorphy of real surfaces in complex two-dimensional manifolds. We do this in Chapter IV.
We compute quantum cohomology ring of elliptic $\mathbb{P}^1$ orbifolds via orbi-curve counting. The main technique is the classification theorem which relates holomorphic orbi-curves with certain orbifold coverings. The countings of orbi-curves are related to the integer solutions of Diophantine equations. This reproduces the computation of Satake and Takahashi in the case of $\mathbb{P}^1_{3,3,3}$ via different method.
We develop a method for preserving pseudoholomorphic curves in contact 3-manifolds under surgery along transverse links. This makes use of a geometrically natural boundary value problem for holomorphic curves in a 3-manifold with stable Hamiltonian structure, where the boundary conditions are defined by 1-parameter families of totally real surfaces. The technique is applied here to construct a finite energy foliation for every closed overtwisted contact 3-manifold.
We present recursive formulas which compute the recently defined "higher symplectic capacities" for all convex toric domains. In the special case of four-dimensional ellipsoids, we apply homological perturbation theory to the associated filtered L-infinity algebras and prove that the resulting structure coefficients count punctured pseudoholomorphic curves in cobordisms between ellipsoids. As sample applications, we produce new previously inaccessible obstructions for stabilized embeddings of ellipsoids and polydisks, and we give new counts of curves with tangency constraints.
