2D materials have intriguing quantum phenomena that are distinctively different from their bulk counterparts. Recently, epitaxially synthesized wafer-scale 2D metals, composed of elemental atoms, are attracting attention not only for their potential applications but also for exotic quantum effects such as superconductivity. By mapping momentum-resolved electronic states using time-resolved and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we reveal that monolayer Ag confined between bilayer graphene and SiC is a large gap (> 1 eV) 2D semiconductor, consistent with GW-corrected density functional theory. The measured valence band dispersion matches the DFT-GW quasiparticle band. However, the conduction band dispersion shows an anomalously large effective mass of 2.4 m0. Possible mechanisms for this large enhancement in the apparent mass are discussed.
We describe recent experimental efforts to perform polarization-resolved optical spectroscopy of monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductors in very large pulsed magnetic fields to 65 tesla. The experimental setup and technical challenges are discussed in detail, and temperature-dependent magneto-reflection spectra from atomically thin tungsten disulphide (WS$_2$) are presented. The data clearly reveal not only the valley Zeeman effect in these 2D semiconductors, but also the small quadratic exciton diamagnetic shift from which the very small exciton size can be directly inferred.…
Moiré superlattices of two-dimensional van der Waals materials have emerged as a powerful platform for designing electronic band structures and discovering emergent physical phenomena. A key concept involves the creation of long-wavelength periodic potential and moiré bands in a crystal through interlayer hybridization when two materials are overlaid. Here we demonstrate a new approach based on spatially periodic dielectric screening to create moiré bands in a monolayer semiconductor. It relies on reduced dielectric screening of the Coulomb interactions in monolayer semiconductors and their en…
Three-dimensional confinement allows semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) to exhibit size-tunable electronic and optical properties that enable a wide range of opto-electronic applications from displays, solar cells and bio-medical imaging to single-electron devices. Additional modalities such as spin and valley properties can provide further degrees of freedom requisite for quantum information and spintronics. When seeking to combine these material features into QD structures, however, confinement can cause hybridization that inhibits the robustness of these emergent properties for insertion into…
In semiconductor physics, many essential optoelectronic material parameters can be experimentally revealed via optical spectroscopy in sufficiently large magnetic fields. For monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, this field scale is substantial --tens of teslas or more-- due to heavy carrier masses and huge exciton binding energies. Here we report absorption spectroscopy of monolayer MoS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, MoTe$_2$, and WS$_2$ in very high magnetic fields to 91~T. We follow the diamagnetic shifts and valley Zeeman splittings of not only the exciton's $1s$ ground state but also …
A new two-dimensional (2D) layered material, namely, titanium trisulfide (TiS$_3$) monolayer sheet, is predicted to possess desired electronic properties for nanoelectronic applications. On basis of the first-principles calculations within the framework of density functional theory and deformation theory, we show that the TiS$_3$ 2D crystal is a direct gap semiconductor with a band gap of 1.06 eV and high carrier mobility. More remarkably, the in-plane electron mobility of the 2D TiS$_3$ is highly anisotropic, amounting to $\sim$10,000 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ in the \emph{b} direction, which is…
Heterojunctions between three-dimensional (3D) semiconductors with different bandgaps are the basis of modern light-emitting diodes, diode lasers, and high-speed transistors. Creating analogous heterojunctions between different two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors would enable band engineering within the 2D plane and open up new realms in materials science, device physics and engineering. Here we demonstrate that seamless high-quality in-plane heterojunctions can be grown between the 2D monolayer semiconductors MoSe2 and WSe2. The junctions, grown by lateral hetero-epitaxy using physical vapor …
We report magneto-absorption spectroscopy of gated WSe$_2$ monolayers in high magnetic fields up to 60~T. When doped with a 2D Fermi sea of mobile holes, well-resolved sequences of optical transitions are observed in both $σ^\pm$ circular polarizations, which unambiguously and separately indicate the number of filled Landau levels (LLs) in both $K$ and $K'$ valleys. This reveals the interaction-enhanced valley Zeeman energy, which is found to be highly tunable with hole density $p$. We exploit this tunability to align the LLs in $K$ and $K'$, and find that the 2D hole gas becomes unstable agai…
