Mutation of compact silting objects is a fundamental operation in the representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras due to its connections to cluster theory and to the lattice of torsion pairs in module or derived categories. In this paper we develop a theory of mutation in the broader framework of silting or cosilting t-structures in triangulated categories. We show that mutation of pure-injective cosilting objects encompasses the classical concept of mutation for compact silting complexes. As an application we prove that any minimal inclusion of torsion classes in the category of finitely generated modules over an artinian ring corresponds to an irreducible mutation. This generalises a well-known result for functorially finite torsion classes.
We introduce and study mutation of torsion pairs, as a generalization of mutation of cluster tilting objects, rigid objects and maximal rigid objects. It is proved that any mutation of a torsion pair is again a torsion pair. A geometric realization of mutation of torsion pairs in the cluster category of type $A_n$ or $A_{\infty}$ is given via rotation of Ptolemy diagrams.
Mutation of torsion pairs in triangulated categories and its combinatorial interpretation for the cluster category of Dynkin type $A_n$ and of type $A_\infty$ have been studied by Zhou and Zhu. In this paper we present a combinatorial model for mutation of torsion pairs in the cluster category of Dynkin type $D_n$, using Ptolemy diagrams of Dynkin type $D_n$ which were introduced by Holm, Jørgensen and Rubey.
Let T be a Hom-finite triangulated Krull-Schmidt category over a field k. Inspired by a definition of Koenig and Liu, we say that a family S of pairwise orthogonal objects in T with trivial endomorphism rings is a simple-minded system if its closure under extensions is all of T. We construct torsion pairs in T associated to any subset X of a simple-minded system S, and use these to define left and right mutations of S relative to X. When T has a Serre functor ν, and S and X are invariant under ν[1], we show that these mutations are again simple-minded systems. We are particularly interested in…
We define mutation pair in a pseudo-triangulated category. We prove that under certain conditions, for a mutation pair in a pseudo-triangulated category, the corresponding quotient category carries a natural triangulated structure. This result unifies many previous constructions of quotient triangulated categories.
We develop silting theory of a noetherian algebra $Λ$ over a commutative noetherian ring $R$. We study mutation theory of $2$-term silting complexes of $Λ$, and as a consequence, we see that mutation exists. As in the case of finite dimensional algebras, functorially finite torsion classes of $Λ$ bijectively correspond to silting $Λ$-modules, if $R$ is complete local. We show a reduction theorem of $2$-term silting complexes of $Λ$, and by using this theorem, we study torsion classes of the module category of $Λ$. When $R$ has Krull dimension one, we describe the set of torsion classes of $Λ$ …
We define mutation pair in an n-angulated category and prove that given such a mutation pair, the corresponding quotient category carries a natural n-angulated structure. This result generalizes a theorem of Iyama-Yoshino in classical triangulated category. As an application, we obtain that the quotient category of a Frobenius n-angulated category is also an n-angulated category.
The exchange graph of a 2-acyclic quiver is the graph of mutation-equivalent quivers whose edges correspond to mutations. When the quiver admits a nondegenerate Jacobi-finite potential, the exchange graph admits a natural acyclic orientation called the oriented exchange graph, as shown by Brüstle and Yang. The oriented exchange graph is isomorphic to the Hasse diagram of the poset of functorially finite torsion classes of a certain finite dimensional algebra. We prove that lattices of torsion classes are semidistributive lattices, and we use this result to conclude that oriented exchange graph…
We investigate conditions for when the $t$-structure of Happel-Reiten-Smalø associated to a torsion pair is a compactly generated $t$-structure. The concept of a $t$CG torsion pair is introduced and for any ring $R$, we prove that $\mathbf{t}=(\mathcal{T},\mathcal{F})$ is a $t$CG torsion pair in $R\text{-Mod}$ if, and only if, there exists, $\{T_λ\}$ a set of finitely presented $R$-modules in $\mathcal{T}$, such that $\mathcal{F}=\bigcap \text{Ker}({\text{Hom}}_{R}(T_λ,?))$. We also show that every $t$CG torsion pair is of finite type, and show that the reciprocal is not true. Finally, we give…
In this article, we study localizations of hearts of cotorsion pairs (U,V) where U is rigid on an extriangulated category B. The hearts of such cotorsion pairs are equivalent to the functor categories over the stable category of U. Inspired by Marsh and Palu, we consider the mutation of U that induces a cotorsion pair (U',V'). Generally speaking, the hearts of (U,V) and (U',V') are not equivalent to each other, but we will give a generalized pseudo-Morita equivalence between certain localizations of their hearts.
