Moiré superlattices of two-dimensional van der Waals materials have emerged as a powerful platform for designing electronic band structures and discovering emergent physical phenomena. A key concept involves the creation of long-wavelength periodic potential and moiré bands in a crystal through interlayer hybridization when two materials are overlaid. Here we demonstrate a new approach based on spatially periodic dielectric screening to create moiré bands in a monolayer semiconductor. It relies on reduced dielectric screening of the Coulomb interactions in monolayer semiconductors and their environmental dielectric-dependent electronic band structure. We observe optical transitions between moiré bands in monolayer WSe$_{2}$ when it is placed close to small angle-misaligned graphene on hexagonal boron nitride. The moiré bands are a result of long-range Coulomb interactions, strongly gate-tunable, and can have versatile superlattice symmetries independent of the crystal lattice of the host material. Our result also demonstrates that monolayer semiconductors are sensitive local dielectric sensors.
Moiré excitons are emergent optical excitations in 2D semiconductors with deep moiré superlattice potentials. While these excitations have been realized in several platforms, a system with dynamically tunable moiré potential to tailor the moiré exciton properties is yet to be realized. Here, we present a continuously tunable moiré potential in a monolayer WSe2 that is enabled by its proximity to twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) near the magic-angle. Due to its flat electronic bands, charge distribution is highly localized and forms a triangular lattice in TBG. Tuning the local charge density via…
Moiré superlattices of van der Waals heterostructures provide a powerful new way to engineer the electronic structures of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Many novel quantum phenomena have emerged in different moiré heterostructures, such as correlated insulators, superconductors, and Chern insulators in graphene systems and moiré excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) systems. Twisted phosphorene offers another attractive system to explore moiré physics because phosphorene features an anisotropic rectangular lattice, different from the isotropic hexagonal lattice in graphene and TM…
There is immense interest in how the local environment influences the electronic structure of materials at the single layer limit. We characterize moiré induced spatial variations in the electronic structure of in-situ grown monolayer V2S3 on Au(111) by means of low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We observe a long-range modulation of the integrated local density of states (LDOS), and quantify this modulation with respect to the moiré superstructure for multiple orientations of the monolayer with respect to the substrate. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals a pr…
Strain engineering is a vital way to manipulate the electronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials. As a typical representative of transition metal mono-chalcogenides (TMMs), a honeycomb CuSe monolayer features with one-dimensional (1D) moiré patterns owing to the uniaxial strain along one of three equivalent orientations of Cu(111) substrates. Here, by combining low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we systematically investigate the electronic properties of the strained CuSe monolayer on the Cu…
We unravel the influence of quasiparticle screening in the non-equilibrium exciton dynamics of monolayer WS$_2$. We report pump photon energy-dependent exciton blue and red-shifts from time-resolved-reflectance contrast measurements. Based on a phenomenological model, we isolate the effective impact of excitons and free carriers on the renormalization of the quasi-free particle band gap, exciton binding energy and linewidth broadening. By this, our work does not only provide a comprehensive picture of the competing phenomena governing the exciton dynamics in WS$_2$ upon photoexcitation, but al…
Black phosphorus exhibits a high degree of band anisotropy. However, we found that its in-plane static screening remains relatively isotropic for momenta relevant to elastic long-range scattering processes. On the other hand, the collective electronic excitations in the system exhibit a strong anisotropy. Band non-parabolicity leads to a plasmon frequency which scales as $n^β$, where $n$ is the carrier concentration, and $β<\tfrac{1}{2}$. Screening and charge distribution in the out-of-plane direction are also studied using a non-linear Thomas-Fermi model.
In bilayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, the twist angle between layers can be used to introduce a highly regular periodic potential modulation on a length scale that is large compared to the unit cell. In such structures, correlated states can emerge, in which excitons in the heterostructure are strongly localized to the potential minima due to exciton-exciton interactions. We explore the transition between Mott and extended exciton phases in terms of a moiré-Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. Hopping and on-site interaction parameters are obtained from a Wannier representation …
We show that by combining high-k dielectric substrate and high density of charge carriers, Coulomb impurity can be effectively screened, leading to an unprecedented room-temperature mobility of ~150cm2/Vs in monolayer MoS2. The high sample quality enables us to quantitatively extract the mobility components limited by Coulomb impurities, intrinsic and surface optical phonons, and study their scaling with temperature, carrier density and dielectric constant. The excellent agreement between our theoretical analysis and experimental data demonstrates unambiguously that room-temperature phonon-lim…

We investigate the magnetic proximity effect in van der Waals heterostructure formed by a monolayer semiconductor stacked on a 2D ferromagnet, where the lattice mismatch and twisting between the layers typically lead to the formation of moiré pattern. We find that the magnetic proximity effect arising from the spin dependent interlayer coupling depends sensitively on the interlayer atomic registry. Consequently, in the moiré pattern, the spatial variation of the atomic registry leads to a lateral modulation of magnetic proximity field. Such moiré modulated magnetic proximity effect manifests a…
The stacked two layered materials with a lattice constant mismatch and/or with twist angle relative to each other can create a moiré pattern, modulating the electronic properties of the pristine materials. Here, we combine scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations to investigate the moiré potential induced bandgap tuning in InSe/CuSe vertical heterostructure synthesized by a two-step of molecular beam epitaxy. Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements demonstrate the heterostructure with a superlattice periodicity of ~3.48nm and a twist angle of abo…
We present a systematic study of the variables affecting the electronic and optical properties of two-dimensional(2D) crystals within \textit{ab initio} GW and GW plus Bethe Salpeter Equation (GW-BSE) calculations. As a prototypical 2D transition metal dichalcogenide material, we focus our study on monolayer MoS${}_2$. We find that the reported variations in GW-BSE results in the literature for monolayer MoS${}_2$ and related systems arise from different treatments of the long-range Coulomb interaction in supercell calculations and convergence of k-grid sampling and cutoffs for various quantit…
Semiconductor moiré heterostructures exhibit rich correlation-induced many-body phenomena with signatures of emergent magnetism, Mott insulating states or generalized Wigner crystals observed in optical spectroscopy by probing intralayer excitons. However, as the staggered band alignment in the underlying WSe$_2$/WS$_2$ heterobilayer system separates photoexcited electrons and holes to form lowest-energy interlayer excitons, direct access to interactions between correlated charge states and ground state moiré excitons remained elusive. Here, we use MoSe$_2$/WS$_2$ heterostacks with type-I band…
Two-dimensional materials on metallic surfaces or stacked one on top of the other can form a variety of moiré superstructures depending on the possible parameter and symmetry mismatch and misorientation angle. In most cases, such as incommensurate lattices or identical lattices but with a small twist angle, the common periodicity may be very large, thus making numerical simulations prohibitive. We propose here a general procedure to determine the minimal simulation cell which approximates, within a certain tolerance and a certain size, the primitive cell of the common superlattice, given the t…
Systematic studies of the two high-temperature monolayer oxygen structures that exist on the (110) tungsten surface were performed using low-energy electron microscopy and diffraction measurements. Our work questions the commonly accepted interpretation from the literature that striped oxygen superstructures arise from alternating site-exchanged (S-E) domains. We postulate that the superstructures originate from a misfit between tungsten and oxygen lattices while the striped appearance corresponds to a moiré pattern. Moreover, we show that the two structures, indicated as 113- and 337-phases d…
Monolayers of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) hold great promise as future nanoelectronic and optoelectronic devices. An essential feature for achieving high device performance is the use of suitable supporting substrates, which can affect the electronic and optical properties of these two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here, we perform many-body GW calculations using the SternheimerGW method to investigate the quasiparticle band structure of monolayer MoS2 subject to an effective dielectric screening model, which is meant to approximately describe substrate polarization in real device ap…
Monolayer chromium trihalides, the archetypal two dimensional (2D) magnetic materials, are readily suggested as a promising platform for high frequency magnonics. Here we detail the spin wave properties of monolayer CrBr$_3$ and CrI$_3$, using spin dynamics simulations parametrized from the first principles. We reveal that spin wave dispersion can be tuned in a broad range of frequencies by strain, paving the way towards flexo magnonic applications. We further show that ever present halide vacancies in these monolayers host sufficiently strong Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction to scatter spin …

Intrinsic electrical and excitonic properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are studied on CYTOP fluoropolymer substrates with greatly suppressed unintentional doping and dielectric screening. Ambipolar transport behavior is observed in monolayer WS2 by applying solid states backdates. The excitonic properties of monolayer MoS2 and WS2 are determined by intricate interplays between the bandage renormalization, Pauli blocking and carrier screening against carrier doping.