Using a spatially-resolved optical pump-probe experiment, we measure the lateral transport of spin/valley polarized electrons over very long distances (tens of micrometers) in a single WSe2 monolayer. By locally pumping the Fermi sea of 2D electrons to a high degree of spin/valley polarization (up to 75%) using circularly-polarized light, the lateral diffusion of the electron polarization can be mapped out via the photoluminescence induced by a spatially-separated and linearly-polarized probe laser. Up to 25% spin-valley polarization is observed at pump-probe separations up to 20 microns. Char…
Using time-resolved optical Kerr rotation, we measure the low temperature valley dynamics of resident electrons and holes in exfoliated WSe$_2$ monolayers as a systematic function of carrier density. In an effort to reconcile the many disparate timescales of carrier valley dynamics in monolayer semiconductors reported to date, we directly compare the doping-dependent valley relaxation in two electrostatically-gated WSe$_2$ monolayers having different dielectric environments. In a fully-encapsulated structure (hBN/WSe$_2$/hBN, where hBN is hexagonal boron nitride), valley relaxation is found to…
We report 65 tesla magneto-absorption spectroscopy of exciton Rydberg states in the archetypal monolayer semiconductor WSe$_2$. The strongly field-dependent and distinct energy shifts of the 2s, 3s, and 4s excited neutral excitons permits their unambiguous identification and allows for quantitative comparison with leading theoretical models. Both the sizes (via low-field diamagnetic shifts) and the energies of the $ns$ exciton states agree remarkably well with detailed numerical simulations using the non-hydrogenic screened Keldysh potential for 2D semiconductors. Moreover, at the highest magn…
The monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are an emergent semiconductor platform exhibiting rich excitonic physics with coupled spin-valley degree of freedom and optical addressability. Here, we report a new series of low energy excitonic emission lines in the photoluminescence spectrum of ultraclean monolayer WSe2. These excitonic satellites are composed of three major peaks with energy separations matching known phonons, and appear only with electron doping. They possess homogenous spatial and spectral distribution, strong power saturation, and anomalously long population (> 6 $μ$s) and…
We investigate the optical control possibilities of spin-valley qubit carried by single electrons localized in nanostructures of monolayer TMDs, including small quantum dots formed by lateral heterojunction and charged impurities. The quantum controls are discussed when the confinement induces valley hybridization and when the valley hybridization is absent. We show that the bulk valley and spin optical selection rules can be inherited in different forms in the two scenarios, both of which allow the definition of spin-valley qubit with desired optical controllability. We also investigate nucle…
Spin-1 condensed matter systems characterized by the combination of a Dirac-like dispersion and flat bands are ideal for realizing high-temperature electronics and spintronic technologies in the absence of external magnetic field. In this study, we propose a three-band tight binding model, with spin-polarized Haldane-like next-nearest-neighbour tunnelling, on dice lattice and show that spin-1 Dirac half-metal, spin-1 Dirac spin-gapless semiconductor, and spin-polarized spin-1 massive Dirac dispersion with nontrivial topology can exist in two-dimensional ferromagnetic condensed matter systems w…
We examine the structural properties of free standing II-VI and III-V semiconductors at the monolayer limit within first principle density functional theory calculations. A non-polar buckled structure was found to be favoured over a polar buckled structure. While an obvious reason for this may be traced to the contribution from dipole dipole interactions present in the polar structure which would destabilize it with respect to the nonpolar structure, Coulomb interactions between electrons on the cations and anions are found to be the reason for the nonpolar structure to be favoured. A route to…
Electron valleys in transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers drive novel physics and allow designing multifunctional architectures for applications. We propose to manipulate the electron valleys in these systems for spin/valley filter and valve devices through band engineering. Instead of the magnetic proximity effect that has been extensively used in previous studies, in our strategy, the electron valleys are directly coupled to the spin-polarized states of the two-dimensional ferromagnets. We find that this coupling results in a valley-selective gap opening due to the spin-momentum locking…