We introduce diagrams for $m$-cluster categories which we call "horizontal" and "vertical" mutation fans. These are analogous to the mutation fans (also known as "semi-invariant pictures" or "scattering diagrams") for the standard ($m=1$) cluster case which are dual to the poset of finitely generated torsion classes. The purpose of these diagrams is to visualize mutations and analogues of maximal green sequences in the $m$-cluster category with special emphasis on the $c$-vectors (the "brick" labels).
It is a result of Gabriel that hereditary torsion pairs in categories of modules are in bijection with certain filters of ideals of the base ring, called Gabriel filters or Gabriel topologies. A result of Jans shows that this bijection restricts to a correspondence between (Gabriel filters that are uniquely determined by) idempotent ideals and TTF triples. Over the years, these classical results have been extended in several different directions. In this paper we present a detailed and self-contained exposition of an extension of the above bijective correspondences to additive functor categori…
For a recollement $(\mathcal{A},\mathcal{B},\mathcal{C})$ of abelian categories, we show that torsion pairs in $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{C}$ can induce torsion pairs in $\mathcal{B}$; and the converse holds true under certain conditions.
We give a simultaneous generalization of exact categories and triangulated categories, which is suitable for considering cotorsion pairs, and which we call extriangulated categories. Extension-closed, full subcategories of triangulated categories are examples of extriangulated categories. We give a bijective correspondence between some pairs of cotorsion pairs which we call Hovey twin cotorsion pairs, and admissible model structures. As a consequence, these model structures relate certain localizations with certain ideal quotients, via the homotopy category which can be given a triangulated st…
As a general framework for the studies of $t$-structures on triangulated categories and torsion pairs in abelian categories, we introduce the notions of extriangulated categories with negative first extensions and $s$-torsion pairs. We define a heart of an interval in the poset of $s$-torsion pairs, which naturally becomes an extriangulated category with a negative first extension. This notion generalizes hearts of $t$-structures on triangulated categories and hearts of twin torsion pairs in abelian categories. In this paper, we show that an interval in the poset of $s$-torsion pairs is biject…
We define torsion pairs for quasi-abelian categories and give several characterisations. We show that many of the torsion theoretic concepts translate from abelian categories to quasi-abelian categories. As an application, we generalise the recently defined algebraic Harder-Narasimhan filtrations to quasi-abelian categories.
In this article, we prove that if $(\mathcal A ,\mathcal B,\mathcal C)$ is a recollement of extriangulated categories, then torsion pairs in $\mathcal A$ and $\mathcal C$ can induce torsion pairs in $\mathcal B$, and the converse holds under natural assumptions. Besides, we give mild conditions on a cluster tilting subcategory on the middle category of a recollement of extriangulated categories, for the corresponding abelian quotients to form a recollement of abelian categories.
In this article, we generalize the concept of torsion pairs and study its structure. As a trial of obtaining all torsion pairs, we decompose torsion pairs by projective modules and injective modules. Then we calculate torsion pairs on the algebra KAn and tub categories. At last we try to find all torsion pairs on the module categories of finite dimensional hereditary algebras.
It is a well established fact that the notions of quasi-abelian categories and tilting torsion pairs are equivalent. This equivalence fits in a wider picture including tilting pairs of $t$-structures. Firstly, we extend this picture into a hierarchy of $n$-quasi-abelian categories and $n$-tilting torsion classes. We prove that any $n$-quasi-abelian category admits a derived category endowed with a $n$-tilting pair of $t$-structures such that the respective hearts are derived equivalent. Secondly, we describe the hearts of these $t$-structures as quotient categories of coherent functors, genera…
In this paper, we study ICE-closed (= Image-Cokernel-Extension-closed) subcategories of an abelian length category using torsion classes. To each interval $[\mathcal{U},\mathcal{T}]$ in the lattice of torsion classes, we associate a subcategory $\mathcal{T} \cap \mathcal{U}^\perp$ called the heart. We show that every ICE-closed subcategory can be realized as a heart of some interval of torsion classes, and give a lattice-theoretic characterization of intervals whose hearts are ICE-closed. In particular, we prove that ICE-closed subcategories are precisely torsion classes in some wide subcatego…
We generalize the tilting process by Happel, Reiten and Smalø to the setting of finitely presented modules over right coherent rings. Moreover, we extend the characterization of quasi-tilted artin algebras as the almost hereditary ones to all right noetherian rings.