To date only a few two-dimensional (2D) magnetic crystals were experimentally confirmed, such as CrI3 and CrGeTe3, all with very low Curie temperatures (TC). High-throughput first-principles screening over a large set of materials yields 89 magnetic monolayers including 56 ferromagnetic (FM) and 33 antiferromagnetic compounds. Among them, 24 FM monolayers are promising candidates possessing TC higher than that of CrI3. High TC monolayers with fascinating electronic phases are identified: (i) quantum anomalous and valley Hall effects coexist in a single material RuCl3 or VCl3, leading to a vall…
The manipulation of two-dimensional materials via their dielectric environment offers novel opportunities to control electronic as well as optical properties and allows to imprint nanostructures in a non-invasive way. Here we asses the potential of monolayer semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) for Coulomb engineering in a material realistic and quantitative manner. We compare the response of different TMDC materials to modifications of their dielectric surrounding, analyze effects of dynamic substrate screening, i.e. frequency dependencies in the dielectric functions, and d…
We present first-principles many-body calculations of the dielectric constant, quasiparticle band structure, and optical absorption spectrum of monolayer MoS$_2$ using a supercell approach. As the separation between the periodically repeated layers is increased, the dielectric function of the layer develops a strong $q$ dependence around $q=0$. This implies that denser $k$-point grids are required to converge the band gap and exciton binding energies when large supercells are used. In the limit of infinite layer separation, here obtained using a truncated Coulomb interaction, a $45\times45$ $k…
A quantitative description of Coulomb interactions is developed for two-dimensional superconducting materials, enabling us to compare intrinsic with external screening effects, such as those due to substrates. Using the example of a doped monolayer of MoS2 embedded in a tunable dielectric environment, we demonstrate that the influence of external screening is limited to a length scale, bounded from below by the effective thickness of the quasi-two-dimensional material and from above by its intrinsic screening length. As a consequence, it is found that unconventional Coulomb-driven superconduct…
Monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (ML-TMDs) offer exciting opportunities to test the manifestations of many-body interactions through changes in the charge density. Tuning the charge density by a gate voltage leads to profound changes in the optical spectra of excitons in ML-TMDs. We review the band-gap renormalization and dynamical screening as a function of charge density, and then incorporate these effects through various approximations that model long-wavelength charge excitations in the Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE). We then show that coupling between excitons and shortwave charg…
Recent atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments~[ACS Nano {\bf 2014}, 8, 12410-12417] conducted on graphene-coated SiO$_2$ demonstrated that monolayer graphene (G) can effectively screen dispersion van der Waals (vdW) interactions deriving from the underlying substrate: despite the single-atom thickness of G, the AFM tip was almost insensitive to SiO$_2$, and the tip-substrate attraction was essentially determined only by G. This G vdW {\it opacity} has far reaching implications, encompassing stabilization of multilayer heterostructures, micromechanical phenomena or even heterogeneous catalys…
We have investigated the influence of the substrate on the fluorescence of adsorbed organic molecules. Monolayer films of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic-3,4,9,10-diimide (PTCDI), a supramolecular network formed from PTCDI and melamine, and perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic-3,4,9,10-dianhydride (PTCDA) have been deposited on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). The principal peaks in the fluorescence spectra of these films were red-shifted by up to 0.37 eV relative to published measurements for molecules in helium droplets. Smaller shifts (~0.03 eV) arising from interactions between neighbouring m…
To have a fully ab initio description of the Moiré pattern in a transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayer, we have carried out density functional theory calculations, taking accounts of both atomic registry in and the lattice corrugation out of the monolayers, on a MoTe2(9*9)/MoS2(10*10) system which has a moderate size of superlattice larger than an exciton yet not large enough to justify a continuum model treatment. We find that the local potential in the midplane of the bilayer displays a conspicuous Moiré pattern. It further leads us to reveal that the variation of the average local po…
The structure of a graphene monolayer on Ir(111) has been investigated {\it in situ} in the growth chamber by surface x-ray diffraction including the specular rod, which allows disentangling the effect of the sample roughness from that of the nanorippling of graphene and iridium along the moir{é}-like pattern between graphene and Ir(111). Accordingly we are able to provide precise estimates of the undulation associated with this nanorippling, which is small in this weakly interacting graphene/metal system and thus proved difficult to assess in the past. The nanoripplings of graphene and iridiu…
The optical properties of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers such as MoS$_2$ or WSe$_2$ are dominated by excitons, Coulomb bound electron-hole pairs. Screening effects due the presence of hexagonal-BN surrounding layers have been investigated by solving the Bethe Salpeter Equation on top of GW wave functions in density functional theory calculations. We have calculated the dependence of both the quasi-particle gap and the binding energy of the neutral exciton ground state E$_b$ as a function of the hBN layer thickness. This study demonstrates that the effects of screeni…