The coupling between spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom plays an important role in a wide range of fundamental phenomena. Monolayer semiconducting transitional metal dichalcogenides have emerged as an outstanding platform for studying these coupling effects because they possess unique spin-valley locking physics for hosting rich excitonic species and the reduced screening for strong Coulomb interactions. Here, we report the observation of multiple valley phonons, phonons with momentum vectors pointing to the corners of the hexagonal Brillouin zone, and the resulting exciton complexes…
Moiré excitons are emergent optical excitations in 2D semiconductors with deep moiré superlattice potentials. While these excitations have been realized in several platforms, a system with dynamically tunable moiré potential to tailor the moiré exciton properties is yet to be realized. Here, we present a continuously tunable moiré potential in a monolayer WSe2 that is enabled by its proximity to twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) near the magic-angle. Due to its flat electronic bands, charge distribution is highly localized and forms a triangular lattice in TBG. Tuning the local charge density via…
Auger recombination in semiconductors is a many-body phenomenon in which recombination of electrons and holes is accompanied by excitation of other charge carriers. Being nonradiative, it is detrimental to light emission. The excess energy of the excited carriers is normally rapidly converted to heat, making Auger processes difficult to probe directly. Here, we employ a technique in which the Auger-excited carriers are detected by their ability to tunnel out of the semiconductor through a thin barrier, generating a current. We employ vertical van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures with monolayer…
Most optoelectronic devices operate at high photocarrier densities, where all semiconductors suffer from enhanced nonradiative recombination. Nonradiative processes proportionately reduce photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY), a performance metric that directly dictates the maximum device efficiency. Although transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers exhibit near-unity PL QY at low exciton densities, nonradiative exciton-exciton annihilation (EEA) enhanced by van-Hove singularity (VHS) rapidly degrades their PL QY at high exciton densities and limits their utility in practical appl…
The electronic properties of ultrathin crystals of molybdenum disulfide consisting of N = 1, 2, ... 6 S-Mo-S monolayers have been investigated by optical spectroscopy. Through characterization by absorption, photoluminescence, and photoconductivity spectroscopy, we trace the effect of quantum confinement on the material's electronic structure. With decreasing thickness, the indirect band gap, which lies below the direct gap in the bulk material, shifts upwards in energy by more than 0.6 eV. This leads to a crossover to a direct-gap material in the limit of the single monolayer. Unlike the bulk…
We investigate Landau-quantized excitonic absorption and luminescence of monolayer WSe$_2$ under magnetic field. We observe gate-dependent quantum oscillations in the bright exciton and trions (or exciton-polarons) as well as the dark trions and their phonon replicas. Our results reveal spin- and valley-polarized Landau levels (LLs) with filling factors $n = +0, +1$ in the bottom conduction band and $n = -0$ to $-6$ in the top valence band, including the Berry-curvature-induced $n = \pm0$ LLs of massive Dirac fermions. The LL filling produces periodic plateaus in the exciton energy shift accom…
Two-dimension (2D) semiconductor materials have attracted much attention and research interest for their novel properties suitable for electronic and optoelectronic applications. In this paper, we have proposed an idea in new 2D materials design by using adjacent group elements to substitute half of the atoms in the primitive configurations to form isoelectronic compounds. We have successfully taken this idea on group V monolayers and have obtained many unexplored Group IV-V-VI monolayer compounds: P2SiS, As2SiS, As2GeSe, Sb2GeSe, Sb2SnTe, and Bi2SnTe. Relative formation energy calculations, p…
Metal/semiconductor interfaces govern the operation of semiconductor devices through the formation of charge injection barriers that can be controlled by tuning the metal work function. However, the controlling ability is typically limited to being static. We show that a dynamic nature can be imparted to the interfaces using electrode surface modification with a structurally disordered molecular monolayer. The barrier height at the interfaces is altered significantly in a reversible way by an external electric field. As a result, a dramatic change in the carrier transport properties through th…
We study theoretically the non-equilibrium exciton transport in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. We consider the situation where excitons interact with non-equilibrium phonons, e.g., under the conditions of localized excitation where a ``hot spot'' in formed. We develop the theory of the exciton drag by the phonons and analyze in detail the regimes of diffusive propagation of phonons and ballistic propagation of phonons where the phonon wind is formed. We demonstrate that a halo-like spatial distribution of excitons akin observed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 207401 (2018)] can be forme…