We show that if $X$ is a smooth quasi-projective $3$-fold admitting a flopping contraction, then the fundamental group of an associated simplicial hyperplane arrangement acts faithfully on the derived category of $X$. The main technical advance is to use torsion pairs as an efficient mechanism to track various objects under iterations of the flop functor (respectively, mutation functor). This allows us to relate compositions of the flop functor (respectively, mutation functor) to the theory of Deligne normal form, and to give a criterion for when a finite composition of $3$-fold flops can be u…
For any quiver mutation sequence, we define a pair of matrices that describe a fixed point equation of a cluster transformation determined from the mutation sequence. We give an explicit relationship between this pair of matrices and the Jacobian matrix of the cluster transformation. Furthermore, we show that this relationship reduces to a relationship between the pair of matrices and the $C$-matrix of the cluster transformation in a certain limit of cluster variables. As an application, we prove that quivers associated with once-punctured surfaces do not have maximal green or reddening sequen…
We study IE-closed subcategories of a module category, subcategories which are closed under taking Images and Extensions. We investigate the relation between IE-closed subcategories and torsion pairs, and characterize $τ$-tilting finite algebras using IE-closed subcategories. For the hereditary case, we show that IE-closed subcategories can be classified by twin rigid modules, pairs of rigid modules satisfying some homological conditions. Moreover, we introduce mutation of twin rigid modules analogously to tilting modules, which gives a way to calculate all twin rigid modules for the represent…
Important objects of study in $τ$-tilting theory include the $τ$-tilting pairs over an algebra on the form $kQ/I$, with $kQ$ being a path algebra and $I$ an admissible ideal. In this paper, we study aspects of the combinatorics of mutation quivers of support $τ$-tilting pairs, simply called mutation quivers. In particular, we are interested in identifying connected components of the underlying graphs of such quivers. We give a class of algebras with two simple modules such that every algebra in the class has at most two connected components in its mutation quiver, generalizing a result by Demo…
We give a complete classification of torsion pairs in the cluster categories associated to tubes of finite rank. The classification is in terms of combinatorial objects called Ptolemy diagrams which already appeared in our earlier work on torsion pairs in cluster categories of Dynkin type A. As a consequence of our classification we establish closed formulae enumerating the torsion pairs in cluster tubes, and obtain that the torsion pairs in cluster tubes exhibit a cyclic sieving phenomenon.
We give a combinatorial classification of cluster tilting subcategories and torsion pairs in Igusa--Todorov cluster categories of Dynkin type $A_{ \infty }$.
We classify compactly generated co-t-structures on the derived category of a commutative noetherian ring. In order to accomplish that, we develop a theory for compactly generated Hom-orthogonal pairs (also known as torsion pairs in the literature) in triangulated categories that resembles Bousfield localization theory. Finally, we show that the category of perfect complexes over a connected commutative noetherian ring admits only the trivial co-t-structures and (de)suspensions of the canonical co-t-structure and use this to describe all silting objects in the category.
In the setting of compactly generated triangulated categories, we show that the heart of a (co)silting t-structure is a Grothendieck category if and only if the (co)silting object satisfies a purity assumption. Moreover, in the cosilting case the previous conditions are related to the coaisle of the t-structure being a definable subcategory. If we further assume our triangulated category to be algebraic, it follows that the heart of any nondegenerate compactly generated t-structure is a Grothendieck category.