Tightly bound excitons in monolayer semiconductors represent a versatile platform to study two-dimensional propagation of neutral quasiparticles. Their intrinsic properties, however, can be severely obscured by spatial energy fluctuations due to a high sensitivity to the immediate environment. Here, we take advantage of the encapsulation of individual layers in hexagonal boron nitride to strongly suppress environmental disorder. Diffusion of excitons is then directly monitored using time- and spatially-resolved emission microscopy at ambient conditions. We consistently find very efficient prop…
Room-temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor is vital in nonvolatile digital circuits and it can provide an idea system where we can make use of both charge and spin of electrons. However, seeking room-temperature ferromagnetic semiconductors is still just an appealing idea that has never been realized in practice up to now. Here we demonstrate that graphene monolayer, hybridized with underlying Ni(111) substrate, is the room-temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor that has been continuously searched for decades. Our spin-polarized scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) experiments, complemented…
Two-dimensional (2D) intrinsic ferromagnetic semiconductors are expected to stand out in the spintronic field. Recently, the monolayer VI$_{3}$ has been experimentally synthesized but the weak ferromagnetism and low Curie temperature ($T_C$) limit its potential application. Here we report that the Janus structure can elevate the $T_C$ to 240 K. And it is discussed that the reason for high $T_C$ in Janus structure originates from the lower virtual exchange gap between $t_{2g}$ and $e_{g}$ states of nearest-neighbor V atoms. Besides, $T_C$ can be further substantially enhanced by tensile strain …
We present first-principles results on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of a new family of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AFM) manganese chalcogenides, namely monolayer MnX and Janus XMnY (X, Y= S, Se, Te), among which monolayer MnSe was recently synthesized in experiments [\href{https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acsnano.1c05532}{ACS Nano 15 (8),13794 (2021)}]. By carrying out calculations of the phonon dispersion and \textit{ab-initio} molecular dynamics simulations, we first confirmed that these systems, characterized by an unconventional strongly coupled bilayer at…
We theoretically investigate the energy of the ground state exciton confined to two-dimensional (2D) monolayers with circular shape. Within an effective mass approach employing a nonlocal screening effect on the Coulomb potential energy, we demonstrate how the exciton energy is correlated with the radius of the circle, electron-hole reduced mass, and 2D susceptibility. In addition, we show that a dead layer around the circle edge, into which the electron-hole pair cannot penetrate, is necessary for understanding the energy shift recently observed in monolayer WSe2 quantum dots.
In 2D-semiconductor-based field-effect transistors and optoelectronic devices, metal-semiconductor junctions are one of the crucial factors determining device performance. The Fermi-level (FL) pinning effect, which commonly caused by interfacial gap states, severely limits the tunability of junction characteristics, including barrier height and contact resistance. A tunneling contact scheme has been suggested to address the FL pinning issue in metal-2D-semiconductor junctions, whereas the experimental realization is still elusive. Here, we show that an oxidized-monolayer-enabled tunneling barr…
The optoelectronic properties of atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides are strongly correlated with the presence of defects in the materials, which are not necessarily detrimental for certain applications. For instance, defects can lead to an enhanced photoconduction, a complicated process involving charge generation and recombination in the time domain and carrier transport in the spatial domain. Here, we report the simultaneous spatial and temporal photoconductivity imaging in two types of WS2 monolayers by laser-illuminated microwave impedance microscopy. The diffusion length and…
In sharp contrast to the prevailing view that electric fields promote water freezing, here we show by molecular dynamics simulations that monolayer ice confined between two parallel plates can melt into liquid water under perpendicularly applied electric field. The melting temperature of the monolayer ice decreases with the increasing strength of the external field due to field-induced disruption of the water-wall interaction induced well-ordered network of hydrogen bond. This electromelting process should add an important new ingredient to the physics of water.
We perform systematic investigation on the geometric, energetic and electronic properties of group IV-VI binary monolayers (XY), which are the counterparts of phosphorene, by employing density functional theory based electronic structure calculations. For this purpose, we choose the binary systems XY consisting of equal numbers of group IV (X = C, Si, Ge, Sn) and group VI elements (Y = O, S, Se, Te) in three geometrical configurations, the puckered, buckled and planar structures. The results of binding energy calculations show that all the binary systems studied are energetically stable. It is…
Recently, two-dimensional ferromagnetic semiconductors have been an important class of materials for many potential applications in spintronic devices. Based on density functional theory, we systematically explore the magnetic and electronic properties of CrGeS$_3$ with the monolayer structures. The comparison of total energy between different magnetic states ensures the ferromagnetic ground state of monolayer CrGeS$_3$. It is also shown that ferromagnetic and semiconducting properties are exhibited in monolayer CrGeS$_3$ with the magnetic moment of 3 $μ_{B}$ for each Cr atom, donated mainly b…
Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), especially MoS2 and WS2 recently attract extensive attentions due to their rich physics and great potential applications. Superior to graphene, MS2 (M = Mo/W) monolayers have a native direct energy gap in visible frequency range. This promises great future of MS2 for optoelectronics. To exploit properties and further develop more applications, producing large-scale single crystals of MS2 by a facile method is highly demanded. Here, we report the synthesis of large-scale triangular single crystals of WS2 monolayer from a chemical vap…
Based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation eigenstates, we present a first-principles many-body formalism for calculating the two-photon absorption (TPA) coefficient of semiconductors. We apply this formalism to calculate the TPA spectra of MoS2 and WS2 monolayers. The all-electron full-potential linearised augmented-plane wave based functions are used for solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation. The calculated spectra are in good agreement with the available experimental ones for WS2 monolayer. The calculated TPA spectra exhibit significant excitonic effects when compared to those based on the independ…
We study theoretically weak localization of excitons in atomically-thin transition metal dichalcogenides. The constructive interference of excitonic de Broglie waves on the trajectories forming closed loops results in a decrease of the exciton diffusion coefficient. We calculate the interference contribution to the diffusion coefficient for the experimentally relevant situation of exciton scattering by acoustic phonons and static disorder. For the acoustic phonon scattering, the quantum interference becomes more and more important with increasing the temperature. Our estimates show that the qu…
Two-dimensional (2D) topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) were recently predicted in thin films of the SnTe class of IV-VI semiconductors, which can host metallic edge states protected by mirror symmetry. As thickness decreases, quantum confinement effect will increase and surpass the inverted gap below a critical thickness, turning TCIs into normal insulators. Surprisingly, based on first-principles calculations, here we demonstrate that (001) monolayers of rocksalt IV-VI semiconductors XY (X=Ge, Sn, Pb and Y= S, Se, Te) are 2D TCIs with the fundamental band gap as large as 260 meV in mo…
Engineering the electromagnetic environment of a nanoscale light emitter by a photonic cavity can significantly enhance its spontaneous emission rate through cavity quantum electrodynamics in the Purcell regime. This effect can greatly reduce the lasing threshold of the emitter, providing the ultimate low-threshold laser system with small footprint, low power consumption and ultrafast modulation. A state-of-the-art ultra-low threshold nanolaser has been successfully developed though embedding quantum dots into photonic crystal cavity (PhCC). However, several core challenges impede the practica…
We propose that a half semiconducting state can exist in trigonal-prismatic transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers of d$^{1}$ configuration. In that state both electrons and holes are spin polarized and share the same spin channel. On the basis of hybrid density functional theory, we predict in particular that VS$_2$ monolayers are half semiconductors with a direct band gap. Moreover, we find that the conduction electron spin orientation of VS$_2$ switches under moderate strain. Our predictions thus open up intriguing possibilities for applications of VS$_2$ in spintronics and optoe…
We propose a new 2D semiconductor material (TTA-2D) based on the molecular structure of Thiophene-Tetrathia-Annulene (TTA). The TTA-2D structural, electronic, and optical properties were investigated using \textit{ab initio} methods. Our results show that TTA-2D is a small indirect bandgap semiconductor ($0.6$ eV). A semiconductor-metal transition can be induced by applying a uniaxial strain. Our results also show that TTA-2D is thermally stable up to $T=1000$ K. TTA-2D absorbs in a large spectral range, from infrared to ultraviolet regions. Values of refractive index and reflectivity show tha…