We give a complete classification of (co)torsion pairs in finite $2$-Calabi-Yau triangulated categories with maximal rigid objects which are not cluster tilting. These finite $2$-Calabi-Yau triangulated categories are divided into two main classes: one denoted by $\mathcal{A}_{n,t}$ called of type $A$, and the other denoted by $D_{n,t}$ called of type $D$. By using the geometric model of cluster categories of type $A, $ or type $D$, we give a geometric description of (co)torsion pairs in $\mathcal{A}_{n,t}$ or $D_{n,t}$ respectively, via defining the periodic Ptolemy diagrams. This allows to c…
The class of support $τ$-tilting modules was introduced recently by Adachi, Iyama and Reiten. These modules complete the class of tilting modules from the point of view of mutations. Given a finite dimensional algebra $A$, we study all basic support $τ$-tilting $A$-modules which have given basic $τ$-rigid $A$-module as a direct summand. We show that there exist an algebra $C$ such that there exists an order-preserving bijection between these modules and all basic support $τ$-tilting $C$-modules; we call this process $τ$-tilting reduction. An important step in this process is the formation of $…
Let $A$ be a finite-dimensional algebra over a field of characteristic $p>0$. We use a functorial approach involving torsion pairs to construct embeddings of endomorphism algebras of basic projective $A$--modules $P$ into those of the torsion submodules of $P$. As an application, we show that blocks of both the classical and quantum Schur algebras $S(2,r)$ and $S_q(2,r)$ are Morita equivalent as quasi-hereditary algebras to their Ringel duals if they contain $2p^k$ simple modules for some $k$.
In this paper we introduce a local-refinement procedure to investigate stability data on an abelian category, and provide a sufficient and necessary condition for a stability data to be finest. We classify all the finest stability data for the categories of coherent sheaves over certain weighted projective curves, including the classical projective line, smooth elliptic curves and certain weighted projective lines. As applications, we obtain a classification of torsion pairs for these categories via stability data approach. As a by-product, a new proof for the classification of torsion pairs i…
We give an interpretation of the map $π^c$ defined by Reading, which is a map from the elements of a Coxeter group to the $c$-sortable elements, in terms of the representation theory of preprojective algebras. Moreover, we study a close relationship between $c$-sortable elements and torsion pairs, and give an explicit description of the cofinite torsion classes in the context of the Coxeter group. As a consequence, we give a proof of some conjectures proposed by Oppermann, Reiten, and the second author.
We give a complete classification of torsion pairs in the cluster category of Dynkin type D_n, via a bijection to new combinatorial objects called Ptolemy diagrams of type D. For the latter we give along the way different combinatorial descriptions. One of these allows us to count the number of torsion pairs in the cluster category of type D_n by providing their generating function explicitly.
The theory of $τ$-tilting was introduced by Adachi--Iyama--Reiten; one of the main results is a bijection between support $τ$-tilting modules and torsion classes. We are able to generalise this result in the context of the higher Auslander--Reiten theory of Iyama. For a finite-dimensional algebra $A$ with 2-cluster-tilting subcategory $\mathcal{C}\subseteq\mathrm{mod}A$, we are able to find a correspondence between support $τ_2$-tilting $A$-modules and torsion pairs in $\mathcal{C}$ satisfying an additional functorial finiteness condition.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for torsion pairs in a hereditary category to be in bijection with $t$-structures in the bounded derived category of that hereditary category. We prove that the existence of a split $t$-structure with nontrivial heart in a semiconnected Krull-Schmidt category implies that this category is equivalent to the derived category of a hereditary category. We construct a bijection between split torsion pairs in the module category of a tilted algebra having a complete slice in the preinjective component with corresponding $t$-structures. Finally, we classify…
We extend Ng's characterisation of torsion pairs in the 2-Calabi-Yau triangulated category generated by a 2-spherical object to the characterisation of torsion pairs in the w-Calabi-Yau triangulated category, $T_w$, generated by a w-spherical object for any integer w. Inspired by the combinatorics of $T_w$ for w < 0, we also characterise the torsion pairs in a certain w-Calabi-Yau orbit category of the bounded derived category of the path algebra of Dynkin type A.
We give a complete classification of torsion pairs in the cluster category of Dynkin type A_n. Along the way we give a new combinatorial description of Ptolemy diagrams, an infinite version of which was introduced by Ng. This allows us to count the number of torsion pairs in the cluster category of type A_n. We also count torsion pairs up to Auslander-Reiten translation.