Two-dimensional (2D) multiferroics have been casted great attention owing to their promising prospects for miniaturized electronic and memory devices. Here, we proposed a highly stable 2D multiferroic, VOF monolayer, which is an intrinsic ferromagnetic half semiconductor with large spin polarization ~2 $μ_{B}/V$ atom and a significant uniaxial magnetic anisotropy along a-axis (410 $μeV/V$ atom). Meanwhile, it shows excellent ferroelectricity with a large spontaneous polarization 32.7 $μC/cm^{2}$ and a moderate energy barrier (~43 meV/atom) between two ferroelectric states, which can be ascribed…
Quantum localization via atomic point defects in semiconductors is of significant fundamental and technological importance. Quantum defects in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductors have been proposed as stable and scalable optically-addressable spin qubits. Yet, the impact of strong spin-orbit coupling on their dynamical response, for example under optical excitation, has remained elusive. In this context, we study the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the electron-phonon interaction in a single chalcogen vacancy defect in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, molybdenu…
It has long been an aspirational goal to create artificial structures that allow fast permeation of water but reject even the smallest hydrated ions, replicating the feat achieved by nature in protein channels (e.g., aquaporins). Despite recent progress in creating nanoscale pores and capillaries, these structures still remain distinctly larger than protein channels. We report capillaries made by effectively extracting one atomic plane from bulk crystals, which leaves a two-dimensional slit of a few angstroms in height. Water moves through these capillaries with little resistance, whereas no p…
Transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers are promising candidates for exploring new electronic and optical phenomena and for realizing atomically thin optoelectronic devices. They host tightly bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) that can be efficiently excited by resonant light fields. Here, we demonstrate that a single monolayer of molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) can dramatically modify light transmission near the excitonic resonance, acting as an electrically switchable mirror that reflects up to 85% of incident light at cryogenic temperatures. This high reflectance is a direct consequence …
We apply a microscopic theory of exciton-polaritons in cavity-confined monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides including both optical polarizations in the monolayer plane, allowing to describe how chiral cavity photons interact with the valley degrees of freedom of the active material. Upon polariton formation, the degenerate excitons inhabiting the two inequivalent valleys are shown to assume bonding and antibonding superpositions as a result of cavity-mediated intravalley interactions combined with intervalley Coulomb interactions. This is representative of a polariton-induced coherent mi…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors host strongly bound two-dimensional excitonic complexes, and form an excellent platform for probing many-body physics through manipulation of Coulomb interaction. Quantum confined Stark effect is one of the routes to dynamically tune the emission line of these excitonic complexes. In this work, using a high quality graphene/hBN/WS$_2$/hBN/Au vertical heterojunction, we demonstrate for the first time, an out-of-plane electric field driven change in the sign of the Stark shift from blue to red for four different excitonic species, namely, …
Metal contacts to two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are ubiquitous in modern electronic and optoelectronic devices. Such contacts are, however, often plagued by strong Fermi level pinning (FLP) effect which reduces the tunability of the Schottky barrier height (SBH) and degrades the performance of 2D-semiconductor-based devices. In this work, we show that monolayer MoSi$_2$N$_4$ and WSi$_2$N$_4$ - a recently synthesized 2D material class with exceptional mechanical and electronic properties - exhibit strongly suppressed FLP and wide-range tunable SBH when contacted by metals. An exceptionall…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials are able to strongly confine light hybridized with collective excitations of atoms, enabling electric-field enhancements and novel spectroscopic applications. Recently, freestanding monolayers of oxide perovskites have been synthesized, which possess highly infrared-active phonon modes and a complex interplay of competing interactions. In this study, we evaluate central figures of merit for phonon polaritons in the tetragonal phases of the 2D perovskites SrTiO$_3$, KTaO$_3$, and LiNbO$_3$, using density functional theory calculations. Specifically, we compute the…
